Thiruvananthapuram, As incessant rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued "yellow alert" warning isolated heavy rains in seven districts. Heavy rainfall was predicted in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts. Northern districts including Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are likely to witness thunderstorms, moderate rains and heavy rains in the coming hours, IMD sources said. "Yellow alert" indicates heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm. Incessant rains caused waterlogging and uprooting of trees in high ranges of Kottayam and Idukki districts. Meanwhile, shutters of Peppara Dam here were raised by 10 cm in the wake of increased water level, district authorities said. The District Collector has asked local people to be vigil as the shutters would be raised by another 10 cm later in the day, an official statement said here. Heavy rains lashed hilly areas in Kottayam on Thursday causing landslides in two places and disrupting traffic on various roads, including the one leading to the popular hill station of Vagamon in Idukki. The sudden heavy rains also led to rise in water levels of various streams and rivers, including the Meenachil river, raising concerns of a flood situation in the downstream areas, the district administration had said.

According to the team, eight out of 25 people who weretreated for COVID-19 in Ernakulam district were asymptomatic. Doctors warned that undiagnosed asymptomatic infection wasdangerous as it may cause spread of virus and complicateefforts to bring it under control.Ernakulam Government Medical College Hospital ResidentMedical Officer Dr Ganesh Mohan said the ability of the novelcoronavirus to be transmitted by persons with no symptoms wasa major factor for the its spread. Seven British nationals were treated at the hospital herefor novel coronavirus but only one among was symptomatic toCOVID-19, officials said. "Asymptomatic carrier state is dangerous because no onedoubts about such persons' health conditions. If there is anasymptomatic carrier, the patient himself will not suspectthat he is sick and he will go on with his daily activitiesand he will spread the disease", Dr Mohan told . Kochi, Apr 7 () WIth primary treatment centres,ambulances and testing facilities besides a pool of doctorsand nurses, every panchayat in Ernakulam, the industrialdistrict of Kerala, is ready to fight COVID-19    The district administration is geared up to protect itspopulation of 3.2 million from the attack of the deadly novelcoronavirus. Unveiling the plan, an official from the districtadministration on Tuesday said the healthcare institutionswhich respond to the COVID-19 emergency have been classifiedinto Plan A, B, and C. The classification is based on whether the institutionfalls under the public or private sector and also consideringthe capacity and facilities available at the institution. The district administration has converted two hospitals -the Government Medical College Hospital and PVS Hospital-into COVID care centres in the district. While the Medical College Hospital with a strengthenedICU is a 500-bed facility for managing COVID-19, PVS hospitalis equipped with 14 ventilators, 70 ICU beds and 70 singlerooms. The district administration has planned a firstlinetreatment centre at the ward-level in case if the virus casesexplode. "A primary treatment centre is a temporary facilitycreated to augment the healthcare system of the district andprovide care for 70-80 per cent of patients. This facility iscreated by converting existing facilities like communityhalls in local panchayats into treatment centres wherepatients in the locality can reach out for care," theadministration said in its plan. It says: "We have to decentralise the system and make aprimary treatment centre/first line treatment centre at award level. In every ward, there is a communityhall/auditoriums. A total of 25-bed primary treatment centrecould be set up in every ward". There are 80 items that are needed to set up a centre. "What can be taken from the field will be set up by thecommunity and other things which are mostly medical itemslike are provided by the centre. People who got coronavirusand have immunity are included as volunteers," it says. According to the plan, every panchayat needs to have anambulance and testing facility. Testing to classify personsas COVID-19 positive or not need to be done. Patients whocan't be managed at panchayat-level would be moved to thetaluk-level. The plan says a field response home care team would beset up - two per panchayat.  The team includes nurses/doctors and their major motiveis to visit people with mild symptoms, test and clinicallyassess. Since a parallel system would be created to managecoronavirus, Primary Health Centres are exempted from theclinical management of the virus and they could handleroutine primary care, it says. In the case of massive outbreak in the community-level,mobile sample collection units would be set up at the taluk-level. "Samples will be collected from every panchayat underthat taluk at previously designated points. Mobile samplecollection cabinets have been already designated," thedistrict administration says in its plan. The district administration, expecting shortage of PPEkits, has taken initiatives to locally manufacture customisedPPEs. While hand sanitisers are manufactured with the supportof CSR, cloth masks are being manufactured with the supportof the community, it says. Heavy rains likely in Kerala: IMD issues red alert in four districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and 'orange alert' in three

