The growth in TV largely came from Non Prime Time viewership. </li></ul>In the first week of COVID-19 disruption, a report by BARC India and Nielsen on TV and Smartphone consumption revealed that advertising Free Commercial Times (FCT) increased by 13%. Social advertisements, banking and financial investments, and Food and beverages were the highest contributors. The report was presented by Sunil Lulla, CEO, BARC India and Dolly Jha, Country Leader, Nielsen Global Media, South Asia on a video conferencing platform called Zoom. On March 24, 2020, with the Prime Minister announcing a total lockdown in the country, people are slowly coming to terms with the new normal. It started with many states enforcing the lock-down, partially and fully, and many places of work enforcing work from home (WFH). Faced with the predicament of not being able to move out of their homes, people are creating new ways of spending time productively. The report further revealed how PM Modi’s address on ‘Complete Lockdown’ was the biggest news event ever as it garnered 197 million viewership on television, higher than IPL finals which was 133 million. With corporate India getting into Work from Home mode, we are seeing NCCS A showing an 11% increase in viewership. Even on smartphone usage, the increase in driven NCCS A (+7.7%) and 35-44 year olds (+10.7%).</li><li> People staying at home means watching TV throughout the day and hence the growth in TV viewing is coming during Non-Prime Time slots (8am – 5 pm).</li><li>The need for continuous updates expectedly has led to a huge increase in news consumption on Television (57% increase in Impressions), while spending more time as a family together could be leading to the Movies genre and the Kids genre also showing significant increases. </li><li>This behaviour is seen in digital consumption as well with News and Gaming showing huge increases. News apps saw 8% more users per week with an increase of 17% in time spent/user/week. This growth was led by non-English News apps (+87%). Gaming apps saw an increase of 2% in users/week and with a 11% increase in time spent/user/week.</li><li>With a lot of uncertainty around what is happening, people have increased their time spent on Chatting (+23%) and Social Networking (+25%) apps. Advertising FCT increased by 13% in Week 1 of COVID-19 disruption: BARC-Nielsen Report

