At that time, Anand was part of the <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> team and working on <keyword id="265122" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="DARPA">DARPA</keyword>’s <keyword id="1974019" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SyNAPSE">SyNAPSE</keyword> project (for the curious, let’s tell you this project focuses on building all sorts of <keyword id="1974020" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Smart-hardware">smart hardware</keyword> that emulate higher intelligence).<br />
 <br /> Prior to starting his own venture, Anand joined a Palo Alto-based start-up called Evolved Machines, Inc., as a research scientist and developed various neural algorithms that could connect to real-world sensory perceptions like vision and smell. “As part of Evolved Machines, I was involved in another DARPA project called <keyword id="1974022" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Neovision2">Neovision2</keyword>,” he recalls.<br />
 <br /> There are three others in the core team – another <keyword id="170488" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="co-founder">co-founder</keyword> who has some very useful experience in designing products that use the <keyword id="294572" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="machine-learning">machine learning</keyword> approach; an experienced and distinguished professional with a similar background to Anand’s and another expert who builds the kind of network infrastructure the company requires. Although development work started in March this year (a month after Anand returned from <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>), the start-up was officially launched in August 2013 and has recently shifted its headquarters from Bangalore to Chennai.<br />
 <br />
<strong>What inspired the venture:</strong> During his stint at Evolved Machines, Anand decided that he would work on AI projects of his own. So he worked as a <keyword id="17182" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Consultant">consultant</keyword> with <keyword id="1973986" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zort-Technologies">Zort Technologies</keyword> for a couple of years while trying to figure out what to do next.<br />
 <br /> “Although building great AI is a good thing, we did realise that there were very few solutions in the market that would help create great <keyword id="1974006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Consumer-experience">consumer experience</keyword>,” says Anand. “That’s because there is no unified platform that allows easy and cheap <keyword id="1974027" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Access-to-AI-elements">access to AI elements</keyword> – no suitable infrastructure for handling the requirements of the applications using those elements. So we decided to create such a platform. That way, we can build a whole new ecosystem for everyone who wants to create new experiences enhanced by AI.”<br />
 <br />
<strong>What’s the pitch: </strong>Making machines more useful by making them a bit more human: Fun, intelligent and relevant. They will sense as babies, observe and play as youngsters, learn and change with you as they grow older. In brief, the start-up aims to provide AI support across three categories of experiences – fun and play, usefulness &amp; convenience, and helpful &amp; revealing. “Someday in the near future, we hope to bring everyday objects to life, not just the devices we use today,” the site notes.<br />
 <br />
<strong>How it works: </strong>Mad Street Den is in the business of delivering artificial intelligence to the world – in varied formats and across industries. The primary product is a Cloud-based <keyword id="1974029" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI-platform">AI platform</keyword> that developers can leverage to incorporate <keyword id="1973990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI-components">AI components</keyword> into their applications. This ‘MAD’ (Mind Abled Devices) stack currently focuses on <keyword id="1974030" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vision-based-applications">vision-based applications</keyword> and delivers elements such as <keyword id="1974031" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facial-gesture-analysis">facial gesture analysis</keyword>, <keyword id="406688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="face-recognition">face recognition</keyword>, <keyword id="1974032" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gaze-tracking">gaze tracking</keyword> and so on. But in the next few years, Mad Street Den may also develop low-cost <keyword id="1974033" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Custom-hardware">custom hardware</keyword> to support its existing stack; create <keyword id="1974034" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="High-end-cognitive-hardware">high-end cognitive hardware</keyword> for big enterprises/software companies and finally make foray into <keyword id="62549" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Robotics">robotics</keyword>.<br />

