<ul><li><keyword id="128026" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Eros-International">Eros International</keyword> and <keyword id="9073081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="STX-Entertainment">STX Entertainment</keyword> have recently merged to form a new entity, Eros STX Global Corporation.</li><li>The merged entity will have an increased economic scale of more than $600 million in pro forma revenue for calendar 2019 and over $300 million of aggregated future revenue from STX Entertainment films already released last year.</li><li><keyword id="354184" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pradeep-Dwivedi">Pradeep Dwivedi</keyword>, CEO-India, Eros International Media Ltd. and <keyword id="281495" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ali-Hussein">Ali Hussein</keyword>, CEO, ErosNow throw some light on what the merger means and how it will help Eros International grow. They also tell us what's in it for the consumers.</li></ul> Eros International and STX Entertainment have recently merged together to create a ‘pre-eminent global media company which can develop, produce and distribute Bollywood and Hollywood premium content at scale and across many platforms of both the entities’. The combined entity will have the capability to take Eros's and STX's content libraries and pipeline of original content to a broad and growing global audience. The new entity has been named Eros STX Global Corporation. The organization has put together a management team led by <keyword id="190952" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kishore-Lulla">Kishore Lulla</keyword> as Executive Co-Chairman, Robert Simonds as Co-Chairman &amp; Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Warren as Chief Financial Officer, <keyword id="2953806" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishika-Lulla-Singh">Rishika Lulla Singh</keyword> and Noah Fogelson as Co-Presidents, and <keyword id="8711638" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="prem-parameswaran">Prem Parameswaran</keyword> as Head of Corporate Strategy. In a recent conversation with Pradeep Dwivedi, CEO-India, Eros International Media Ltd. and Ali Hussein, CEO, ErosNow, we tried to decode what this merger will entail, how it will help both the entities grow and how users stand to gain. Edited excerpts: Q) Tell us a bit about the merger of Eros International and STX Entertainment. How will it help you grow your organization? Pradeep Dwivedi: The merger will help to create a pre-eminent global media company which can develop, produce and distribute Bollywood and Hollywood premium content at scale and across many platforms of both the entities. As part of this transaction, $125 million of incremental equity led by TPG, Hony Capital and Liberty Global will help boost our liquidity and maintain a healthy balance sheet. The merged entity will have an increased economic scale of more than $600 million in pro forma revenue for calendar 2019 and over $300 million of aggregated future revenue from STX Entertainment films already released last year. We believe that the combination can yield run-rate revenue and cost synergies of up to $50 million that can be achieved by the calendar year 2022. The main areas for synergy opportunities are around content creation and distribution as well as reducing overhead and our borrowing cost. The deal comes at a time when the entire movie production sector shut in major global markets due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will see STX merging into the NYSE-listed Eros International and creating an enterprise with a $1 billion valuation. We strongly believe that the combined forces of Eros and STX will be beneficial for our shareholders. Q) As a result of the merger, how do Eros's consumers stand to gain? Pradeep Dwivedi: The combined company will have a robust pipeline of feature-length films and episodic content with powerful, well-established positions in the world's fastest-growing global markets. Today, audience is looking for all-inclusive content across languages, formats and genres. This combined business model will, therefore, have the unique capability to present Eros's and STX's robust film and episodic libraries and pipeline of original content to a broad and growing global audience. The OTT platform – Eros Now will benefit from quality assets with STX for Eros Now Prime, which was recently launched and will showcase English content, starting with content from <keyword id="686589" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="NBCUniversal">NBCUniversal</keyword>. In addition, the merger will see developing international distribution in adjacent markets and