Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been rapidly exiting Indian markets, and this high-speed exodus does not look like it will stop anytime soon. In October 2024, FIIs withdrew Rs 1,14,445.89 crores from Indian markets. Yesterday, FIIs withdrew $770.67 million from the markets, with equity outflows of $440.86 million and debt outflows standing at $327.44 million across various categories. Per NSDL data, hybrid outflows amounted to $2.31 million. While this may sound dissuading at first, a recent SBI report underlined that FIIs still hold a massive $ 18.241 billion in Indian markets. So far, FY25 has seen FII inflows worth $ 8.924 billion. However, the situation may quickly turn alarming as well, given that FII holdings in Indian equities have already come down to a 12-year low. Says Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS, "The current valuation of Indian stocks, trading at around 24 times expected earnings, appears high compared to Chinese stocks, which are at approximately 10 times. Economic concerns, including weak corporate earnings and declining consumer demand, further exacerbate this situation. Additionally, renewed fears of inflation and potential monetary tightening by central banks have led FIIs to withdraw from the Indian market." In the meantime, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) are stepping in big time. During October 2024, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in Indian markets. In November so far, DIIs have been keeping the fund momentum going, infusing Rs 12,265.74 crore in India, while FIIs have offloaded Rs 16,445.49 crore this month. But despite this strong uptick, SBI's recent report suggests that consumer confidence in India remains below 100, signaling muted positivity and optimism in the economy. While household consumption is gradually recovering, it grew at 4% last year, much below the 7% levels recorded pre-pandemic. <h2>FII share in <keyword id="20868945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-listed-companies" source="keywords">NSE-listed companies</keyword> takes a dip, DII stake rise </h2>FIIs share in NSE-listed companies stood at 15.98% in October, with assets under their custody in the equity segment coming to Rs 71.08 lakh crore last month. In September, this stood at Rs 77.96 crore. Experts suggest that this is likely to continue for some time to come. Mutual funds, on the other hand, saw their share in NSE-listed companies hit a record high of 9.58%, as opposed to their 9.32% stake in September 2024. FIIs turned net sellers in the debt segment as well in October, dumping $771 million in Indian markets. This comes after 2 consecutive months of healthy inflows in this segment in August and September 2024, where the figures stood at $2,806 million and $2,295 million, respectively.

FII stake in Indian equities dips to a 12-year low

The <keyword id="19949639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="keywords">rupee</keyword> consolidated in a narrow range and settled for the day on a flat note, higher by 2 paise at 83.50 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, on weak domestic markets and a strong American currency. <keyword id="19950258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex" source="keywords">Forex</keyword> traders said massive <keyword id="20520117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-fund-outflows" source="keywords">foreign fund outflows</keyword> dented investors' sentiments. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit traded in a narrow range. It opened at 83.49, and touched an intraday high of 83.44. The local unit finally settled for the day at 83.50 (provisional), higher by 2 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee stayed range-bound and settled 1 paisa lower at 83.52 against the US dollar. "The Indian rupee traded flat on weak domestic markets and a strong US dollar. The overnight jump in <keyword id="20024983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="keywords">crude oil prices</keyword> also put pressure on the rupee. However, likely dollar inflows supported the rupee earlier in the day," said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was at 105.70, higher by 0.15 per cent, as the US dollar gained on hawkish Fedspeak and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. "We expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias amid strength in the US dollar and selling pressure by foreign investors. However, mixed to positive Asian and European markets may support the rupee at lower levels. "Any intervention by RBI or bond related foreign inflows may support rupee at lower levels. Traders may take cues from weekly unemployment claims data from US and speeches from Fed officials. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 83.30 to Rs 83.75," Choudhary said. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.57 per cent to USD 84.06 per barrel. On the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 1,062.22 points, or 1.45 per cent to close at 72,404.17 points. The broader NSE Nifty settled 345.00 points or 1.55 per cent lower at 21,957.50 points. Rupee settles on flat note, higher by 2 paise at 83.50 against US dollar

