In a bid to make Messenger safer, Facebook has introduced a new feature that will help millions of people, especially minors, avoid potentially harmful interactions and possible scams without compromising their privacy. The Messenger users will now see safety notices popping up in a chat and provide tips to help them spot suspicious activity and take action to block or ignore someone when something doesn't seem right. Facebook started rolling this feature out on Android in March and would bring this to more people around the world on iOS this week. "Privacy, safety and security are fundamental to Messenger. Facebook said that keeping minors safe on its platforms is one of the greatest responsibilities. Messenger already has special protections in place for minors that limit contact from adults they aren't connected to, and uses machine learning to detect and disable the accounts of adults who are engaging in inappropriate interactions with children. The new safety feature educates people under the age of 18 to be cautious when interacting with an adult they may not know and empowers them to take action before responding to a message. "These features show a great integration of the technical tools that will help curb bad behaviour on the platform, while also reminding people of their own control over their account," said Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute. Too often people interact with someone online they think they know or trust, when it's really a scammer or imposter. The new safety notices in Messenger also help educate people on ways to spot scams or imposters and help them take action to prevent a costly interaction. "Privacy is at the heart of Messenger - where you can be yourself with the people who matter most to you, whether that's through a message, video chat, call or a Messenger Room," said Jay Sullivan, Director of Product Management, Messenger Privacy and Safety. App Lock, present in the new Privacy settings section, will use device's privacy settings like fingerprint or face authentication to unlock the Messenger app. "Your touch or face ID is not transmitted to or stored by Facebook. The feature is available today on iPhone and iPad and will come to Android in the next few months," Sullivan said in a statement on Wednesday. Facebook said it is also working on new controls so Messenger users can decide who can message or call them directly, who goes to their requests folder, and who can't message or call them at all. This will be similar to the message controls on Instagram. "We're also exploring more ways to protect your privacy and safety when someone you don't know sends you a message," said Facebook. The social network will test a feature similar to what exists on Instagram and WhatsApp that blurs images in the message requests folder. This will give Messenger users the choice to view an image from someone they may not know before replying to the message or blocking or reporting the account. There are over 1.3 billion Messenger users globally and Messenger is expected to grow to 2.4 billion users by 2021. New Facebook Messenger tool to protect minor users from harmful chats

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Justin Westwood was the victim of a vicious scam that took all his money. </li><li>Westwood, who has a disability due to a brain injury, told Insider how the scam changed his life. </li></ul>Justin Westwood learned to read when he was 40. Everything took him a little longer to learn than most people because of a brain injury he sustained as a baby. Nevertheless, he's spent his life overcoming challenges and exceeding expectations. With his newfound reading skills, his world opened up. He was able to run a cash register at TK Maxx (the UK version of TJ Maxx) in south London. He could text and, like many of us, used social media to create a digital bubble that became a major part of his life. But that bubble was painfully pierced by scammers. Westwood had caregivers, which UK councils formally call personal assistants, who spent a few hours a week with him to take him out of his apartment. They also checked his bank accounts to make sure everything is okay. Westwood worked well with them, and they helped him gain independence. Then in late July, Westwood's mother, Mary-Ellen Field, received a text message from one of Westwood's caregivers, she told Insider. It read: "Justin texted me this morning saying the following: I no longer need anymore support Kristy. As I feel my support time should be with someone who really needs it more then I do. You know I can deal with alot myself now. Please understand this ok. On my way to work now. Plus I can do with my time ... I wish all the best. Ok I'v made decision ok. I dont want to discuss it ok. Good bye. Please tell your manager for me ok ..." Field said that was the first sign that something was very wrong. <div type="image" title="Justin Westwood" height="2274" width="3024" msid="95047506" hostid="261"></div>"Then he started asking me for money again, which usually means he's in trouble," she told Insider. Another red flag, she said, was "he didn't want his brother and his nephew to come around because they would see what had happened." If they went over, they would see a gaping hole where Westwood's beloved PlayStation 5 once sat. Desperate for money, he'd pawned it, but his family didn't know that yet. It wasn't