"We are collecting samples (of Nestle's Cerelac baby cereals) from across the country. It will take 15-20 days to complete the process," Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao told PTI on the sidelines of an Assocham event on food fortification. FSSAI is a statutory body under the administration of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The move comes following concerns about alleged high sugar content in Nestle's baby food products expressed by both the consumer affairs ministry and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) after taking note of a global report published by Swiss NGO Public Eye. The global report has claimed that Nestle sold baby products with higher sugar content in less developed South Asian countries including India, Africa and Latin American nations as compared to markets in Europe. However, Nestle India has maintained that it never compromises on compliance and it has reduced added sugar in baby food products in India by up to 30 per cent depending on variants over the past five years. Earlier, addressing the Assocham event, the FSSAI CEO highlighted the importance of food fortification for human health and called for fortification beyond rice to include millets and other alternative foods. FMCG firms have introduced varieties of millet-based products in the last few years and they can further expand the basket of nutritional foods in the country, he added. The CEO also unveiled an Assocham's knowledge report 'Fortifying India's Future: Significance of Food Fortification and Nutrition' on the occasion. FSSAI is hiring more than 250 people for various profiles in India

Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, <keyword id="2627479" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prahlad-singh-patel" source="Orion">Prahlad Singh Patel</keyword> on Thursday said that the Centre will encourage and promote not just the production of millets but also processed millet products for the global market. "Next year, i.e. 2023, is the International Year of Millets. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> produces 40 per cent of world's millets. Our government has made tremendous efforts to promote millets and not just for production but also for processed millet foods for supplying to international markets," Patel told mediapersons. The only condition is that the company should be Indian," Patel said, and gave example of several traditional Indian food items that just "need to be validated by scientific documentation of traditional practices". "India has traditionally been a supporter of plant-based food. The agreement was signed in the presence of <keyword id="11579676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shri-arun-singhal">Shri Arun Singhal</keyword>, CEO, FSSAI, and Professor Bejon Misra, Adviser, Public Affairs, ASCI, on July 1st. As per the agreement, ASCI will identify advertisements which prima facie violate provisions of Food Safety And Standards (Advertising And Claims) Regulations, 2018, and FSSAI would further investigate these. Under the agreement, ASCI will set up a three-member expert panel to evaluate F&amp;B advertising identified by the ASCI monitoring team. There has been a marked increase in the number of complaints against F&amp;B ads during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last financial year (FY) ASCI has processed a total number of 285 complaints compared to 175 in FY 2019-20. So, claims by F&amp;B brands, particularly those related to health and nutrition, are under greater scrutiny. Food and health continue to be important focus areas for ASCI. With this association, ASCI further strengthens its 360-degree approach of protecting consumers as well as guiding brands, agencies, and influencers towards greater responsibility. Manisha Kapoor, Secretary-General, ASCI, said: “With this agreement, ASCI will intensify its scrutiny of the F&amp;B sector. We will tap our National Advertising Monitoring Service, which monitors over 900 TV channels and publications, and over 3,000 websites. Besides national brands, we will examine regional and local ones. Our experts, with decades of experience in the F&amp;B sector, will shortlist those advertisements that require further scrutiny by FSSAI.” Subhash Kamath, Chairman, ASCI, added: “This is a significant collaboration. No longer is it just the biriyani or butter chicken, the sheer variety available often puts the best restaurants to shame. From homemade shepherd's pie to pork belly with tingmo to creatively decorated blueberry-vanilla in American buttercream cake, the offerings are beautifully varied. The business models are diverse — from <keyword id="2067878" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Home-cooks">home cooks</keyword> sharing their daily menus on their residential colony WhatsApp groups to operating entirely out of social media channels like Facebook and Instagram. "For me, the moment you put numbers into something you love, it takes the fun out of it. I am lucky enough to be able to concentrate on the fun part of cooking while my husband helps to bring some method to this madness by taking care of everything else, for now. But given how painful the business and backend side of it can be, I would definitely be more than happy to outsource that part of the operations," says Tarannum Sehgal, whose full-time role is in a Michelin Kitchen in South of France, but she started her venture T-Pop! In Delhi to bide her time while she waits for her restaurant to open in April. Conosh, a company co-owned by three