“All these are in the pipeline and we intend to create more apps and new products by leveraging our own AI platform,” explains Anand. “That will further create new and wonderful experiences enhanced by our AI solutions and speak volumes about our quality.”<br />

<strong>Claim to fame: </strong>Novelty of concept and the tremendous potential are the key factors at this point. Very few <keyword id="770060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-start-ups">Indian start-ups</keyword> are currently working in the <keyword id="1974055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI-space">AI space</keyword> and it could be the next big thing when Web 3.0 – widely assumed to be a combination of artificial intelligence and the semantic Web – finally arrives.<br />
 <br />
<strong>Show me the money: </strong>Till date, the start-up has been bootstrapped and has not started earning revenues. As of now, the <keyword id="232730" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="business-model">business model</keyword> is essentially B2B, but Anand has high hopes about B2C earnings as the company is also building its own products. “We are a very early-stage company, completely self-funded and in the process of building our scalable infrastructure and our first B2C product (a game) by early next year. In fact, we will be demoing our prototype at MobileSparks 2013 in Bangalore tomorrow (December 14), he says.<br />
 <br /> “As we have many potential <keyword id="598465" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="revenue-streams">revenue streams</keyword>, it is a little difficult to gauge the market size at present,” he observes. “But it spans everyone – from the <keyword id="1974050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="College-dorm-developer">college dorm developer</keyword> to <keyword id="1974051" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-product-companies">small product companies</keyword>, to service providers and <keyword id="163194" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="OEMs">OEMs</keyword> who want to enhance their offerings. Even <keyword id="1974052" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Large-corporations">large corporations</keyword> might want their own custom stacks and proprietary <keyword id="1974026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI-elements">AI elements</keyword>,” he adds.<br />
 <br /> Although bootstrapped, Mad Street Den is not looking to raise funds just now. “We intend to work on our product pipeline first and come up with 1-3 more products by mid-2014,” says Anand. “Once we have the process in play and are getting considerable traction at consumer and enterprise levels, approaching investors will make sense. Also, we have gone past the incubation stage now. Neither are we limited to a single platform or product. Therefore, we will be looking at a very large angel round or maybe a small <keyword id="919124" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Series-A">Series A</keyword> within a year, depending on our requirements. Given our <keyword id="1974053" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="RD-requirements">R&amp;D requirements</keyword>, we would like to expand our operations to the US as well.” <br />

<strong>Biggest challenge: </strong>Competition is always there as several companies are working in the AI space – both in India and abroad. But the field is vast and almost completely untapped; so there is space for everyone. “Currently, there’s no delivery model like our Cloud platform, especially in the vision space. So that gives us some competitive edge and we are building the rest of the USP,” concludes Anand.

After that, he has big plans.</li><li>Once he has dispatched Robinson, Paul said, he'll focus his efforts on taking on a star of the UFC, maybe even <keyword id="2944528" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Conor-McGregor">Conor McGregor</keyword>, in a boxing rules contest.</li></ul><p>If you don't like Jake Paul existing in boxing then tough s---.</p><p>He's here to stay, it's the eve of his second fight of the year, and he's already challenging the UFC's biggest names to crossover from the Octagon into the ring. He's impossibly hard to ignore.</p><p>The YouTube creator has long been a staple of Insider's digital culture pages, <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-interview-party-coronavirus-calabasas-mayor-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">even speaking to this publication earlier in the year</a>.</p><p>But this week he spoke to Insider's combat <keyword id="6356028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports">sports</keyword> correspondent for the first time and, judging by the way he's talking, it won't be the last.