until he started asking for money for his gas bill and constantly coming over for dinner that his mom understood how little money Westwood had. Westwood told Insider that he got a message on Facebook from someone calling himself "Agent Tyson," who said he had money from the government for Westwood.Westwood was confused and surprised but spurred on by a friend who said she'd also received money from this man. He believes she might have been in on the scam, but is not sure. So he asked what he needed to do to get the money. Tyson told him all he needed to do was pay a delivery fee, and he sent Westwood a picture of a FedEx truck and stacks of cash. So that's what he did. Sending money through Apple gift cards (<a href="https://support.apple.com/en-gb/gift-card-scams">a popular mode of scamming</a>), Westwood's bank account started to dwindle. Westwood became entangled in this scam for months. He paid more and more money to "Tyson" under the assumption that he would receive a life-changing sum of money. "I make my own money, I don't really like to ask my mum for anything," he told Insider. "But I gave them all my money."He told Insider he didn't know exactly how much he'd given the scammers, but he knew it was well into the thousands of pounds. He said he didn't even have enough money to buy himself groceries. "It's not very nice, it's not fair, they seem to be targeting people with disabilities," he said in a phone call, adding that he'd been sent a video of a girl with Down syndrome talking about how much money the fake agents had given her. "This hurts people's feelings and changes their way of life. I've had to delete Facebook Messenger completely now, because that's how they get me. It's kind of sad because I have relatives in Australia that I want to talk to. And I can't do it now. "I have to start over now."And the scammers didn't stop at draining his bank account — they threatened him too, Westwood said. Other fake agents told him he could be arrested if he didn't give them money or cooperate with their demands. "I was scared. They said they'd arrest me for wasting their time," he told Insider. <h2>Social-media companies need to do more, says Field</h2>Westwood and Field are calling for social-media companies to take a more rigorous approach to online scams. Warning of the potential impacts if there's no change to social-media regulations, Field said: "How can I protect him? It's never-ending. Someone will come up with something smarter next time."Also calling for more accountability from these organizations, a spokesperson for Mencap, a UK charity for people with learning disabilities, said social-media companies need to be more accountable for the harm scammers do on their sites."We know that being online and using social media can be a great way for people with a learning disability to connect with others and build positive friendships and relationships, which can often be difficult in a society where, sadly, many are not included and can be quite isolated," the spokesperson said. "However, we also know that many have negative experiences online including abusive messages, scamming, and grooming."Mencap also wants to see social-media companies engage with people with learning disabilities, their families, and caregivers to ensure their platforms are accessible and create a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and harassment.These types of crimes are hard to prosecute. Westwood and his mom went to the police, but that didn't help them find a resolution.In a statement sent via email, a spokesperson from the Met Police told Insider: "On Sunday, 18 September police received an allegation of fraud. The victim, a vulnerable man in his 40s, has been scammed online by unknown individuals. There have been no arrests and enquiries into the circumstances were carried out. The suspects could not be identified from the information provided. The case has been closed; this can be reopened should further evidence become available."<h2>Taking advantage of isolation</h2>Although there's very little data on the prevalence of online scams targeting disabled people, fraudsters in general often seek out older people and those with disabilities to take advantage of their isolation and loneliness. "We know that people with a learning disability face a range of online harms such as repeated targeting, financial scamming, harassment, and even threats of violence, often heightening the stigma and discrimination they already face every day," a Mencap spokesperson wrote in an email. "People with a learning disability may be more vulnerable to scams as they might not have the capacity to understand the risks involved in speaking to someone online and could be unable to pick up on subtle warning signs," the email continued.People with disabilities often want to establish connections and make new friends, which can make scammers more likely to target them. That tactic is sometimes referred to as "mate" crime, the Mencap spokesperson said.Westwood lost money, his freedom, and much of the confidence he gained over the past few years, his mother said. He's scared, upset, and angry. But he's determined to move forward and get his life — and his PlayStation — back.

A man with a brain injury was scammed out of all of his money. He and his mother are calling on social-media companies to protect disabled people from con artists.

