In a show of strength, a huge group of academicians is highlighting the flaws of Facebook’s Free Basics. 
 
Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is trying everything possible to get people’s approval for Free Basics, through Facebook posts, print and television ads. 
 
However, nearly 50 faculty members of the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science, in a statement, blasted at the Free Basics programme, which is an internet platform that gives users Facebook and a few other services for free. 
 Many claim Free Basics is just a different word to internet.org and violates the principle of <keyword id="6391709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-neutrality">net neutrality</keyword>.

Allowing a private entity 
 
- to define for Indian Internet users what is “basic”, 
 
- to control what content costs how much, and 
 
- to have access to the personal content created and used by millions of Indians 
 
is a lethal combination which will lead to total lack of freedom on how Indians can use their own public utility, the Internet. Facebook's “free basics” proposal is such a lethal combination, having several deep flaws, beneath the veil of altruism wrapped around it in TV and other media advertisements, as detailed below. 
 
Flaw 1: Facebook defines what is “basic”. 
 
The first obvious flaw in the proposal is that Facebook assumes control of defining what a “basic” service is. They have in fact set up an interface for services to “submit” themselves to Facebook for approval to be a “basic” service. This means: what are the “basic” digital services Indians will access using their own air waves will be decided by a private corporation, and that too one based on foreign soil. The sheer absurdity of this is too obvious to point out. 
 
To draw an analogy, suppose a chocolate company wishes to provide “free basic food” for all Indians, but retains control of what constitutes “basic” food ̶ this would clearly be absurd. Further, if the same company defines its own brand of “toffee” as a “basic” food, it would be doubly absurd and its motives highly questionable. While the Internet is not as essential as food, that the Internet is a public utility touching the lives of rich and poor alike cannot be denied. What Facebook is proposing to do with this public utility is no different from the hypothetical chocolate company. In fact, it has defined itself to be the first “basic” service, as evident from Reliance's ads on Free Facebook. Now, it will require quite a stretch of imagination to classify Facebook as “basic”. This is why Facebook's own ad script writers have prompted Mr. Zuckerberg to instead make emotional appeals of education and healthcare for the poor Indian masses; these appeals are misleading, to say the least. 
 
Flaw 2: Facebook will have access to all your apps' contents. 
 
The second major flaw in the model, is that Facebook would be able to decrypt the contents of the “basic” apps on its servers. This flaw is not visible to the lay person as it's a technical detail, but it has deep and disturbing implications. Since Facebook can access un-encrypted contents of users' “basic” services, either we get to consider health apps to be not basic, or risk revealing health records of all Indians to Facebook. Either we get to consider our banking apps to be not “basic”, or risk exposing the financial information of all Indians to Facebook. And so on. This is mind boggling even under normal circumstances, and even more so considering the recent internal and international snooping activities by the NSA in the US. 
 
Flaw 3: It's not free. 
 
The third flaw is that the term “free” in “free basics” is a marketing gimmick. If you see an ad which says “buy a bottle of hair oil, get a comb free”, you know that the cost of the comb is added somewhere. If something comes for free, its cost has to appear somewhere else. Telecom operators will have to recover the cost of “free basic” apps from the non-free services (otherwise, why not make everything free?). So effectively, whatever Facebook does not consider “basic” will cost more. 
 
If Facebook gets to decide what costs how much, in effect Indians will be surrendering their digital freedom, and freedom in the digital economy, to Facebook. So this is not an issue of elite Indians able to pay for the Internet versus poor Indians, as Facebook is trying to portray. It is an issue of whether all Indians want to surrender their digital freedom to Facebook. 
 
That the “Free Basics” proposal is flawed as above is alarming but not surprising, for it violates one of the core architectural principles of Internet design: net neutrality. Compromising net neutrality, an important design principle of the Internet, would invariably lead to deep consequences on people's freedom to access and use information. We therefore urge that the TRAI should support net neutrality in its strongest form, and thoroughly reject Facebook's “free basics” proposal.

After <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword> barred discriminatory pricing of data services, including a ban on zero-rated products, <keyword id="46907" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-communications">Reliance Communications</keyword> has decided to make Facebook's <keyword id="3073276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Free-Basics">Free Basics</keyword> platform a paid service. 
 Subscribers will now have to pay applicable data charges for accessing websites or apps through the zero-rated Free Basics platform, a spokesperson at <keyword id="6368075" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="RCom">RCom</keyword> told ET. This process would be followed after necessary technical changes are implemented over the next few days. 
 
As of now, Free Basics has only one distributor in India in the form of Reliance Communications.