<ul><li>Prime time shows have over 60% of ‘co-viewing instances’ with families watching TV together. </li><li>TV in India has an unparalleled position as a family entertainment platform, both in terms of price as well as reach, said a <keyword id="45949" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jm-financial" source="Orion">JM Financial</keyword> report. </li><li>Growth in <keyword id="1245953" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott" source="Orion">OTT</keyword> has expanded the overall video consumption, and has not come at the expense of <keyword id="1632453" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="linear-tv" source="Orion">linear TV</keyword>. </li><li>Urban youth with access to wired broadband and proclivity to watch international content are likely to shift exclusively to <keyword id="5293670" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott-platforms" source="Orion">OTT platforms</keyword>, the report said. </li><li>Low cost of pay TV and low wired broadband penetration can work against cord-cutting, the report said. </li></ul>For families across India, prime time is mostly spent in front of their television sets. According to JM Financial, prime time shows have over 60% of ‘co-viewing instances’ – and this is what will keep TVs running in India in spite of the proliferation of OTT, as per the report. In addition to the fact that 98% of Indian homes only have a single TV, low proliferation of wired broadband is also keeping people from making the total shift exclusively to OTT. While India has over 650 million mobile broadband users, it has only 18 million wired broadband connections. “Note, these 18 million connections include small and medium enterprises as well, leaving even lower connections for households. We believe these trends and facts suggest TV screens - and linear TV - will remain the mainstay of India’s family entertainment,” said the report named ‘In the eye of the storm’. It also said that growth in OTT has expanded the overall video consumption, and has not come at the expense of linear TV. Pay TV vs OTT vs Free Dish The cost of pay TV – that’s subscription-based TV viewing – is around $3 per month. In comparison, OTT subscription cost is at least 2.5 times that of pay TV. “TV in India has an unparalleled position as a family entertainment platform, both in terms of price as well as reach,” the report said. In the US, however, where subscribers are shifting away from pay TV to OTT – it’s the exact opposite. While pay TV is at around $100 a month, Netflix subscription plans start at $10 per month. Added to that, wired broadband penetration in the US is at 95%. In spite of the fundamentals that support the long-term prospects of linear TV, it is being hurt by many factors. The usual suspect is OTT, which has been chipping away the top-of-the-pyramid user base off pay TV, who are the best spenders. This is reflected in the 6% decline in pay TV subscribers between 2019 to 2021. During the same period, broadcasters’ subscription revenue declined by 13% and ad revenue too went down by 12% – hurt by lowered FMCG ad spends and pandemic-led troubles. FMCG contributes to 50% of TV ad spends. On the other end of the spectrum, the government's DD Free Dish, a free-to-air <keyword id="6411255" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dth" source="Orion">DTH</keyword>, too has pulled away millions of subscribers. Against cord-cutting The JM Financial report, however, believes that there is reason to be sanguine. “TV screen’s dominance during prime time coupled with pay-TV’s low ARPU and wired broadband’s lower penetration in India work against cord-cutting,” the report said. Broadcasters have been withdrawing General Entertainment Channels or GECs from DD Free Dish. That could stem the migration of viewers from pay TV. Moreover, it also expects that receding raw material cost inflation and buoyant festive demand could boost ad-revenue growth starting in the second half of the current financial year. “Unlike the general perception, our analysis indicates TV has held on to its share of ad spend while digital has gained at the expense of other media. TV’s wider reach and India’s low ad-spend-to-GDP ratio mean significant headroom for both TV and digital ad-spend to grow,” the report said. Moreover, India still has close to 100 million non-TV households, which provides a long runway for growth. Where are ad volumes going? Ad volumes have been falling differently across channel genres. Free commercial time (FCT) in genres such as English movies and English niche fell sharply even over 2019-21— reflecting the impact of OTT on select genres. Hindi GECs attain an all-time-high viewership of 4 billion; grows by 26%: BARC & Nielsen Media

<ul><li>The Covid-19 disruption in Week 2 continued to show a huge increase in <keyword id="659577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TV-viewership">TV viewership</keyword>, smartphone usership &amp; VOD consumption according to BARC-Nielsen’s insight series titled, <keyword id="8996906" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="crisis-consumption">Crisis Consumption</keyword>.</li><li>The current week garnered the highest ever total TV consumption.</li><li>The re-telecast of <keyword id="6373819" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ramayan">Ramayan</keyword> garnered the highest-ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015.</li></ul> The second week of the national lockdown in wake of the COVID-19 outbreak witnessed the highest-ever TV viewing at 1.20 trillion minutes as average daily viewers grew by 62 million. Also, the time spent on smartphones in Week 2 of the COVID-19 disruption increased by almost 3 hours per week. The findings were a part of the second edition of BARC-Nielsen’s insight series titled, Crisis Consumption. The report further revealed that around 62 million viewers across the country watched television for 4 hours and 40 minutes daily. The average daily reach saw an 11% growth. The total TV consumption across the country witnessed a 37% growth and the viewership grew significantly in the 3 days post the lockdown. Moreover, non-primetime viewership further increased in Week 12 and saw over 70% surge. News and movies witnessed an all–time high growth. GECs saw a 32% surge during non-prime time. Considering viewership of news has gone up substantially as consumers want to stay updated about the evolving situation, the share of news to total TV grew from 7% to 21% Moreover, the kids segment saw maximum viewership in the morning between 10 am and 12 noon. Average Daily FCT in Week 11-12 grew by 6 lakh seconds, which was a growth of 15%. In terms of secotr-wise FCT, food &amp; beverages saw the maximum increase in FCT share percentage followed by personal care and hygiene. Moreover, the return of classic shows like Ramayana led to the evening slot on Sunday recording all time high numbers. The lockdown also resulted in a lot of firsts in the TV viewing history. While news &amp; movies recorded an all-time high growth in viewership, Hindi movies surpassed Hindi GEC in viewership. Also highest viewership was recorded in HSM for any show in Hindi GEC (Fiction/Non-Fiction). Not surprisingly, social distancing also led to a spike in virtual social connectivity. Meanwhile, consumers spent 45% more time on news apps and the news franchise on smartphones grew by 25%. Time spend on video streaming apps grew by 11%.

