However, she's returned to the spotlight to weigh in on the work/life balance debate reignited by the release of Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg's book, "<keyword id="1570360" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lean-in">Lean In</keyword>."
Callan wrote an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/opinion/sunday/is-there-life-after-work.html">op-ed in The New York Times</a> and appeared in <a href="http://rockcenter.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/15/17301962-former-lehman-cfo-erin-callan-dont-do-it-like-me?lite&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter">an interview of "Rock Center."</a>

She resurfaced again this week with a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/opinion/sunday/is-there-life-after-work.html?ref=opinion&amp;_r=3&amp;">really gutsy op-ed in The New York Times</a> about the big work/life balance debate that has been reignited following Facebook executive <keyword id="611995" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sheryl-Sandberg">Sheryl Sandberg</keyword>'s new book, "<keyword id="1570360" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lean-in">Lean In</keyword>." 
The former "well-heeled" Wall Street exec did a big television <a href="http://rockcenter.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/15/17301962-former-lehman-cfo-erin-callan-don't-do-it-like-me?lite">interview with Ann Curry on "Rock Center" with Brian Williams that aired Friday night.</a> 
Callan wanted to provide her own perspective on the "Lean In" concept and use her experience as a "cautionary tale." 
"I wanted to be a little bit of sort of a cautionary tale," she said in an interview with Curry. "You can achieve. You can accomplish. You can have an amazing career with great success even in a male-dominated field like I did, but be careful what you wish for and the choices that you make." 
She went on to explain that she leaned in really far on Wall Street and that wasn't the best thing.
"I leaned in far, very far," she said, adding, "Don't do it like me. I don't think the way I was doing it was the healthiest, happiest way to do it." 
She explained that she was intense about the things she did in her life. She grew up a competitive gymnast in Queens and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. 
Callan eventually worked her way up the ranks on Wall Street to become the first female CFO at Lehman. 
While on the Street, she said that she was constantly on her Blackberry, checking Asian markets before going to bed and making herself completely available even if that meant hopping on a last minute flight to Europe for work. 
This, she said, became the "new normal" for her, causing her to miss out on important events such as birthdays and relationships with friends and family. She also acknowledged that she wasn't spending enough time with her first husband. 
Curry asked her if she realized what was happening. 
"I'm not sure I was consciously willing to admit it," Callan responded.
 In her op-ed, one of the things Callan talked about is missing out on having children.
"I didn't have children. But there was no conscious moment where I woke up and said I don't think I want to have kids because it was important to me," she said.
Now at age 47, Callan and her new husband, high school classmate/firefighter Anthony Montella, are trying with in vitro fertilization. 
So her takeaway for women is to "lean back if it feels right." She basically said to lean in if that's what feels right, but if you don't that's okay, too. 
"It's up to you. It's your choice. Follow your heart. Follow your passion. If you want to break the glass ceiling like I did, go for it."
Callan does believe she could have gotten to the C-suite still with some changes or tweaks. 
"I really do believe there's that extra hour ... that extra thing that really is diminishing returns to your labor over time." 
She said that applies to men and women. 
"The demands that it places on you. It's hard to create boundaries with respect to those demands. I don't think that's a woman issue." 
Despite what people may have concluded from her op-ed, Callan said that she has found love and peace in her new low key life in Florida.
"I don't wake up everyday with the anxiety of doing the next big thing. I'm okay with who I am."