A Special court on Thursday discharged cricketer-turned-politician <keyword id="13839" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir">Gautam Gambhir</keyword> from all charges in a case related to cheating flat buyers. Gambhir was a director and brand ambassador of the joint project of Rudra Buildwell Realty Private Limited and HR Infracity Private Limited, against which a case was lodged in 2016 for allegedly duping people of crores of rupees on the pretext of booking apartments in the housing project. More than 50 flat buyers had filed a complaint alleging that they booked flats in a real estate project in <keyword id="44991" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ghaziabad">Ghaziabad</keyword>'s Indirapuram area in 2011 but it did not take off. The Delhi Police had filed a supplementary charge sheet in this case in September 2019 before a city court against Gambhir and several others for alleged criminal breach of trust and cheating flat buyers. Besides Gambhir and the firm, the charge sheet had also named its other promoters Mukesh Khurana, Gautam Mehra and Babita Khurana as an accused. Facebook is loosening its ban on crypto ads as rumors swirl about its blockchain project

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Iain Cameron and his wife Brioni left Scotland and moved onto a boat in the Caribbean, in 2020.</li><li>Since they moved onto the boat, he says they've only spent three nights sleeping on land.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Iain Cameron, a 36-year-old <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/redseas">YouTuber and adventurer</a>, from Glasgow, Scotland. It has been edited for length and clarity. The idea of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/living-on-a-boat-housing-affordability-travel-around-the-world-2023-5">living on a boat came</a> to me one day, in 2016, when I stumbled across a video of sailboats in the tropics. When I started working remotely, I figured I could do my job from a boat rather than my sofa in rainy Glasgow, Scotland.The day I presented my wife Brioni with the idea to sell everything we owned to move onto a boat, her first response was "but I hate boats." Besides, we both had stable jobs in Scotland: Brioni was an elementary school teacher and I worked in tech as an international technical trainer.Eventually, we came up with a plan to test the idea and it worked out. For over two years now, living on a boat has made us stronger, more confident, and more appreciative. I think we've traveled through almost 25 countries and sailed over 12,000 miles.<h2>We tested the idea three times before moving onto our own boat</h2>First, we tested the idea by sailing on my dad's boat near our home. Our first experience was wet and cold, but later we sailed a catamaran near Edinburgh, Scotland. It went much better.A few months later, we chartered a catamaran out of Dubrovnik, Croatia with the goal of spending two weeks in the Adriatic Sea. On our return, we were still talking to each other and we still wanted to be on the boat together. A month passed and we moved to the final stage of selling everything we had to raise funds to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/best-boat-loans">buy our own boat</a>.We sold most of our things through Facebook Marketplace and eBay. The remaining stuff was sold to friends and family. The only items we didn't sell were two guitars that we loved too much to part with.<h2>We flew to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to buy our boat, but we felt scammed</h2>We were talking with a guy on Facebook Messenger who said he had a boat for sale in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The United Kingdom shut down for the pandemic, but when the lockdown lifted for a few weeks, we put our apartment on the market, bought one-way tickets to the islands, and left with only our backpacks.<div type="image" title="Brioni and Iain Cameron on the beach." height="2439" width="3252" msid="104425197" hostid="261" sizebytes="521880"></div>When we arrived, we found out it was something of a scam. The boat was trashed. We repaired a lot of it at our expense before the original owner told us the deal was off and we had to get off the boat. He released our deposit and we effectively became homeless for a few months, backpacking our way up through the Caribbean in search of a different boat to buy.During that time, we boat sat for a couple we had met in the boat yard and even lived in a shipping container. We eventually found a boat to buy through YachtWorld, which is like the auto trader of boats around the world, in December 2020. Our boat is a Leopard 47 built by Robertson &amp; Caine in 2005. It's a catamaran with 4 queen size beds each with en suite, a galley or a small kitchen, a saloon, and a cockpit.<div type="image" title="Iain and Briodi Cameron posing on their boat." height="2008" width="3252" msid="104425199" hostid="261" sizebytes="427870"></div>It was a wreck and needed huge amounts of work. We did — and do — all our boat work ourselves.<h2>Life on the water is more taxing than it sounds</h2>Everything on a boat wants to break, given the harsh salty environment. A simple mistake can result in sinking. Moreover, traveling from point A to B takes planning. A passage usually lasts a few days and when you're tired you can't just drop the anchor for sleep.Most people think life on the water is just sunshine and bikinis, but it also includes fixing plumbing and getting in the water to clean the barnacles off your hull. Our most recent challenges have been passage related. We recently crossed the Pacific Ocean, which took us 40 days. Each day, we alternated spending eight hours on watch and eight hours asleep.