A recent inspection by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="20225209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FSSAI" source="keywords">FSSAI</keyword>) has revealed concerning results. Nearly 22% of pani puri samples collected from across the state failed to meet safety standards. A few days after banning artificial food colouring in kebabs across Karnataka, <keyword id="21070182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-safety-officials" source="keywords">food safety officials</keyword> went after the pani puri stalls littered throughout the state and even more established eateries. FSSAI reportedly collected pani puri samples randomly from 79 places across Karnataka, with 49 of them being from various parts of Bengaluru. The FSSAI received numerous complaints regarding the quality of pani puri being sold across Karnataka, said Srinivas K, Commissioner of Food Safety, in a press release. An additional 18 samples were deemed to be of poor quality. The FSSAI identified chemicals like brilliant blue, sunset yellow, and tartrazine as the primary culprits in the unsafe pani puri. Experts have spoken about the potential health risks associated with these artificial colorings, suggesting that exposure to these chemicals can lead to a range of health problems. These can range from simple stomach upsets to more serious conditions like heart disease and even some autoimmune disorders. The FSSAI is currently analysing the test results to understand the full impact of these chemicals on public health. They are also collaborating with the Karnataka Health Department to explore potential enforcement measures against offenders. Srinivas K said that they are committed to ensuring food safety across the state, and are studying the data and exploring various options to improve food safety standards, particularly at smaller eateries. This pani puri incident is not an isolated case. The FSSAI had previously banned the use of artificial colours in kebabs, gobi manchurian, and cotton candy due to similar concerns. The FSSAI advises consumers to exercise caution when purchasing street food and inquire about ingredients before consumption. They are also encouraging the public to report any suspected violations of food safety standards.

Food safety officials in Karnataka report cancer-causing agents and artificial colours in pani puri samples

The latest findings from the <keyword id="20000858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-safety" source="keywords">Food Safety</keyword> and Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="20225209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FSSAI" source="keywords">FSSAI</keyword>) have raised serious health concerns regarding <keyword id="20410656" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bakery-items" source="keywords">bakery items</keyword> sold in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka. FSSAI’s recent tests on 235 cake samples across the state revealed that 12 of these samples contained harmful, cancer-causing ingredients. The bakery items in question included popular varieties like red velvet, black forest, and pineapple cakes. <keyword id="21583421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-colours" source="keywords">Artificial colours</keyword> such as Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine were found in the cakes at levels that exceed permissible limits. These <keyword id="23428063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="synthetic-dyes" source="keywords">synthetic dyes</keyword> are commonly used to give cakes an intense, attractive appearance, especially in varieties like red velvet. However, these colours are not without risks. According to studies, prolonged exposure to such chemicals, even at low levels, can increase the risk of cancer. They are also known to cause other health issues such as allergies, asthma, and hyperactivity in children. Allura Red, one of the key culprits identified, has been banned in some countries due to its potential carcinogenic effects. Studies conducted on animals have shown that high doses of this dye can lead to the development of tumours. In addition, other food dyes like Ponceau 4R and Sunset Yellow FCF are suspected of containing contaminants such as benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl, both of which have been linked to cancer. <h2>Impact on public health</h2>The presence of these hazardous chemicals in commonly consumed bakery items is particularly concerning given the long-term <keyword id="19977451" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-risks" source="keywords">health risks</keyword> associated with synthetic dyes. Children and young adults, who often consume colourful cakes at parties and celebrations, are especially vulnerable. Health practitioner have also highlighted that these chemicals could contribute to respiratory problems and potentially lead to cancer over time. Therefore, consumers must be cautious when purchasing visually striking baked goods, as they may contain harmful ingredients. The FSSAI has taken swift action by issuing warnings to the bakeries involved and reminding all food outlets to comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasised that strict action will be taken against businesses that continue to violate food safety standards. Non-compliance with the <keyword id="21256704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-regulations" source="keywords">food regulations</keyword> could lead to legal penalties, including the closure of bakeries found using harmful additives. The FSSAI’s crackdown follows a series of inspections targeting food safety across Karnataka. The department has also previously banned the use of artificial colours in popular street foods like gobi manchurian and kebabs, and it continues to conduct regular inspections of food outlets across the state. Recent enforcement activities have also included tests on paneer, khova, and other food products sold in hotels, tourist spots, and railway stations. <h2>Alternatives to synthetic dyes</h2>In light of these findings, consumers are urged to opt for bakery products made with <keyword id="23428065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="natural-colourants" source="keywords">natural colourants</keyword>, which are safer and free from harmful chemicals. Many bakers in Karnataka are already shifting towards the use of permitted natural colours derived from fruits and vegetables, which pose no risk to health. However, there remains a significant number of bakeries that use artificial dyes to enhance the visual appeal of their products. For consumers, being informed about the ingredients in the foods they purchase is crucial. While brightly coloured cakes may seem appealing, the potential health hazards they carry cannot be overlooked. Cancer-causing dyes have been detected in popular bakery items in Bengaluru — here’s which items you might need to avoid