ERIN CALLAN: I Want To Be A Cautionary Tale - Don't 'Lean In' The Way I Did

She's back though.
Tonight, Callan will be featured on <a href="http://rockcenter.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/15/17301962-former-lehman-cfo-erin-callan-dont-do-it-like-me?lite">"Rock Center With Brian Williams"</a> in an interview/full profile with Ann Curry.
Earlier this week, Callan published a really gutsy <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/opinion/sunday/is-there-life-after-work.html?ref=opinion&amp;_r=2&amp;">opinion piece in the New York Times</a> this week about the whole work/life balance debate that's being going on since Sheryl Sandberg released her book "Lean In". 
In her op-ed piece, Callan talked about how she worked insane hours on Wall Street and put her career ahead of her family, friends and first husband. Callan, who now has a new husband and lives in a modest house in Florida, talked about not having kids. At 47, she said she's still trying in vitro fertilization.
"I leaned in far. Very far," she told Curry on NBC's "Rock Center".
Callan explained to Curry that some people took away from the op-ed piece that she was sad and unhappy. She said that she doesn't regret the life she has lived. 
"I got to live an amazing life. I'm still living an amazing life." 
Curry asked her if she thought she could have been CFO if she was a mother. 
"I might have been asked to be CFO. I don't know if I could have actually been the CFO. It's an important distinction. Certainly not through the chaotic period I was CFO, but I think I could have been asked based on being able to manage prior jobs and performance up until then," she said.

She's living proof of why people need to protect their work-life balance.
Callan was once <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/mar/19/lehmans-erin-callan-glass-cliff">one of Wall Street's most powerful women</a> before being forced out of her job and Lehman collapsed in 2008. She says she went about achieving <keyword id="21796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="success">success</keyword> all wrong, and "Inevitably, when I left my job, it devastated me. I couldn’t just rally and move on. I did not know how to value who I was versus what I did. What I did was who I was."
When she was CFO, Callan was a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121098034130400069.html">fixture in the media</a> for overcoming gender barriers on Wall Street, but she says that it wasn't worth it in the end: 
"I have often wondered whether I would have been asked to be C.F.O. if I had not worked the way that I did. Until recently, I thought my singular focus on my career was the most powerful ingredient in my success. But I am beginning to realize that I sold myself short. I was talented, intelligent and energetic. It didn’t have to be so extreme. Besides, there were diminishing returns to that kind of labor."
Other professionals have come to the same conclusion.
A few months ago, famous advertising executive <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/its-not-worth-it-linds-reddings-short-lesson-in-perspective-2012-11">Linds Redding wrote a chilling account of the toll his work took on his life</a> on his death bed: "So was it worth it? Well of course not. It turns out it was just advertising. There was no higher calling."
Which brings up a crucial point. There's nothing wrong with pure ambition, and there are certainly times in life to put in more hours than others. But throughout, it's important not to neglect things that will keep you healthy and sustain you later in life.
In his book, "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/clay-christensen-how-will-you-measure-your-life-2012-5">How Will You Measure Your Life?</a>" business guru Clay Christensen says that too often, people prioritize work above all else early in their <keyword id="6354910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Careers">careers</keyword>, with plans to focus on family and their health later. But by then, he argues, it's already too late. 
Hitting this balance is a huge struggle. Facebook COO <keyword id="611995" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sheryl-Sandberg">Sheryl Sandberg</keyword> famously leaves the office at 5:30 PM, and other executives like Richard Branson have spoken about how important it is to find meaning in your work, and also have a life outside of work. Research shows that <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/04/opinion/sunday/do-happier-people-work-harder.html">happier employees are more productive employees</a>.
But at the end of the day, you've got to make the decision for yourself, and work at a place where your <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/workplace-culture-is-important-2013-1">personal values align with your company's values</a>.

In it, the former "well-heeled" Wall Street exec sounds extremely remorseful about working all those crazy hours and putting her career ahead of her family, friends, and first husband.
Callan, who now has step children and a new husband, also writes about wishing she had children of her own. She says at age 47 she and her husband are still trying in vitro fertilization. 
Post-Lehman she seems to have come to the realization that she didn't have to work the extreme way she did to become CFO.

I didn’t have to be on my BlackBerry from my first moment in the morning to my last moment at night. I didn’t have to eat the majority of my meals at my desk. I didn’t have to fly overnight to a meeting in Europe on my birthday. I now believe that I could have made it to a similar place with at least some better version of a personal life. Not without sacrifice — I don’t think I could have “had it all” — but with somewhat more harmony.
These days, she writes, that she's "only learning how to manage a life."