<div type="image" title="Iain and Brioni Cameron's boat in the middle of the ocean." height="1808" width="3252" msid="104425200" hostid="261" sizebytes="694620"></div>In that time, we faced lightning storms, huge waves, failing engines, no wind, too much wind, a broken oven, and ripped sails. Our food supply was destroyed by weevils and we had our steering system fail in the middle of the night, which almost resulted in us having to abandon ship thousands of miles from another living soul. But we wouldn't change anything for the world.<h2>The cruising community is incredible</h2>We've been fortunate enough to form amazing friendships across the globe. We usually use the phrase "we will keep doing it unless a more exciting adventure comes along," but living on a boat is an exciting lifestyle — even in the quiet moments.Our monthly energy costs are quite small at around $50, and our carbon footprint has almost vanished, as we travel using the power of the wind 99% of the time. Very rarely do we actually use our engines. We generate 100% of our electrical power from solar panels on the roof. We catch most of our food fishing with a hand reel or spear, and we find our fruit and vegetables from local markets when we dock.<h2>In almost three years, we've spent a total of three nights on land</h2>Anchoring at a dock is free, pretty much everywhere we've been, but we've had to pay marine reserve fees in some<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/bonaire-caribbean-island-surprising-things-world-traveler-2023-2"> places like Bonaire</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/panama-island-locals-relocated-climate-change-photos-2023-9">Guna Yala, Panama</a>. These usually cost around $10 a night.Our monthly expenses are in the region of $1,400. That covers food, fuel, Starlink internet, and most repair parts we need. Months fluctuate a lot, so it's hard to land an exact number. When we spent 40 days sailing across the Pacific, we didn't spend any money. But when we anchored we had to buy lots of food and parts for everything that broke so our bill was much higher.<h2>We started a YouTube channel and Patreon to document our adventures</h2>We enjoy the process of filming and editing our weekly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/redseas">YouTube episodes</a>, but our big challenge is growing our audience. To help us reach more people, we launched the<a target="_blank" href="http://www.red-seas.com/"> Red Seas website</a> and are currently on a mini world tour. <div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151066952961023&amp;set=a.10151066950656023.484797.103155091022&amp;type=3&amp;theater">NYSE Euronext / Valerie Caviness</a></div></div>One Sunday evening in the spring of 1864, messenger boys employed by the London District Telegraph Company appeared on the doorsteps of several MPs and other prominent figures across the capital. Each boy carried a telegram in a sealed envelope, and an urgent message, at so late an hour, naturally prompted alarm. "Having only arrived from the country on the previous day," one recipient later recalled, "I feared that a fire or some other casualty had occurred subsequent to my departure." But there was no fire, nor any national crisis. As Matthew Sweet tells the story, in his book Inventing The Victorians, the telegram was from Messrs Gabriel, a sketchy firm of dentists and purveyors of a tooth-whitening powder "as used by Her Majesty". The message was a friendly reminder of their opening hours. "I have never had any dealings with Messrs Gabriel," an anonymous correspondent bellowed in a letter to the Times the next day, "and beg to ask by what right do they disturb me by a telegram which is evidently simply the medium of advertisement?" Today, the letter is included in the archives of the Computer History Museum, in Silicon Valley, and with good reason: that telegram was arguably the first example of what would come to be known as <keyword id="35616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="spam">spam</keyword>.
It's tempting to think of email spam as a largely historical phenomenon, too. Sure, messages touting knock-off V!@gra do still arrive, along with pleas from the daughters of dictators looking to launder "15,000,000.00 (fifteen million) US Dollars", and wondering if you'll help. But they're intercepted by spam filters, or else easily identified and deleted. (Human vanities don't evolve much: tooth-whitening products are still a popular topic.) There was a time, in the 1990s, when serious commentators predicted that spam might kill email altogether. But these days, barring the occasional ingenious twist – what if your friend really did have his wallet stolen at the airport, and needs cash? – you'd be forgiven for concluding that the era of spam was over. Yet the alarming realisation you come to after meeting Finn Brunton, a New York University academic and author of the new book Spam: A Shadow History Of The Internet, is that it's only just beginning.
Partly, this is down to the law of unintended consequences: the campaign against spam has worked so well that it's no longer an option for ordinary, slightly dodgy marketers; instead, it's the domain of organised crime. But it's also because the basic logic of spam – that you can foist your message on millions of people, whether they like it or not, at essentially no cost, and that as long as a tiny proportion of them respond, you'll make a profit – has seeped into the rest of the web. Early in his research, Brunton discovered that defining spam was far harder than he had imagined. Where is the line, exactly, between an unsolicited email or a spam blog comment and "clickbait", those seductive Huffington Post-esque headlines that suck up your attention but don't deliver what they promise? Or branded tweets from Pepsi or Samsung that you never asked to see? Or any form of online advertising? Or, for that matter, the people the writer Merlin Mann calls "personality spammers", endlessly polluting your Facebook feed with their frenzied need for self-expression?