With a three-year-old child testing positive for the novel <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> (COVID-19) in Kerala's Kochi on Monday, the authorities have put the state on high alert as they suspect a few more cases might turn positive. The total number of positive cases have climbed to six in Kerala. The child had travelled from Italy along with parents and arrived on March 7. On arrival at the Kochi airport after preliminary checkups was placed under observation. State Health Minister K.K.Shailaja said on Monday that strong action will be taken against those who fail to abide by health advisories that were being issued. "Things were under control, but when the three from Italy who arrived failed to abide by the rules, things have reached this stage now. Everyone should abide by the rules and those who do not do, will have to face strong action," said Shailaja and added that the condition of all who are positive is under control. Things had cooled down after the first three cases in the country were reported in January, in Kerala and the health authorities had launched a massive awareness campaign, which gained the confidence of the people and till Sunday, things remained well in control. Following five cases turning positive yesterday at Pathanamthitta, the health officials managed to track down those who was in touch with the five people,(three who came from Italy last month and two of their relatives) and have asked all such people to remain indoors. "We have been able to track down and tell them how and what they should do. There need be no reason for any worries," said <keyword id="526545" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pathanamthitta-district">Pathanamthitta District</keyword> Collector P.B.Nooh. All educational institutions in the district have been closed for three days and advisories have gone that it would be better to see that even marriages that have been announced be postponed and in the best interest of all, avoid all gatherings. Likewise neighbouring Kottayam district is also on an alert as it was a family from here, who had gone to the Kochi airport to collect the three who came from Italy and now quarantined in isolation. " We have no shortage of essential items that is needed to be given to health care officials. Chugging Out To Sea: Five Coast-hugging Train Rides Along Indian Shores

The deadly landslides in Kerala's ecologically fragile Wayanad district were triggered by a heavy burst of rainfall, made 10 per cent heavier by <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword>, according to a new rapid attribution study by a global team of scientists. Researchers from India, Sweden, the US and the UK warned that such events will become more common as the climate continues to warm. To measure the impact of human-caused climate change, the scientists from the <keyword id="12008149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Weather-Attribution" source="Orion">World Weather Attribution</keyword> (WWA) group analysed climate models with high enough resolution to accurately reflect rainfall in the relatively small study area. The models indicated that the intensity of rainfall has increased by 10 per cent due to climate change, they said. The models also predict a further four per cent increase in rainfall intensity if the average <keyword id="21951013" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperature" source="keywords">global temperature</keyword> rises by two degrees Celsius compared to the 1850-1900 average. The scientists, however, said there is a "high level of uncertainty" in the model results as the study area is small and mountainous with complex rainfall-climate dynamics. Having said that, the increase in heavy one-day rainfall events aligns with a growing body of scientific evidence on extreme rainfall in a warming world, including in India, and the understanding that a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to heavier downpours. According to scientists, the atmosphere's capacity to hold moisture increases by about 7 per cent for every one-degree Celsius rise in global temperature. The Earth's global surface temperature has already increased by around 1.3 degrees Celsius due to the rapidly rising concentration of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and methane. Scientists say this is the reason behind worsening <keyword id="19912530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-weather-events" source="keywords">extreme weather events</keyword>, such as droughts, heat waves and floods worldwide. The WWA scientists said that while the relationship between land cover, land use changes and landslide risk in Wayanad is not fully clear from existing studies, factors, such as quarrying for building materials and a 62 per cent reduction in forest cover may have increased the slopes' susceptibility to landslides during heavy rainfall. Other researchers have also linked the <keyword id="22597176" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wayanad-landslides" source="keywords">Wayanad landslides</keyword> to a combination of forest cover loss, mining in fragile terrain and prolonged rain followed by heavy precipitation. S Abhilash, the director of the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), had earlier told PTI that the warming of the Arabian Sea is leading to the formation of deep cloud systems, resulting in extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala in a short period and increasing the risk of landslides. "Our research found that the southeast Arabian Sea is becoming warmer, causing the atmosphere above Kerala to become thermodynamically unstable. This instability is allowing the formation of deep clouds," he had said. According to the landslide atlas released by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre last year, 10 out of the top 30 landslide-prone districts in India are in Kerala, with Wayanad ranked at the 13th spot. A study published by Springer in 2021 said all landslide hotspots in Kerala are in the Western Ghats region and are concentrated in Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. It said about 59 per cent of total landslides in Kerala have occurred in plantation areas. A 2022 study on depleting forest cover in Wayanad showed that 62 per cent of forests in the district disappeared between 1950 and 2018, while plantation cover rose by around 1,800 per cent.