</p><p>The first question I asked Paul was an easy one. At 23, Paul has millions of subscribers, and brought in $21.5 million in 2018 alone, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/top-10-highest-paid-youtube-stars-of-2018-forbes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to CBS News</a>.</p><p>So having made more in one year than many boxers earn in an entire career, why fight?</p><p>As Hall of Famer Marvin Hagler once reportedly said: "It's tough to get out of bed to do roadwork at 5 a.m. when you've been sleeping in silk pajamas."</p><p>Essentially what Hagler meant is that once you've made your money, why keep putting yourself through the grim reality of early runs, grueling sparring sessions, and getting punched repeatedly in the face? Especially when you could be kicking back at home with a cigar and a glass of fine cognac.</p><p>For Paul, the answer to that question is simple.</p><p>"I'm not fighting to make money," he told Insider. "I'm fighting because I want to and I love it."</p><p>That resonated with this author. And it might do with other fight fans too, even if they can't stand the idea of a YouTuber continuing to enter the boxing ring.</p><p>I haven't made $21.5 million my entire life, let alone a single year, but if I had, I'd probably think: 'To hell with it,' recruit the top trainers in my area, work out for fun, and cosplay as an in-your-face fighter just to annoy people.</p><p>I can see where Paul is coming from.</p><p>He's one fight into his pro career with one knockout victory on his record, albeit against a fellow content creator called AnEsonGib.</p><p>His fight Saturday against the former NBA player Nate Robinson is against an actual athlete this time, though still not a fighter.</p><p>The pair's cruiserweight match serves as the co-main event for the highly-anticipated Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. exhibition, and is scheduled for six rounds.</p><p>If Paul has his way, it will last one.</p><h2>Saturday's show is just the right amount of weird for me</h2><div type="image" title="Jake Paul and Nate Robinson" height="582" width="1250" msid="79453509" hostid="261"></div><p>"I wake up every day with fire in my belly," Paul said. "That's just where the passion, hard work, and dedication comes from.</p><p>"All this entertainment in LA is great — YouTube, acting, music — and I love it, but boxing just sits differently with me.</p><p>"I really have to push myself outside of my comfort zone to do those sprints, to wake up on a Saturday morning when all my friends are in Los Angeles, out at the clubs, making music, having fun, and I'm up early, isolated, running sprints, and nearly puking.</p><p>"And then going sparring? I just love it. I see a huge future for me in this sport."</p><p>One aspect of combat sports which Paul appears to excel at is trash talking his opponents </p><p>With <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/JakePaulProductions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">20 million subscribers on YouTube</a>, Paul isn't one to shy away from the limelight, and is all too happy to talk down to Robinson, a three-time slam dunk champion.</p><p>"He's just a capper, he makes s--- up, and his s--- talking is weak," said Paul. "He initiated this fight on Instagram talking s---. So I was like, alright, let's fight then, Nate.</p><p>"He basically said he was from the mud and I had a silver spoon all my life. I just said, 'Nate, your dad was in the NFL and your mom owned a beauty salon. My dad was a roofer and my mom was a nurse.'</p><p>"Like, you're saying you're from the mud, but you're not. I never had a silver spoon growing up. I'm a self-made millionaire.</p><p>Paul said that he thinks mentioning Robinson's upbringing got under the skin of the former NBA dunk champion.</p><p>"His whole entire thing is, like: 'Jake's not working as hard as me. We're doing the nitty gritty, in a small gym, in Seattle, getting out the mud.'</p><p>"That doesn't mean anything in boxing," he said.</p><p>"I've seen footage. I know he's dedicated and working hard. He seems light on his feet. But there's nothing he can do, or his coaches can do to train him, for me.</p><p>"I'm going to take him down in the first round," Paul predicted. "I've said this from the day this contract was signed, and I'm still saying it now.</p><p>Robinson's training has left Paul un-frightened and unimpressed. "I'm not impressed with anything he's doing," he said.</p><p>"He's arm-punching, not using his hips, and I have a significant reach advantage, height advantage, weight advantage, and experience advantage.</p><p>"I also have a youth advantage. I'm a lot better looking than he is, which is important in boxing," he said, failing to conceal a laugh.</p><p>"If you look good, that's what takes it to the next level."</p><h2>Jake Paul wants to challenge UFC fighters like Conor McGregor in the ring</h2><div type="image" title="Jake Paul boxing" height="1333" width="2000" msid="79453511" hostid="261"></div><p>The novice boxer told Insider he wants to "take care of business by producing a spectacular performance" this weekend.