Spending years immersed in spam has given Brunton, who is 32, a degree of sympathy for spammers. "In the early days, being a spammer didn't involve having a lot of technical capacity; it just meant being able to absorb a lot of hatred," he says. "I wanted to understand what it felt like to be that kind of a loathed figure." His work abounds in genuinely detestable figures, such as Davis Hawke, the up-and-coming neo-Nazi leader who pivoted to full-time spamming after it emerged that his father was Jewish, undermining his prospects as an Aryan supremacist. (He is now on the run from authorities, possibly in Thailand or Belize.) But it's hard not to feel for the more hapless characters in Brunton's narrative: overzealous marketers who didn't grasp how much rage they'd be unleashing among anti-spam activists until they suddenly started receiving stacks of pay-on-delivery pizzas, or automated nuisance phone calls 40 times a night. And it's hard not to admire the ingenuity that led to Pitcairn Island, a windswept rock in the South Pacific, becoming the world's largest per capita source of spam, not because its 60 or so residents are all spammers, but because their computers have been remotely commandeered by a "botnet" system, which lets criminals elsewhere use the islanders' computing power to send millions of messages for free.
You could argue that a society is defined by what it deems unacceptable; likewise, Brunton argues, the decisions we've taken about what should count as spam, and what to do about the offenders, make the internet what it is. Ultimately, life online is a struggle to control people's attention. And while the battle against the promoters of bogus Viagra may be nearly over, it's much less clear who's winning the war.
Spam today accounts for somewhere between 70% and 90% of all email sent, depending on which estimate you trust, and email spam is far from the only variety. Yet it took years for the inventors of the internet to realise that it might be a problem. Early on, in 1971, an anti-war activist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology sent a message to all users of his network, the Compatible Time Sharing System, with a headline in caps – "THERE IS NO WAY TO PEACE. PEACE IS THE WAY" – but all he got was a slap on the wrist. ("But this is important!" he protested, when his boss told him off.) It was 35 years ago, in 1978, that the first real spam arrived: a dull invitation to a demonstration of new hardware manufactured by the Digital Equipment Corporation. And it was probably later still, some time in the 1980s, that the word "spam" was first used to describe such messages, a reference not so much to the canned meat as to the Monty Python sketch in which the conversation gradually becomes clogged with repetitive junk.
As the internet exploded, so did spam, and the challenges it posed weren't merely technical: they prompted a surprisingly deep philosophical dispute about what the net, and the nascent worldwide web, should be. Some of its founding fathers were hippies, dreaming of a new society based on trust, in which policing and government wouldn't be needed; spam threatened that. The growing ranks of home users, meanwhile, resented paying steep monthly phone bills to download what turned out to be newsgroups full of unwanted ads. And they responded with aggression.
Spammers got the aforementioned pizzas and phone calls, floods of retaliatory emails and "black faxes", all-black documents designed to waste the recipients' ink. But such shaming tactics worked only as long as spammers could feel shame. The watershed moment is widely agreed to have occurred in 1994, when two married immigration lawyers from Arizona deluged the Usenet discussion system with a message about green cards, then refused to slink away when confronted. The incident made national headlines, and one of the lawyers gave defiant interviews to newspapers. The geeks were welcome to their romantic ideas about the net, she said, but what mattered was the law, which couldn't touch the spammers.
Plenty of anti-spam laws did follow, in America and elsewhere, but they always struggled to combat the monumental forces of human vanity and avarice. Spam needs only a minuscule proportion of recipients to be duped in order to be profitable – even before anti-spam laws, 0.2% was considered an excellent response rate – and that proportion can be relied upon. In 2003, a security flaw at Davis Hawke's company, Amazing Internet Products, exposed the details of people who'd paid $50 a bottle for a herbal "male enhancement" product called Pinacle [sic], which promised to add "three full inches in length". According to Wired magazine, they included the president of a Californian aeroplane parts firm and the manager of a $6bn investment fund.