friends Anshumala, Neha and Vaibhav, is basically a conduit between home chefs and foodies. Conosh now has over 800 chefs and has delivered to over 15,000 customers in Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru. While the idea of starting a home kitchen sounds ideal, the journey is far from easy. Nicole Juneja and her mum Kusuma Juneja started their venture, Mood, back in 2018. Initially, they operated purely on the takeaway model, but the pandemic forced them to change their stance and start delivering food. "While the lockdown helped us grow our business, in fact, it was our best year ever, a key challenge we faced was trying to figure out the logistics, which is primarily the deliveries. It's hard to find a reliable partner," says Juneja. <div type="image" title="Vanilla fairy cakes" msid="81494875" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Vanilla fairy cakes&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Can't have your cake and eat it too Business Insider spoke to Anshumala, one of the co-founders of Conosh, who tells us that while the pandemic saw a surge in both home chefs and consumers, the one thing the consumers often gripe over is the price. "Diners particularly talk about the prices and they compare it to restaurant food. However, it cannot be directly compared to restaurant food for a variety of reasons. The first and the most obvious ones are obviously because these guys are working on a much smaller scale, and they're making everything fresh so they don't have the economies of scale like restaurant kitchens. Also, as an example, we have a home chef called Sumitra who specialises in Andhra Brahmin food in Bangalore and she travels to Vishakhapatnam to get some of her ingredients in order to maintain the authenticity of the food she offers. So, of course, the cost of her offering will be higher than a restaurant's." Recipe for growth — limit your orders "While the lockdown definitely helped us expand our business, increasing our scale makes you realise the limitations of a home kitchen. And you do have to set an upper limit for orders and things like that, just because there's only that much space and equipment," Juneja tells us. Along with that, there was the issue of little or no additional help in terms of staff, especially during the lockdown that made operations so much harder for home chefs. <div type="image" title="Christmas rum fruit cake" msid="81494895" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Christmas rum fruit cake&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The not-so-palatable cost? Touching upon the point raised by Anshumala, the mere fact that home chefs operate on a smaller scale, their cost of ingredients is also much higher. Plus, what sets them apart is the fact that they use the best and most authentic ingredients that don't come cheap. "While the cost to deliver items may have reduced a notch, the material and packaging costs have also shot up, which, in turn, has led me to charge more. Plus, earlier, I used to go to wholesale markets to get the raw materials that I can no longer do thanks to the pandemic, which has impacted my costs," says Shweta Andrews, founder of Bakes Ahoy, a business specialising in artisanal and premium baked goods. Fill out a few forms before you do the filling In November 2020, the government made it mandatory for all home chefs who have a turnover of ₹12 lakh and above to have a Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="154680" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>) registration number. Failure to do so could result in a fine of ₹5 lakhs or face jail time. But while most imagined this would be a huge pain, it really isn't. All you have to do is log into the website, submit a few documents, and pay a nominal sum and within 2-4 weeks, the job is done. However, in June 2020, FSSAI launched a new cloud-based food safety compliance online platform called <a target="_blank" href="https://foscos.fssai.gov.in/" class="editor-rtfLink">Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS)</a>, which will eventually replace the current Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS). "FoSCoS is conceptualised to provide one point stop for all engagement of an FBO [Food Business Operators] with the department for any regulatory compliance transaction," according to the government <a target="_blank" href="https://fssai.gov.in/upload/press_release/2020/06/5ed4be98c59aaPress_Release_FoSCoS_01_06_2020.pdf" class="editor-rtfLink">press release</a>. This system will be launched in a phased manner, and Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Goa, Delhi, Odisha, Manipur, Chandigarh, Puducherry and Ladakh are a part of the first phase. If you live in these states, it will be prudent to register with FoSCoS at a nominal fee of ₹100 per year even if your turnover is not as much under the 'Petty Food Business Operators' section. Feeling the heat With thousands joining the army of home chefs, the competition has multiplied, leading to everyone trying out new methods to woo clients -- from sending personalised notes to offering special Onam Sadya meal boxes with all the fixins' including a banana leaf and directions on how to arrange the food items. "Because the competition is so stiff, I continuously have to come up with new ideas and designs for cakes, which is a good thing because I learn more and improve my skills," however, Andrews adds, "now that there are thousands of home bakers in the market, I now have to put in money on Instagram and Facebook to promote myself."

