<p>Hyperloop <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> — referred to by Musk as a "cross between a Concorde, a railgun, and an air hockey table" — is a super fast tubular transport system with the ability to theoretically send someone from New York to L.A. in 30 minutes.</p>
<p>Utilizing vacuum-sealed tubes, six-person capsules could be propelled up to speeds of 4,000 miles per hour. All while only feeling the G-forces similar to a car ride.</p>
<p>Colorado-based company, ET3, is planning to build and test its own version of such a hyperloop system, <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/san-francisco-l-30-mins-proposed-transportation-system-180600043.html">Yahoo reports.</a></p>
<p>Coining the term "<keyword id="1738617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Evacuated-Tube-Transport">Evacuated Tube Transport</keyword>," ET3 will build a three-mile-long version to test by the end of 2013. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">With prototypes already constructed, ET3's pioneering foray into hyperloop transportation could quickly move the new travel system from science fiction dream into a feasible reality.</span></p>

"ALMOST EVERYONE in this photo from @SouthwestAir #SWA1380 today is wearing their mask WRONG."</p><h2>Why you need oxygen if an aircraft cabin loses pressure</h2><p>Flying at high altitudes with a hole in an airplane is, to put it lightly, dangerous. At altitudes above 15,000 feet, people struggle to breathe and keep enough oxygen in their blood. They can lose consciousness within minutes - a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-picks-general-investigate-oxygen-loss-hypoxia-incidents-2018-1">condition called hypoxia</a>.</p><p>Symptoms of hypoxia include "nausea, apprehension, tunnel vision, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, tingling sensations, numbness, and mental confusion," according to <a href="https://www.aopa.org/training-and-safety/pic-archive/pilot-and-passenger-physiology/oxygen-use-in-aviation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association</a>.</p><p>The percentage of oxygen in the air at high altitudes isn't the issue, since that stays relatively constant at about 21% until about 70,000 feet. If you are traveling with children or anyone needing special assistance, put on your mask first."</p><p>Southwest Airlines did not immediately respond to Business Insider's questions about the use of oxygen masks on SWA1380.</p><p>An investigation into the incident <a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/Pages/DCA18MA142.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">is underway</a>.</p><p>Although a fear of flying and concerns about airplane safety permeate popular culture, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-gun-death-murder-risk-statistics-2018-3">it's many times safer</a> to travel by airplane than in a car. In fact, SWA1380 is the first fatal US flight in <a href="http://airlines.org/dataset/safety-record-of-u-s-air-carriers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over nine years</a>. 'Almost everyone' in a photo of Southwest's emergency landing wore their oxygen masks 'wrong,' says a former flight attendant

<p>He's the CEO of electric car company Tesla, CEO of space exploration company SpaceX, and chairman of solar power installation company Solar City. </p>
<p>In his spare time, he says he came up with a way to get people from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 30 minutes.</p>
<p>He calls it the "<keyword id="6396317" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hyperloop">Hyperloop</keyword>" and he says he's going to reveal his plan for how it could work on August 12. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Last July, he outlined his vision for the Hyperloop: </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"This system I have in mind, how would you like something that can never crash, is immune to weather, it goes 3 or 4 times faster than the bullet train. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It goes an average speed of twice what an aircraft would do. You would go from downtown LA to downtown San Francisco in under 30 minutes. It would cost you much less than an air ticket than any other mode of transport. I think we could actually make it self-powering if you put solar panels on it, you generate more power than you would consume in the system. There's a way to store the power so it would run 24/7 without using batteries. Yes, this is possible, absolutely."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">While it sounds like a crazy dream, there's research to suggest it's a possibility. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In 1972, Rand Corporation scientist R.M. Salter published <a href="http://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/papers/2008/P4874.pdf">a 17-page report</a> detailing how something like the Hyperloop could be a reality. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Salter called his <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> system the Very High Speed Transit, or VHST. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>"The general principles are fairly straightforward: electromagnetically levitated and propelled cars in an evacuated tunnel," said Salter. </span></span></p>

They would go from Los Angeles to Amarillo, Texas to Chicago to New York city. At each major stop there would be offshoots to take you to major cities.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>"<span>The VHST's 'tubecraft' ride on, and are driven by, electromagnetic waves much as a surfboard rides the ocean's wave," said Salter. "The EM waves are generated by pulsed, or by oscillating, currents in electrical conductors that form the roadbed structure in the evacuated tube way. Opposing magnetic fields in the vehicle are generated means of a loop superconducting cable carrying on the order of a million amperes of current."</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span>The VHST could travel as fast as <span>14,000 miles per hour, allowing for a trip between Los Angeles and New York City in under 30 minutes in a straight trip. </span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span><span>Importantly, Salter didn't believe there was much holding back the VHST from a technological perspective: "</span></span></span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The technical problems associated with the VHST development are manifold and difficult — but no scientific breakthroughs are required," said Salter at the time. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span>He considered construction of the VHST a political problem. Digging giant tunnels underground isn't something that every town is willing to accept. </span></span></span></p>
<p>When Musk finally reveals his master plan for the Hyperloop, let's hope he includes a plan for how to get local, state, and federal government on board. </p>
<p>Because without political support, the Hyperloop is destined to be as much a reality as the VHST. </p>

