"The majority of small businesses in Indonesia rely on cash to operate due to the country's large unbanked population. Digital payments are safer than cash, both for businesses and customers. And digital payments help more people participate in the economy and give businesses access to credit which is crucial for business growth," said Idema. PayPal said the commercial partnership will enable it to "significantly grow" its scope and scale in Southeast Asia. "This new relationship is another positive step in our journey towards becoming the worldwide payments partner of choice, and helping to fuel global commerce by connecting the world's leading marketplaces and payment networks," PayPal said in a statement. The investment, Idema added, will support Facebook and Gojek's shared goal of empowering businesses and driving financial inclusion across the archipelago. The company announced to shut down its lifestyle division GoLife as well as its food court division GoFood Festival, reports The Jakarta Post. Gojek currently operates in five countries in Southeast Asia, said it would focus on its core businesses which are ride-hailing service, food delivery and e-payment solutions. "The biggest challenge is the remaining uncertainties in the future, and the hurtful fact is that this will forever change the way we operate our business and the products we offer," said CEOs Andre Soelistyo and Kevin Aluwi said in a joint statement late Tuesday. In April, the company's senior management cut their salaries to allocate more than $7.09 million to help drivers and employees cope with poor demand during the Covid-19 pandemic. New Delhi, Apr 28 () Indian tech-led startups attracted funding worth USD 2.5 billion in the first quarter of 2020, a 14 per cent rise compared to the same period last year, a report by research and consulting firm HexGn said. However, funding in startups on a global level dropped by 15 per cent to USD 60 billion in the quarter as compared to the year-ago period, the report said. It added that the number of startup deals fell by over 56 per cent to 4,100. HexGn said the numbers are an early guidance and there could be changes as more companies make announcements on funds received. It also anticipated delays in sharing of such information amid the coronavirus outbreak that has disrupted businesses worldwide. The report said the first quarter of 2020 has been very challenging for the global startup community, where even the US saw its tech startup funding dip by 10 per cent to USD 38 billion. The top deals included those by Beike from China (USD 2.4 billion) and USD 1.2 billion for Gojek. Bad news continues to pour in for China, where funding in Q1 dropped by a massive 45 per cent from the previous year. The drop is even steeper when compared to the first quarter of 2018, plunging by 63 per cent. "With the election year in America and sharpened rhetoric, things could get worse for China, before they can get any better," it added. The report noted that Indian startups seem to have bucked this global scenario till now. "The number of startup funding deals in India has grown by 30 per cent in the last quarter to 277, from 210 in Q1 of 2019. Another good news is that the Indian funding in the last quarter was not dominated by mega-billion dollar-plus infusions," it added. The most significant ones included BYJU's USD 200 million funding round, while FirstCry, Zomato, Swiggy, CureFit, Unacademy, and Bounce each grabbed over USD 100 million in startup funding in the first quarter this year. "Post COVID-19 too, Indian startups stand an excellent chance to capture a piece of this pie. With Facebook pumping in USD 5.7 billion in Jio, India is high on investment radar. Investors are getting attracted to a healthy breed of homegrown entrepreneurs, who have gone through the cycle of entrepreneurship," the report said. Indian startups attract funding worth USD 2.5 billion in Q1 2020: Report