<ul><li>FII inflows in May are typically erratic due to several factors impacting the domestic markets like monsoon predictions, <keyword id="6355644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elections" source="Orion">elections</keyword> and so on.</li><li>But this year, <keyword id="432394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fii-flows" source="Orion">FII flows</keyword> in May have been positive and the trend may continue, say analysts.</li><li>Also, FII inflows have remained persistent amid weakness in the US <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">Dollar index</keyword>.</li></ul>Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been on a buying spree so far in May – investing as much as ₹13,278 crore in equities as they turned net buyers on all days of this month. FII inflows in May are usually erratic due to several key factors including monsoon predictions. But this year, the FII flows are on a positive spree and the trend may continue, as per analysts. “Typically, several factors impact FIIs inflows in May every year including prediction of monsoon, if there is election and macro economic situation,” Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research (retail), Kotak Securities told Business Insider. In 2022, FIIs pulled out ₹1.21 lakh crore. The selling continued in the first two months of 2023 before gradually reversing in March and April — with inflows of ₹1,997 crore and ₹5,711 crore respectively. “FIIs are net sellers on a year-to-date basis. However, some recovery was seen in the last one month. FIIs have pulled out the majority of the easy money from the Indian market, which they had pumped in after the Covid-19 crisis in March 2020. They have pulled out $23 billion in FY22/23 out of $37 billion pumped in FY21. Nonetheless, the pace of selling has reduced in the last three months,” said a report by Axis Securities. FII flows are gradually trending higher amid easing macroeconomic situation and hopes of a pause in interest rates cycle soon. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast a normal rainfall this year. Also, FIIs inflows have remained persistent amid weakness in the US Dollar index, which has weakened over 1.5% in the last three months. Rising interest rates make debt funds in developed nations attractive. This is one of the key factors for FIIs pulling out money from Indian markets and allocating it to such countries. Post Covid, the Russia-Ukraine crisis and elevated inflation in the country also impacted inflows. FII money since our markets had become expensive compared to developed markets. And since interest rates went higher and higher in the developed markets, FII money shifted their money in such markets,” said Chouhan. However, the interest rates cycle finally seems to be turning. In the latest US Fed meeting in May, it signaled that the current tightening cycle is at an end, raising expectations for a pause in interest rates soon. “There is hope that the US Fed may cut rates in the coming 1-2 meetings. And it is clear that in the US, the next cycle will be a recession. So, FIIs may not invest there and rather invest in countries where there is growth – like India. And valuation-wise also India has become attractive compared to its position six months back. Also, whenever there is a possibility of a rate cut or the cycle is going to turn, FIIs start shifting their funds from bond to equity,” added Chouhan. Hopes of the US Fed pausing rates sooner also gave a boost to the domestic market that has been highly volatile this year. The Sensex has gained nearly 3% in the last one month alone, crossing the crucial mark of 62,000. It has gained 1.51% so far this year. FII inflows may remain consistent in May with turn in rate cycle

The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> gained 9 paise to 82.31 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday amid a weak dollar and a positive trend in domestic equities. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.36 against the dollar, then climbed to 82.31, registering a rise of 9 paise over its previous close. On Friday, the rupee closed at 82.40 against the US currency. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.11 per cent to 103. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.04 per cent to USD 75.02 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 220.99 points or 0.38 per cent to 57,748.09 points. The broader NSE Nifty gained 76.10 points or 0.45 per cent to 17,021.15 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,720.44 crore, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, India's forex kitty rose USD 12.798 billion to USD 572.801 billion in the week ended March 17. In the previous reporting week, the reserves had dropped USD 2.39 billion to a three-month low of USD 560.003 billion. Rupee rises 9 paise to 82.31/USD in early trade

New Delhi, Mar 8 () Snapping their six-month buying streak, FPIs pulled out a net Rs 13,157 crore from the Indian capital markets in the first five trading sessions of March as the coronavirus outbreak spooked investor sentiment. According to depositories data, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew a net Rs 8,997.46 crore from equities and Rs 4,159.66 crore from the debt segment during March 2-6, taking the total net outflow to Rs 13,157.12 crore. Prior to this, FPIs were net buyers in the Indian capital markets for six consecutive months since September 2019. "The spread of coronavirus in the US is a major driving factor and India is witnessing a spillover effect of what is happening in the global markets. There has been a consistent drain of money from Indian equities as well as the debt where FPIs are fleeing the Indian markets amidst fear of an extended slowdown," said Harsh Jain, co-founder and COO, Groww. The US Fed brought in an emergency rate cut of 50 bps, which shows that the US government is expecting a slowdown, he noted. As per Jain, the current situation in India, seen along with the Yes Bank crisis, is not very encouraging. "In the next 3-4 weeks, the coronavirus behaviour in the western world will dictate the investment behaviour by FPIs in India," Jain said. Echoing the views, Nirali Shah, senior research analyst at Samco Securities, said "The sell-off is certainly the effect of uncertainty caused by rippling effect of coronavirus (COVID-19) in major economies." Going forward, depending on how the US market reacts to coronavirus and slowdown fears, FPIs will react as the US economy will be the cue for these investors for either bringing in fresh investments or withdrawing from India, Shah added. FPIs turn net sellers, pull out Rs 13,157 cr in March so far

New Delhi, Dec 8 () Reversing their buying trend, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) turned net sellers in December with a net outflow of Rs 244 crore from the capital markets amid subdued economic data.
 According to the depositories data, foreign investors pulled out a net sum of Rs 1,668.8 crore from equities. FPIs, however, invested Rs 1,424.6 crore on a net basis in the debt segment, resulting in a total net outflow of Rs 244.2 crore in December so far.
 FPIs had been net buyers for two months to November. They invested Rs 16,037.6 crore in October and Rs 22,871.8 crore in November on a net basis.
 "FPIs adopted a cautious approach while investing in Indian equities, on the back of subdued economic indicators. It has not been a good year for the Indian economy so far and the recently released GDP number which continued the southward march for the seventh quarter in a row falling to 4.5 per cent reaffirmed the slowdown in the Indian economy," said Himanshu Srivastava, senior analyst manager research, Morningstar Investment Adviser India.
 FPIs would continue to be watchful of the domestic environment and tread cautiously, he added.
 Echoing the views, Harsh Jain, co-founder and COO Groww said, "Trump threatening to continue the US-China trade war well past 2020 is definitely making global investors cautious. The repo rate was not reduced, unlike FPIs' expectations. Plus the latest GDP numbers are also responsible for bearish behaviour of FPIs." SRS

FPIs turn net sellers in Indian capital markets in Dec amid weak macro data

<keyword id="46756" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FII">FII</keyword> inflow hit seven-month low in September as foreign investors invested just Rs 5,100 crore in Indian equity markets. 
 