</p><p>But, after that, he'll likely be engaging MMA athletes in verbal warfare on social media, looking to lure one of them into the ring for a boxing rules contest.</p><p>As for who that first MMA challenger could be, Paul mentioned the former Bellator welterweight champion and former One champion, Ben Askren, whose career stalled when he moved to the UFC.</p><p>"Ben Askren has been saying he wants to fight me," Paul said. "He's on Twitter talking s---.</p><p>"Even though he got knocked out in five seconds [<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-jorge-masvidal-knocked-ben-askren-out-in-5-seconds-2019-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by Jorge Masvidal</a>]. So he has no place to speak from.</p><p>"If you're a human and you can be knocked out in five seconds then you shouldn't be fighting. Retire, delete your Twitter, and then go into a hole and hide — that's just embarrassing."</p><p>If Paul fights and beats Askren, he says, then there's an obvious next target: Conor McGregor.</p><p>"Once I take out a legitimate MMA fighter in the boxing ring, people are gonna be like, 'Damn, Jake Paul vs. Conor McGregor would be pretty entertaining.</p><p>"I'm bigger than Conor, I weigh more than Conor, and he's out of his prime, sort of washed-up.</p><p>"He wants to fight Manny Pacquiao in the ring? He would get worked by Manny Pacquiao. He'd be an 0-2 boxer."</p><p>He then started making elaborate facial gestures, rolled his eyes, and said he knows people think he's crazy.</p><p>"But me and Conor would be a more even fight. And when the fight happens, everyone will read this back and say, 'Damn, that kid's out of his mind, but he called this. "There really, fundamentally at the core ... there are not differences."</p><p>"The president has listened to what I have said and ... what the other people on the task force have said," Fauci added. "When I made recommendations, he's taken them. He's never countered or overridden me."</p><p>Numerous reports of <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/i-m-going-keep-pushing-anthony-fauci-tries-make-white-house-listen-facts-pandemic">disagreements</a> with the president have emerged in recent days after the physician was catapulted into the national spotlight during the coronavirus pandemic. Fauci's comments about the virus appeared to undercut several of Trump's claims, including whether or not an anti-malaria medication called chloroquine was proven to be beneficial in the treatment of the coronavirus.</p><p>When asked about Trump's description of the drug as a "game-changer" and "approved," Fauci replied that the evidence was merely "anecdotal."</p><p>Fauci, whose decades-long tenure spans Republican and Democratic presidential administrations, also noted in a separate interview that he would never describe the coronavirus as the "Chinese virus," a description Trump and his allies have embraced even after it quickly spread beyond Wuhan's borders.</p><p>The rumor mill went into overdrive when Fauci was previously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dr-fauci-facepalm-covered-his-face-after-stuck-lozenge-2020-3">spotted</a> making facial gestures and covered his face with his hand during a press conference, as Trump cracked a joke. This means more employees are also having their meetings virtually. </p><p>But virtual meetings can be a challenge. A survey from the workplace research think tank <a href="https://www.pmi.org/learning/library/successful-virtual-meetings-skills-improvement-6267">Project Management Institute</a> (PMI) found virtual meetings often aren't successful because of distractions (like social media notifications), lateness, and a lack of communication between colleagues.</p><p>"As the nature of work changes, so too must the structure and dynamics of teams - and this is true for virtual meetings," Brantlee Underhill, managing director for North America at PMI, told Business Insider. "The biggest mistake managers make is operating like it's business as usual. But this new normal requires different skills, more clearly defined roles and responsibilities and increased agility."</p><p>If managers want to hold more effective virtual meetings, experts say they should develop a plan that will help them get the most out of their employees. </p><p>Here are tips that will help you become more effective at leading teams virtually, according to CEOs and management experts.</p><h2>Have a clear agenda for the meeting</h2><p>Having set goals for your team can make for a smoother online transition. In this case, experts suggest managers create a dynamic agenda or one that's built on a shared document on the fly. Jordan Husney, CEO and cofounder of the meeting tool <a href="https://www.parabol.co/">Parabol</a> recommends companies use a shared Google Doc, or a virtual workplace tool like <a href="https://www.notion.so/">Notion</a>. </p><p>"Most people are used to the concept of an agenda sent out before a meeting," Husney said. "But let's be honest with each other - this is hard." </p><h2>Keep it small</h2><p>One step managers can take to make a meeting more organized is to keep it small. According to Underhill, when you're planning a virtual meeting a smaller team can help keep the call on task.