Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been rapidly exiting Indian markets, and this high-speed exodus does not look like it will stop anytime soon. In October 2024, FIIs withdrew Rs 1,14,445.89 crores from Indian markets. Yesterday, FIIs withdrew $770.67 million from the markets, with equity outflows of $440.86 million and debt outflows standing at $327.44 million across various categories. Per NSDL data, hybrid outflows amounted to $2.31 million. While this may sound dissuading at first, a recent SBI report underlined that FIIs still hold a massive $ 18.241 billion in Indian markets. So far, FY25 has seen FII inflows worth $ 8.924 billion. However, the situation may quickly turn alarming as well, given that FII holdings in Indian equities have already come down to a 12-year low. Says Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS, "The current valuation of Indian stocks, trading at around 24 times expected earnings, appears high compared to Chinese stocks, which are at approximately 10 times. Economic concerns, including weak corporate earnings and declining consumer demand, further exacerbate this situation. Additionally, renewed fears of inflation and potential monetary tightening by central banks have led FIIs to withdraw from the Indian market." In the meantime, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) are stepping in big time. During October 2024, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in Indian markets. In November so far, DIIs have been keeping the fund momentum going, infusing Rs 12,265.74 crore in India, while FIIs have offloaded Rs 16,445.49 crore this month. But despite this strong uptick, SBI's recent report suggests that consumer confidence in India remains below 100, signaling muted positivity and optimism in the economy. While household consumption is gradually recovering, it grew at 4% last year, much below the 7% levels recorded pre-pandemic. <h2>FII share in <keyword id="20868945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-listed-companies" source="keywords">NSE-listed companies</keyword> takes a dip, DII stake rise </h2>FIIs share in NSE-listed companies stood at 15.98% in October, with assets under their custody in the equity segment coming to Rs 71.08 lakh crore last month. In September, this stood at Rs 77.96 crore. Experts suggest that this is likely to continue for some time to come. Mutual funds, on the other hand, saw their share in NSE-listed companies hit a record high of 9.58%, as opposed to their 9.32% stake in September 2024. FIIs turned net sellers in the debt segment as well in October, dumping $771 million in Indian markets. This comes after 2 consecutive months of healthy inflows in this segment in August and September 2024, where the figures stood at $2,806 million and $2,295 million, respectively.

FII stake in Indian equities dips to a 12-year low

The ongoing <keyword id="20168812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sell-off" source="keywords">sell-off</keyword> by <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">foreign investors</keyword> continues to loom large on <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword>. In October so far, <keyword id="19950996" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="FIIs" source="keywords">FIIs</keyword> (foreign institutional investors) have already withdrawn Rs 74,732.20 crores. Not for a single day this month have FIIs poured money into <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>. The sell-off started on October 1, when foreign investors withdrew Rs 5,579.35 crore. The highest withdrawal of this month came on October 3. 2024, when FIIs sold Rs 15,243.27 crore worth of assets. Yesterday, i.e. on October 17th, FIIs pulled out Rs 7,421.40 crore from the markets. Experts state that FIIs are continuously putting pressure on Indian stocks, but the situation is expected to improve in the coming weeks with a sharp recovery anticipated. "We remain optimistic as the FII selling may have crossed the half way mark already and as it tones down, the domestic flows will help a recovery. When the recovery happens it will sharp and concentrated, giving long term investors motivation to stay put during the harrowing volatility of a roller coaster market that has repeatedly tested support levels but remains oversold, hence ripe for a bounce sometime in the next few weeks" said Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert to ANI. Between January and October 2024, foreign investors have invested a net of 1,87,298 crore in India. This year, apart from the current sell-off, January, April and May also saw <keyword id="23593694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-outflows" source="keywords">investment outflows</keyword> by FIIs. The intense selloff comes right after September, when foreign investors invested a record Rs 93,538 crore in the Indian markets. June, July and August 2024 had also seen positive inflows from foreign investors of about Rs 41,757 crore, Rs 48,796 crore and Rs 25,493 crore respectively. However, a resilient, strong domestic investor base is keeping Indian markets afloat. <keyword id="21714171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DIIs" source="keywords">DIIs</keyword> (domestic institutional investors) have been consistent buyers throughout this month, largely balancing the outflows prompted by FIIs. In October so far, DIIs have invested about Rs 68,961.37 crore in the market, with the highest monthly inflow coming in on October 7th. While DIIs invested Rs 13,245.12 crore in Indian markets on that day, foreign investors withdrew Rs 8,293.41 crore. Yesterday i.e. on October 17, 2024, DIIs invested Rs 4,979.83 crore in the markets. At present, experts note that DIIs are flush with cash at the moment, with <keyword id="20052797" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-inflows" source="keywords">mutual fund inflows</keyword> reaching an all-time high of Rs 24,509 crore in September 2024, a record 52.78% jump from the corresponding year ago period, where they stood at Rs 16,042 crore. Generally, keeping around 3-5% of their assets in cash is considered an acceptable practice amongst mutual fund houses. As per reports, mutual funds are currently in possession of Rs 1.86 lakh crore worth of cash, which constitutes 5.03% of their total AUM as of September 2024.