<ul><li><keyword id="2801660" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BARC-India">BARC India</keyword> released the second edition of its What India Watched report for 2019 which revealed that 2019 generated 48.4 trillion television viewing minutes and 1.59 billion seconds of advertising.</li><li>Despite the rollout of <keyword id="1711202" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTO">NTO</keyword>, each household watched 5 hours, 11 minutes of television every day in 2019.</li><li>Regional channels, sports and the news genre reported a steady growth.</li><li>While TV ad volumes saw a 3.6% drop, share of top 10 advertisers reported growth.</li></ul>The <keyword id="397085" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Broadcast-Audience-Research-Council">Broadcast Audience Research Council</keyword> (BARC) India revealed that 2019 generated 48.4 trillion television viewing minutes and 1.59 billion seconds of advertising. While Ad FCT at 1.6 billion seconds fell by 3.6% (over 2018), the share of Top 10 advertisers grew by 3.8%. The findings were a part of the second edition of BARC’s What India Watched report under which it measured 634 channels.Viewership has seen a 38% growth over the last four years. Each household watches 5 hours, 11 minutes of television every day and as many as 222 million individuals tune in to primetime television at any given minute. The report also found that despite the rollout of a new tariff order (NTO), <keyword id="659577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TV-viewership">TV viewership</keyword> registered a growth in 2019. GEC and movies continued to account for 3/4th of TV viewership. This growth in viewership has given an impetus to regional language markets. Share of viewership of channels other than Hindi and the 4 South languages have risen steadily, from 15% in 2016 to 23% in 2019. Viewership of most regional language channels have doubled in the same period. English Language channels have seen a decline in viewership - one reason is that sports content - which was traditionally broadcast largely in English - is increasingly available in Hindi and regional languages. Here, viewership for Hindi language channels have grown by 31% in the last 4 years and contributed to 44% of total TV viewership in 2019 Growth of the news genre 2019 saw a 23% growth in viewing minutes for News Channels over the previous year, with the genre accounting for 8.9% of total television viewing - its highest share over the last four years. 2019 was the year of General Elections, as well as polls to elect 7 State Assemblies. Earlier in the year, there was extensive news coverage of the Pulwama Terror Attack and the aftermath of that, including the Balakot Air Strike, and capture and release of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. Later in the year, the triple talaq debate and the abrogation of Article 370 dominated headlines. Beyond political affairs, there were several other developments that drove news viewership in 2019 - severe rains and floods in many parts of the country, Chandrayaan-2, the Ardh Kumbh Mela and ICC World Cup Cricket. These ensured high viewer interest through the year, across the country. The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections and the run-up to government formation, Supreme Court decision on Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute and the controversy around Citizenship Amendment Act also led to successive viewership peaks for the news genre. Impact of NTO On February 1 2019, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)'s New Tariff Order (NTO) for Broadcasting and Cable Services came into force. The report revealed that the NTO led to a drop in percentage of households that watched 30 channels or more on an average per week, while share of homes that watched 20 channels or less increased. Growth of sports channels In 2019, sports channels saw a growth of 17% (viewing minutes) over 2018. The genre contributed to 3.2% of total TV viewership in 2019 - which was the highest over the last 4 years. Beyond cricket, the most watched sports on TV are Kabaddi, Wrestling and Football. Together, they corner 85% of viewing minutes of non-cricket events. Moreover, in 2019, about 424 million viewers (which is 51% of the total TV viewing population) watched live matches of IPL-12. BARC India's Out of Home Measurement showed that an additional 9% watched the tournament in restaurants, pubs and other such ‘Out of Home’ locations. Urban vs Rural BARC India's BI-2018 Survey estimated that 44% individuals with access to TV live in Urban areas, while 56% are in Rural India. This is an outcome of higher TV penetration in Urban areas, given that television ownership is linked largely to economic status (among other factors like availability of power, cable TV distribution etc.). The Urban and Rural viewer profile has some key differences, which influence the respective character of TV consumption: While Rural India accounts for a higher viewership share than Urban India for GEC and Movies genre, the picture is reversed for the kids genre. In News, the viewership contribution is split evenly between Urban and Rural. Advertising on TV Over the last 4 years, the volume of advertising on TV (FCT) has grown by 21%. In 2019, 11,525 Advertisers ran 76.8 million ads across 634 measured channels that reached out to 197 million homes across India. All leading products and services use TV's huge reach to connect with their target consumers. Of these, FMCG occupies the top slot, accounting for 54% of ad duration in 2019. FMCG and e-Commerce were the two segments that increased their ad volumes on TV in 2019 over the previous year. In terms of genre share in advertising, GEC, Movies and News account for the largest share of Ad volumes (78% in 2019).