</p><p>"Split a larger group into smaller, more agile teams to complete specific tasks," Underhill said.</p><p>But sometimes there's no way of escaping a large meeting, for example, business conferences or workplace town halls. In this case, it may be useful to use hand gestures to signal the start or stop of a discussion. </p><p>"If you're in a large meeting, use a 'raise hand' or similar function and then speak," said Ben Christensen, cofounder and head of people at <a href="https://www.joinhandshake.com/">Handshake</a>, a college networking and career platform. "It can help make a more inclusive conversation than trying to interject or interpret facial cues via video call."</p><h2>Assign roles and responsibilities to employees</h2><p>For a virtual meeting to run as planned, at the start of a meeting experts recommend divvying up action items among employees. This prevents multitasking and makes room for accountability, Husney said. </p><p>"Virtual meetings are most effective when each team member understands how they are contributing to the larger whole," Husney said. "It also helps ensure greater transparency and total participation across the team and ensures every team member knows they have a voice and place."</p><h2>Have a backup connection available</h2><p>Technology is still not always reliable. Christensen advises managers have an alternative way to connect if your first method fails you.</p><p>"Have one backup for your meeting connection just in case," he said. If issues arise during a video conference, for example, the video freezes or the image is blurry, make sure employees can and know how to dial in for an audio call. </p><h2>Give everyone a chance to speak</h2><p>According to Underhill, it is imperative to upgrade how you manage employees in an online setting. During a meeting, everyone needs to get a chance to discuss their ideas. </p><p>Underhill said managers should monitor the chat to ensure everyone has a chance to participate and no one dominates the conversation.  </p><h2>Make time to check in with your coworkers</h2><p>When employees are working remotely, it's likely that employees will feel lonely and isolated, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loneliness-working-from-home-isolation-managers-employee-engagement?r=strategy-write-up">Business Insider reported</a>. To fix this, Husney advises managers "make space for humanity." This can mean engaging more personally through icebreaker questions and check-ins at the start of a meeting. </p><p>"It can be as simple as asking, 'What has your attention today?' or, 'How are things?'" Husney said.</p><p>These check-ins also double as a way to make sure everyone's mic is working. As a manager, scheduling time to listen to your employees not only shows compassion for their mental health, but it's important for your bottom line.  </p><p>"If somebody seems a little down, you can care for that individual at the moment," Husney said. Those are what I call high stake lies; they are the lies that the police and the FBI and insecure spouses are trying to catch. They are the lies of the criminal, the terrorist, the philanderer, the embezzler, and what the cops call 'bad guys.'</p><p><strong>Myth #2 - No one lies.</strong> Hardly. You need to find out why they are concealing their emotions in order to judge whether it is sign they are guilty of the offense you are investigating.</p><p><strong>Myth #7 -The polygraph is a reliable lie detector. </strong>Scientists have not discovered a silver bullet, which works on everyone, to betray a lie. The polygraph, the so-called lie detector, is just a little bit better than chance. Yet it does have its use in a criminal investigation-if only one of the suspects fails the test, he or she is the first one to investigate, bearing in mind that this suspect may be the most nervous or worried about not being believed, though innocent.</p><p><strong>Myth #8 - It's hard to spot a lie from how people behave. </strong>There are what I like to call 'hot spots' which indicate you are not getting the full story. If you really do want to catch a liar there are nearly thirty different hot spots to pay attention to.</p><p>Micro facial expressions and gestural slips are the two most important ones, but there are many more. For example, a slight shrug, usually of one shoulder, coinciding with a verbal statement of confidence is an example of a 'hot spot' revealed in a gestural slip. Something is awry. How to tell if someone is lying