Exodus of foreign investors from Indian markets continues unabated in October. But DIIs are holding the fort steady

Mumbai: The rupee slipped 1 paisa to an all-time low of 84.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, as persistent <keyword id="20520117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-fund-outflows" source="keywords">foreign fund outflows</keyword> and a muted trend in domestic equities weighed on the local unit. Forex traders said the USDINR pair has shown significant volatility in recent sessions, with the rupee inching closer to its all-time low of 84.40. This downward pressure is largely driven by global factors, particularly the Dollar Index's strengthening. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.40 against the greenback, registering a fall of 1 paisa over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee fell 1 paisa to a new lifetime low of 84.39 against the US dollar. "It appears that the rupee has established support around the current levels, with depreciation limited near 84.50," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further added that the RBI stands tall as the depreciation in the rupee seems to be limited as the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) continues to sell the dollars to protect the sharp depreciation. "For the 5th consecutive week, India's forex reserves declined, possibly due to RBI selling the dollars. Currently, the forex reserves of India stand at USD 682 billion down from the recent all-time high of USD 704 billion," he said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading lower by 0.04 per cent at 105.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.25 per cent to USD 72.07 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex was trading 210.66 points, or 0.27 per cent lower, to 78,464.52 points. The Nifty fell 100.45 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 23,783.00 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,024.31 crore, according to exchange data. On the macroeconomic front, retail inflation breached the Reserve Bank's upper tolerance level, soaring to a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October mainly on account of rising food prices. Inflation based on the consumer price index (CPI) was 5.49 per cent in September and 4.87 per cent in the year-ago month. India's industrial production expanded by 3.1 per cent in September after recording a contraction in the preceding month, as all three major segments -- mining, manufacturing, and power generation -- showed improvement. However, the growth in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) during the month was lower than 6.4 per cent registered in September 2023.

In early Wednesday trading, the Indian rupee slid 14 paise to hit an all-time low of 84.23 per US dollar, weighed down by continued outflows of foreign funds and a robust US dollar in global markets. Forex analysts highlighted the volatility stemming from the ongoing US elections, suggesting that stability could return once results are clear in this close race. The US Federal Reserve is also on the radar, with an anticipated interest rate cut this week and a projected easing of up to 100 basis points by 2025. At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened at its historic low of 84.23 against the dollar, down from its previous close of 84.09. On Tuesday, the currency had ended slightly stronger, gaining 2 paise. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which tracks the strength of the US dollar against six major currencies, climbed 1.64% to 105.11. According to Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors, the index rose following initial election results showing former President Trump ahead, with the Republican party also leading in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The global oil market saw movement as Brent crude prices dipped 0.98%, trading at USD 74.79 per barrel. Bhansali noted that the rupee’s trajectory will heavily depend on the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) response, particularly as the currency fluctuates with real-time election outcomes. He estimated an intra-day trading range between 84.00 and 84.35. On the domestic front, Indian stock markets showed positive trends. The Sensex climbed by 390.93 points (0.49%) to reach 79,867.56, while the Nifty rose by 135.60 points (0.56%) to 24,348.90. Despite these gains, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers on Tuesday, pulling out Rs 2,569.41 crore from the capital markets, as per stock exchange data. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit traded in a narrow range. It opened at 83.49, and touched an intraday high of 83.44. The local unit finally settled for the day at 83.50 (provisional), higher by 2 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee stayed range-bound and settled 1 paisa lower at 83.52 against the US dollar. "The Indian rupee traded flat on weak domestic markets and a strong US dollar. The overnight jump in <keyword id="20024983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="keywords">crude oil prices</keyword> also put pressure on the rupee. However, likely dollar inflows supported the rupee earlier in the day," said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was at 105.70, higher by 0.15 per cent, as the US dollar gained on hawkish Fedspeak and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. "We expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias amid strength in the US dollar and selling pressure by foreign investors. However, mixed to positive Asian and European markets may support the rupee at lower levels. "Any intervention by RBI or bond related foreign inflows may support rupee at lower levels. Traders may take cues from weekly unemployment claims data from US and speeches from Fed officials. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 83.30 to Rs 83.75," Choudhary said. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.57 per cent to USD 84.06 per barrel. On the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 1,062.22 points, or 1.45 per cent to close at 72,404.17 points. The broader NSE Nifty settled 345.00 points or 1.55 per cent lower at 21,957.50 points. Rupee settles on flat note, higher by 2 paise at 83.50 against US dollar