These tier II &amp; III cities included Coimbatore, Guwahati, Indore, Nagpur, Lucknow, Jaipur, Rajpura, <keyword id="50863" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bhubaneswar" source="Orion">Bhubaneswar</keyword>, Kochi/Ernakulam, Madurai, <keyword id="6357203" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="varanasi" source="Orion">Varanasi</keyword>, Hubli, Ludhiana, Patna and Hosur. Among the major cities in India, Delhi-NCR led the pack with the highest industrial and warehouse land absorption in 2022 at 16% followed by Mumbai at 14%. Pune and Bengaluru saw absorptions at 13% and 12% respectively, while tier II and tier III cities accounted for 22%, Savills shared. The sectors that drove the absorption in 2022 were 3PL and ecommerce (52%); followed by manufacturing (16%) and retail sectors (13%). Increased demand in 2023 As per Savills, the industrial and warehousing market in India witnessed transactions of 3,800 plus acres of land across tier I, II and III cities in 2022, of which 64% was private land and 36% was government land. The warehousing sector in India also raised private equity to the tune of $1.5 billion in 2022. The interest in the market is expected to grow further in the future. “The market is likely to witness increased interest from investors in this asset class in 2023 owing to inherent domestic demand and expansion of distribution networks in tier II and tier III cities,” Savills said in a statement. As per Savills, tier II and III cities are poised to gain further momentum in 2023 and 2024 with ecommerce, retail and 3PL firms capitalizing on consumption-driven growth and pushing up the demand for warehousing space. As per the <keyword id="2646256" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="unicommerce" source="Orion">Unicommerce</keyword> 2022 report, more than 6 out of 10 orders shipped in 2022 went to buyers in tier II cities, and orders from tier III cities have also surged 65% since 2020. “The industrial and logistics sector is likely to see absorption of over 40 mn sq. ft in 2023. Tier II & III cities see 17.4% growth in industrial and warehousing absorption: Savills

Scientist S. Somanath is all set to take over as the new Chairman of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/interview-these-former-isro-scientists-are-hoping-for-the-biggest-ever-funding-in-the-indian-spacetech-industry/articleshow/87911503.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Indian Space Research Organisation</a> (ISRO), succeeding K. Sivan. Somanath, who is currently Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in the Kerala state capital, will be fourth Keralite to occupy the topmost post in the Indian space sector. The previous Malayalees who have held the top post are K. Kasturirangan, G. Madhavan Nair, and K. Radhakrishnan. Sivan was given a year's extension and his term is set to end very soon and Somnath's name was cleared for the top office way back in 2019 itself, by virtue of his seniority in the ISRO hierarchy. Somanath completed his Pre Degree from the Maharaja's College, Ernakulam and did mechanical engineering from the TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, near here and in 1985 joined the VSSC centre here and has had no reason to look back after that. He later did his Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with specialisation in Dynamics and Control. At the ISRO, he has been associated with the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) Project during its initial phase. Later he became the Associate Director (Projects) of the VSSC and also the Project Director of the GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle in 2010. He was also the Deputy Director of Propulsion and Space Ordinance Entity till November 2014. In June 2015, he took over as Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) at Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, and served there until January 2018. Somanath then took over as Director of VSSC from Sivan who became Chairman of the ISRO and now he is all set to succeed him in the top post too.

Often referred to as the 'Iron Lady in <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> politics, legendary Communist K.R. Gouri passed away at a private hospital here on Tuesday, said family sources. Gowri was 102-year-old and was admitted to a hospital here for the treatment of her age-related ailments. She was a member of the world's first democratically elected Communist government cabinet led by Communist legend E.M.S. Nampoothiripad in 1957. Starting from the first Kerala Legislative Assembly till 1977, when she lost the elections, only to win it back at the next elections and then till 2006 was a legislator. One of the achievements of her's was, she piloted the revolutionary Land Reform Bill of the first Communist government. In her long career she was a State Minister for 16 years in six cabinets of both the Communists and the <keyword id="1575" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>. In 1994, she was booted out of the CPI-M and she formed her own party- JSS and was with the Congress led <keyword id="6361745" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="udf">UDF</keyword>, until 2006, after which her party suffered splits and went into oblivion. Born at Pattanakadu near Alappuzha, Gowri completed her graduation from Maharaja's College, Ernakulam and later received a Law degree from Government Law College at Ernakulam. Gouri's chequered political career began with her election to the Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly in 1952 and 1954. In 1957 she was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly and became the Revenue Minister in the first Communist ministry. In the very same year she married T.V.
