The Bombay High Court on Wednesday ordered fresh testing of <keyword id="92247" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="johnson-johnson" source="Orion">Johnson &amp; Johnson</keyword> <keyword id="1599878" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="baby-powder" source="Orion">baby powder</keyword> samples and permitted the company to manufacture the product but to not <keyword id="6368389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sell" source="Orion">sell</keyword> it, as per the Maharashtra government order. The company had filed a petition challenging two orders of the state government- one dated September 15 cancelling the license and the second dated September 20 ordering to immediately stop manufacturing and sale of the company's baby powder product. The orders were passed by the joint commissioner and licensing authority of the state <keyword id="54048" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="food-and-drug-administration" source="Orion">Food and Drug Administration</keyword> (<keyword id="6354656" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fda" source="Orion">FDA</keyword>). The government based its orders on the report of the Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata, which found the powder contained a higher pH level than prescribed. A division bench of Justices S V Gangapurwala and S G Dige on Wednesday directed the FDA to collect fresh samples from the company's factory in the Mulund area of Mumbai within three days. The sample would then be sent to three laboratories - two government labs and a private one - for testing. "The samples shall be sent to the <keyword id="580086" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-drug-testing-laboratory" source="Orion">Central Drug Testing Laboratory</keyword>, west zone, FDA lab and the Intertech Laboratory for testing," the court said. "The labs shall submit a report within one week thereafter," it added. Senior counsel Ravi Kadam, appearing for the company, sought that the court till then permits the company to at least start manufacturing the product. "The petitioner is restrained from selling or distributing the baby powder product by the government. The company shall abide by this order. If the company chooses to manufacture the product then it would be at their own risk," the bench said. The HC posted the matter for further hearing on November 30. The company had in its plea said 14 random batches of February, March and September 2022 were tested by an independent public testing laboratory and all were found to be well within the prescribed pH value. The leading Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) manufacturer said it has been making the baby powder at its Mulund plant for the last 57 years and its license was renewed in January 2020. The company also said due to the license revocation, it suffered a daily loss of Rs 2.5 crore based on the market value of the goods sold. The announcement was made on the occasion of World Milk Day. “We are extremely bullish on Winkin’ Cow and want to be a dominant player in the milk-based beverages category. We plan to extend our offerings to various segments of the dairy drinks category, from affordable stock keeping units to premium and indulgent experiences and are looking for an all-India outreach with a focus on top metros,” said Varun Berry, managing director of Britannia Industries. Winkin’ Cow has a strong presence in South India, but the company now plans to extend it to the North as well. The company aims to grow its brand by 50-60% annually with the infusion of consumer-led franchise-building as well as portfolio expansions. Abhishek Sinha, chief business officer - dairy business at Britannia Industries added that Wilkin’ Cow is one of Britannia’s most successful product innovations. The brand currently offers milkshakes, flavoured milk and lassi. “The category of dairy beverages in India is evolving and growing rapidly, driven by a large young population and consumers’ inclination to experiment with newer and healthier food and drink formats. Launch of our dairy facility at Ranjangaon is a firm step forward toward this commitment and a huge boost to our vision of making Britannia a global total foods company,” Sinha said. Britannia Industries — which sells products in more than 80 countries across the globe — claims to be growing at the pace of one new geography a year, in terms of local manufacturing operations. The company has a turnover of ₹13,000 crore with several brands under its wing like Good Day, Tiger, NutriChoice, Milk Bikis, Marie Gold, Little Hearts and others. Britannia clocked in a profit of ₹1,516 crore in FY22. The company’s revenue also increased by close to ₹1,000 crore to ₹14,359 crore in the same time frame. Winkin’ Cow crosses ₹100 crore in sales, boosts Britannia’s vision to become a ‘total’ foods company