How Elon Musk Could Change The World With A High-Speed Transportation System Called The Hyperloop

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ukrainian soldiers have relied on US-made Bradley fighting vehicles to stay alive in combat.</li><li>Bradley crewmembers have praised the armor for being strong and durable on the battlefield.</li></ul><p>US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles have proven invaluable for nighttime operations against Russian forces, a Ukrainian soldier said, describing the armored transport as strong, durable, and highly capable in combat.</p><p>Throughout its months-long grinding counteroffensive, the Ukrainian military has relied on its arsenal of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-inside-ukraine-us-bradley-fighting-vehicles-troops-alive-russia-2023-9">M2A2 Bradleys</a> to brave incoming Russian fire, navigate across sprawling minefields, and face other deadly hazards. Kyiv's soldiers have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-soldiers-say-us-bradley-ifvs-saved-lives-russia-attacks-2023-6" rel="">credited</a> the vehicles with keeping them alive in battle, saying that they wouldn't survive the same threats in Ukraine's Soviet-era troop carriers. In some cases, Bradleys have even been send to rescue <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-used-us-bradley-ifv-evacuate-civilians-heavy-russia-fire-2023-9" rel="">civilians stranded</a> under heavy fire.</p><p>In a recent <a href="https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1702418169929826500">video interview</a> with Ukraine's Strategic Communications Directorate, which was published on Thursday by the country's defense ministry, a Bradley crew from the 47th Mechanized Brigade described their experience training on the vehicle and then employing it on the battlefield. The interviewees — a commander, gunner, and driver — praised the Bradley for being strong and for its ability to withstand mine blasts. </p><p>"It's a serious machine, a very serious machine," a soldier said. </p><div type="image" title="Soldiers and mechanics from Ukraine's 47th Mechanized Brigade test drive a US made Bradley Fighting Vehicle at a secret workshop in a wooded area in Zaporizhzhia Region, Ukraine" height="683" width="1024" msid="103698949" hostid="261"></div><p>One soldier described the Bradley's thermal imager of being "very high quality," allowing the crew to clearly see targets several miles out. He said that although the firepower range of the Bradley is lacking — its primary gun is a cannon that can fire hundreds of 25 mm rounds a minute — its projectiles can still cause significant damage. </p><p>"The shrapnel density is crazy, the firepower density is just insane," the soldier said. "Target acquisition takes seconds, just seconds. At night, this machine is absolutely priceless, simply invaluable. You capture targets much faster, visibility is better than during the day." </p><p>Another soldier said comparing the Bradley to its Soviet-era counterparts is like "night and day." They are armed with Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles — capable of hitting enemy tanks and armored vehicles in the distance with high explosive warheads — and two guns, including the 25 mm M242 Bushmaster chain gun and a 7.62mm M240C machine gun. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-see-bradley-armored-vehicle-us-sending-ukraine-2023-1#proven-in-battle-2" rel="">Bradley</a> was initially built as a response to Soviet infantry fighting vehicles, and it entered service in the 1980s before being deployed to the Gulf War in the following decade. According to a 1992 Government Accountability Office <a href="https://www.gao.gov/assets/nsiad-92-94.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> on the Bradley's performance during that conflict, the vehicle "proved to be lethal" and its weapons demonstrated that they were "effective against a variety of targets." The Bradley was then sent to Iraq in the 2000s.</p><p>The US announced in early January that it would send Bradleys to Ukraine, and because it is a tracked vehicle, it was initially misidentified by some observers as a tank. "It's not a tank, but it's a tank killer," Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said to reporters at the time in an attempt to clear the apparent confusion. </p><p>"It will provide a significant boost to Ukraine's already impressive armor capabilities. But despite the heavy praise by Ukrainian soldiers, Bradleys are not indestructible and they have still <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-provided-bradleys-ukrainian-troops-alive-russian-tactics-knock-out-2023-7" rel="">fallen victim</a> to Russia's formidable defenses and relentless artillery in the months since. </p><p>According to the latest Pentagon data, the US has pledged a total of 186 Bradleys to Ukraine as part of the nearly $44 billion in security assistance that the Biden administration has committed to Kyiv since Russian forces invaded in February 2022. Open-source intelligence collected by the site <a href="https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-ukrainian.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Oryx</a> shows that 53 of the Washington-provided vehicles have been destroyed, damaged, or abandoned during fighting.</p><p>It does not appear to be the case that any of the Bradleys have been captured by the Russians, and Ukrainian crews have repaired some enough to return to combat.</p>