Many home chef businesses are tasting success in India, but it's not a cakewalk

New Delhi, Jan 9 () Food safety regulator FSSAI on Thursday appealed food business operators (FBOs) to be aware of fake websites being operated for providing registration and licensing services.
 The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) also said it will not be responsible for loss or damage suffered by the FBO on account of deficiency of services by such websites.
 FBOs can apply for licence or registration only through the FSSAI portal.
 "FSSAI appeals to public to exercise care and caution while applying for FSSAI licence and registration as food business operator. Only FSSAI's licensing portal should be used for registration/ license application," FSSAI Chief Executive Officer Pawan Agarwal said in a statement.
 In case of need for any help, applicants may approach the regional offices of FSSAI or jurisdictional designated officer or food safety officer for guidance, details of which are available at www.fssai.gov.in, he added.
 FSSAI said it has come to its notice that a number of websites are operating with the domain name comprising the word 'FSSAI' along with suffix or affix 'registration', 'license', etc. Some of such websites also use the logo of FSSAI.
 The regulator has not authorised any entity to register its website with the domain name comprising the word 'FSSAI' or to use its name and logo, or represent FSSAI as such, it said.
 In the event that any one intends to avail the services of any such online websites for registration or licence as food business operator, it is advisable that background check of such third party should be carried out with regard to authenticity or reliability of its services, it added.
 FSSAI has also launched a Food Safety Mitra Scheme wherein Digital Mitras are being trained to assist FBOs for online filings related to licensing and registration, at nominal charges. LUX HRS

FSSAI asks food operators to be aware of fake websites

New Delhi, May 6 () Food regulator FSSAI on Wednesday said it has started an online training programme for food business operators (FBOs) to help them maintain safety and hygiene across food supply chain in view of the coronavirus outbreak. "COVID-19 is posing a serious challenge for food supply chains worldwide. The challenge is to ensure uninterrupted food supply to consumers whilst containing the risk of COVID-19 for the workers, customers and all participants in the food supply chain," FSSAI said in a statement. FSSAI had already issued detailed guidelines for food businesses. "Further, to enable and equip food businesses to function and reduce the risk of contagion, FSSAI has launched a training programme for food businesses under its flagship Food Safety Training &amp; Certification programme (FoSTaC)," it said. The training will be conducted online through empanelled training partners. Food businesses can visit FoSTaC website or connect with FoSTaC training partners directly for the certification programme. The training programme caters to all stakeholders in the food ecosystem comprising manufacturers, packers, transporters, retailers and food delivery partners and aggregators. The agencies/NGOs serving food in places including langar, community kitchens, among others, should also get their food handlers trained for COVID-19 precautionary measures, it said. COVID-19: FSSAI launches online training programme for food businesses

New Delhi, Dec 31 () Food safety regulator FSSAI on Tuesday said it will spend Rs 20 crore to procure rapid food testing kits or devices for state-level field officers across the country.
 So far, the regulator has approved 30 rapid food testing kits/devices, which ensure faster, better, and cheaper real-time testing of food based on the FSSAI regulations finalised this year, it said.
 "There is a market potential of Rs 1,000 crore for such kits/devices in India alone. Wider use of rapid food testing kits and devices for food testing would be a game changer for India in 2020 and build greater public confidence in food available in the marketplace," Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) CEO Pawan Agarwal said.
 As of now, over Rs 5 crore has been spent on 30 devices which can provide quicker and validated results for tests conducted on different food products such as milk and edible oils, amongst others, he said in a statement.
 "The FSSAI would spend over Rs 20 crore and procure rapid food testing kits and devices. These would be provided to field officers through the state governments," he added.
 According to the FSSAI, only two out of 30 rapid kits are indigenously manufactured, rest are all imported despite the fact that many research and scientific institutions are engaged in development of such kits and devices.
 Steps have been initiated to make these devices available on government eProcurement marketplace (GeM) portal so that further purchase can be made by state governments and local bodies on their own.
 The FSSAI has initiated steps so that indigenously developed kits/devices are validated and approved under the FSSAI regulations on a fast track basis, it added.
 Aggarwal hoped that various States would also buy such kits/devices from the GeM portal to make them widely available with the enforcement officials.
 Once, such kits and devices are widely used for regulatory purposes, food industry would also begin to use them for internal quality assurance and quality control purposes, he said. LUX LUX MR

