Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

India Inc. stares at an earnings dearth in Q2, FMCG, auto, and consumer durables falter

Nifty was trading at 24,300.40, down by 0.19%, while Sensex dipped by around 74 points to trade at 79,575.50, as of 9:40 am on August 13th, 2024. Apollo Hospitals, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Bank and <keyword id="19952948" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="axis-bank" source="keywords">Axis Bank</keyword> gaines early advantage during trade early morning, while HDFC Bank, BPCL, Shri Ram Finance, Asian Paints and Divis Labs were amidst the leading laggards. Most broad market indices opened the day in red, with most mid cap and small cap indices inching up in green, ahead of frontline indices. Amidst sectoral indices, bank, auto, financial services, media and metal were trading in red, while pharma, PSU, realty and healthcare indices were trading in green. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares noted that "after swinging on either sides, index settled 12th August trade marginally lower at 24,317. After testing the higher end of consolidation, the Index has formed a Long Legged DOJI candlestick pattern. A firm close above the 24,450-24,470 zone is a must to resume its uptrend while the lower side seems to be protected at 24,200. The range of <keyword id="22183748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BankNifty" source="keywords">BankNifty</keyword> is intact i.e. 49,730-50,730 and awaiting a breakout for a clear picture. Selected <keyword id="22467474" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-counters" source="keywords">IT counters</keyword> have gained momentum indicating a resumption of an uptrend (Infosys). With a bullish engulfing candlestick pattern, the <keyword id="20458349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metal-sector" source="keywords">metal sector</keyword> reversed from its long trendline support suggesting a trend reversal (NMDC, Welcorp). After a stellar rally, some profit-booking corrections can be anticipated in the <keyword id="22767421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pharma-segment" source="keywords">pharma segment</keyword>. From the <keyword id="20041689" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG-sector" source="keywords">FMCG sector</keyword>, one should keep an eye on the sugar counters (Avadh Sugar)". With CPI numbers coming in yesterday, retail inflation dipped to a 5-year low, to 3.5% in July 2024. Says Suman Chowdhury, Executive Director and Chief Economist Acuité Ratings &amp; Research, “given the very strong base effect at play, the headline CPI inflation has suddenly dropped to 3.5% YoY from 5.1% in July’24. While this print is a 5 year low, it’s perhaps too early to celebrate such a low figure. Expectedly, the annualized food inflation has also started to taper with the onset of the monsoon from 9.4% in June to 5.4% in July on the back of a precipitous fall in vegetable inflation to 6.8% from 29.3%. Clearly, these are also the impact of the base factor since sequential inflation remains significant in both overall food inflation and vegetable inflation at 2.8% and 14.1% respectively". "One important takeaway is the rise of core inflation to 3.4% in July vs 3.1% in Jun'24 on the back of a rise in telecom tariffs and gold prices. In our opinion, core inflation has bottomed out and is likely to move higher towards 4.0% amidst strong economic activity", she continued.

Stock market today: Nifty, Sensex see muted starts, ICICI, Kotak, Axis bank gain lead

Mostly all broad market indices, including small cap and mid cap indices, jumped over 1%, with the exception of India VIX, which slipped 8.88% during trade today. With a hidden bullish divergence in the RSI, the <keyword id="19916570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-sector" source="keywords">IT sector</keyword> has formed a bullish candle around its pattern breakout point suggesting a resumption of its uptrend. <keyword id="20458349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="metal-sector" source="keywords">Metal sector</keyword> stands at its long-term trendline support; bounce can be expected but it will be short-lived. Stock-specific buying can be anticipated from the defensive segments i.e. the FMCG and pharma. "A lot of Textile stocks have given a strong move in yesterday's trade, one should opt for buy on a dips strategy and we have coverage on some stocks namely BASML, Cantabil, Nahar Spinning, and Welspun Living", he said. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities explains that based on the short-term market structure, the trend-setting levels are 23,900/78,290. If the market falls below this, it may decline to 23,700 or 23,600/78,000-77,800, where it has support from retracements and long-term averages. It's advisable to consider selective buying around this level. "On the upside, the major resistance levels are 24,150/79,000 and 24,400/79,900. It's recommended that weak, long positions be reduced to around 24,300/24,400. If the market moves sharply above 24,400/79,900 levels it may compel short sellers to cover short sell positions", he continued.

