Commenting on these developments, Alok Malik, Senior Vice President &amp; Head  India business, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals said, "We expect this post marketing surveillance study to shed more light on the drug's clinical effectiveness and safety in a large cohort of patients prescribed FabiFlu. Our priority from the start of this pandemic has been to offer patients in India an effective treatment for COVID-19, while also ensuring accessibility to the masses. "Our internal research shows us that we launched FabiFlu in India at the lowest market cost as compared to the cost of Favipiravir in other countries where it is approved. And now we hope that this further price reduction will make it even more accessible for patients across the country." Despite investing significantly in R&amp;D, clinical trials and the manufacturing of FabiFlu (API and formulations), Glenmark has managed to keep the pricing of FabiFlu lower as compared to its price in other countries. FabiFlu in India was originally launched at Rs 103 per tablet, while, its price in Indian Rupees is higher in the remaining countries like Rs 600 in Russia, Rs 378 in Japan, Rs 350 in Bangladesh and Rs 215 in China. On June 20, Glenmark announced that it received manufacturing and marketing approval from India's drug regulator for FabiFlu, making it the first oral Favipiravir-approved medication in India for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19. The manufacturing and marketing approval was granted as part of accelerated approval process, considering the emergency situation of the COVID-19 outbreak in India. The approval's restricted use entails responsible medication use where every patient must have signed informed consent before treatment initiation. It was the first Indian company to commercially launch an antiviral drug - Favipiravir with brand name FabiFlu - for the treatment Covid-19 patients. The company received marketing and manufacturing approval from the Drug Controller General of India and launched the product in the Indian market on June 20. According to the company, the higher strength will improve patient compliance and experience, by effectively reducing the number of tablets that patients require per day. Earlier, the 200 mg dosage of FabiFlu required patients to take 18 tablets on Day 1, followed by 8 tablets each day thereafter for a maximum of 14 days. A higher pill burden has been associated with lower adherence to therapy, the latter affecting viral suppression and overall treatment outcomes. Reducing the pill burden has also been a demand from doctors and patients to enable adherence, the company said. The Mumbai-based drug firm had on Friday received manufacturing and marketing approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). FabiFlu is the first oral Favipiravir-approved medication for the treatment of COVID-19, the company said in a statement. "This approval comes at a time when cases in India are spiralling like never before, putting a tremendous pressure on our healthcare system," Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Chairman and Managing Director Glenn Saldanha said. When asked about the company's manufacturing capacity of the drug, the drug firm said: "Considering a minimum of two strips per patient, Glenmark will be able to provide FabiFlu for about 82,500 patients in the 1st month itself. We will be closely monitoring the evolving situation and basis the situation, we will work to scale and meet the healthcare needs of the country". Favipiravir has shown clinical improvement of up to 88 per cent in mild to moderate COVID-19 cases, it said. The regulation that allows temporary derogation from certain rules for clinical trials was approved on Friday by 505 votes in favour, 67 against and 109 abstentions, following an urgent debate last week, Xinhua news agency reported. Last month, the <keyword id="59149" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Commission">European Commission</keyword> proposed a vaccine strategy that requests a temporary and strictly COVID-19-related derogation from certain rules for clinical trials of vaccines or treatments that contain or consist of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As national requirements to assess the environmental risks of clinical trials on medicinal products that contain or consist of GMOs vary considerably across member states, a derogation from these rules is needed to avoid significant delay in developing life-saving vaccines and treatments. The doctor couple started this initiative called “Meds for More” on May 1, this year, when one of their staff members got infected with the virus and needed the medicines. “It is difficult for some people to buy these expensive medicines. We have now 100 buildings that are sending medicines to us. We are a team of eight people and some volunteers in different buildings. Last week we collected 20 kilograms of medicines, which were given to our NGO partners,” the doctor couple told news agency ANI. The couple is not only providing COVID-19 medicines like Fabiflu, antibiotics, inhalers, steroids etc., but also basic medical equipment like pulse oximeters and thermometers, too.