Such lapses aside, spammers have always benefited from the fact that people who fall for cons generally don't want to publicise their gullibility (or their insecurity about their genitals). The exceptions have arisen when the sums involved have been too large to brush off. In 2000, Brunton reports, a US businessman named James Adler tried to sue Nigeria's government and central bank after he paid out more than $5m as part of a mail-based 419 scam (the classic "Dear sir, I am a Nigerian prince" advance-fee fraud) in the expectation that he'd someday receive a 40% cut of a far larger sum. It takes a special blend of cynicism and naivete to fall for a 419: on the one hand, the trick feeds off racist assumptions about Africans being corrupt; on the other, it relies on the victim's confidence that the offer being made is wholly honest – and that, when the funds finally arrive, nobody at the bank will raise an eyebrow. "Which is crazy," Brunton points out. "Banks and law enforcement agencies monitor and investigate unusually large transfers all the time."
Not surprisingly, Adler's case didn't get very far. Three years later, a Czech retiree walked into the Nigerian embassy in Prague to demand assistance in recovering $600,000 that he'd spent on a 419 email fraud, much of it borrowed. When informed that no help would be forthcoming, he pulled a gun on the consul and shot him dead.
The reason this kind of spam is much less of a nuisance these days isn't primarily laws, though. It's the huge advances that have been made in spam filters, which use complex algorithms to learn to sift the bad emails from the good. The systems now in use don't need to rely on identifying especially spammy phrases, such as "Nigerian prince" or "male enhancement". Instead, by comparing vast corpuses of legitimate email and spam, they're able to determine which combinations of seemingly innocuous words mark a message as suspicious. To use one of Brunton's examples: any of the words "madam", "guarantee", "sexy" and "republic" might appear in legitimate email, but an effective filter will learn that they almost never all arise together except in spam. ("Litspam", those incongruous snippets of old novels one occasionally encounters in spam emails, is an effort to beat this system.) Oddly enough, one person who deserves credit for the relatively unclogged state of your inbox is Kenneth Lay, the late and disgraced chief executive of Enron. Academics who developed spam filters had trouble finding sufficiently large quantities of non-spam email to study, until US authorities published the 619,000 internal emails they'd seized in the course of investigations.
And yet the decisive blow that filters struck to old-school email spam may only have helped it mushroom elsewhere. Much modern spam isn't designed for consumption by humans at all; instead, it's "robot-readable", created by one non-human entity for the attention of another – specifically, the "spiders" that crawl the web compiling data for Google – in the hope of pushing a junk page higher up the list of search results. Meanwhile, the rise of social networking has seen the growth of numerous new types of spam, including the creation of vast armies of fake Twitter followers. If you've ever been suddenly retweeted by scores of obviously fictional accounts, it's because a spammer somewhere is building a stable of fake personas, engaging in plausibly human-seeming online activity, so that he or she can charge someone else money for ostensibly boosting their followership. (And if you're ever tempted to buy Twitter followers yourself – there are numerous such services online: £14 or so will buy you 20,000 – you can assume that they're not real people.)
Not that classic spam no longer exists; it has just slipped beyond the reach of law, into the purely criminal world of phishing attacks and online banking fraud. In 2011, researchers analysing the money trail behind one email, advertising Viagra-style drugs, found that the web domain involved was registered in Russia, hosted in Brazil and managed in China, taking payments through a Turkish server to an Azerbaijani bank, with the product eventually dispatched from Chennai in India.
Define spam in the abstract way that Brunton prefers, though – as "[using] information technology to exploit existing gatherings of attention" – and it becomes easier to see that, in a sense, it's everywhere online today. One interesting example: Demand Media, the "content farm" that operates sites such as eHow and Livestrong, pays humans (poorly) to write articles selected on the basis of what web users are searching for. Hence such eHow masterpieces as How To Wear A Sweater Vest and How To Sign Up For A Yahoo Email Account and How To Catch A Horse. Is that spam? The web, Brunton points out, has been colonised by clickbait – "vast algal blooms of linked content with catchy titles, top-10 lists about trending topics, wild claims, and needlessly contrarian stances, all delivered with only a few hundred words per article." Are their publishers spammers? And, if so, why not also "the canny [newspaper] editor who knows that sex, serial killers and how-to stories sell"?
There can't be definitive answers. The point is simply that human attention is a resource, and that it's possible for others to consume yours at little cost to themselves, which means it's a resource that's easily abused. Of course, society couldn't function if people weren't allowed to impinge on your attention to some degree. But how to draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable intrusions, and how to fight the unacceptable ones? Such questions matter, because they end up determining how we spend our attention online, and thus – in an increasingly connected world – how we spend our lives. For prompting us to reflect on such things, perhaps the penis-enlargement salespeople of the world deserve our grudging thanks.