creating potential global stories that could be best told on an OTT service. The content consumed through multi-year output deals and strategic alliances and the markets leading to Eros Now streaming platform. Q) Are mergers and partnerships like this the future of the OTT ecosystem? Ali Hussein: Eros Now has been on a strong growth trajectory over the last few years and now amassed 187 million registered users, and 26.2 million paid subscribers that come to us from 150 countries. A large part of the growth strategy for Eros Now is to launch sub-brands further like Eros Now Prime and others, and, further deep penetrate India. Also, developing our International presence to become a more glocal player in our adjacent markets. Organic growth and M&amp;A are all options we will consider based on the opportunity to be a relevant digital video brand to consumers in markets around the world. The newly created entity will leverage existing global partnerships with Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, NBCUniversal, Google and YouTube. Q) The combined company expected to generate approximately $50 million in run-rate operating synergies within 24 months of closing. Can you throw some light on this? Pradeep Dwivedi: There are significant synergy opportunities between Eros and STX which focus on content creation, distribution partnership as well as reducing overhead and our borrowing cost. Our emphasis would be on creating relevant content that has a global appeal and establish cross-over content partnerships with India and USA creative talent. This will thus help in substantially driving growth. While from a distribution point of view, the combined business will help in optimizing theatrical financing and create economic opportunities. Also, help in integrating Eros's theatrical release into STX's distribution agreement and help establish a direct theatrical distribution partnership, in addition, to bundle selling STX and Eros's programming to various network and streaming platform. The synergies also further help in enhancing and building their presence in the Chinese market, which is an upcoming entertainment market. The merger will also see co-production and co-financing Chinese as well as globally relevant content besides broadening Eros Now's proposition with western content and driving global subscriber growth. Q) What kind of global exposure will this merger help Eros International gain? Pradeep Dwivedi: There are approximately $50 million of highly actionable operating synergies across the global operations. These synergies can therefore monetize STX content on Eros’s OTT platform. This will be in addition to the recent announcement of Eros Now partnering with NBCUniversal and introducing a new format called Eros Now Prime. Eros Now Prime caters to premium English content programming majorly targeting the South Asian diaspora. Also, the OTT platform will benefit from STX quality assets, develop international distribution in adjacent markets and create potential global stories that could be best told on an OTT service. Furthermore, the merger will see Eros benefitting from STX global network, distribution agreements, partnerships, and STX's China relationship. Q) What kind of content offering can we expect from the new entity in the near future? Will this content be specific to each individual market? Ali Hussein: The merger creates the first truly independent media company that offers the best of Bollywood and Hollywood. STX's content slate caters to the massive and growing English content consumers in India. While Eros through its OTT platform will be offering original shows, short format content - Eros Now Quickie, music, Bollywood and regional language films that have a global appeal. The combined company expected to release close to 40 feature films in 2020 and more than 100 hours of original episodic content. Q) How will this step help fuel growth for Eros overall? What kind of growth expectations do you have for the current financial year? Ali Hussein: Synergies at the group level exist across efficiencies in content production, distribution expertise and penetrate offline audiences in US/India/China and ROW. Also, with the future of video technology and next-generation formats, new and exciting stories will be created that are more global in nature and bind the world with compelling cross border stories. The merger helps in leveraging the core premise of Indian entertainment for Eros Now and diversify into several sub-brands such as Eros Now Prime, Eros Now Quickie and other such formats by the end of FY 21. This will help Eros Now penetrate in India as well as global markets by offering glocal as well as Indian content respectively.