However, a fresh uptrend rally is possible only after the dismissal of 24,950/81,800. Above that, the market could move up till 25,050-25,200/82,000-82,400. On the flip side, below 24,800/81,200 we could see further weakness till 24,700/81,000. If the markets are really strong then we can see a strong reversal after hitting the levels of 24,700/81,000. In case the market sustains below 24,700 then we could see the level of 24,500 in the near term", he continued.

With the Congress and the Senate coming under Republican control and President Trump exercising power without bothering about another term in office, hugely transformational decisions are possible in the months following Trump's assumption of office. These decisions may turn out to be both good and bad" said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. "His pro-business initiative of 'America First' can strengthen the American economy. But if he walks his talk and imposes a 60% tariff on Chinese imports and a 10 to 20% tariff on imports from other countries, that would trigger inflation and jeopardise the Fed's policy of containing inflation, necessitating a rethink of the Fed's present policy of rate cut. This has the potential to negatively impact global stock markets,” Vijayakumar added. In the sectoral indices, a mixed performance was seen on the National Stock Exchange, with Nifty Auto, Nifty Pharma, Nifty IT, and Nifty FMCG gaining, while Nifty Bank, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Private Bank declined. In the quarterly announcements today, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Trent, Rail Vikas Nigam, Linde India, Lupin, NHPC, and Aditya Birla Fashion &amp; Retail are some of the major companies set to announce their second-quarter financial performance. In other Asian markets on Thursday, Japan's Nikkei index was down marginally by 0.4%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.68%. Nifty and Sensex continue downward trend, selling continues despite Trump's victory

India's diversified entity <keyword id="19896958" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ITC" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="ITC">ITC</keyword> plans to open more hotels overseas with neighbouring countries and the Middle East as primary target markets after opening of its first international property here, company Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="20049280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjiv-Puri" source="keywords">Sanjiv Puri</keyword> said on Thursday. The company's arm <keyword id="20032522" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITC-Hotels" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ITC Hotels" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="ITC Hotels">ITC Hotels</keyword>, which had opened 22 new properties in the last 24 months, plans to add another 70 hotels in the next five years in India as part of expansion plans in the <keyword id="20402233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hospitality-sector" source="keywords">hospitality sector</keyword>. Besides the hotels business, the company will look for opportunities to expand the presence of <keyword id="19931572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="FMCG" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="FMCG">FMCG</keyword> and other verticals in new overseas markets as well. "We are open to exploring opportunities that come about. I think we have strong credentials in hospitality which we can take outside India now. Very clearly at the moment the focus is on proximal markets, be it for hospitality, be it for FMCG...," Puri said here at a press conference after the opening of the 352-room luxury property, <keyword id="20911944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itc-ratnadipa" source="keywords">ITC Ratnadipa</keyword> here. He said as the company explores and understands a place for a particular business, it may look at it as a market for other verticals as well. Citing the example of Nepal, Puri said,"We started with other businesses and are now looking at hospitality (there). Here (in Sri Lanka) we have started with hospitality...as we explore and understand the place, we will look at possibilities in some of our other sectors as well." On overseas expansion of the hospitality business, while the company's focus is more on 'proximal markets', he said,"We are open to it if there are some interesting opportunities beyond it. We will certainly be interested in pursuing that." When asked if ITC is looking at the Middle East as a market for the hospitality business, he said it is a vibrant economy right now with terrific growth plans and "if opportunity comes our way then we will certainly explore that". Puri also said the company will look to expand in more destinations in Sri Lanka going forward. "This (opening of ITC Ratnadipa) is the starting point and yes, we want to expand and grow the economy and contribute to the development of tourism in Sri Lanka," he said. When asked about ITC's overall expansion plans in the hospitality sector, he said,"We have a very healthy pipeline of 70 hotels in five years." All these 70 hotels are for the Indian domestic market and most of them will be the upscale segments. He, however, said "(For) overseas we're just starting our journey. So we have not yet got to the stage to start putting a number right here." On investments planned for the overall expansion, he did not share a specific number but said "between renovation and new properties will spend somewhere between Rs 700 crore to Rs 1,000 crore a year". When asked about the progress of the demerger of ITC Hotels and its planned public listing, Puri said it is happening in line with the indicated timelines and is expected "before the second half of this year or the end of this year". At its new property here, the company had invested about USD 500 million. It was inaugurated on Thursday by Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. The ITC Ratnadipa or 'Island of Gems' has 352 guest rooms, suites and service apartments, each with private balconies with waterfront views. Earlier in the day, speaking at the opening of the new hotel, Puri said,"It is very natural for us to specifically focus on markets in proximal areas, encouraged also by our Prime Minister's (Narendra Modi) vision of neighbourhood first where Sri Lanka has a very special position. ITC is deeply committed to growing our presence and contributing to hospitality in the region." ITC plans to open more hotels overseas: CMD Sanjiv Puri