Bloodbath on the D-Street entered its fifth straight day today, with <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> dipping by 218 points to close the day at 24,180.80, much below the 25,000-mark. <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> also dropped a massive 662 points to close the week at 79,402.29 points. Notably, this was the worst weekly run experienced by the markets over the last 14 months. Clearly, the markets are not in the mood to embrace the impending festivities. Only 12 out of 50 stocks on the Nifty50 advanced today, while the other 38 declined. It was no different on the BSE, where an astounding 3,101 stocks slipped during the day, while just 841 inched up. Smallcaps bore the biggest brunt of this drawdown, with the smallcap 100, 50, 250, and microcaps each sliding by over 2% during the day. Amidst sectors, media, metal, PSU banks, consumer durables, and oil and gas skidded over 2% each today. "Markets continued its downward trajectory as a broader selloff pulled down key benchmarks with Sensex ending below the crucial 80k mark. FPI flows are expected to remain volatile in the days to come". "Indian equity markets corrected sharply this week as FII continued with selling in Indian markets. Benchmark indices (Nifty 50 and Sensex 30) declined between 2-3% this week. The midcap and the <keyword id="20187540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smallcap-stocks" source="keywords">smallcap stocks</keyword> witnessed selling pressure. As a result, the BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices underperformed the larger peers and were down between 5-8% on a weekly basis. On Friday, the rupee settled 1 paisa higher at 83.72 against the US dollar in a range-bound trade. "We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias on risk aversion in the global markets. Escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and outflows by foreign investors may further pressurise the domestic unit," said Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. However, a weak US dollar and declining crude oil prices may support the rupee at lower levels. Any intervention by the Reserve Bank may also benefit the rupee, Choudhary added. Traders may take cues from US ISM services PMI data. Investors may watch out for the <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>'s monetary policy decision this week. USD/INR spot price is likely to trade in a range of Rs 83.60 to Rs 84.20, Choudhary said. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 2,222.55 points, or 2.74 per cent, to settle at 78,759.40 points, and Nifty dropped 662.10 points, or 2.68 per cent, to 24,055.60 points. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, dropped 0.65 per cent to 102.54. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 1.91 per cent to USD 75.34 per barrel. Rupee tumbles 31 paise to close at all-time low of 84.03 against US dollar

New Delhi, Investors' wealth surged Rs 3.29 lakh crore on Wednesday, driven by a robust rally in the equity markets. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 742.06 points or 1.14 per cent to settle at 65,675.93. During the day, it zoomed 813.78 points or 1.25 per cent to 65,747.65. The market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms rallied Rs 3,29,520.27 crore to reach Rs 3,25,40,108.97 crore. "The market's strong gap-up jump in response to positive global cues on account of the softer than anticipated US and UK inflation data highlights the optimism for an end to the interest rate cycle, as evidenced by the ease in bond yields. "This is likely to draw FII flows into emerging markets, which is good for India considering the current better earnings season and the festive demand pick-up. The drop in the CPI for India also improved the mood," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. Among the Sensex firms, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, Infosys, Wipro, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, Reliance Industries and Axis Bank were the major gainers. In contrast, <keyword id="111876" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bajaj-finance" source="Orion">Bajaj Finance</keyword>, IndusInd Bank and Power Grid were the laggards. In the broader market, the BSE smallcap gauge jumped 1.13 per cent, and the midcap index climbed 0.91 per cent. Titan, Asian Paints, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and Hindustan Unilever were among the biggest gainers. US markets ended on a mixed note on Thursday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 3,033 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data. "In the near-term the market is likely to be range bound since there are no major triggers till the budget," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. Global oil benchmark Brent crude declined o.41 per cent to USD 82.41 a barrel. The BSE benchmark jumped 538.89 points or 0.70 to hit its lifetime peak of 77,145.46 on Thursday. It later ended at a fresh record high at 76,810.90; up 204.33 points or 0.27 per cent. The Nifty rallied 75.95 points or 0.33 per cent to settle at a new closing high of 23,398.90. During the day, the benchmark climbed 158.1 points or 0.67 per cent to its record peak of 23,481.05. Markets decline in early trade after record rally

