FabAlley was launched in 2012 and since then has grown from an online platform to have offline retail stores. The company now aims to have 50 exclusive retail outlets. “The company is on track to close FY20 with gross sales of ₹220 crore, at a growth of 75% over FY19, with EBITDA and PAT-level profitability,” said Poddar and Malik. The company last raised funds in December 2018. The series B round of funding for ₹60 crore was led by SAIF Partners with the VC firm’s Mukul Arora joining the board of the e-commerce company.

Fashion e-tailer FabAlley turns profitable, aims to grow 75% this year

High Street Essentials (HSE), the parent company of <keyword id="2401997" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="FabAlley">FabAlley</keyword> and Indya, on Thursday said it has raised Rs 8 crore in venture debt from <keyword id="2694863" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trifecta-Capital">Trifecta Capital</keyword>. During FY20, HSE scaled up its retail footprint with 10 new Indya stores and 5 FabAlley stores, along with expanding both brands to over 350 shop-in-shops across the country, a statement said. "The company plans to deploy the fresh round of <keyword id="6357455" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> to further fuel the offline expansion of its brands," it added. This is the second round of debt infusion by Trifecta into the company, a statement said.
 HSE had raised its first venture debt round of Rs 5 crore from Trifecta Capital in January 2018, it added.
 The company had raised Rs 60 crore in series B funding from SAIF Partners in December 2018.
 "As we scale both our offline and online presence, while incubating new offerings and brands in complementary spaces, it is imperative that we upgrade our infrastructure and working capital simultaneously," HSE co-founder Tanvi Malik said.
 She added that in the next 12-18 months, HSE plans to grow its retail presence by increasing its exclusive brand stores' count to 50 and doubling shop-in-shops to more than 650.
 "The capital expenditure required to fund this growth is best done through debt, since it reduces the cost of capital and improves return on equity," HSE co-founder and Shivani Poddar said.
 HSE had recently announced its FY19 financial results, reporting a net revenue of Rs 90.2 crore and profit of Rs 1.3 crore.

Earlier, even though 100% overseas capital was allowed in single brand retailing but they were restricted to sell only through physical outlets and not through online portals. 
 
Meanwhile, Urban Ladder Home Decor Solutions Pvt Ltd has written to Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). 
 
Presently, Urban Ladder offers a technological platform for retailers to sell their products and does not sell its own products. 
 
If Urban Ladder becomes a single-brand retail entity, it will be able to buy goods, have warehouses, and also sell them to consumers. 
 
Prior to Urban Ladder, several online companies such as Zivame, FabAlley and Yepme have mulled over turning into single-brand retailers. 
Zivame and FabAlley already run brick-and-mortar stores.

Some <keyword id="1705292" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-e-commerce">Indian e-commerce</keyword> firms, like Urban Ladder, <keyword id="972687" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zivame">Zivame</keyword>, FabAlley and <keyword id="1153436" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yepme">Yepme</keyword>, are considering turning into <keyword id="1167067" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="single-brand-retailers">single-brand retailers</keyword> so that consumers can buy from their stores without foregoing their foreign investments. 
 
It was in November last year that the government had amended its single-brand retail policy to allow foreign-funded retailers to sell products through both brick-and-mortar and online stores. 
 "Now that full clarity has emerged in single-brand policy, we will certainly look at it," Yepme CEO <keyword id="2430540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vivek-Gaur">Vivek Gaur</keyword> told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/ecommerce-firms-like-urban-ladder-yepme-and-others-plan-to-turn-into-single-brand-retailers/articleshow/53936960.cms">ET</a>. "We don't need to do everything from ecommerce to brick-and-mortar stores ourselves but it gives flexibility to pick whatever we want to do," he added. 
 
As per the policy, India allows 100% FDI in e-commerce marketplaces, however, such marketplaces can’t stock or sell on their own. They can only lend their platforms for retailers to sell products. 
 
When these online retailers re-model their businesses into single-brand operation, they would be able to hold and sell their own inventory online, without breaking any of the FDI regulations. 
 
"Currently, we are funded by Indian angel investors. As and when we get foreign money, we will definitely apply for single-brand licence," said Shivani Poddar, cofounder of the Bengaluru-based fashion start-up FabAlley. 
 
As per industry experts, companies are right in leveraging on their brand equity by going mono brands. 
 
"It creates a differentiator, and, second, there are not large brands, so it is a fantastic opportunity for companies like Zivame to capture that space," said Nitin Chhabra, CEO at e-commerce consultancy firm Ace Turtle. 
 
However, not all online players are in for this option. Limeroad and Voonik, for example, said that they want to maintain their marketplace models, thus allowing other retailers to sell their products using these platforms.

Indian e-commerce firms could turn into single-brand retailers

India’s largest online marketplace <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> is planning to set up a brick-and-mortar store and will start with master franchisee for foreign brands in the Indian market. As per reports, Flipkart will sell foreign brands through its stores and sublicense the offline business. Reportedly, Flipkart is in talks with <keyword id="1446793" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Giordano">Giordano</keyword> for a licensing deal to sell products offline and online in India. ET quoted sources as saying Flipkart has been planning to set up stores for a long time now. Presently, the ecommerce space is undergoing a slowdown as discounts are shrinking and people are wary of buying items before touching them. Flipkart is not new to open an offline store as Urban Ladder, Pepperfry, Lenkskart, Faballey and <keyword id="6376684" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nykaa">Nykaa</keyword> have already set up brick-and-mortar stores. ET reported that <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword> is appointing two sub-franchisees for Mango that includes Jaipur-based Samarth, which operates more than 100 outlets of Benetton, Tommy Hilfiger, US Polo, Puma, Lee, Wrangler and Calvin Klein, and New Delhi-based G&amp;B that runs 25 stores of Benetton in the National Capital Region. However, Myntra is also selling its own brands.