The caption said it was filmed in the front carriage of the train, and a voice could be heard over a tannoy advising passengers to make their way to the rear of the train where they could get onto the platform.</p><p>A top comment on the video said they were in the last carriage and there was no announcement from the driver, and the doors wouldn't open, which caused the ensuing panic.</p><p>A Transport for London spokesperson told Insider in an email exchange, "We're sorry for the distress caused at Clapham Common. The London Fire Brigade attended the station and confirmed there was no fire. TikTokers captured the moment passengers smashed the windows of a subway train to escape over fears of a fire

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One in 500 Americans is on kidney dialysis. Extreme-weather events can threaten their lives.</li><li>Renal-care experts told Insider how they keep patients alive when big storms hit.</li></ul><p>On Christmas Day 2022, while most residents in upstate New York were getting ready to enjoy the festivities, Michael Sloma was on a mercy mission to save a life.</p><p>The region was still reeling from <a href="https://www.insider.com/death-toll-in-buffalo-winter-storm-2022-12?amp">a once-in-a-century blizzard</a> that had left dozens of people dead, and Sloma was determined that a woman who needed dialysis wasn't going to join their ranks.</p><p>Sloma, the group vice president of operations at US Renal Care, is one of many unsung heroes who leap into action when snowstorms, hurricanes, or wildfires hit the US. </p><p><a href="https://www.kidney.org/news/newsroom/fsindex#:~:text=In%202018%2C%20785%2C883%20Americans%20had,lived%20with%20a%20kidney%20transplant." target="_blank" rel="noopener">One in 500 Americans is on dialysis</a>, according to the National Kidney Foundation, and each knows it is their lifeline. The chaos of an extreme-weather event can put many of them at risk of missing their all-important treatments. </p><p>When snow and hurricane-level winds hit Buffalo, New York, for four days straight last Christmas and residents sheltered in their homes, Sloma took to the dangerous roads.</p><p>"We're used to dealing with snow and removing snow, so that really doesn't bother us," he told Insider. "But they were starting to say on the news that this was going to be a really bad storm — generational-type blizzard storm. Conditions were such that you could not see literally a foot in front of your car. We had a total of 23 people stuck inside various clinics — about half were patients, and half were staff."</p><p>Most worrying was a nursing-home resident trapped by the snow who required dialysis and needed to be evacuated as soon as possible.</p><p>"Six of us dug through the snow for three hours, creating a path that was 30 feet long by 4-to-5 feet tall to the parking lot, but that didn't reach the road. We were able to convince a nice gentleman who had some construction equipment to dig a path for us to get our vehicles into the parking lot to the main road," Sloma said.</p><p>The team triumphed and got the patient to Sloma's vehicle on the road, but the plan to get her to another nursing home fell through because it was also blocked by snow.</p><p>"So, I put her into the back seat of my car, and with the nurse, we transported her to the local hospital. She's now doing great," he said.</p><h2>By car, by boat, by snowplow</h2><div type="image" title="Fort Myers Beach, Florida, aerial view of damaged property after Hurricane Ian." height="2530" width="3374" msid="98430911" hostid="261" sizebytes="867516"></div><p>As Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas and Louisiana in 2017, Ariel Brigham sat on the roof of her Houston home, waiting to be rescued. </p><p>She watched the water engulf her house and flood the area around her. She was trapped. </p><p>But the rising water level was not the only danger Brigham was facing. The hurricane meant that she could not get kidney dialysis for seven days. </p><p>Even after she got to the safety of a friend's house, Brigham was still in mortal danger.</p><p>"I gained 30 pounds of fluid, and I was extremely swollen — my face, my hands, my legs, my whole body was super swollen. It was tough, and pretty much all I could do was sleep," she <a href="https://www.kidneyfund.org/article/7-days-without-dialysis-surviving-hurricane" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. </p><p>When she finally reached a hospital, she said, "I was basically at the point where they said my heart was slowing down. But even then, I had to wait another four hours before I could dialyze."