FSSAI to spend Rs 20cr for procuring food testing kits

New Delhi, Mar 31 () Food regulator FSSAI on Tuesday declared import clearance of food items and testing at notified labs as essential services during the lockdown period. "The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority (FSSAI) has classified the import clearance of food items and functioning of notified food testing laboratories (including National Food Labs) under Essential Services during the COVID-19," it said in a statement. All personnel who are assigned the charge of these essential services are required to be available in office on all working days from Monday to Friday between 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM in order to facilitate the trade as well as ensure smoother operation of related services across the country.The FSSAI has its Offices at six locations namely Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Cochin and Tuticorinand. These offices are fully operational for scrutiny of applications, visual inspection and sampling for import clearance to ensure expeditious processing of applications and timely issuance of NOC. "FSSAI is keeping a close watch on the situation. It will continue to assist food importers as well as ensure regular supervision and testing of food items and will take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of food products," the statement said. To prevent food wastage, Food regulator <keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword> and <keyword id="6372077" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nasscom">Nasscom</keyword> Foundation have joined hands to a develop an app and set up a 24x7 helpline number to connect donors with surplus edibles to food distribution organisations. "India will soon have access to a common help-line and a mobile application 'Food Donation in India' to donate food to the needy. FSSAI and NASSCOM Foundation have signed an MoU today to jointly build a technology platform for Food Donation in India," FSSAI said in a statement. The platform will also facilitate registration of surplus food distribution organisations, and initially, the network of 81 such organizations across PAN India, known as the Indian Food Sharing Alliance (IFSA) will be a part of this platform, it said.
 The solution, FSSAI said, will provide an easy accessible platform that will cater to different stakeholders like food businesses, hoteliers, caterers, individuals etc and facilitate food donations in any part of the country.
 FSSAI CEO Pawan Agarwal said that this would definitely provide a recognition to the organisations involved in surplus food distribution and would help in reducing the wastage of food in the country through food donation.
 Ashok Pamidi, CEO, Nasscom Foundation said the collaboration is a significant step in the direction of leveraging tech for solutions and the foundation hopes more such engagements in future.

New Delhi, Dec 23 () National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) and food regulator FSSAI will jointly organise national street food festival in the national capital during December 25-29.
The 11th National Street Food Festival will be organised at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium here and around 75,000 people are expected to visit the festival.
During the event, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will also organise its second edition of the 'National Eat Right Mela' to promote healthy foods.
"Through this mela, we want to give a unique and distinct identify to our
local and street food," FSSAI CEO Pawan Kumar Agarwal told reporters here.
"We are also offering a platform to the packaged food industry to showcase innovation in terms of newer areas like reformulation of food products, healthier food variants as well as sustainable and enhanced packaging solutions," he added.
Agarwal said there will be a complete package for people -- delicious street food, entertainment and education -- in this festival.
The theme of this year's festival is 'healthier diets' where the idea is to focus various initiatives of FSSAI around healthy eating through gamification (in an interactive manner through games and quizzes).
Food Safety pavilion will focus on demonstration of rapid food testing kits/devices.
On December 26, Health minister Harsh Vardhan will launch the 'Network for Scientific Co-operation for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition' (NetSCoFAN), a network of research and academic institutions working in the area of food and nutrition.
Sangeeta Singh, Head of Programs, NASVI, said: "This festival, over the years, has helped mainstream various street vending communities. We expect a footfall of around 75,000 during the five day festival".
Arbind Singh, National Coordinator, NASVI, said about 130 street vendors would get the opportunity to showcase their regional cuisines to thousands of visitors from various walks of life. MJH BAL