<ul><li>Their omnichannel strategy has worked well with close to 40% revenue coming in indirectly from their offline studios, reveals top <keyword id="864887" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pepperfry">Pepperfry</keyword> executive. </li><li>In an exclusive chat with Business Insider, Pepperfry says the company will increase the number Pepperfry Studio locations to over 100.</li><li>Pepperfry has announced the launch of its Snooze Studios which will sell sleep accessories like mattresses. </li><li>The startup aims to rake in a revenue ₹20 billion by the financial year 2021 through its in-house brands alone.</li></ul>In the last eight years of its existence, Pepperfry has grown to be one of the success stories of India’s <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> boom but the startup’s Vice President and Head of Omnichannel expansion, Mihir Kulkarni, had an interesting revelation to make in an exclusive interview with Business Insider – the sales had doubled after they opened physical ‘experience’ stores. “In every new catchment that we have opened up the offline studio, the city’s sales have grown by 90-100%. We now plan to take our store count up to 100 by the end of the fiscal year,” said Kulkarni. Their omnichannel strategy has paid off. Pepperfry launched its first studio in 2014. Since then, they expanded it to 65 studios across 28 cities. “While we don’t sell directly through our offline studios, they contribute significantly to our sales. Close to 40% of our overall turnover comes from the online bookings made at these studios,” said Kulkarni. This is a telling sign of the nature of evolution of the much-celebrated boom in Indian e-commerce. Other startups like Craftsvilla, Faballey and more recently Popxo have also recently launched offline stores to further grow their business. Amazon which had although pulled the plug on its global mall pop-up stores, didn’t give up on offline retail. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-quietly-launched-a-new-store-in-malls-after-pulling-the-plug-on-its-pop-up-stores/articleshow/69487379.cms">Instead</a> it launched ‘Presented by Amazon’ a range of kiosks. Pepperfry is definitely doubling down on its offline efforts but it is also looking to keep its capital investment low. It plans to expand its presence in Tier-II cities in India but would rather have more franchisees than owned stores. “Currently, out of the 65 stores, 12 are through the franchise model. We expect the number to go up to 25 by the end of the year,” said Kulkarni. The sleep market Beyond physical stores, Pepperfry is also betting big on in-house brands particularly in, what Kulkarni likes to call, the ‘sleep’ market -- mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, and more. Pepperfry is pushing these new products through its in-house brand, Clouddio. The startup aims to rake in revenues to the tune of ₹20 billion by 2020-21 through in-house brands alone. In 2017-18, Pepperfry had announced a gross merchandise volume of ₹15 billion. And, over half of its current revenue comes from in-house brands. The e-retailer also announced the launch of Pepperfry Snooze Studios – its line of products for the sleep market – within its <keyword id="3437283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="studio-pepperfry">Studio Pepperfry</keyword>. Sleep smart The sleep market is currently valued at $2.5 billion in India and is growing at 10%. Pepperfry is also experimenting with IOT-enabled products for this market– from beds that have an in-builtalarm clocks to ones that monitor sleep patterns. These products could hit the market in a few years. “The sector is highly unorganised and in terms of consumer experience. It is a broken category. That is why we want to crack open the market with our successful omnichannel strategy,” said Kulkarni. He also believes that this is the hardest part, “Their sheer enthusiasm rubs off on me and I learn a lot by listening to their ideas. I get personal gratification by seeing them give in to their belief and giving up the best years of their lives,” he says, at peace. 
 
With 66 start-up portfolio companies namely Zippr, Box8, WowMomos, AdstringO, UnBxd, Consure Medical Device, Oyo Rooms, PrettySecrets.com, Letsventure.com, MechMocha, Faballey.com, PayTunes, LogiNext, RepUp, Adsparx, Ecosense, PeeBuddy and more; Mehta is a regular target for aspiring founders and more so after his successful exit from Oyo Rooms whose founder Ritesh Aggarwal, became famous for being a 21-year old founder. 
 
From an exit perspective, Oyo was the biggest exit for any Indian angel investor at 280 x of the investment made which was last year. He is very practical with his investments and thinks that a 100 x exit from a start-up is successful but that’s not why he does it; he sounds like a proud parent when he talks about his investments.

 He is very practical in his outlook for the start-up ecosystem, “In terms of <keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, I don’t think the government has done enough especially to ease the pains of doing business. I’m appreciative of this government because not only have they started a dialogue in the country, they have also started adopting new technologies made in India, at a state and national level which is a supportive move, ”he beams. 
 
Mehta as an investor is bullish about Crypto currency, Universal utilities, FMCG brands that sell online, Medical devices, Pharma, Ed-tech, Media, and entertainment, as sectors and believes that India is on the cusp of innovative products and this is just the beginning. 
Sanjay has a good eye for innovation and thinks product start-ups like Freshdesk and Druva have already started the start-up revolution that is driven by innovative products that will propel India to be world’s start-up destination.