‘Eros International and STX Entertainment together can yield run-rate revenue and cost synergies of up to $50 million by 2022’

<ul><li><keyword id="2480506" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Eros-Now">Eros Now</keyword> last week announced its massive content slate for 2021 which includes 33 film premieres and 13 original series. It will offer a range of program formats in languages including Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi amongst others. </li><li>We speak to <keyword id="281495" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ali-Hussein">Ali Hussein</keyword>, CEO, Eros Now who walks us through his roadmap for bringing 50 million paid subscribers onto the platform within the next 2 years and his key areas of focus for 2021.</li></ul>Roughly a month after announcing it had added roughly 6.9 million net new paid subscriber additions over the past six months (as of September 30, 2020), Ali Hussein, CEO, Eros Now said that the platform has set its sights on touching 50 million paid users from the current 36.2 million in the next 18-24 months. Last week, the platform also announced its content slate for 2021, with 46 new titles including 33 film premieres and 13 original series. It will offer a range of program formats in languages including Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi amongst others. Additionally, Eros Now will debut 30 new Quickies and 10 new short films. To understand the platform’s growth strategy and its larger plans for the upcoming year, we caught up with Hussein who gave us a sneak peek into all the Eros Now is up to. Thought behind Eros Now’s 2021 content slate Eros Now which is the over-the-top platform of motion picture production and distribution company Eros International already has a rich repository of films under its banner thereby giving Eros Now a strong content library. With the lockdown, more and more people opened up to experimenting with different digital content platforms and Eros Now, which also on-boarded around 6.9 million paid subscribers during the lockdown months now want to ensure their users get something extra on their platform. “Our strategy is actually quite simple, we will roughly look at one movie premiere every week and we will also look at 1-2 big budget originals. India is a diverse country and its difficult to predict what people like to watch. Hence, we will offer a combination of content like originals that will drive the younger audiences who have the propensity to pay a subscription price, leading to more episodic behavior. We will also have movie premieres of theatrical scale that will create a deeper penetration both among regional and mass audiences.” The platform has also launched a campaign - #KahaaniHarRangKi, based on insights derived from Eros Now’s proprietary user data, and is customized to satisfy the demand of Eros Now’s target audience in the Indian and global diaspora. The promo features <keyword id="6354535" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayushmann-khurrana">Ayushmann Khurrana</keyword> and Kartik Aaryan and has already created a buzz on social media. Factors that gave a boost to Eros Now The lockdown has led to a behavioural change where consumers no longer mind spending on content that they like. However, there is a lot of clutter in the OTT space with many global players spending big bucks on both content and promotions. So what are the factors that have helped Eros Now woo consumers and bring them to their platform? “When new content was not being launched on television, people started sampling content on different platforms. People realized that Eros Now had a rich collection of movies including Badlapur, Tanu Weds Manu, Bajirao Mastani etc and then suddenly people started watching movies sequentially. So films is one of the core areas where we differentiate ourselves because the rest of the ecosystem is a combination of maybe Hollywood and some Indian originals. But the largest slate of films is only available on Eros Now. So a lot of people broke the inertia and went through the learning curve of understanding how to use the platforms. Secondly, we kept launching a lot of packaging. We resurfaced some of the older catalog with interesting mash-ups. It was more about remarketing to our customers in terms of the depth of the catalog and that enabled discovery. We also did a few shows which were completely shot during the lockdown and those did well too,” explained Hussein. Eros Now had also removed the paywall in the initial days of the lockdown which also helped introduce a lot of new users to the platform, he added. Apart from providing varied content, Eros Now has also been strengthening its technology side to ensure that consumers get the best experience, which is also ensuring long-term stickiness. Eros Now’s expansion plans The platform has been steadily building its global presence and is already available in the US, UK and Canada through Apple TV Channels. It is also available in China and the Middle East and Southeast Asia. “We've been spending a lot of time and resource in aggregating international audiences and that will continue to be a significant trend for us as a brand,” he shared. He also added that owning to the popularity of Indian content in markets like the Middle East or Southeast Asia, the next step is looking at how we get more local. “Our aim would not be to take our learnings and data sciences to maybe develop more crossover or hybrid programming for these markets and become more local. That will be a big theme for us in 2021, getting into 2022,” he said. On what his overarching focus is going to be for the upcoming year, to take Eros Now to the next level, Hussein said, “One clear area of focus for us is going to be technology, because that's a clear differentiator of how we operate and distinguish ourselves in the ecosystem. Secondly, we will keep focusing on our content. Along with the announcement of our content slate for 2021, we will also have a few more announcements for the first half of 2021, when we will talk about our studio slate. Also, due to our merger with <keyword id="10417540" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="stx-filmworks">STX Filmworks</keyword>, we will be bringing a fairly interesting strategy on English programming on Eros Now, which is a first for us. So content and experiences for customers in India will be a big part of 2021. And our final focus area will be international expansion.” While not revealing the whole story, he also shared that the platform might soon expand to Africa.

 At such a critical crossroad when most industries are expected to go the <keyword id="6369871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobile-app">mobile app</keyword> way, Business Insider India chats up with Karan Bedi, COO of <keyword id="2480506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Eros-Now">Eros Now</keyword> to find out what the future of the entertainment might look like. 
 
1. A mere 7-8% of India’s population is online. Don’t you see that as a limiting factor to online movie streaming? 
 
While the numbers today are not that large, they are growing, and with telcos gearing up for 4G, it’s a massive potential market. In India, 7-8% is still a large number, and we expect it to be 50% in the next 2-3 years. 
 
2. Eros Now has announced online-only premieres for some recent films. Could this dilute the media attention theatrical premiers get? 
 
 Theatrical premiers are of paramount importance. The charm of the big screen is here to stay. With our online initiative of ‘TV se pehle’ (Before it comes on TV) we are streaming some of our key properties for online viewing. At Eros we believe digital is the future of the entertainment industry, and we’ve stepped ahead of satellite television to jump directly to Eros Now. 
 
3. Online original series are a rage today with players like AIB and TVF grabbing eyeballs. What’s the potential market for such free online shows? 
 