The foreign portfolio investors have infused Rs 15,420 crore so far this week in the Indian <keyword id="19911354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-market" source="keywords">equity market</keyword>, according to the data from the <keyword id="20294652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Securities-Depository" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Securities Depository" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Securities Depository">National Securities Depository</keyword>. The net investment by the foreign portfolio investors (<keyword id="19979726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPI" source="keywords">FPI</keyword>) surged to Rs 30,772 crore so far in July indicating the good buying by the <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">foreign investors</keyword> in the <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword>. The foreign investors have so far bought equities worth of Rs 1,30,138 crore this year. "FPI flows are expected to remain volatile this week. The markets were strong, led by strong earnings and commentary from the large-cap. This week, the markets of India, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and South Korea witnessed inflows, while the markets of Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam witnessed outflows" said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research, Kotak Securities. Internationally the foreign investors this week have injected around $585 million in Brazil, $300 million in Indonesia, $324 million in Malaysia and $2,085 million in South Korea. On the other hand, Taiwan witnessed an outflow of $5325 million and Vietnam witnessed a selling of $278 million of foreign investment this week. According to market experts, foreign investors are investing in Indian markets amid a weakening in <keyword id="22484170" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-and-bond-yields" source="keywords">dollar and bond yields</keyword>, and if this trend continues, foreign investment will continue as well. "During the fortnight ending 15th July, FPIs were buyers in autos, capital goods, healthcare, IT, telecom, and oil and gas. A notable trend was the lack of buying in <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword>, which partly explains the poor performance of financial services in July so far. If the recent trend of weakness in dollar and bond yields persists, FPIs are likely to continue their buying in the market," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, at Geojit Financial Services. Foreign Institutional investors were sellers in January, April, and May, cumulatively selling equities worth around Rs 60,000 crores. However, they were buyers in February, March, and June, with cumulative purchases amounting to Rs 63,200 crores.

Markets snap 3-day winning run; Sensex slips over 100 pts on foreign fund outflows

The <keyword id="19949639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rupee" source="keywords">rupee</keyword> was trading in a narrow range against the <keyword id="19949640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-dollar" source="keywords">US dollar</keyword> in early trade on Friday, as the support from positive domestic equities was negated by elevated <keyword id="20024983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="keywords">crude oil prices</keyword>. <keyword id="20024982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex-traders" source="keywords">Forex traders</keyword> said the strength of the American currency in the overseas market and significant <keyword id="20520117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-fund-outflows" source="keywords">foreign fund outflows</keyword> dented investors' sentiments. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.48, it touched 83.46 in the initial trade, registering a gain of 2 paise from its previous close. On Thursday, the rupee closed at 83.48 against the American currency. "The Indian Rupee was again sold-off on Thursday as FPIs outflows continued to trigger demand for the US dollar, while probable RBI selling at 83.50 did not allow a higher up move on the USD/INR pair. On Friday also the same is expected from the USD/INR pair with RBI continuing its control at 83.50," said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was at 105.30, higher by 0.07 per cent. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.55 per cent to USD 84.34 per barrel. On the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 169.82 points, or 0.23 per cent higher at 72,573.99 points. The broader NSE Nifty was up 67.05 points, or 0.31 per cent, to 22,024.55 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 6,994.86 crore, according to exchange data. "FPIs offloaded Rs 22,858 crore in six market sessions in May 2024, while DIIs (Domestic Institutional Investors) were buyers to the tune of Rs 16,700 crore. Uncertainty in election results and higher US treasury yields were the main causes of this sell-off," Bhansali added.