New Delhi, Jun 14 () Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries has raised a record Rs 1.04 lakh crore in less than eight weeks from sale of minority stakes in its digital unit Jio Platforms to marquee investors. On Saturday evening, it announced sale of 0.93 per cent in Jio Platforms to global investment firm TPG for Rs 4,546.80 crore and 0.39 per cent to private equity firm L Catterton for Rs 1,894.50 crore. With these, Reliance has now sold 22.38 per cent of Jio Platforms to investors including Facebook Inc, securing Rs 104,326.95 crore in less than eight weeks, a company statement said. The investments in Jio Platforms, which comprises the firm's telecoms arm Reliance Jio Infocomm and its music and video streaming apps, give the unit an enterprise value of Rs 5.16 lakh crore, it said. It has literally been an investment spree into Jio Platforms ever since Facebook announced its Rs 43,573.62 core infusion on April 22. Besides Facebook, Reliance has attracted some of the leading global investment powerhouses at a time when the world is deeply impacted by the coronavirus pandemic resulting in a recession kind of environment for the global economy. Including Facebook, nine marquee investors on a combined basis hold 22.38 percent stake in Jio Platforms. Facebook holds the largest stake at 9.99 per cent. Within days of that deal, Silver Lake -- the world's largest tech investor -- bought a 1.15 per cent stake in Jio Platforms for Rs 5,665.75 crore on May 4. It infused another Rs 4,546.80 crore for additional 0.93 per cent stake on June 5, taking its total holding to 2.08 per cent. Private equity players KKR and Vista Equity Partners have taken 2.32 per cent stake each for Rs 11,367 crore apiece. KKR invested in Jio Platforms on May 22 while Vista invested on May 8. Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Co picked up 1.85 per cent in Jio Platforms for Rs 9,093.60 crore on June 5. Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) on June 7 invested Rs 5,683.50 crore for a 1.16 per cent stake. On May 17, global equity firm General Atlantic picked up 1.34 per cent stake in Jio Platforms for Rs 6,598.38 crore. Reliance Jio is India's biggest telecoms firm by subscribers, with more than 388 million users. It has forced out several rivals and driven consolidation in the sector since entering the market in 2016 with free voice services and cut-price data. "Jio is a disruptive industry leader that is empowering small businesses and consumers across India by providing them with critical, high-quality digital services," said Jim Coulter, co-CEO of TPG -- which has more than USD 79 billion of assets under management including investments in technology companies like Airbnb, Uber and Spotify. Keeping in mind the vast online commuter market, India’s top cab aggregator, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> is now prepping-up to introduce <keyword id="3071546" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="motorcycle-taxis">motorcycle taxis</keyword>. 
 The Bangalore-based cab aggregator also plans to launch a shuttle bus service. Not just this, but Ola users will now be able to avail <keyword id="3072073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="car-pooling">car-pooling</keyword> feature on its mobile application, reported The Economic Times. 
 
The motorcycle taxis and shuttle service, however, might face regulatory issues as these do not have any legal frameworks so far. 
 
Internal sources, requesting anonymity, informed that the bike taxis will be on the lines of Indonesia's GoJek, Blue-Jek and Grabbike, which is being used to transport people as well as goods. 
 Another major add-on to the mobile application, <keyword id="3071503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OlaShare">OlaShare</keyword>, is being worked-on for quite some time now. The company, however, declined to respond on the email queries by the business daily. 
 
The firm is also in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ola-Cabs-new-round-of-fund-raising-to-value-it-above-5-billion/articleshow/49072304.cms">advanced stage of closing a financing round</a> of about $500 million (Rs 3,000 crore), which will give a muscle to the firm for its forthcoming plans. 
 The new services, if compared to the other cab-service providers, might give a tough fight to San Francisco-based <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, which is targeting to enhance its business outside the US with India being one of the most potential markets.

Uber, however, introduced UberPool, its car-pooling service in India, starting with Bengaluru. 
 
Kartik Hosanagar, a professor of technology and digital business at The Wharton School termed the bike-taxi move an interesting one and said, "As of now, it should be seen as an experiment. But one with tremendous potential for Ola... However, the company would have to navigate around regulations." 
 
HeyTaxi, a Mumbai-based motorcycle-taxi company which was launched in June, came under fire from the city's transport department, which has termed the service illegal. 
 A top official at <keyword id="151058" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Transport-Department">Delhi Transport Department</keyword> said the state was framing a scheme for a motorcycle-taxi service but there were issues to consider. "As of now it will be deemed illegal. We were planning to launch such a service in Delhi but have put it on hold due to safety concerns," he said. Instead, Delhi launched a scheme for renting self-driven motorbikes in August. 
 
Car-pooling services, too, are in a regulator grey zone. Several state governments encourage personal carpooling as a way to lessen traffic and pollution, but as a business, the service is not covered under any legal framework. 
 
Safety is another area of concern, as riders would have to car-pool with strangers. Meru Cabs verifies co-riders with their PAN or Aadhaar numbers while BlaBlaCar mandates a social network account such as Facebook for logging in. 
 
Experts, on the other hand, agreed upon the fact that car-pooling as a business has huge potential.