Reliance Communications conforms to TRAI rule, would make Free Basics a paid service

With Facebook’s Free Basics exit from India, brand consultants say the social networking site could not handled the campaign in the country. 
 
TRAI rejected Facebook’s Free Basics over discriminatory pricing for data services. 
 
"It's fair to say it was a mishandled campaign for a company that's trying to launch a new initiative. It was a naked show of muscle power," Futurebrands India CEO Santosh Desai told ET. 
 Experts also add that the word about Free Basics did not go well with public as it was alleged of misusing <keyword id="6391709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-neutrality">net neutrality</keyword>. 
 
As per ET, Facebook had sanctioned upwards of Rs 150 crore for the Free Basics campaign. 
 
"While the campaign or its aggressive nature cannot be the only reason behind Trai's decision, I think Indians didn't relate to it so well. They should have reached out to influential bloggers and used social media more effectively to explain what it actually meant, "MG Parameswaran, former executive director of FCB Ulka, told ET. 
 
The mishandled campaign also reminded the public of Uber and Maggi. 
 
Uber had to deal with severe criticism after a passenger was raped in an Uber cab, but the taxi aggregator bounced back. Maggi also regained foothold after it was banned.

Did Facebook fail to handle its 'Free Basics' campaign? Brand consultants say it missed the trick

Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart that has so far maintained its silence on the ongoing debate over India’s take on net neutrality. However, it has now openly come in support for the idea, saying that all content on the internet should be treated equally. It however has chosen to steer away from commenting about <keyword id="3073276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Free-Basics">Free Basics</keyword>, the Facebook programme that has garnered heavy criticism for being misleading. 
 
"Absence of net neutrality will affect web innovations and create digital inequality in India," said a statement from Flipkart. "We believe that the spirit of net neutrality should apply equally to all companies in India." 
 In the recent past, Facebook’s similar initiative called Internet.org was stalled after it received negative reviews from the believers in <keyword id="3181257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital-equality">digital equality</keyword>.

Flipkart supports net neutrality; stays mum about Free Basics

In what could be called a big step for net neutrality, telecom regulator <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword> has clarified that none of the zero-rated products such as <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>’s <keyword id="3073276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Free-Basics">Free Basics</keyword> and <keyword id="2796594" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="airtel-zero">Airtel Zero</keyword> will be allowed in the country. The telecom watchdog has barred differential pricing of data products. 
	 
	“No service provider shall offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on basis of content," said TRAI in a statement. 
	 
	The regulator has barred the service providers from entering into agreement that will have discriminatory effect on data services tariffs. The bar will result in disallowing subsidized data packages that offers only a select services such as Whatsapp, Twitter. 
	 
	"Only exemption - tariffs may be reduced for accessing emergency services or at times of public emergency," added TRAI. The industry monitor has also stated that service providers will have to pay a penalty of Rs 50,000 a day if any violations are done.

Net Neutrality: Telecom watchdog TRAI bars Facebook’s Free Basics and Airtel Zero

After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Facebook">Facebook</a>’s infamous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Free+Basics">Free Basics</a> campaign, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Microsoft+">Microsoft </a>also wants to pitch for Digital India. <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nadella">Satya Nadella</a> on his Hyderabad trip on Monday pointed out the role the company could play in connecting rural India through its White Spaces project. The service will use unused spectrum from television to allow internet services. 
 
"There is a great opportunity in the space and we are willing to help local startups on developing this," said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nadella">Nadella</a> during his address at T-Hub, the state government-backed technology incubator. 
 
The White Spaces project will deliver low cost connectivity solutions and has been active in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. Discussions are on to scale it up as part of the Rs. 333 Crores AP Fibre Grid project for rural broadband connectivity.

wants to connect rural India

After rejecting <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>’s <keyword id="3073276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Free-Basics">Free Basics</keyword> and Airte; Zero, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (<keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword>) is now mulling to give <keyword id="1141527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="free-internet">free internet</keyword> to consumers under the <keyword id="6391709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-neutrality">net neutrality</keyword> framework. 
 
The TRAI, in its consultation paper, stated that this idea is still being explored. 
 "The consultation paper (on <keyword id="1526623" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="free-data">free data</keyword>) is being issued to explore model(s) that could achieve benefits of offering free data while avoiding the ingenuity that the differential tariff regulation is meant to prevent," the regulator said in the consultation paper. 
 
"We're a little surprised that this is the consultation paper that has been released because it only concerns means of making data available for free. It appears to be a follow-up from the last consultation, and not what we were expecting," said SavetheInternet volunteer Nikhil Pahwa. 
 
