With the hospitality, travel and tourism industry being severely impacted due to the coronavirus pandemic, almost all of India’s listed hotels have seen their share price tumble since February. “It is well known that the hospitality and tourism industry is the worst affected by the outbreak of COVID19 (coronavirus). "There appears to be a renewed interest in this sector and we believe that's a good thing. Oyo is over-capitalized for India and appears to be, for all practical purposes, focussed on China,” said paper.vc founder Vivek Durai. FabHotels could take on OYO with a new investment

Gurgaon based online travel services agency <keyword id="54613" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="makemytrip">MakeMyTrip</keyword> (MMT) has been eyeing a huge move into the online budget hotels market, for which it has held talks with <keyword id="2870818" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="FabHotels">FabHotels</keyword> and <keyword id="2913812" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Treebo-Hotels">Treebo Hotels</keyword>. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/markets/heres-the-indian-travel-company-that-just-went-public-on-the-nasdaq/articleshow/56092065.cms">Nasdaq</a>-listed company wanted to pick up a strategic stake in either of the companies. Makemytrip to soon enter online budget hotel space with investment in FabHotels

<keyword id="2550719" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="OYO-Rooms">OYO Rooms</keyword>, a top name in budget hotels aggregator industry, has always made it a point to offer their customers the best options for making their experience comfortable. It has now decided to pilot a food technology venture as well as an on-demand housekeeping service. 
 The company plans to combine the kitchens of the hotels listed under its belt, and the food would be sold under the name of <keyword id="3137676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="OYO-Cafe">OYO Cafe</keyword>. 
 "As in any food business, we noticed that our partner hotels' kitchen have excess inventory," Maninder Gulati, head of strategy and corporate development at <keyword id="2808667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="OYO">OYO</keyword> told ET. "So, the idea is, if we can utilise that and use food tech platforms like Zomato or Swiggy to distribute that food then that's a revenue generation potential for our partner." 
 The company also plans to dabble into on-demand housekeeping services venture, with the name <keyword id="3138076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="oyo-care">OYO Care</keyword>. "That is an on-demand cleaning service. Our area managers can facilitate cleanup for a room as and when a customer needs it," said Gulati. 
 In the past two years, the Gurgaon-based company has gained a lot of popularity, and has become a top name in the industry. In August, OYO raised $100 million in a round led by SoftBank, and since then, it has spread its assets to 30,000 rooms in 130 Indian cities and towns. OYO Rooms knows the way to the customer’s heart

In a LinkedIn post, the co-founder of Rahul Chaudhary said that Treebo has taken the decision to reduce their fixed costs. Chaudhary said that he wants “to provide the right opportunities for our highly valued colleagues.” He added that some of the employees have opted for the scheme already and they are finding outplacement opportunities for them. “These are exceptional individuals with skill sets across sales, business development, sales operations, HR, finance,” he wrote. Earlier, the startup had partnered with Paytm to provide accommodation to healthcare professionals who are frontline workers during the Covid-19 crisis. Backed by marquee investors like SAIF Partners and Matrix Partners, Treebo also raised funding in January 2020. According to <a href="https://entrackr.com/2020/01/treebo-revenue-surge-funding-valuation/">reports</a>, Treebo raised ₹3.25 crore from media conglomerate Bennett Coleman &amp; Co. (BCCL). However, last July, Treebo had fired over 100 employees as a cost cutting measure. According to an ET report, the company had then blamed a ‘large funding’ that fell through as the reason for the step. Treebo competes with FabHotels and OYO in the hospitality industry. The <keyword id="34619" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="travel-industry">travel industry</keyword> is one of the top three verticals to be heavily hit by the pandemic, along with aviation and hospitality. A report by the <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/03/world-travel-coronavirus-covid19-jobs-pandemic-tourism-aviation/">World Economic Forum </a>said that the World Travel and Tourism Council warned that the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic will result in 50 million job losses globally. “Asia is expected to be the worst affected. Treebo asks its employees to resign voluntarily as Covid-19 hits the travel industry

Travel industry without sunshine

Despite being a key sector of the economy that brings multiplier benefits, the travel and tourism sector stands largely ignored. Our concerns about high tax rates are valid concerns and we are dejected that the government paid no heed to them. Across the world, governments provide huge incentives and tax breaks to the travel industry to encourage <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/budget/common-man-budget">inflow of tourists</a>. Silver lining 
However he added that the announcement to improve road infrastructure also has latent benefits for the tourism sector as it encourages travelling. 
 
Apart from that, there are some silver linings in the industry, though. 
 
“The 5% tax cuts proposed for MSMEs is one welcome step in this direction. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/budget/common-man-budget">Speeding up of infrastructure development </a>for airlines, rail &amp; highways will also help to boost more inter-state business activity,”said Adarsh Manpuria, Co-Founder , FabHotels. 
 
Cash less travel <keyword id="265813" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vikram-Ahuja">Vikram Ahuja</keyword> of Byond Travel, a boutique travel start up feels, “Focus on digital payments and encouraging online payments (Via BHIM and other initiatives) is a huge plus for a tech-first company like ours. Also the cap on cash deposits hopefully creates more transparency in the way travel services and packages are offered since the scope for inbuilt “cash-led” services will hopefully reduce.” 
 
 Better railways and broadband 
“The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/budget/common-man-budget">announcement for increase in railway connectivity </a>to the remote areas and upgradation of airports in Tier 2 cities, a huge number of people will be able to travel smoothly from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The high speed internet connectivity in rural areas will be the biggest advantage to them. This will help them to do more purchasing and online bookings. We are expecting more travel coming ahead. Along with this, reducing the income tax to 5% for the people having an earning bracket of 2.5 lac -5 lacs, it will be a crucial factor in their saving.