New Delhi, Nov 25 () Food regulator FSSAI on Monday said that over 1.06 lakh food samples were analysed last fiscal, of which 3.7 per cent were found to be unsafe and 15.8 per cent sub-standard.
 The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) reported 36 per cent rise in civil cases to 2,813 and 86 per cent increase in criminal cases to 18,550, it said in a statement.
 There has been a 67 per cent increase in the number of cases where penalties were imposed to 12,727. A total amount of Rs 32.58 crore has been realised during 2018-19, up 23 per cent from previous year. There have been 701 convictions in criminal cases.
 FSSAI released the data on enforcement efforts by states/UTs in the country. The released data includes samples analysed, non-conforming samples, cases launched, convictions and penalties by states/UTs during the year 2018-19
 "During the year 2018-19, a total of 1,06,459 samples were analysed. While 3.7 pc of these samples were found to be unsafe, 15.8 pc were found to be sub-standard and 9 pc samples had labelling defects," FSSAI said in a statement.
 There has been a 7 per cent increase in the number of samples analysed during 2018-19 as compared to 2017-18 and "25 per cent more samples were found non-conforming compared to the previous year", the regulator said, adding that this indicates there has been better targeting of enforcement efforts by states/UTs.
 "More rigorous enforcement by states is essential to build public trust in food," FSSAI CEO Pawan Agarwal said. 
 He admitted that public trust has been eroded in recent times due to fake news, creating widespread perception of large-scale adulteration in the country.
 FSSAI is working with states and UTs, particularly with weaker ones in this regard, he added.
 "For this, FSSAI is increasing the capacity of state food laboratories and enabling use of private food labs for testing food samples. Enforcement efforts have to be better targeted and preceded by surveillance efforts to identify hotspots and problem areas," Agarwal said.
 Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Delhi and Chandigarh performed well, while states that have performed poorly include Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Telengana, and Uttarakhand.

3.7 pc of over 1.06 lakh food samples analysed in 2018-19 found unsafe: FSSAI

<keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> India wants to manufacture <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword> at all plants after it resumed production at three of its plants - Nanjangud (Karnataka), Moga (Punjab) and Bicholim (Goa) - in the country. 
 
The company is discussing the matter with state authorities. 
 "In compliance with the orders of the High Court of Bombay, fresh samples from these newly manufactured batches will be sent for testing to the three accredited laboratories mandated by the High Court," Nestle said in a communique to the <keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword>. 
 
The company, however, said that it would start the sale of Maggi noodles only after clearance from these three laboratories. 
 
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) earlier sought clarification from Nestle over media reports on resumption of Maggi noodles production. 
 In June, Nestle India was forced to withdraw Maggi from market and stop production following tests by certain labs allegedly finding <keyword id="23204" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="lead">lead</keyword> and MSG beyond permissible limits. 
 This was followed by a ban on Maggi noodles by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>), which said the noodles were "unsafe and hazardous" for consumption. 
 