TRAI, in the first model, stated that "allowing service providers to perform what effectively amounts to a gate-keeping function, might potentially empower TSPs (telecom service providers) to select certain content providers at the disadvantage of others, thereby adversely affecting public interest and creating non-level playing field". 
 
In the second model, it stated, “there is a need to enable smaller entrepreneurs to flourish without permitting gate-keeping function in the hands of TSPs and also to give consumers more choices for accessing the Internet". 
 
The last date for comments for this paper is June 16 and that of counter-comments is June 30.

Telecom regulator wants to give consumers free internet now

Despite posting a 27% rise in its revenues in India, from Rs 97.6 crore to Rs 123.5 crore, Facebook earned less than Rs 9 per user on an average in the country. 
 
India is Facebook’s second-largest market outside the United States and it earns Rs 630 per user in the US. 
 
Facebook, which has more than 135 million users in India, has low revenues in the country because of more spending on digital media on Google. 
 However, if <keyword id="46907" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-communications">Reliance Communications</keyword> and other telcos are convinced over Free Basics, Facebook may earn more. 
 
But, Facebook’s Free Basics is still mired in a huge controversy. 
 
Karthik Srinivasan, national lead, Social@Ogilvy, the social media arm of advertising firm Ogilvy &amp; Mather told ET, “For most marketers, Facebook is one if the best option when they want to do targeting at a micro-level in terms of select locality or user base." 
 
Meanwhile, New York-based market research company eMarketer stated that by 2019, when more than a quarter of the ad spend in India will go towards digital, the country will pull ahead of many others, including France, Spain, Italy and Brazil, by this metric.

Facebook posts 27% revenue rise in India, earns paltry Rs 9 per user. Here’s why

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=World+Bank">World Bank</a> has spoken up about companies including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Facebook+">Facebook </a>who provide restricted access to the Internet. 
 
"Care should be taken to ensure that users have the greatest possible access to internet-based content, applications and services of their choice," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=World+Bank">World Bank</a> said. 
 
"But traffic management measures, while legitimate, should not reduce the enjoyment of fundamental rights and freedoms, particularly freedom of expression," the report said. 
 
The 350 page report called 'World Development Report 2016: Digital Dividends’ touches upon the need to build out and continuously improve networks and network capacity. 
 "The recent trend to develop services in which some basic content can be accessed free of data charges (such as <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>'s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Free+Basics">Free Basics</a> or <keyword id="1826931" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Internet-org">Internet.org</keyword>), while other content is subject to data charges, would appear to be the antithesis of <keyword id="6391709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Net-neutrality">net neutrality</keyword> and a distortion of markets," it said. 
 
"Nevertheless, some defend the practice as a means of extending internet use in low-income countries. In India, following protests, some participating organisations withdrew support to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel+Zero">Airtel Zero</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Internet.org">Internet.org</a>, as the regulator indicated that these platforms do not provide equal treatment to all online services," the report said. 
 
An open and free internet is a key contributing factor to innovation in the digital economy, making it critical to protect this openness, it added.

Even World Bank is worried about Facebook's Free
Basics

The whole net neutrality debate just doesn’t seem to end. In a new twist, the volunteer-led community of SaveTheInternet.in has come up with a plan under which it would urge people to email Facebook and ask the reason why it didn’t inform users about a letter that TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) wrote to the social network. The letter sought specific responses to questions asked in the differential pricing paper about Facebook’s Free Basics initiative. 
 
"With this, SaveTheInternet.in team has enough ammunition to show TRAI that Facebook did not inform users," Kiran Jonnalagadda, CEO of HasGeek, told ET. She ran the email campaign for SaveTheInternet.in on this new initiative. 
 
In the first half of December last year, Facebook started a mass campaign on its platform, asking its users to support Free Basics in India. It was done in response to a consultation paper on "differential pricing of data services", which was released by TRAI. Under the campaign, Facebook asked its users to email TRAI to show their support to "digital equality" and supporting Free Basics. 
 
No questions posed in the paper were, however, addressed in this campaign. 
 Starting this year, TRAI asked Facebook to alert its users that they should send revised responses if they support the initiative, as merely voting for Free Basics would not hold up as a valid response. "We have reached out to the users who responded through Facebook, asking them to specifically answer the four questions that you have raised in the consultation paper," Ankhi Das, director of public policy at <keyword id="736869" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facebook-India">Facebook India</keyword>, South and Central Asia, had written to TRAI on January 6. However, as per TRAI and about 90% of the 2,800 users that were polled by savetheinternet.in, they did not get any notification from Facebook regarding the same. 
 