The limit is only the size of the population that has access to the internet. Like with TV, there is always space for everyone in the country to be involved in some form of online entertainment content. TVF and AIB have their focus on short-form funny stuff, and while we may have similar content, some of it has a completely different genre. 
 
4. How do you see entertainment consumed in the future? 
 
There is an unequivocal belief that the future of entertainment is on the internet. India is primarily a mobile-first market, and is getting to a point where it might be a mobile only market. Entertainment has moved light years ahead of TV. 
 
5. Many experts argue against that with the statistics of the digitized TV audience. Your comments on that. 
 
Being the largest studio in Bollywood, Eros has been historically known for top quality entertainment. Our sense of content is unparalleled and that’s a big driver of audiences to our platform. Our technical base also allows us to offer cool new platform specific features that our audiences would enjoy and can innovate with. 
 
6. Developing economies like India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore are the global hubs for piracy. Do you see these people willing to pay for movies or music? 
 
Piracy has been a concern for the entertainment industry for times immemorial. Now we have pirated DVDs, before that we had pirated cassettes. As platforms evolve, piracy would also evolve. However, if you give people easy access to content that promises them a great experience at a reasonable price, they would come on board. 
 
7. What could possibly be the dominant models for entertainment monetization? 
 
There are several monetization models - transactional, ad supported or subscription-based. Many others are evolving. It’s too early to decide what works best and what doesn’t. 
 
8. Any plans to go app only? 
 
There are no plans as of now. We are rolling out apps for Smart TVs and adding new functionalities to the app and website.