<ul><li><keyword id="9734" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Radio-Mirchi">Radio Mirchi</keyword>, that rebranded itself in late 2020, has now announced that it is expanding its presence to three international markets. </li><li>We reached out to Prashant Panday, MD and CEO, ENIL to understand what the platform has in store. </li></ul>Around the end of 2020, <keyword id="394582" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Entertainment-Network-India">Entertainment Network India</keyword> Ltd (ENIL) announced that it is rebranding Radio Mirchi to Mirchi, with the aim of depicting the evolution that the brand had gone through in the last few years. Less than four months later, Mirchi is now spreading its wings wider and expanding to three key markets in the Middle East - Dubai, Qatar, and Bahrain. Mirchi has already had some experience in two of these markets and the organization’s goal is to become not just the listener’s favorite there but the advertisers’ favorite too. We caught up with Prashant Panday, MD and CEO, ENIL, who will be spearheading Mirchi’s international foray and tried to understand all that he has planned for these three exciting markets. Excerpts: Q. You are entering 3 major MENA markets in the next few months. How different are your strategies going to be for these 3 markets? The MENA markets are very rich. Almost everyone there has a car, and we know that radio listenership is the highest in cars. Each of these three markets has a high population of South Asians. In two of them, Mirchi has existed in the past, and very successfully at that. In that sense, there is an already existent listenership craving for Mirchi. From an advertising angle, most of these markets are at present mostly radio-FCT/radio-innovation markets. That being said, it will be our endeavor to offer the whole line of our “Solutions” products that we offer to the advertisers in India. I think advertisers love solutions and there is no reason why the MENA advertisers won’t! Q. Why were these three markets in the MENA region your choice? Any expansion in the radio space has to depend on availability of frequencies. It so happens that we got frequencies in these markets and hence, are launching here first. In the UAE, we are partnering with a committed and well-entrenched, existing radio player – Suno FM – and entering the market by rebranding it to Radio Mirchi. In Qatar, we have partnered with another committed local player – One FM – and launched MirchiOne. In Bahrain, we won the frequency through the Government auction that happened before the pandemic began. Here, we are launching our own operation. Q. What will your content strategy look like for these three markets? Will it be primarily aimed at the Indian diaspora there or will it have a local play too? In MENA, and even in other international markets, we look at the larger South Asian population as our target audience. From a language and culture perspective, and from an entertainment and music consumption perspective, there are lot of similarities between Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalese and even Bangladeshis. Sri Lankans also love Indian music, so they are also within our sight. In all of these markets, the promise of Mirchi is that, being India’s biggest FM broadcaster, we will bring the best in entertainment and music. Our deep connects with the film and music fraternity ensures that we have access to Bollywood content on tap, including access to the top celebrities. The MENA region is of great important to the film and music industry, and so our partnership with them in MENA will be a strong one. Apart from this, we will be happy to bring the news from South Asia to our listeners, and arouse memories of “back home” in them! Having said all this, the core of any radio product is always local in nature. So the bulk of the content will be local in nature. Local issues, traffic, weather, festivals, shopping etc. will form the mainstay of the product. Q. You were present in Dubai till last year. What made you pull out of the country, and how different will your offering there be now? Our agreement with our erstwhile partners concluded. We, therefore, withdrew the brand from the market. Now, after 9 months, we are entering the country again! There is going to be a huge difference in the content as well as its treatment this time around. Last time, our entire programming team was based in Abu Dhabi, and so the content was created primarily for that emirate. Of course our signals covered Dubai as well. This time, our content will be tailor made for Dubai. It will be far more local and relevant for people of Dubai. Of course, the signals will travel to Abu Dhabi and to other emirates as well. Furthermore, our local research indicates that people are yearning for many of our popular“sparklers” like “Murga”, “What the Farhan” and “Sud”. We will therefore be re-launching them soon. Then there are so many other strong programming IPs that we will bring to the UAE. The music will largely be contemporary, and will be wider than what we play in India. There will also be shows that we will carry from India to all MENA markets. Very importantly, and this is different from our earlier presence, we will be bringing a lot more Hindi films to Dubai for their promotion. This will offer