</p><p>Like many dialysis patients, Brigham needed treatment every three days to replace the function of normal kidneys. Dialysis patients need their blood cleared through this procedure. <a href="https://www.kidney.org/sites/default/files/v27_a2.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Each missed session increases the risk of death by 10%. </a></p><p>LaVarne Burton, the president and CEO of the American Kidney Fund, told Insider: "I have known of people who skipped even one session and unfortunately passed away."</p><p>To meet the extreme-weather health challenge, dialysis-care providers across the US have created disaster-preparedness teams to keep their patients alive. The units are made up of meteorologists, advisors from utility companies, and patient-care staff who meet twice daily when extreme weather endangers patients' lives.</p><p>Mary Dittrich, the executive vice president and chief medical officer of US Renal Care, and Phil Sarnowski, the senior vice president and business-transformation partner at US Renal Care, described how the teams combat a potential weather disaster. </p><p>The disaster-response teams can be a lifeline, whether that's by driving a car driving through a storm, sailing a boat during a flood, or riding a snowplow through a blizzard.</p><p>The moment the phone rings with a notification of an imminent weather event, the teams slam a metaphorical red button. The disaster-preparedness teams move quickly to rearrange dialysis appointments and ensure patients can access care facilities, food supplies, and clinical goods. </p><p>Members of the Red Cross and the National Guard deploy, government offices receive notice, and health commissioners and fire departments remain on standby. </p><p>Sarnowski told Insider that they also have companies ready to provide water and electricity generators with just 24 hours' notice.</p><div type="image" title="A snowplow driver talks to a homeowner while removing feet of snow from a residential street in Draper, Utah, on February 23, 2023." height="5336" width="7114" msid="98430912" hostid="261" sizebytes="1037138"></div><p>Most US renal-care patients have their dialysis at home. There are two types of dialysis: one, called hemodialysis, uses a machine; and the other, peritoneal dialysis, uses a tube in the abdomen.</p><p>"For peritoneal-dialysis patients, which is the majority of our home patients, we train them to do manual exchanges, meaning they can continue their treatments, even in the absence of electricity, manually connecting and disconnecting and running fluids into their stomach or their abdomen and then draining," Dittrich said.</p><div type="image" title="Senior connecting peritoneal dialysis with catheter at home." height="3840" width="5119" msid="98430914" hostid="261" sizebytes="1106590"></div><p>For many reasons, but largely because end-stage kidney failure often halts a person's ability to work, many dialysis patients live within a low-income bracket. </p><p>This can be financially crippling, Burton said. Patients often pay roughly $10,000 a year out of pocket for treatment, she said.</p><p>That's why the American Kidney Fund has developed a disaster-relief program.</p><p>Patients can receive $250 when a weather emergency hits, and it can "replace medications if they've lost them, it can fund renal-friendly food, cost of transportation, temporary housing. "I'm dismayed by the number of these that we're seeing and have to prepare for, while, at the same time, being confident in our ability. But they challenge us, they're very stressful and difficult."</p><p>Dittrich and Sarnowski said the heroes of these stories are the staff who provide the care. </p><p>For patients that receive their treatments in clinics, they see care staff for 12 hours a week at minimum, Dittrich said, and patients and staff "become like family," hence the "extraordinary levels of commitment."</p><div type="image" title="Kidney-dialysis patient." height="3744" width="4992" msid="98431020" hostid="261" sizebytes="317200"></div><p>The dialysis-disaster program has produced a "blueprint for coordinated efforts between historic competitors," Dittrich said.</p><p>"Medical companies work together. We take other providers' patients, we take hospital patients, they take ours, we share supplies, we share generators, we share water," Dittrich said. The collaborations were "validating, affirming, and inspiring," she said.</p><p>For Sloma, who organized the lifesaving rescue of one dialysis patient in snowbound upstate New York, this is certainly true.</p><p>"All things considered, even having to shovel a lot of snow, it was probably the most meaningful Christmas Day that I've ever had," he said.</p>