The future of entertainment is online: Eros Now

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"WeWoreWhat," <keyword id="2864013" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Danielle-Bernstein">Danielle Bernstein</keyword>'s fashion blog with 2.5 million followers on Instagram, is in a legal dispute with Brooklyn-based lingerie company The Great Eros. </li><li>The Great Eros has claimed Bernstein copied the pattern of its signature tissue paper and put a similar design on wallpaper, swimsuits, and other <keyword id="6362766" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="apparel">apparel</keyword>. </li><li>Bernstein said that she had never purchased or been gifted anything from The Great Eros, and that an internal investigation showed her designers were not familiar with Eros' tissue paper. </li><li>Eros' lawyer says he has evidence, in the form of showroom logs and requests from Bernstein for free merchandise from the brand, that Bernstein was familiar with the brand prior to making the designs in question.</li><li>Although The Great Eros is accusing Bernstein of copying the design, WeWoreWhat filed a lawsuit against the lingerie company first, in a move Eros' lawyer called, "an underhanded attempt to race to the courthouse." </li><li>"The lawsuit was filed in response to repeated threats," Bernstein's lawyer told Business Insider. "While TGE [The Great Eros] failed to provide any information to support its claims, we felt we needed to take the threats seriously."</li></ul>Mega-influencer Danielle Bernstein's fashion brand WeWoreWhat, which has 2.5 million followers on Instagram, officially kicked off a legal battle with a Brooklyn-based lingerie company who said she copied one of its patterns.The Great Eros had been using a pattern of female nudes on their brand's tissue paper for years when they noticed a similar pattern showing up on swimsuits, leggings, and wallpaper sold by Bernstein, Eros' counsel Jeff Gluck told Business Insider. In August, Eros' lawyers contacted Bernstein, and though Eros was the party alleging that WeWoreWhat had violated its intellectual propriety, WeWoreWhat was the one to file a lawsuit against the company on Thursday, according a court filing.WeWoreWhat's suit seeks a declaratory judgement that it did not violate any Eros' copyrights, and asks for Eros to pay its legal fees. Bernstein's lawyer, Robert Salame, declined to share how much money in legal fees the company has accumulated so far.<div type="image" title="the great eros bernstein designs" height="795" width="1060" msid="78775878" hostid="261"></div>"This is a small business. They feel threatened, they feel scared. They feel that their livelihood is at stake," said Gluck. He slammed Bernstein's choice to "sue a small business in the middle of a global pandemic, in the middle of a recession, when 30% of businesses in New York are already going under, and you're this multimillion dollar, powerful entity." Bernstein addressed the claims in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17910689866470591/?hl=en">a statement on social media</a>."I am absolutely not trying to hurt anyone or seek financial gain from this," Bernstein wrote. "I am an advocated and committed supporter of small businesses, and as an entrepreneur and designer, I hold creative liberty and ownership in the highest regard." Bernstein claims that her company's pattern was influenced by Matisse's line drawings, and that, "generally ubiquitous concepts, such as silhouettes of the human form," aren't exclusive to one brand or company. She also wrote that she had never seen Eros' tissue paper prior to the complaint, had never purchased or been gifted anything from the store, and had conducted an internal investigation that concluded her designers were not familiar with Eros' pattern.However, Gluck says that the similarities are no coincidence. Records of showroom logs and gifting requests show that Bernstein visited Eros' showroom (not its <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> store), and that Bernstein had asked for free products from The Great Eros in the past, Gluck said. In addition, Gluck said that they aren't simply claiming the rights to line drawings of female nudes — it's the whole design that matters, from the stroke of the lines to the scale and arrangement of the figures. On Saturday, Eros released a statement on social media asking Bernstein to withdraw her suit within 24 hours. Bernstein did not withdraw, lawyers from both parties told Business Insider. Instead, Gluck says Bernstein is "doubling down."Salame confirmed to Business Insider that they had communicated with Eros' legal team after 24 hours had passed, but declined to elaborate on the content of the communications. He also noted that the deadline was made over social media, rather than directly communicated to Bernstein's counsel. Gluck said he received a letter from Bernstein's lawyers Monday morning "suggesting she will only withdraw her complaint if The Great Eros signs an agreement saying that she didn't copy them." "Obviously, that will never happen," Gluck said. "Danielle, you have become a bully," The Great Eros wrote on its Instagram story over the weekend."And now, you sued us, in secret, while pretending you wanted to talk to us about settling," it continued. "It does not get any lower than that. You just drove 100 mph into a brick wall, because your bulls--t stops here and now."<div type="image" title="The Great Eros Danielle Bernstein comments" height="1216" width="2116" msid="78775879" hostid="261"></div>This isn't the first time Bernstein and WeWoreWhat has been embroiled in controversy over its designs. In July, Bernstein was accused of copying a small designer's mask designs. Screenshots posted by fashion watchdog Diet Prada allege that Bernstein contacted Karen Perez to ask for a free mask that featured a gold chain. Two days later, Bernstein allegedly told Perez she was also making a mask with a detachable chain, but assured her that she wasn't copying. Bernstein rose to prominence as an Instagram <keyword id="1864633" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Influencer">influencer</keyword> and blogger. In 2017, she was named the Forbes 30 under 30 list. Her apparel has been carried by Macy's and she has released multiple collaborations with the swimsuit brand Onia, who is also a party in the lawsuit. In May of 2019, the team released its fourth collaborative collection. Within three hours of its release, they sold $1 million in merchandise, <a href="https://wwd.com/business-news/business-features/onia-danielle-bernstein-weworewhat-rakes-1-million-3-hours-1203121131/">WWD reported</a>. But for many veterans in the field, the platform's policies that discourage