us great opportunity for local content, and for our listeners to engage with film and music celebrities, in person. Q. What are your launch plans? What media are you going to use to talk to audiences in these markets? In the UAE, we have extensive launch activities planned. We are doing extensive digital campaigns, but most importantly, we are also launching an aggressive print campaign. In the other markets, the biggest medium really is radio itself, and with the word of mouth that already exists, our effort will be to tap the audience through digital platforms, contests and on-ground activations. Q. What kind of advertiser response have you seen in these markets? In Qatar, we have had a huge response to our product! In fact, we’ve got sponsorship orders prior to our launch. From the start we’ve got, it looks like we’re on track to achieving our annual target. The UAE is a far more competitive market, so we want to launch our product first, and then approach advertisers. We know that the response will be terrific! In Bahrain, the launch is a month away; but we are already getting feelers from advertisers there! Equally, there is a lot of interest in India based advertisers, all of whom target the Middle East. We are now going to encourage them to “Add Dubai and Doha and Bahrain to your plans just as you add Delhi and Mumbai”. For the first time, we are in a position to offer India-based advertisers a ‘network’ in the Middle East. Q. What are your expectations from Qatar and Bahrain given that they are new markets for Mirchi? We’re not entirely new to Bahrain! We were already present there as a brand till some time back; but in a partnership with a local player. So it’s a re-launch there! In Qatar, however, we are new. In both these markets, there is a huge entertainment gap and we will endeavor to fill that. We will offer not just our radio product, but also our video and on-ground LIVE entertainment products. Qatar is going to host the football world cup in 2022, and that’s going to create a huge amount of travel from India. The buzz around football is usually so high that the whole advertising ecosystem gets a big boost. We hope to capitalize on that as well. In Bahrain, we have a 5-year contract from the Kingdom of Bahrain. We will therefore, need to be very efficient in our operations. Fortunately, we have a strong leadership team in ENIL, and many of our key managers are getting a good opportunity to prove themselves in these exciting markets! Q. You rebranded around 6 months back. How has the reception been so far, both from listeners and advertisers? We are doing exceptionally well in our Solutions business, despite our radio business being hit by COVID-19. Our Digital solutions are especially doing very well. Thanks to the pandemic, digital products have got a big leg up and we’ve benefitted from that. The other solutions product that has done very well is the TV solutions. I am so proud to share with you that despite the pandemic and despite no other award shows happening in this quarter, the Mirchi Music Awards happened in as pompous a style as always! It was broadcasted on 28th March, on Colors. We have also successfully completed the Mirchi Music Awards in Marathi, Tamil, Telegu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bangla. Likewise we have successfully completed the Mirchi Cover Star, the music talenthunt competition. The winner of the Mirchi Cover Star got to perform on TV during the Mirchi Music Awards. Except for TV solutions, the rest of our on-ground solutions (Live solutions) got almost completely derailed because of COVID. However, even within this space, we innovated and created new products like online R&amp;R (Rewards and Recognition) events and online concerts for our corporate clients. Q. What more can we expect from Mirchi in the next few months? You can expect a lot of action on the digital side. We will soon be revamping our website and making a big push there. We will also be expanding our online radio stations. Our YouTube channels are growing rapidly; and with more content that we will make, we hope to expand that substantially too. We have big plans in our Original Content space– web series and individual sketches. We are also looking at making a play in the podcast space, on the platform side in addition to the content side. In addition to this, we are also evaluating new business opportunities beyond what we have already entered, opportunities that mix the power of digital technology with our content/film relationship strengths. In the next few years, we expect our solutions business (digital, TV, Live) to grow rapidly. During this time, we also expect radio to do a recovery, with growth rates stabilizing in the high single digits. Q. In India, what will your growth strategy be in the next year? Where will your next phase of growth come from? Our 5-year strategy is built on growing our solutions business rapidly, and also stabilizing our radio business. In the next few years, I expect both to grow. However, with solutions growing faster, the share of solutions could become about 50%. Our solutions business has been generating high operating margins; so that should boost our EBITDA too. I expect FY22 to remain tough, given the COVID conditions. That being said, I expect strong growth prospects from FY23 onwards.