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Which of the foreign diplomats in your country are spies? Which of your spies is a double agent? And which foreign leaders are planning to bomb their neighbours? </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">All governments strive to answer such questions. American spooks think studying body language may help.</span></p>
<p>Spooks are seldom as easy to spot as Leslie Nielsen in "Spy Hard" (pictured). A diplomat who doubles as a spy will typically become agitated when he stops doing humdrum work and switches to the secret stuff, says Joe Navarro, a former FBI man.</p>
<p>A skilled counterintelligence agent can detect the resulting changes in body movement, he says. People hiding something important unconsciously modify their dress, facial expressions, gestures and gait. They also change the way they smoke and check their watches, and how close they stand to shop windows. Mr Navarro refuses to be more specific because "we're still using" these tricks.</p>
<p>One success of the FBI's Behavioural Analysis Programme became public in 1999, after agents trained by Mr Navarro noticed the curious non-verbal cues of a Russian diplomat. A probe led to the discovery of a bug at the State Department. Nearly all federal security agencies now study body language, says Mr Navarro.</p>
<p>For example, since 2009 a Pentagon think-tank called the Office of Net Assessment has spent roughly $300,000 a year on interpreting the body language of foreign leaders, says Valerie Henderson, a spokeswoman. The Body Leads Project has subjected Osama bin Laden and a dozen leaders of potentially hostile nations to what it calls "movement-pattern analysis".</p>
<p>It takes a good 20 hours to understand 30 minutes of video, says Martha Davis, a former consultant to an American defence contractor. It is not as simple as seeing that someone is fidgeting and concluding that he is lying. Rather, the trick is to spot statements that deserve extra scrutiny, such as a denial made while shaking one's head a moment longer than usual, she says.</p>

<p>Critics caution that movements can be rehearsed to mislead. But involuntary "micro-expressions"--which may last no longer than 1/25th of a second--often reveal concealed emotions, says Paul Ekman of the Paul Ekman Group, a body-language consultancy in California.</p>
<p>His clients include the New York Police Department's counterterrorism division, intelligence agencies and special forces who may need, he says, to know whether the captured survivors of a firefight are telling the truth when interrogated. Each micro-expression's meaning isn't always clear, however. The face of a man about to detonate a suicide-belt resembles that of a man who fears he has left home with the stove on, Mr Ekman says.</p>
<p>Context, therefore, is important. Consider the body movements of Vladimir Putin in late February as Russia conspired to snatch Crimea from Ukraine. The Russian president's posture, eye movements and other non-verbal cues showed that he was feeling less confident than his swaggering speeches suggested, says Karen Bradley of the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies in Brooklyn. Mr Putin's poise improved as it became clear that the West would not stop him.</p>

<p>Other governments are interested in body language, too. In an article in an Israeli magazine in 1979 Amatzia Baram wrote that Saddam Hussein's body language revealed that he hated Israel only somewhat, but hated Iran enough to invade it. Eleven months later Saddam's tanks rolled into Iran. Israeli military intelligence promptly hired Mr Baram, and he is now at the University of Haifa. He also advised the American army after Saddam's capture.</p>
<p>America has spent $900m since 2007 trying to read the body language of passengers in airports. This is a waste of money, says Ms Davis: a few seconds of observation is not enough, and the screeners are hopelessly undertrained.</p>
<p>Done properly, however, and focused on the kind of people most likely to have interesting secrets, body-language analysis offers juicy rewards. Allan Pease, an Australian consultant, says that at least three Russian government agencies pay his firm to decipher the body movements of Western leaders such as Barack Obama, David Cameron and Angela Merkel.</p>

Unlike last year's iPhone 11 family and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-12-rumors-5g-release-camera-specs-2019-6">rumored upcoming iPhone 12</a>, the iPhone SE isn't meant to introduce attention-grabbing new features and technological advancements. Rather, it's designed to carry the message that there's a new iPhone for everyone, even those who can't afford to spend $700 or more on a new smartphone.</p><p>The iPhone SE's biggest asset is its A13 Bionic processor, the same powerful chip that drives the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro. That comes wrapped in a 4.7-inch design that looks and feels much like the iPhone 8, meaning yes, the iPhone SE is the first new iPhone to come with a Touch ID home button since 2017's iPhone 8.