<ul><li><keyword id="6359432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="britannia" source="Orion">Britannia</keyword>’s net profit plummeted nearly 23% on both quarterly and annual basis in July to September 2021</li><li>The company has been witnessing unprecedented inflation in market prices of palm oil, industrial fuel and packaging material.</li><li>Sunil D’Souza of Tata Consumer Products expects that the food inflation will worsen in the October-December quarter.</li></ul>The higher input costs has been a major pain point for all fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) players — including <keyword id="6361485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marico" source="Orion">Marico</keyword>, <keyword id="75190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nestle" source="Orion">Nestle</keyword>, Hindustan Unilever, Britannia and <keyword id="29464" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parle" source="Orion">Parle</keyword> to name a few. The subsequent, rather constant, price increase across product lines has been the only saving grace for this segment to sustain their profits. However, this too may not be working as effectively as the segment may have imagined. The simple reason behind it is the rising inflation. The king of cookies, Britannia, has been increasing the prices of its products for several quarters, yet its profit has been declining. In the July to September 2021 quarter (Q2 of FY2022), the company’s net profit plummeted nearly 23% on both quarterly and yearly basis, despite increase in revenue and sales. <div type="image" title="Cookie king Britannia is unable to grow its profit despite a price increase" msid="87601047" hostid="261"></div> A similar trend was witnessed in April to June quarter of 2021 as well. Britannia, in its quarterly financial statement release on November 8, highlighted that it has been witnessing “unprecedented” inflation in market prices of palm oil at 54%, industrial fuel at 35% and packaging material at 30%. This is leading to an overall inflation in the July to September quarter to 14%. The company — which makes brands like Good Day, Tiger, NutriChoice, Milk Bikis and Marie Gold — initiated “necessary price increases” across its portfolio in order to mitigate the impact of the rising input cost, Britannia’s managing director Varun Berry said. Berry, on a call with analysts on August 2, said, “It’s a very high inflation number that we are currently sitting on. A situation like this, just necessitates [price increase]. Cost efficiency can never take care of this kind of inflation. Two-three percent we can usually take care of, but this necessitates price increase and that’s why we move forward with that.” Neha Khanna, director at investment banking and financial advisory firm Valpro, told Business Insider that apart from the rising input cost there are several other factors that could be leading to Britannia’s reducing profit. This includes stretched out working capital, marketing costs and more. Britannia’s shares fell 3% as of 12:25 p.m on November 9. This was majorly triggered by its financial performance in the last quarter. Valpro’s Khanna also noted that the companies could look at changing the pack sizes by selling less for the same price, however that always has the risk of hitting consumer sentiments in some ways. “That’s a classic FMCG tactic to ensure costs are saved,” she said. Britannia is unable to improve its profit despite a price increase — what’s next

New Delhi, Jan 24 () Haridwar-based Patanjali group, which has acquired debt-ridden Ruchi Soya, is expecting Rs 25,000 crore turnover this fiscal, and aims to become the country's largest FMCG company in coming years, Yoga Guru Ramdev said on Friday.
The company will register a joint turnover of Rs 25,000 crore in the current fiscal ending March 2020, in which around Rs 12,000 crore would be contributed by Patanjali group firms and Rs 13,000 crore will come from Ruchi Soya, he said.
"In next five years, we would have a turnover of around Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 1 lakh crore and will become the largest FMCG company, replacing HUL," Ramdev said.
Patanjali, which acquired Ruchi Soya in an Corporate Insolvency Resolution for around Rs 4,500 crore, is also looking to expand its product line.
"We will launch three new products under Nutrela brand targeting the health conscious people, targeting the people suffering from diseases such as heart, cholesterol and high blood pressure," he said.
These products will include premium Oil Nutrela Gold, Nutrela Honey and Nutrela Protein Atta.
"We are expecting three times growth from Ruchi Soya in coming years," Ramdev said, adding it will also lessen burden of import of edible oil from other countries and make India self dependent in this sector.
Patanjali will also continue to have Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit as the brand ambassador for Ruchi Soya's Mahakosh range of products.
HUL, a market leader in the FMCG segment had reported a revenue of over Rs 38,000 crore in FY 2018-19 and this is expected to go up further with the merger with GSK Healthcare business.
Ramdev also said that over the next two years, 25 per cent shares of Ruchi Soya will have to be liquidated as per Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) guidelines.
Commenting on the acquisition, Ramdev said the products of Ruchi Soya would not clash with Patanjali's product and add value to the customers.
With Ruchi Soya, it also aims to double its reach in next five years to 50 crore people from the existing 25 crore.

GAIL and ONGC GAIL (India) has cut supplies by about 40% to customers, mainly power and fertiliser companies, after a pipeline rupture led to a fire in an ONGC’s Gujarat plant. GAIL in a statement said “about 30 mmscmd of natural gas supplies into its north-western pipeline network (HVJ system) was immediately shut-off” following the fire. The shares of GAIL and ONGC ended 4% and 3% lower, respectively, yesterday. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said it has been hired as a digital transformation partner by women fashion retail chain Maurices. TCS will help the company build its greenfield IT ecosystem with the intent of optimising its 200 existing applications and software components within the next 17 months. RITES The engineering consultancy company, RITES has bagged a ₹206 crore contract to construct four roads over bridges in Andhra Pradesh from Indian Railways. “RITES Ltd has been awarded a turnkey contract for construction of (ROBs) in replacement of existing level crossings on competition basis from Railway Board amounting to Rs 205.85 crore,” the company said in a statement. The <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> is likely to remain in a sideways zone until fresh buying emerges on blue chips. Overseas cues from Wall Street and Asian markets are muted as well. 
 Nifty futures <keyword id="6368158" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="trading">trading</keyword> in Singapore also indicate a flat start for Friday. 
 