The mobile advertising firm <keyword id="164941" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="inMobi">InMobi</keyword>, which is backed by SoftBank, will have to pay $950,000 in civil penalties and implement a comprehensive privacy program so that it can settle the case that federal trade commission has put up against it. As per FCT, it deceptively tracked locations of "hundreds of millions of consumers - including children - without their knowledge or consent" so that it could serve geo-targeted advertising. 
 
As per <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/inmobi-to-pay-950000-fine-to-settle-ftc-charges-for-tracking-location-of-consumers-without-consent/articleshow/52878938.cms">ETtech</a>, a statement by FTC noted that as per the settlement, InMobi is subject to a $4 million penalty; however, the agency suspended the fine to $950,000 because of its financial condition. 
 
As per the complaint, InMobi was tracking consumers' location without asking for their consent and even when consumers had actually denied it the permission. 
 
"InMobi created a database built on information collected from consumers who allowed the company access to their geo-location information, combining that data with the wireless networks they were near to document the physical location of wireless networks themselves. InMobi then would use that database to infer the physical location of consumers based on the networks they were near, even when consumers had turned off location collection on their device." FTC said in a statement. 
 
The agency added that InMobi's software also tracked location in thousands of apps "that were clearly directed at children, in spite of promising that it did not do so". While doing this, it also violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). 
 
In addition to the fine, InMobi is also directed to set up a comprehensive privacy program that will be independently audited every two years for coming two decades. 
 
InMobi, on the other hand, has said that it discovered technical error at its end that led to this. It also said that it promptly notified the FTC about this on discovering it, making it clear that this was not deliberate.

Higher import prices will add to inflation, which reached 15.6% y/y in April. This will probably force the authorities to tighten monetary policy," he added.Analysts have long been arguing that Nigeria will eventually have to capitulate and devalue its currency given that the government's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nigeria-consumer-prices-march-2016-2016-4">controversial</a> agenda of currency and price controls created a bunch of economic stresses in Africa's largest economy. Most recently, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nigeria-inflation-may-2016-2016-6">inflation soared to a six-year high</a>, which analysts argued underscored the failure of the current FX system to keep inflation under control. Still, devaluing the currency peg will not magically fix all of Nigeria's problems.