Foreign investors were gross buyers of equities worth Rs 93,493 crore last month, while they sold shares worth Rs 88,391 crore. This is the lowest net investment by foreign investors in equity markets since February 2014 when they had pumped in Rs 1,404 crore. 
 As per market analysts, the government's decision to put off gas price hike and the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>'s order to cancel the allocation of <keyword id="122769" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coal-blocks">coal blocks</keyword> led to the sale of shares. However, they added that foreign investors are still optimistic about the Indian equity market. 
 
Overseas investors (Foreign Institutional Investors, sub-accounts or foreign portfolio investors) continued to bet on the debt market and infused almost Rs 16,000 crore ($2.6 billion) in this segment.

Mumbai: The rupee slipped 1 paisa to an all-time low of 84.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, as persistent <keyword id="20520117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-fund-outflows" source="keywords">foreign fund outflows</keyword> and a muted trend in domestic equities weighed on the local unit. Forex traders said the USDINR pair has shown significant volatility in recent sessions, with the rupee inching closer to its all-time low of 84.40. This downward pressure is largely driven by global factors, particularly the Dollar Index's strengthening. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.40 against the greenback, registering a fall of 1 paisa over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee fell 1 paisa to a new lifetime low of 84.39 against the US dollar. "It appears that the rupee has established support around the current levels, with depreciation limited near 84.50," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further added that the RBI stands tall as the depreciation in the rupee seems to be limited as the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) continues to sell the dollars to protect the sharp depreciation. "For the 5th consecutive week, India's forex reserves declined, possibly due to RBI selling the dollars. Currently, the forex reserves of India stand at USD 682 billion down from the recent all-time high of USD 704 billion," he said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading lower by 0.04 per cent at 105.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.25 per cent to USD 72.07 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex was trading 210.66 points, or 0.27 per cent lower, to 78,464.52 points. The Nifty fell 100.45 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 23,783.00 points. On the macroeconomic front, retail inflation breached the Reserve Bank's upper tolerance level, soaring to a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October mainly on account of rising food prices. China's growth rate is projected to slack further to 4.3% in 2025, down from its present rate of 4.8%. The <keyword id="19916574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="OECD" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="OECD" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="OECD">OECD</keyword> also expects the country's growth to slow down to 4.5% in 2025 Experts believe that the recent economic push by the government, which includes lowering reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 0.5% to 6.6%, lowering mortgage rates, injecting $142 billion into banks, among others, are too little to sustain long-term recovery. Notably, lowering RRR frees up $140 billion for banks to lend, while reducing mortgages and minimum down payments for housing purchases are directed to spur up the Chinese real estate segment. For instance, China's last public holiday of the year, the Golden Week, which ended on October 7 and commemorates the nation's founding, saw 2% less spending per domestic trip, as compared to pre-pandemic levels. "Low tourism spending per head and subdued services prices highlight the still weak domestic demand and continued consumption downgrading in the country,” the analysts at GS noted. <h2>Its all temporary</h2>The <keyword id="21360606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hang-Seng-index" source="keywords">Hang Seng index</keyword>, which is up by 4.22% today, has been seeing a meteoric rise over the past few weeks. Inching up by a little over 24% over the last month, the Chinese markets have been seeing an significant influx of foreign investment, largely at the expense of other emerging markets like India. Foreign investors had offloaded shares worth Rs 27,142 crore between the first and third of this month, after foreign investments reached a staggering record-high of Rs 93,538 crore in September, as per NSDL data. Over the last 10 days, FIIs have constantly been net sellers, while DIIs have been net buyers. As of October 10th, DII (Domestic Institutional Investors) have put in Rs 50,183 crores in Indian markets, almost balancing out Rs 49,305.29 crore withdrawn by foreign investors. But whether this trend of FII inflow in China continues will largely depend on the fundamentals their economy, an area where India has an edge, thanks to strong confidence of domestic investors. Viram Shah, CEO of Vested Finance highlights that while the Hang Seng index's recent 26% surge over the last month has caught investors' attention, and while this bullish trend is expected to continue, driven by low Chinese stock valuations and hopes for economic improvement from government stimulus, there lies a long road ahead. "Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) pulled out $5.4 billion from Indian equities over five consecutive sessions, ending Monday, October 7. While this suggests a possible rotation of funds from India to China, how long this shift will last will depend on the Chinese government’s ability to resolve the structural economic issues. While the market rally is encouraging, more policy steps are needed to boost economic activity and confidence in China", he added.
