New Delhi, Mar 6 () Epsilon Carbon on Friday said it will set up an integrated carbon black facility at Bellary in Karnataka at a total investment of Rs 900 crore. The coal tar derivatives company said the first phase of the project will be commissioned by the third quarter of the next fiscal. "This Integrated Carbon Black Complex will be the first of its kind manufacturing facility in India using waste Coke Oven Gas from a steel plant as a fuel making this an environment-friendly set up with lower CO2 footprint," the company said in a statement. Currently, Epsilon Carbon operates a 220,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) coal tar distillation facility that caters to 40 per cent of the pitch demand in the aluminum industry. The first phase of the new integrated carbon black facility is expected to be commissioned by Q3 FY21 with an initial capacity of 115,000 TPA, it said. "The company will further expand the overall capacity of this Integrated Carbon Black Facility to over 300,000 TPA by FY24. Epsilon Carbon is investing a total of Rs 900 crores across both project phases to establish the integrated carbon black facility," it added. The company's Managing Director Vikram Handa said, "Our core advantage in the Indian Carbon Black sector is the security of raw material we provide to our customers. This encourages us to plan our future expansions to offer stable long-term supplies to our customers." Globally, the tyre industry is a leading consumer of carbon black products. It is used as a reinforcing filler to improve the longevity of tyres. Hence, carbon black gets approximately 93 per cent of its total volume demand from the rubber related industries, the statement said. Moreover, carbon black is used as a black pigment in printing inks, paints, varnishes for dyeing and for UV protection of plastics as well as in speciality products such as decor paper and fibres. And the move is already sending ripples through the industry.Under the pending deal, Publicis' agencies - which include Starcom, SapientRazorfish and BBH - will gain access to Epsilon's database of 250 million US consumers. Epsilon helps marketers collect and manage first-party data like CRM stats pulled from email and loyalty programs. The firm also layers third-party data like transactional and behavioral stats on top of first-party data to create audience segments, and the company's ad-tech arm Conversant takes the data to run ads.As Facebook and Google continue to gobble up digital ad dollars, agencies are under increasing pressure to build out data practices that help marketers manage data. For years, brands relied on third-party data to create big audiences for targeting, but scrutiny and regulation like the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the upcoming California Consumer Privacy Act <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/liveramp-acquires-faktor-to-prepare-for-privacy-regulations-like-the-ccpa-2019-4">have put more emphasis on first-party data.</a>"Marketers have been told for the last 10 years that first-party data is gold - the gap was always the ability to do something with it," said Mark Wagman, managing director of MediaLink. "This is a bit of a Swiss Army knife - it's got the underlying tools that Publicis can build on top of."Several sources said that while the Publicis acquisition makes sense, it's notoriously difficult for agencies to integrate acquisitions. In 2014, Publicis acquired Sapient for $3.7 billion and <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/publicis-books-heavy-writedown-on-digital-business-1486621800">wrote down half</a> of its valuation in 2016."Sapient is a brilliant acquisition that is today delivering very strong results, but it has taken time and has been a challenge to integrate," CEO Arthur Sadoun said during a call with investors on Monday.Others were skeptical about Publicis' ability to turn Epsilon into a game changer in marketing data."A fair question to ask is what is the product that Publicis is planning to assemble here, and what is the value add given that much of the technology can be considered a commodity," Ana Milicevic, principal and cofounder of Sparrow Advisers, a management consultancy focused on advertising and marketing, said. "How does this create a true competitive edge for Publicis clients?"<h2>Betting big on data</h2>Publicis isn't the only holding company betting big on data through acquisitions. Interpublic Group <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-business-model-for-giant-ad-agencies-is-under-fire-but-ipg-says-its-23-billion-bet-on-acxiom-gives-it-a-massive-advantage-over-other-firms-2018-7">acquired Acxiom Marketing Solutions</a> for $2.3 billion last year, and Dentsu purchased Merkle in 2016. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/omnicom-is-betting-that-the-future-of-agencies-relies-on-building-its-own-data-expertise-2018-7">Omnicom</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/groupm-creates-mplatform-division-2016-11">WPP</a> have also spun out practices to specifically handle data.One of advertisers' biggest concerns with regulation is that Facebook and Google have an unfair advantage because they have huge databases of consumers who have opted in to share their data when setting up an account. Publicis' and IPG's acquisitions could create a more "level playing field" for brands and publishers, Frank said."Marketers are going to discover that they need help with data and that this something that agencies are well-positioned to do," said Andrew Frank, an analyst at Gartner Marketing Leaders. "A lot of data providers don't have the kind of service and account level that agencies can bring to the table.""If you're a major holding company today, you've got to get as close as you can to your customer and give them a reason not to run a review every three years," Wagman said. "The marketplace for third-party data is like walking the halls of a Target - there are hundreds of different providers [and] you don't know what you're buying," he said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A University of Miami frat was shut down after a video leaked of members reciting a misogynist chant.</li><li>The video shows Sigma Phi Epsilon members chanting a sexist song laden with themes of necrophilia.</li></ul>A University of Miami fraternity was shut down earlier this month after a leaked video showed men chanting about having sex with a dead woman.But the organization's alleged transgressions go beyond the misogynist chant, according to three women who told Insider that they believe the fraternity was also serving drugged drinks at a party earlier this month.Members of Sigma Phi Epsilon were recorded reciting the sexually violent chant ahead of the raucous pool party that sparked additional, unconfirmed allegations of drugged drinks. Video taken before the October 1 party shows dozens of young men jumping up and down as they chant a song laden with themes of necrophilia."We dig her up every now and then, we fucked her once and we'll fuck her again!" the men can be heard chanting in a video reviewed by Insider. "Get in, get out, quit fuckin' about!"Current students told Insider the video quickly made the rounds around campus. The university's student newspaper, <a href="https://www.themiamihurricane.com/2022/10/09/drugging-allegations-misogynistic-chanting-sigep-chapter-closes-immediately/">The Miami Hurricane</a>, was the first to report the news of the fraternity's suspension. According to the Hurricane, the song also includes a line about keeping the victim in a wooden box.One woman who spoke to Insider on the condition of anonymity said when she saw the video, she was disgusted."How do you mosh to chanting about raping women?" she said.A spokesperson for Sigma Phi Epsilon's national board of directors told Insider the governing body unanimously voted to revoke the Miami chapter's charter less than a week after the party. The spokesperson cited video of the chant, saying the national headquarters received a copy of the footage, which showed members of the fraternity engaging in "misogynist actions" not aligned with the fraternity's values."We expect SigEp chapters to provide their members and campus community a safe and supportive environment," SigEp communications officer Heather Matthews said. "That's the cornerstone of a positive Fraternity and university experience, so we take that expectation seriously and hold our chapters to that standard."The University of Miami administration did not respond to Insider's numerous requests for comment, nor did the president of the school's SigEp chapter.Jacqueline Menendez, a UM spokeswoman said the university was conducting an investigation in an email to The Miami Herald."University staff members have met with student groups throughout the week to address their concerns, and are encouraging students to report any additional information regarding this event, as we continue our investigation," she said to the Herald.Video of the chant and the fraternity's subsequent expulsion stirred buzz across campus, students told Insider. But the organization's alleged transgressions don't stop there, according to three female partygoers who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution by members of the fraternity. All three womens' identities are known by Insider.<h2>Allegations of white powder in mixed drinks</h2>Sigma Phi Epsilon's annual pool party is the group's biggest event of the year, according to one of the students. This year's event was scheduled for Saturday, October 1, and was located at an off-campus house in Coral Gables, partygoers said. A flier obtained by Insider advertising the "Adult Swim" themed party described the event as "Disneyland for degenerates" and boasted a foam pit, bouncy slide, and professional DJ on site. A female student who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution by members of the fraternity told Insider she and a group of friends arrived at the party about an hour after it started.The student said she almost never gets mixed drinks at frat parties, preferring instead to drink canned seltzers that she's bought herself. But the group wasn't planning on staying very long, so they approached the bar to grab some liquor. She told Insider she watched carefully as members of the fraternity made their drinks, turning away only for a couple of seconds before grabbing the cups and taking a few sips.But moments later she said one of her friends noticed a white powder floating at the top of her drink. She took a video of the drink, which Insider has reviewed and which clearly shows a visible white substance.Insider could not confirm what the white powder was, but some common "date rape" drugs, including <a href="https://www.dea.gov/factsheets/ghb-gamma-hydroxybutyric-acid">GHB</a> and <a