The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency can now start potentially life-saving coordination efforts, </span><a href="https://www.nola.com/news/politics/article_c37e7a2a-a420-11e9-80ea-cfc043d2796d.html?1562898066368"><span style="font-weight: 400;">according to Nola News.</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> In addition to FEMA personnel, 3,000 National Guard troops have been deployed to the area to help. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In Alexandria, Louisiana, a mega shelter is set up to receive 2,000 people and their pets, transported there by the State of Louisiana, according to </span><a href="https://www.kalb.com/content/news/Alexandria-mega-shelter-prepared-to-hold-2000-evacuees-512657571.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">local news station KALB</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The cots are reserved for people with certain medical needs, such as being on dialysis, having diabetes, being on a feeding tube, or needing another kind of care. People from search and rescue will also be brought to the shelter. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Those who don't meet that criteria will be able to shelter in a local shelter in their parish. "</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">They can contact their Office of Emergency Preparedness director in their parish or call 211 to get a list of the shelters that are actually open," the Department of Child and Family Services lead area manager Daniel Doyle told KALB's Anna Denton. The suspect reportedly used a handgun during the shooting.</p><p>A law-enforcement source told Business Insider that investigators said they do not believe the shooting is connected to international terrorism, and instead, said it may have been a domestic dispute between the shooter and her boyfriend who worked for YouTube.</p><p>Aghdam, believed to be between 35 to 40-years-old, reportedly drove from Southern California to San Bruno, according to <a href="http://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/possible-active-shooter-at-youtube-in-san-bruno/1098585330" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KRON-4 News</a>.</p><p>Aghdam, who had a YouTube channel, ranted against the company that "<span>discriminated and filtered"</span>&#xa0; her content, <a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Suspect-in-You-Tube-Shooting-Posted-Rants-About-the-Company-Online--478711713.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC reported</a>. She claimed in the video that her channel began receiving fewer views once the company filtered her content.</p><p>"<span>There is not equal growth opportunity on You Tube," Aghdam reportedly said in a Facebook post in 2017.</span></p><p>At least four victims were transported to nearby hospitals, including San Francisco General Hospital and Stanford Medical Center, according to San Burno Police Department chief Ed Barberini.</p><p><keyword id="6355470" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="law">Law</keyword> enforcement officials who arrived at the scene at 12:48 p.m. found several victims with gunshot wounds in what was described as a "very chaotic" scene, Barberini said in a press conference.</p><p>The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also said on <a href="https://twitter.com/ATFHQ/status/981271137782063107" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter</a> that it was responding to the incident.</p><p>Google, which owns YouTube, <a href="https://twitter.com/Google_Comms/status/981283098443751424" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> that it was coordinating with authorities "to evacuate the buildings and ensure the safety of employees in the area."</p><p>Social media posts on the shooting began emerging in the afternoon describing the scenes that unfolded:</p><div><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Active shooter at YouTube HQ. <p>Musk describes the <keyword id="6396317" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hyperloop">hyperloop</keyword> as something that is a "cross between a Concorde, a railgun and an air hockey table," and that it could go from San Francisco to New York City in 30 minutes.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Sounds like something straight out of a <keyword id="436625" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Science-fiction">science fiction</keyword> story right? Well, that's because it is. Even before Rand Corporation scientist R.M. Salter published <a href="http://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/papers/2008/P4874.pdf">a 17-page report</a> detailing how something like the Hyperloop — or electromagnetically levitated and propelled cars in an <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/28/evacuated-tube-travel-daryl-osler_n_1385661.html" target="_blank">evacuated tunnel</a> — could be a reality in 1972, famed science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein wrote about "vacutubes" in his 1956 story "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/0786117451" target="_blank">Double Star</a>."</p>

A two passenger capsule was just emptying; Dak shoved me in so quickly that I did not see him set the door combination… The few minutes we had been crammed in the vacutube had been long enough for me to devise a plan…"</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: left;">Other science fiction greats like Arthur C. Clarke and Larry Niven (1976's "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/World-Time-State-Series-Book/dp/1455153206">A World out of Time</a>," portrayed a gravity-assisted subway) also featured similar ideas on transportation.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">And neither they nor Heinlein were the first. The earliest mention of travel by tubes in science fiction could be Michel Verne in the 1888 story, "<a href="http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0606611h.html" target="_blank">An Express of the Future</a>."</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The story imagines riding air-driven carriages in submarine tubes from Boston to Liverpool, England in 2 hours and 40 minutes and reaching speeds of 1,800 kilometers per hour.</p>
<blockquote class="blockquote">"Coming at once to the question of working, he filled the tubes--transformed into a sort of pea-shooter of interminable length--with a series of carriages, to be carried with their travelers by powerful currents of air, in the same way that dispatches are conveyed pneumatically round Paris."</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: left;">As astounding as this is, science fiction ideas often have at the very least a starting point from which to build upon science fact. We can point to an 1812 document under the section "Calculations and Remarks Tending to Prove the Practicality, Effects and Advantages of a Plan for the Rapid Conveyance of Goods and Passengers Upon An Iron Road Through a Tube of 30 Feet in Area, of the Power and Velocity of Air" by George Medhurst where he introduces his idea of air-driven tube travel.</p>

<p>So there you go. The idea of traveling really, really ridiculously fast in tubes (at least in relation to the time period) across cities, entire continents or under oceans has been around for quite some time. Here's hoping Musk can take the concept from science fiction to science fact in our lifetimes.</p>