Now, the activist group is saying that users should question Facebook's public policy director as to why they didn’t inform them about it. 
 
Even the number of responses differ as per both Facebook and TRAI. While Facebook says that it sent 1.1 crore responses, the regulator said that it has received only 18.9 lakh responses.

SaveTheInternet has enough proof to expose Facebook's Free Basics sham

As the uproar over <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Facebook%E2%80%99s+Free+Basics&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Facebook’s Free Basics</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel%E2%80%99s+Zero+Plan&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Airtel’s Zero Plan</a> was fading, India’s two largest telecom operators <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> and <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> have questioned <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword>’s proposal to have a non-telco platform offer Indians free internet. The telcos say this could create a monitor to regulate content. 
 
The story so far 
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) re-opened the debate on net neutrality recently with a new pre-consultation paper, inviting public discussion on the topic. Previous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TRAI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TRAI</a> papers issued in March 2015, December 2015 and May 2016 have raised questions on free data, differential pricing and net neutrality. 
 
Back in February, TRAI upheld net neutrality and forbid telecom operators from offering discriminatory tariffs for data services. However, in May TRAI came with a new consultation paper that offers ways to offer free internet within the spirit of net neutrality. Seems like the telcos don’t like it. 
 
What is Vodafone/Airtel’s problem? 
“If free data can be offered by a non-telecom service provider, then there is no basis or rationale for the authority to exclude the telecom operators, especially in view of the fact that a telecom operator agnostic platform could also indulge in the gate-keeping functions,” the Vodafone representative said to TRAI. 
 
The idea <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TRAI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TRAI</a> came up with is to have a telecom agnostic platform which can facilitate app developers to promote their websites by offering incentives to users for making their websites popular. Vodafone argues that if the telecom service provider (TSP) agnostic platform is to be regulated, “then why can a similar platform not be offered by TSPs who already operate under a regulatory framework.” 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vodafone&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vodafone</a> said that while TRAI can regulate a TSP and not a non-TSP. Hence, if any such free data framework is to be developed, it should be structured through TSPs. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Airtel</a> said it’s untrue that TSPs try to curb the freedom of the internet. It said that telcos hold a valid telecom licence, and only they can have a business under India’s regulatory framework. 
 
Why is this important? 
If telcos get to charge <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=WhatsApp&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">WhatsApp</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Skype&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Skype</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Viber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Viber</a> for voice-calling over the internet, or any other services, these apps would be forced to charge Indians to make up for this loss. Only the telcos stand to gain from this case, especially because whether it is voice calling or texting, data over the internet is treated the same. 
 
Also, now that India is picking up momentum in terms of startups, this move is likely to trigger an anti-competitiveness where the big players would get bigger, and the smaller ones would suffer unnecessarily. Net neutrality is good for startups. Period. 
 
Why should we be worried? 
There’s a tight rope between judicious traffic management and unfair interference, and a naïve customer might not be able to make one from the other. Power in the hands of ISPs has never turned out well consumers globally. Think <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Netflix-Comcast&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Netflix-Comcast</a>. 
 
In case you don’t know, few years back, Comcast deliberately dropped <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Netflix&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Netflix</a> speeds in the US. This forced the video-streaming company to pay money to Comcast. In case you don’t want your video-streaming speeds to drop one night, you know what to do.

India’s two biggest telcos don't want TRAI’s free internet
plan. Here’s why it matters

If you see something inappropriate like nudity, hate speech or violence, you can use the Report link near the offending post, photo or comment to report it to us, so we can take further action. 
 
Intimate photos shared without permission 
We take this extremely seriously. If someone shares an intimate image of you without your permission we will remove it immediately and where appropriate, we will refer this content to law enforcement. 
 
This doesn’t just stop at photos and video. We will also remove content that threatens to share intimate images or promotes sexual violence or exploitation. 
 
Report inappropriate or abusive private messages on Facebook 
Just because others can’t see it, doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. To report an abusive private message, open the message, click on Options in the top right corner and select Report Spam and Abuse. 
 
A member of our support team will review your report, usually within 48 hours and determine whether it violates our Community Standards. You can check the status of your report in the Support Inbox and we’ll update you there once we’ve reviewed it. The person you are making the report against will know a complaint has been made against them, but we won’t let them know who reported them. 
 
If someone continues to violate our Standards we may limit their use of certain features and in some cases, permanently disable their account.

You can check or uncheck each piece of information, line by line, to control what you share with the app.