The company had withdrawn the instant noodle brand from the market. 
 
Nestle India, took a hit of Rs 450 crore, including destroying over 30,000 tonnes of the instant noodles since June. 
 
The company has said that it would continue with the existing formula of the product and would not change their ingredients. 
 
After the ban was imposed, Nestle India had reported a standalone loss of Rs 64.40 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2015, its first quarterly loss in over three decades. 
 
It had posted a net profit of Rs 287.86 crore during the April-June quarter of 2014-15.

Despite finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> safe after testing, the officials have refused to give it a clean chit. 
 
Samples of two-minute Maggi noodles from Goa were sent to a government-run laboratory in Karnataka for re-analysis and it was found that the instant noodles were safe for consumption. 
 
However, Director of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Salim Veljee, refused to give a clean chit. 
 
He said the negative result did not necessarily mean a clean chit for the company's product because of contrary findings made by other state and central government laboratories while testing the Nestle-manufactured noodles, which have been banned in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=goa">Goa</a> as well as across the country. 
 
"The samples of these noodles were subjected for a re-analysis of the said five Maggi noodle products at the Goa State Pollution Control Board laboratory at Patto, Panaji and the results of the analysis were found to be consistent with the findings of the Goa FDA Lab in declaring the lead contents to be below the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm and negative for MSG," Veljee told reporters. 
 
Goa had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">banned sale of Maggi</a> in June 8 and several tonnes of Maggi noodles were destroyed after tests in state-run laboratories across India revealed that the popular snack had excess amounts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MSG">MSG</a> and presence of lead. 
 
On the instructions of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI)</a>, which described the tests conducted in Goa as not up to the mark, new Maggi noodles samples were then sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru, Karnataka for another round of tests, which have only now confirmed the Goa FDA's results. 
 
Veljee added that the CFTRI reports re-confirmed the consistent analytical results findings of the State FDA Goa laboratory, in which all the said five samples of Nestle's Maggie conformed with the Food Safety and Standards Rules/Regulation 2011. 
 
Lead in all the five samples was "reported to be well below the permissible limit as well as negative for the MSG in the said samples, which analysis was performed separately on the noodles and taste maker", he added.

Maggi is safe to eat but no clean chit yet

Have you ever thought about an alternative to <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword>? Well, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is mulling over it. 
 
After the two-minute noodles was banned in India over excess lead content and MSG in it, Nestle India has started working hard to come up with a snack that would replace Maggi till it is repositioned. 
 
"With no clarity over when Maggi in its existing form will be back on shelves, Nestle is working on alternate snacking options," one of two persons who confirmed the development told Economic Times, adding “Snacking is a huge opportunity which Nestle doesn't want to vacate, and it already has an existing backend for the culinary business." 
 
While re-launching Maggi could take several months, Nestle India might launch a ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook food. 
 
Nestle was guarded in its response to ET's queries. "We are working hard to resolve the situation and we aim to be back in the market as soon as we can. Adhering to Nestle's rigorous quality policies and testing protocol, we are confident that we will come back soon, ensuring food safety, as we always do," the Nestle spokesperson told the financial daily. 
 
Maggi noodles accounts for a third of Nestle India’s business with sales of over Rs 2,000 crore. 
 
Due to the ban, the plants in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Goa and Himachal Pradesh are suspended. 
 
Meanwhile, Nestle India is working together to re-build the brand. Nestle Global Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said that the Maggi products were completely safe and were re-called as consumers faith had shaken. 
 
"Food has never been safer. But there is this perception and we have to work on that. The only thing that interests me is to have the product back as soon as possible and that things are cleared up," he told news agency AFP. 
 
"Any health concerns raised by a credible source such as FSSAI will most certainly damage customer loyalty and consideration of a food brand," said David Haigh, CEO of the London-based brand valuation consultancy.