href="https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2020-06/Ketamine-2020.pdf">Ketamine</a>, can come as a white powder, among other forms. <div type="image" title="A white substance in an attendees drink at the &quot;Adult Swim&quot; party on October 1st." height="600" width="800" msid="95036530" hostid="261"></div>The women quickly tossed their drinks and decided to leave the party, but not before warning some of their friends who were in attendance. The two other partygoers Insider spoke with and also wished to remain anonymous, said that the woman who took the video approached them and said she believed her friend's drink had been drugged.The student who originally took the video of her friend's drink told Insider that she became exceedingly drunk in the hours after leaving the party. She'd had only one seltzer and a couple of sips of her friend's drink, she said, but spent the night feeling close to blacked out. She told Insider she believes she and her friend were drugged at the party. Members of the SigEP chapter did not respond to Insider's questions about the video or the allegations about drink spiking.The students who spoke to Insider were not the only ones who were allegedly drugged at the party. Two young women named Abby and Mary spoke to the Miami Hurricane and recounted similar stories of seeing white powder in drinks. Both women told the outlet they also began to hear similar stories from their sorority sisters who attended the event and described instances of partygoers afflicted by uncontrollable vomiting or an inability to stay awake.The Miami Herald <a href="https://account.miamiherald.com/paywall/stop?resume=267198177#storylink=mainstage_card">reported</a> that mentions of white powder could have come from sandbags that were used to secure tent poles for a volleyball court. "Repeating this chant was wholly inappropriate, reprehensible, and does not represent who we are. We apologize in the strongest possible terms to anyone hurt by the lyrics or our actions."After the University of Miami chapter closed, its website was also shut down. According to an archived web page viewed by Insider, in 1991, the fraternity implemented a continuous development program called the <a href="https://sigep.org/the-sigep-experience/programs/balanced-man-program/">"Balanced Man Program"</a> which promotes a lifestyle based on three principles; virtue, diligence, and brotherly love.This isn't the first time a SigEp chapter has been shut down. Some marketers are also scrambling to change their messaging in light of stock shortages.Every agency staffer I've spoken with this week has told me that planning and forecasting have never been harder.The holiday ad season is likely to look very different from typical years, Mindshare UK CEO Jem Lloyd-Williams told me."Supply-chain issues may mean you have fewer people advertising - who haven't got stuff on the shelves, or don't think it's the right thing to do - it may be less cacophonous," he said.Still, he added, for many advertisers, such as automakers, there's an opportunity to double down on advertising designed to build brand awareness and preference, rather than promoting specific products."When everyone else is pulling out of the market, you get a higher share of voice," Lloyd-Williams said.<h3>Shawty got low, low, low, low, low, low, low, Lowe's</h3><div type="image" title="lowe's employee" height="1416" width="1999" msid="87018664" hostid="261"></div>Continuing the trend that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recent-advertising-hires-by-companies-like-instacart-and-home-depot-2021-7?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">every business becomes an ads business eventually</a>, the home retailer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lowes-launching-ad-business-to-compete-with-amazon-home-depot-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Lowe's is the latest retailer to get in on the act</a>, Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/tanya-dua?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Tanya Dua</a> reports.Its new advertising arm, Lowe's One Roof Media Network, offers ads across its website and app. Lowe's is also offering its first-party data for advertisers to target their digital ads outside its properties.Access to lucrative first-party shopping data in a destination where people are just about to make a purchase is key to all the latest retail-media plays.Take <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doordash-launches-advertising-business-to-take-on-uber-instacart-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">DoorDash, which this week formally launched an ad business</a>, Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/lauren-johnson">Lauren Johnson</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/nancy-luna">Nancy Luna</a> reported.<keyword id="11931723" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="doordash" source="Orion">DoorDash</keyword> is pitching advertisers on data about its 20 million monthly users like what restaurants people order from and whether they are a first-time or repeat DoorDash user. One interesting aspect to the offer: A small-business owner can pay less to advertise to a consumer who prefers buying from such small businesses, while chains will pay more to reach the same person.