</p><p>While the iPhone SE certainly has a lot going for it, the phone is launching at a time when there's more competition than ever in the market for affordable smartphones. It's the most compact iPhone in years, and after spending the last several months using the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, it's a welcome throwback.</p><p>In terms of its size, weight, and appearance, the iPhone SE is nearly identical to the iPhone 8. The biggest differences are in the iPhone SE's color choices and the positioning of the Apple logo on the back of the device.</p><p>It's an aesthetic that those in need of an upgrade who are reluctant to give up their iPhone 6S or iPhone 7 will surely appreciate. At a time when smartphones have become increasingly large and at times unwieldy, the iPhone SE is refreshingly simple. It feels much easier to manage with one hand, and legacy iPhone owners also won't have to worry about learning new swipe gestures to replace the home button.</p><p>As much as I enjoy unlocking my iPhone just by looking at it, I've really come to appreciate having Touch ID again. Being able to rest my finger on the iPhone's home button to unlock it sometimes felt more convenient than using Face ID.</p><p>For example, Touch ID allows me to quickly unlock my phone to see more details about a notification without picking it up, unlike Face ID. At a time when many people like myself are wearing protective masks and coverings over their face before leaving the house, being able to quickly access my phone without facial recognition has been very helpful.</p><p>My only complaint about the iPhone SE's design is that it feels a bit antiquated. I love the convenience of having a smaller iPhone with Touch ID, but the chunky bezels above and below the SE's display do feel a bit outdated. Other smartphone makers, like Samsung, have launched devices around the same price as the iPhone SE that have larger, borderless screens.</p><p>The iPhone SE has a 4.7-inch screen with a 1,344 x 750 resolution and Apple's True Tone for adjusting colors based on surrounding lighting  just like the iPhone 8. Like every other iPhone that Apple currently sells except for the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, the iPhone SE's screen is made from an LCD panel rather than an OLED display. OLED screens typically offer better contrast and deeper black tones, but they're usually found on more expensive devices.  </p><h2>Performance</h2><p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=35871X943606&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fshop%2Fbuy-iphone%2Fiphone-see-se" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored"><div type="image" title="iphone SE front" height="3024" width="4032" msid="75439321" hostid="261"></div></a></p><p>Apple's iPhone SE may be tiny, but it packs a lot of power. The phone runs on Apple's A13 Bionic processor, the same chip found inside the $700 iPhone 11, $1,000 iPhone 11 Pro, and $1,100 iPhone 11 Pro Max. Apple says the chipset is built for real-time video and photo analysis and can perform 1 trillion operations per second.</p><p>The A13 Bionic is the biggest part of what makes the iPhone SE so appealing. It means the iPhone SE is equipped to handle almost everything the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro can, except for the features and applications that take advantage of the multi-lens cameras on those pricier iPhones. That's important because it suggests the iPhone SE won't quickly feel outdated since it runs on Apple's newest mobile processor.</p><p>This is what gives the iPhone SE a big advantage over some well-received Android rivals. <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword>'s $400 Pixel 3a, for example, earned praise for the fact that it brought one of the Pixel 3's most compelling features — Night Mode, which takes clear photos in the dark — at an unusually low price. But, it runs on an older Qualcomm processor from 2018 that was designed for less expensive smartphones. The same can be said for Motorola's Moto Z4, which is currently available for $400 and offers a range of appealing features, like a border-free screen and 48-megapixel camera. That phone, too, runs on an older Qualcomm processor built for relatively inexpensive phones.</p><p>The iPhone SE certainly offered snappy performance during my experience with it. It is able to render a 4K one-minute video clip in iMovie in about 18 seconds, unsurprisingly beating the more than 2-year-old iPhone 8, which takes roughly 45 seconds. What does surprise me though, is that the iPhone SE manages to render this clip even faster than the $1,400 Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra does when exporting a 4K clip of the same length. Samsung's phone, by comparison, takes about 31 seconds.