In a range-bound trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex gained for the second day in a row, rising 102.44 points or 0.13 per cent to close at 80,905.30. During the day, it rose 149.97 points or 0.18 per cent to hit an intra-day high of 80,952.83. Rising for the fifth straight session, the NSE Nifty went up by 71.35 points or 0.29 per cent to end at 24,770.20. "The Indian market traded on a tight range with a positive bias supported by strong DII flows. While defensive sector outperformed due to a continued shift in portfolio towards FMCG, consumer, commodities, and pharma. "Global markets exhibited a mildly cautious tone ahead of the release of the FOMC minutes later today. Currently, the expectation of a rate cut remains high, given the fall in US inflation and moderation in overall growth," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said. Among the Sensex firms, Titan, Asian Paints, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, Nestle India, Bajaj Finserv and Bharti Airtel were among the gainers. In contrast, UltraTech Cement, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, Power Grid, HDFC Bank, HCL Technology, State Bank of India and ICICI Bank were the laggards. The European markets were trading higher on Wednesday. In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong were closed in the negative territory while Seoul ended higher on Wednesday. The US stock markets settled lower in overnight trade on Tuesday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) again turned sellers on Tuesday as they offloaded equities worth Rs 1,457.96 crore, according to exchange data. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought equities worth Rs 2,252.10 crore on Tuesday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.28 per cent to USD 77.42 a barrel. The 30-share BSE Sensex rebounded 378.18 points or 0.47 per cent to settle at 80,802.86. Rising for the fourth consecutive session, the NSE Nifty surged 126.20 points or 0.51 per cent to 24,698.85. Markets extend gains on buying in FMCG, consumer stocks; Sensex rises 100 pts

Both indices, <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> and <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> saw a bloodbath as they opened for trade on 25th July 2024. While Sensex was down by over 500 points, inching down the 80,000 mark to trade at 79,616.53 points. Nifty was also down by 0.72% trading at 24,237.65 points. All broad market indices opened the day in red, except for <keyword id="158701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-VIX" source="Orion">India VIX</keyword>, which inched up by 1.93% in early trade. As for sectoral indices, all except for media opened in red, with bank, financial services, metal and private banks dipped over 1% each in early trade. <keyword id="80292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sbi-life" source="Orion">SBI Life</keyword>, <keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword>, <keyword id="90593" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="larsen-and-toubro" source="Orion">Larsen and Toubro</keyword>, Nestle India and HDFC bank took early gains in trade, while Axis bank, Hindalco, Shri Ram Finance, Tata Steel and Coal India were amongst the leading laggards. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares noted that the level of 24,200 will remains a crucial support and an early indication from <keyword id="17430379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GIFT-Nifty" source="Orion">GIFT Nifty</keyword> suggests a tepid opening of the Indian equities around the similar levels. "A sustainable move below the mentioned support level will pull the index further to 24,000. On the flip side, 24,450 will act as a stiff hurdle. Bank Nifty is likely to remain in the grip of bears. Among the sectors, <keyword id="34523" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG" source="Orion">FMCG</keyword>, IT and pharma are likely to provide some support to the index while high beta segments such as realty and metal will add to the pressure", he continued. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research highlighted that from a technical standpoint, there is selling pressure at higher levels. However, the medium-term market structure remains positive, which could offer an opportunity to buy on dips. "We anticipate that the 20-day SMA (simple moving average) at 24,300/79,700 would act as a key level for the day's trend determination. If the market moves above 24,300/79,700, it can rise to 24,500-24,650/80,500-80,750. Conversely, breaking below the 20-day SMA or 24,300/79,700 could lead to increased selling pressure, possibly causing the market to test levels around 24,150-24,100/79,300-79,000. Given that it's the day of the monthly expiry of F&amp;O contracts, there could be a rebound from lower levels. Our strategy is to consider buying between 24,200 and 24,100 levels, with a stop loss at 24,000", explained Chouhan.