in-person <a href="https://onlyfans.com/terms.html">sex work make it unattractive</a>. For many sex workers, the little-discussed Eros.com has become the go-to platform for selling sex online, despite it receiving little attention in the media.Three sex workers who spoke to Insider said the site is preferred for its simplicity and discretion and explained how it works. <h2>Eros is an advertising platform used by escorts</h2>Eros acts as an advertising platform where many sex workers sell their services, but unlike OnlyFans, the company does not handle transactions for workers. Users can scroll through page after page of escorts who can cater to almost any niche interest imaginable — from the girlfriend experience to the edgier, kinkier part of the spectrum. The website offers listings in nearly all fifty states, as well as Canada, Italy, and the UK. At the top of the homepage, Eros provides major categories like Escorts, BDSM, and Massage, but also includes a search function that allows for more specific queries.Escorts will oftentimes list their rates per hour on their page, without explicitly stating what services would be rendered. Sometimes they'll personalize these — for example, "Unwind &amp; Relax 2hr" or "The Jewels Experience 3hr" — and frequently they'll include an overnight or traveling rate as well. A Toronto-based escort who goes by Ella Blaire professionally told Insider she made an OnlyFans during the pandemic for the sake of maintaining connections with existing clients and replacing lost income, but has never felt comfortable posting explicit content online, so as she returns to more in-person work she "prioritizes OnlyFans less and less.""Some people think in-person work is safer because there's more discretion, because you're not posting things online," she explained in an interview with Insider, "whereas some people think online is safer because you don't have the risk of meeting unsafe clients."To maintain privacy, some sex workers will blur out their faces in their public-facing photos. Some use screening procedures in an attempt to stay safe. For example, Blaire requires a valid form of ID, a recent reference from a past provider with contact information, employment verification, and good standing on the website P411, a screening and verification platform for sex workers.Justine*, a NYC-based escort, likes Eros and in-person escorting because she doesn't have to use content strategies employed by OnlyFans influencers. "It's just a lot more work than the straight up 'one hour for x amount of money,'" she said. <h2>Eros and other platforms that host sex workers operate in a tricky legal landscape</h2>Eros, OnlyFans, and other platforms that host content and ads from sex workers, operate in tricky legal territory. SESTA/FOSTA (Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act and Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act), was signed into US law in 2018 to fight human trafficking, but sex workers and platforms that host their content and ads say the laws are harmful because they target the safer, online spaces where sex workers can connect with and vet clients.The law used vague language to ban "assisting" or "facilitating" human trafficking, and made websites liable when third parties use a platform to engage in human trafficking. The law has been used to take down huge online sex work platforms like <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/08/a-web-site-for-gay-escorts-gets-busted-by-homeland-security/402343/">Rentboy</a>, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-backpage-justice/sex-ads-website-backpage-shut-down-by-u-s-authorities-idUSKCN1HD2QP">Backpage</a>, and <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/03/23/596460672/craigslist-shuts-down-personals-section-after-congress-passes-bill-on-traffickin">Craiglist personals</a>. Eros uses a strict ID verification system in an apparent attempt to avoid adverse legal action, and states plainly that they "assume no responsibility or liability for any content on any of our websites." They say they have a zero-tolerance policy for prostitution or other illegal activities. A representative for Eros.com declined to comment for this article.While Eros describes itself as the "Ultimate Guide to Escorts and Erotic Entertainment," trademarked at the bottom of the page, it makes abundantly clear upon entering the site that it is not an escort agency, meaning it does not act as a middle-man between the provider and consumer. Given the demise of similar websites, it's unclear how Eros has managed to evade a similar fate, despite their explicitly hands-off approach regarding liability for what content is published on the site, like hourly and overnight rates.There is little written about Eros, save a smattering of articles detailing a <a href="https://reason.com/2017/11/13/eroscom-still-lives-but-homeland-securit/">raid on their North Carolina headquarters</a> by the Department of Homeland Security in <a href="https://reason.com/2017/11/13/eroscom-still-lives-but-homeland-securit/">2017 (before SESTA/FOSTA)</a>. According to these 2017 articles, Eros was affiliated with a company called Bolma Star Services, operating out of Youngsville, North Carolina. But the site itself lists a Luzern, Switzerland contact address. According to a source close to Eros, the company was founded in the Bay Area in the late nineties, originating in the BDSM community. The source said that the owners sold Eros because of the hostile legal environment in the US that eventually led to SESTA/FOSTA. One source close to Eros said federal agents asked questions regarding the company's finances and said they had been investigating Eros for about seven years leading up to the raid. The Departments of Justice and Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment.At the time of the raid, the company was in transition after it was sold to a European company, according to the source, and contracted the North Carolina company as a customer service call center. Prior to the sale, the source said Eros prided itself on hiring an alternative, oftentimes queer team with deep empathy for the day-to-day minutae of sex work. Sex workers who spoke with Insider said that recently the company has become far more opaque. Two escorts we spoke to said it was impossible to get a real person on the phone.NYCLU (New York Civil Liberties Union) attorney Jared Trujillo said that the increasingly mysterious approach could come back to SESTA/FOSTA. "The reason people are saying that they're hands off, that they're just a platform doing whatever, they don't want to be involved in anything, is because no one knows how broadly SESTA/FOSTA will be used," he explained. "And no one wants to be that test case."