</p><p>Another area in which I noticed the iPhone SE's more powerful performance was when running certain augmented reality apps. While I don't notice much of a difference between the iPhone SE and iPhone 8 with some apps, like the AR storytelling app Wonderscope or the science education app Atlas, the iPhone SE is much faster while functioning as a digital tape measure. The iPhone SE is able to detect new surfaces and adapt instantly when using Apple's Measure app, whereas the iPhone 8 sometimes struggles to adjust immediately as I pan the phone's camera around my apartment.</p><p>The iPhone SE seems more powerful on paper as well. It earned higher scores on the Geekbench 5 benchmark than the iPhone 8 and Google Pixel 4. Geekbench runs a series of tests that claim to measure a processor's single-core and multi-core performance to evaluate how they hold up during real-world, everyday tasks like checking email and streaming music. </p><p>After running the app's CPU test multiple times, the iPhone SE scored between 1,326 and 1,332 on Geekbench's test of a single processing core, and between 3,102 and 3,331 on a test that evaluates how multiple processing cores perform. The iPhone 8, by comparison, scored between 921 and 931 on the single core test and between 2,248 and 2,328 on the multi-core test, while the Pixel 4 scored 730 on the single core test and 2,445 on the multi-core version. </p><p>The OnePlus 8 Pro and Galaxy S20 Ultra performed roughly the same as and in some cases better than the iPhone SE when it came to the multi-core test. The S20 Ultra, for example, scored between 886 and 907 on the single core test and between 3,301 and 3,282 on the multi-core test, while the OnePlus 8 Pro scored 894 on the single core test and 3,322 on the multi-core test.</p><p>But, the iPhone SE still scored the highest of all the devices on Geekbench's single core test. </p><h2>Camera</h2><p>The iPhone SE's camera system is similar to that of the iPhone XR; it has a single 12-megapixel camera and a 7-megapixel selfie camera. The biggest differences between the iPhone SE's camera and the iPhone XR's is that the former comes with more lighting effects for Portrait Mode (six versus the XR's three effects) and a newer version of Apple's high dynamic range technology.</p><p>The iPhone 8 also has a single 12-megapixel camera and a 7-megapixel front camera, but lacks Portrait Mode and Apple's Smart HDR, a technology that should be better at capturing details, highlights, and shadows.</p><p>The iPhone SE takes crisp, colorful photos that in some cases looked superior to those taken with the iPhone 8 and in others seemed about the same. Apple's top-of-the-line camera on the iPhone 11 Pro, which features a triple-lens 12-megapixel setup, sometimes appears to capture images with better contrast, color, and detail compared to the iPhone SE. But, in other instances, such as when photographing colorful flowers, all three phones capture similar images.</p><p>Take a look at the images below, which were shot on the iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and iPhone 11 Pro. But, it's more than capable enough for those who just want a phone that can take high-quality photos and don't necessarily care about the extra flexibility that the 11 and 11 Pro offer.</p><p>Still, some low-cost Android phones have more to offer when it comes to camera functionality, like the Pixel 3a, which has Google's Night Sight technology for taking photos in the dark. Samsung's $400 Galaxy A51 also has a quad-lens camera with depth, ultra-wide, and macro lenses in addition to the standard wide lens.</p><h2>Battery life</h2><p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=35871X943606&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fshop%2Fbuy-iphone%2Fiphone-see-se" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored"><div type="image" title="iphone se 2" height="600" width="800" msid="75439331" hostid="261"></div></a></p><p>You can probably expect to get about a day's worth of battery life out of the iPhone SE, depending on how you use your device.</p><p>During most work days — which entails frequently checking notifications, leaving the screen on for long periods of time, making phone calls, and recording audio on my phone — the iPhone SE lasts from the early morning until the late afternoon or early evening before I have to plug it in. But, on the weekend, when I'm mostly using my phone to occasionally check email and social media, I am able to get through an entire day without having to charge it.</p><p>Comparatively, most flagship smartphones I've tested, like the iPhone 11 Pro, typically last for more than a day on a single charge. Those who aren't partial to Apple have plenty of compelling Android alternatives at their disposal, some of which offer more camera features and modern edge-to-edge screen designs even if they run on chips that may not be as powerful or new as the A13 Bionic. Google's Pixel 3a and Samsung's Galaxy A51 are two such examples.</p><p>The iPhone SE doesn't have a lot of the extras I've come to appreciate on Apple's newer iPhones, like the 11 and 11 Pro's ultra-wide-angle camera or a borderless screen.