Meanwhile, Foreign investors purchased 575 crore rupees worth of domestic shares in the cash market on Thursday. This is seen as a positive for the market. Private sector banks were the most likely targets of such purchases, delivery data shows. 
 
The market remains on tenterhooks ahead of Sunday's referendum on Greece. Global financial markets are likely to see major volatility if the debt-riddled nation exits the European Union. The Nifty is likely to see a 100-150 point downside if the Greek vote is against more austerity. That fall on the Index should be seen as a buying opportunity.

BHARTI AIRTEL: The mobile services provider is likely to remain in an uptrend after it sold wireless towers in 5 African countries for $1.3 billion. The New Delhi-based company is already trading at 52 week highs on the Nifty. Bharti is in the process of divesting its tower assets in 13 African nations. 
 
LUPIN: Buys Russian pharma company Biocom. The Russian market is among the top 10 pharma spaces globally and Lupin says the purchase is of strategic importance to the Indian pharma giant. 
 
KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK: The Foreign Investment Promotion Board may take a decision today on the bank's application to raise its foreign holding limit to 55 percent from 49 percent. Kotak is already trading at record highs ahead of its bonus adjustment. 
 
NESTLE: Canadian Food Inspection Agency finds no health risk in Nestle's Maggi noodles. This is another positive for the FMCG giant that has been roiled by a global controversy. 
 
RAJESH EXPORTS: Gold ornament exporter is in talks to purchase a firm in Europe at the cost of up to $500 million. 
 
DALMIA CEMENT BHARAT: The cement giant to sell its products in Maharashtra.

At a time when the country’s annual financial budget plan every year results in a hike in prices of tobacco products, thereby drilling a neat hole in chain smokers’ wallet, Chinese cigarette brands have comfortably sneaked into tiny little stalls in almost every metro cities of India, relaxing that heartburn to a great extent. Brands like Baisha, Marboro, Luvin, Golden Elephant and Win would look as premium as Wills and Marlboro, but a pack of cigarettes is way cheaper than what the renowned brands cost. While some of the most popular cigarettes like Gold Flake or Navy Cut cost between Rs 10-12 per piece, the Chinese made cigarettes are priced at Rs 3. At a price almost as cheap as bidi, these brands evade tax and customs duty. 
 
Not only do smokers prefer it, even the retailers are fast filling up the shelves with these as they earn Rs 10 for every 10 Chinese sticks, while the other ones fetch around Rs 4 for 10. In India, where 102 billion cigarettes were smoked in FY 15, illegal brands aren’t something new 
India's share of illicit cigarettes was 19 % in 2014, up from 12 % in 2006, as per Euromonitor International data. Illicit cigarettes have become popular as India boosted excise duty on cigarettes to 40 % in the past two years alone, resulting in a pack costing Rs 30 or more when compared with Indian brands selling for Rs 100 upwards. In addition, amateurs seeking extra income are making and selling cigarettes illegally. 
 
"Unscrupulous operators have set up manufacturing units without compulsory licensing. Cigarettes from these units are available in the market at one rupee per stick, which is even lower than the tax applicable on such cigarettes," said Syed Mahmood Ahmad, director at the Tobacco Institute of India. 
As a result, retail sales of legitimately sold cigarettes dipped 14-15 per cent in the second half of FY15 and 17 per % in the first quarter of this financial year, the steepest decline ever. 
 
"Unprecedented pressure on the legal cigarette industry with imposition of steep taxes has led to consumption being diverted to tax-evaded as well as smuggled products," YC Deveshwar, chairman of ITC, the country's largest cigarette seller, told shareholders in July. 
 
"The wide proliferation of illegal cigarettes has deprived the exchequer of significant revenue, eroded income of Indian farmers and threatened livelihood of many engaged in the supply chain by driving the trade into unscrupulous hands and creating a large unaccounted flow of foreign exchange out of the country," added Deveshwar. 
 
Where taxes are increased at moderate rates, it will "help the legitimate industry to progress and not be taken over by the illegitimate industry," said Sanjiv Puri, president for FMCG at ITC. He added that one in every five cigarettes sold is illegal - those on which no tax is paid, don't comply with graphical health warning norms and where quality may be a concern. 
While Chinese brands with flavours like Green Apple, Strawberry, orange and mint are flooding the market, there are Indonesian brands like Gudang Garam and Djarum Black that are in the market for quite sometime now and are preferred by many. 
 
These cheap imported cigarettes skip law in many ways. While evading tax, these also have no mention of any statutory warnings against smoking. Often smuggled through Myanmar, these brands enter India and reach villages and towns.