The 2020 theme is "Made to Shine."</li></ul>People with albinism living in Africa are being blamed and persecuted for the coronavirus pandemic now hitting the continent, adding to the discrimination and stigma that already can blight their lives.So far, Africa has been the continent least affected by COVID-19. But the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this week that the pandemic is accelerating. It is more bad <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> for people with albinism, according to the United Nations that is hosting <a href="https://www.un.org/en/observances/albinism-day">International Albinism Awareness Day on June 13.</a>"There are reports of persons with albinism being branded "corona" and "COVID-19" in some countries, effectively labeling them scapegoats of the pandemic and further ostracising them in their communities," said Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in a statement.Kenyan TV has reported people with albinism having to go into hiding, and social media comments have confirmed that across Africa people with albinism are being targeted even more than in the past.Dr. Charlotte Baker, Director of the UK-based <a href="http://albinism-in-africa.com/">Albinism in Africa Network</a>, told Business Insider, that African belief systems explain people with albinism as carrying a contagious curse. COVID-19 is just another way of perpetuating this myth, she said."It is the perceived whiteness of people with albinism. It is being interpreted that they are carriers of what is seen as a white man's disease. It comes from China where people have fair skin in the African mindset and so they are seen as carriers of this disease. It's another dimension of the stigma attached to albinism," she said. These beliefs can incite brutal attacks against people with albinism. A baby born with albinism may be considered a curse and be killed, according to Dr. Baker."In African black society to have a white child born into a community is so very visibly different and people are forced to try and explain that," she said."They may accept the genetic explanation but at the same time, it is a society that has many layers of other beliefs," Dr. Baker added.Witchdoctors take advantage of the ignorance and superstitions, fuelling beliefs that people with albinism possess magical qualities or that the body parts of people with albinism used in charms and potions bring wealth, power, and good luck.These beliefs fuels a grim trade in the hair, limbs, and entire bodies of people with albinism. The oft-quoted figure for the body of a person with albinism is $75,000.Customers for these body parts are often the leading figures in African societies, said Dr. Baker.Election years are particularly unsafe for people with albinism, according to <a href="https://www.underthesamesun.com/content/issue#where-have-the-attacks-happened">Under the Same Sun,</a> an albinism advocacy group. There is an increased demand for body parts in the lead-up to elections when office-seekers are willing to pay thousands for the supposed supernatural boost to their political ambitions."They consult the witch doctor. The witch doctor says we need to you know the arm or the hair of a person with albinism," said Dr. Baker."Then there's another set of people involved in gathering those body parts and trading them. But Dr. Baker said many more attacks are suspected that go unrecorded.For example, the number of children reported to born with albinism is often less than the statistical average. This indicates that babies with albinism may have been killed at birth, said Dr. Baker.Albinism is a hereditary condition that results in a lack of pigmentation in skin, hair, and eyes. While in Europe and North America approximately 1 in 20,000 people have albinism, the rates are much higher in Africa, with about 1 in 1,400 occurrences in Tanzania and as high as 1 in 1,000 reported for select populations in Zimbabwe.In neighboring Malawi, for example, there are more than 134,000 people with albinism, representing 0.8% of the total population, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-with-albinism-issued-with-protective-alarms-in-malawi-2020-3">according to the national statistics office</a> in 2018.For some people with albinism, life is a relentless struggle of the pariah, continuously bullied, persecuted, and marginalized.And the coronavirus epidemic has only worsened their vulnerability.<h2>Without sunscreen people with albinism face early death</h2><div type="image" title="United Nations' first independent expert on albinism, Ikponwosa Ero, addresses the media in Kenya's capital Nairobi, November 16, 2016." height="1500" width="2000" msid="76360758" hostid="261"></div>Ikponwosa Ero, a UN independent expert on albinism, has warned of the COVID-19 threat. Persons with albinism and their family members, also lack access to accurate information about their condition vis-à-vis COVID-19."Access to sunscreen is a life and death issue for people with albinism. It is skin cancer, not the body parts robbers that most threaten them, said Dr. Baker."Often it's overlooked but that's the biggest threat," said Ero, also not it is not uncommon for Africans with albinism to die early, many in their forties, because they've got skin cancer after years of skin damage that's been untreated.<h2>'Made to Shine'</h2>The UN International Albinism Awareness Day is on June 13, 2020, and its theme is "Made to Shine." Whilst recognizing the human rights struggles of people with albinism worldwide, the theme was chosen to celebrate the achievements and successes of the albinism community worldwide."It emphasizes that persons with albinism were made to stand out because they are outstanding in many ways as proven by the quality and quantity of their success stories in recent years," said Ero.Dr. Baker is also hopeful that the stigma of albinism is gradually being challenged. Media coverage of the issue, NGOs and energized local groups campaigning for the rights of people with albinism and African governments more willing to grapple with albinism issues, are all causes for cautious optimism."These kinds of positive messages are really getting through now," she said.