Stock market opening: Nifty, Sensex open in red, Sensex dips over 500 points in early trade on July 25th, 2024

Both indices, <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> and <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword>, closed the day in red. While Nifty was down by 0.27% and closed at 24,413.50, Sensex also dipped over 200 points and closed at 80,148.88 points on July 24th, 2024. <keyword id="20079495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Life" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Life" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Life">HDFC Life</keyword> (up by 4.36%), <keyword id="19924892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tech Mahindra" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Tech Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> (up by 3.12%), <keyword id="19908646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BPCL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BPCL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BPCL">BPCL</keyword> (up by 2.91%), <keyword id="19903558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTPC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NTPC" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NTPC">NTPC</keyword> (up by 2.67%) and <keyword id="19906967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tata Motors" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Tata Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> (up by 2.46%) were amongst the top gainers of the day. On the other hand, Bajaj Finserv (down by 2.09%), Tata Consumers (down by 1.90%), Britannia (down by 1.88%), Axis Bank (down by 1.82%) and Bajaj Finance (down by 1.67%) were amongst the leading laggards. Bajaj Finance reported its Q1FY25 results recently. While its profits rose 14% YoY to Rs 3,912 crore, the firm's net interest income also reported a 25% jump. However, the stock was trading at Rs 6,614.90, down by over 1% today. The company's loan losses and provisions during April-June 2024 period jumped to Rs 1,685 crore, as opposed to Rs 995 crore during April-June 2023. Most midcap and small cap indices registered significant growth today. Mid cap 100 was up by 1.04%, small cap 100 was up by 1.76%. However, India VIX dipped by as much as 7.72%. Small cap 50 (up by 1.74%), small cap 250 (up by 1.86%) and microcaps (up by 2.68%) also saw healthy leads during the day. As for sectoral indices, consumer durables and oil and gas were up by over 1%, while media gained over 2% during the day. Auto, bank, <keyword id="19931572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg" source="keywords">FMCG</keyword>, PSU and private banks closed the day in red. Mr. Aditya Gaggar Director of Progressive Shares noted that a mixed trend was seen in the markets where mid and smallcap segments were seen compounding their morning gains while Bank Nifty-led correction dragged the index lower to end the session at 24,413.50 with a loss of 65.55 points. "Media was the top gainer among the sectors followed by energy while profit-booking-led correction was seen in the FMCG segment. On the daily chart, the index has formed a spinning top candlestick pattern indicating indecisiveness between the bulls and bears. The level of 24,200 will remains a crucial support while 24,560 is considered as an immediate resistance", Gaggar continued. Out of the 2,770 stocks traded during the day, 1,992 stocks saw advances, while 700 declined, and 78 others remained unchanged. 130 stocks hit their 52-week high during the day, while 14 stocks hit their 52-week low price. 210 stocks hit the upper circuit, or maximum permissible trading price during a singular trading session, while 46 stocks hit the lower circuit, or the minimum permissible price allowed during one trading session.