<h3>Hanging on the telephone</h3><div type="image" title="women using smartphone" height="2688" width="4032" msid="87018666" hostid="261"></div>"<a href="https://www.slideshare.net/a16z/mobile-is-eating-the-world-40841467">Mobile is eating the world</a>," the former Andreessen Horowitz analyst Benedict Evans presciently said many moons ago.The sentiment continues into 2021. Mobile adtech companies have been among the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/experts-pick-7-mobile-ad-firms-as-acquisition-targets-2021-2021-4?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">most active advertising dealmakers this year</a> amid the continued growth in mobile-ad spending as well as Apple's recent privacy changes that limit tracking.The latest such deal: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inmobi-will-buy-analytics-firm-appsumer-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">InMobi on Wednesday said it was acquiring the European mobile-analytics company Appsumer</a>, Insider's Ryan Joe reported. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed."Local advertising" - ads specifically targeting local and regional markets - is also going mobile. Spending on digital ads overtook traditional media like print and broadcast TV for the first time in the culmination of a yearslong trend as Google, Facebook, and now Amazon command an ever-larger share of big brands' budgets.Mergers and acquisitions continued apace. Most prominent were the consulting firm Accenture buying creative agency Droga5 for about $450 million and holding company Publicis Groupe paying $4.4 billion for data management firm Epsilon.WPP still dominates the ad world as the biggest holding company, and that scale brings attendant challenges: The company's stock has lost about 45% of its value since its all-time high in 2015.CEO Mark Read took a number of significant steps over the past 12 months that offer an overview of the ad industry's ongoing evolution as his three-year plan to streamline the sprawling global network takes shape.He restructured the company's most valuable property: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wpp-reshaping-groupm-in-the-image-of-google-agency-essence-2019-11">WPP just announced a big shake-up at its giant ad-buying network, GroupM</a>Read shook up WPP's most important network, GroupM, in July by promoting Christian Juhl to global CEO; Juhl previously led Essence, which buys digital ads for Google. In early November, Business Insider broke the news that GroupM North American CEO Tim Castree <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ceo-of-wpps-groupm-north-america-leaves-after-one-year-2019-11">had left after less than a year</a>, and sources attributed his departure to the company's struggles in its largest market.Later that month, Juhl named four new executives and merged GroupM's ad tech and software divisions, mPlatform and 2Sixty, in another attempt to streamline operations. Essence had long outperformed other WPP companies, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wpp-reshaping-groupm-in-the-image-of-google-agency-essence-2019-11">a source told Business Insider</a> that Juhl aims to remake GroupM in its image. More mergers and agency closures in North America: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wpp-wunderman-thompson-will-absorb-several-additional-agencies-2019-11">Ad holding company WPP is continuing its consolidation spree with the Wunderman Thompson network absorbing 3 more agencies</a>The most visible element of Read's streamlining strategy has involved hybrid mergers of digital and traditional agencies: In late 2018, VML and Y&amp;R combined to form VMLY&amp;R, and Wunderman and J. Walter Thompson became Wunderman Thompson.That trend continued throughout this year. In November, Business Insider broke the news that Wunderman Thompson would absorb three additional agencies. About one month later, WPP <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wpp-consolidation-shut-down-istrategylabs-jwt-inside-2019-12">confirmed that it would close</a> one of those agencies, iStrategyLabs, along with a division of Wunderman Thompson called JWT Inside that created recruiting campaigns for the US State Department and T-Mobile. The two organizations employed around 60 people, but their revenues had declined in recent years.Shedding "non-core" assets and suing to recoup lost investments: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wpp-lawsuit-claims-former-walmart-agency-inflated-value-120-million-2019-11">A lawsuit over an agency that allegedly inflated its worth by $120 million reveals Walmart's earlier struggle to build an ad business</a>Most holding companies have spent billions to acquire data capabilities in recent years, but WPP went in the opposite direction in 2019 by aggressively shedding "non-core" assets like sports-focused marketing firms Chime and Two Circles. The most prominent divestiture was Kantar, an assortment of research, insights, and consulting businesses founded in 1992. WPP sold a majority stake in Kantar to Bain Capital Private Equity in a deal that closed this month and valued Kantar at $4 billion.In another sign of financial crackdown, WPP <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wpp-lawsuit-claims-former-walmart-agency-inflated-value-120-million-2019-11">filed a lawsuit</a> alleging that Triad Retail Media, an agency acquired in 2016, had inflated its own value by more than $120 million.Looking for new revenue streams: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ad-holding-companies-are-developing-onsite-units-to-stay-competitive-2019-11">Ad agency giants WPP and Dentsu are fighting in-housing - by helping brands adopt the trend</a> In 2019, WPP made the seemingly counterintuitive decision to more aggressively promote a service called Wunderman Inside that helps clients do more of their marketing work internally. It also awarded its advertising business to holding company rivals Omnicom and Publicis Groupe after a five-month review.These developments followed heated disputes between Disney and its chief streaming rivals. Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Disney <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/disney-bans-netflix-ads-as-streamings-marketing-wars-intensify-11570199291">banned ads for Netflix</a> on its properties and <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-disney-fight-over-ad-revenue-from-apps-on-fire-tv-11570117659">resisted Amazon's attempts to sell ad space</a> on Disney-branded Fire TV apps.Read more: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-plus-has-edge-on-apple-tv-plus-hbo-max-2019-10">Exclusive data shows how much buzz Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, and HBO Max have built with streaming users before launch</a><h2>Disney's most important product moving forward will be digital subscriptions</h2>The review shows Disney is pushing into performance-based marketing and selling subscriptions directly to consumers because it sees them as the future of its media business, people involved in the review told Business Insider.During August's <a href="https://www.thewaltdisneycompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/q3-fy19-earnings-transcript.pdf">Q3 earnings call</a>, Disney CEO and chairman Robert Iger called Disney+ "the most important product that the company has launched ... certainly during my tenure in the job."Iger acknowledged that Disney+ would lag far behind Netflix in terms of original content but said it would rely on the strength of brands like Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar.In the review, Publicis won responsibility for marketing parks and Disney+ in the U.S. while Omnicom retained Disney's film studio work and picked up traditional media outlets including the Disney Channel, ABC, FX, and Nat Geo. ESPN will stay with Publicis, which also won additional work in Latin America, Asia, and the region comprising Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.Two people close to the review said one key reason Disney awarded the Disney+ advertising to Publicis is because Apple, its big streaming rival, has a more than 30-year relationship with Omnicom. Another source said fellow holding company WPP also sat out the global review due to a potential conflict with client Comcast and only pitched in India, where it retained Disney's business. (Publicis also has Comcast-owned NBCUniversal as a client.)<h2>Source: Disney to spend about $375 million to promote Disney+</h2>In another sign of Disney's attempts to distance itself from rivals, Iger last month stepped down from Apple's board of directors, the same day Tim Cook announced that Apple's own streaming service would premiere in November, which is two weeks before Disney+ is set to go live.A party with direct knowledge of Disney's marketing budget said the company would spend about $375 million to promote Disney+ in the next 12 months. By contrast, Disney parks spends just under $600 million on marketing annually.Multiple parties confirmed that Disney's in-house team manages just under half of that $600 million, including programmatic and digital buys. But Publicis could play an advisory role. Its CEO Arthur Sadoun said an internal memo that Epsilon, the data firm it acquired earlier this year for $4.4 billion, played a key role in the review along with media agency Zenith. One person familiar with the review said Disney, like most major marketers, has shifted to the performance-based marketing embraced by smaller DTC brands. Sources also said saving money was Disney's top concern.This was not surprising since in March, Disney acquired 21st Century Fox Inc., a deal that involved specific cost savings promises. Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-20/disney-closes-fox-deal-now-come-thousands-of-pink-slips">reported at the time</a> that these cuts would lead to "thousands of firings in the film and TV business."<h2>Disney wants to consolidate media operations around the world</h2>Two other sources said Disney was also interested in the holding companies' ability to coordinate their operations globally. One company said the pitch involved 400 employees in eight offices across four continents.Spokespeople for Omnicom and Publicis deferred to the client for comment. Consultancy Medialink, which oversaw the review, declined to comment, as did WPP. Karen Hobson, head of communications for Disney's DTC and international business divisions, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.International research company Comvergence placed Disney's annual paid media spend at around $1.5 billion, while two other sources involved in the review said it was closer to $2.2 billion.Intelligence firm Kantar Media said Disney's 2018 U.S. marketing budget is made up of $668 million on feature films, $258 million on media networks such as ABC and ESPN, $188 million on DTC, $153 million on parks, and $27 million on consumer products.
