<br /> Strict, number-crunching and process-driven. These are just some of the phrases that spring to mind when we think about a stereotypical <keyword id="53346" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CFO">CFO</keyword>. But in today’s fast-paced business world, the CFO working style is in fact varied and fascinating. This is a stereotype that’s long overdue a refresh. Let’s take a typical scenario as an example. <br /><br />

	Imagine a CFO sat at his desk, squinting at the computer screen as he concentrates on financial performance for one quarter, and cross-references it carefully with planning for the next quarter. Someone comes into his office and says he’s found a great new business proposition – an opening in a new market – and he thinks the business will grow rapidly if it invests. The CFO, who’s just finalised his planning, looks up from his work to consider the proposition. At this point in the story, the working style of the CFO - stereotypical or not - affects whether the business explores this new opportunity. 
<br /><br />

	To keep a business moving, CFOs are required to provide other members of the C-suite with vital insight at the drop of a hat. Their systems have the potential to facilitate (or hold back) plans, allow (or slow down) the analysis of business data, and arm their peers with the information they need to make the right business decisions (or not).The CFO’s working style dramatically affects the speed, flexibility and insight with which the business is able to do this. 
<br /><br />

	Epicor recently commissioned Redshift Research to question around 1,500 financial decision makers from across the globe about how they work. We discovered six groups of financial decision makers : over a quarter of CFOs were classed as politicians (27%), a fifth were revolutionaries (20%), 18 per cent were carers, 17 per cent were conductors and one in ten (9%) were classed as visionaries. 
<br /><br />

	An additional one in ten (9%) CFOs were categorised as traditionalists. Research shows these CFOs are strong when working within existing agreed systems and processes but can be bureaucratic. They are also the least likely CFOs to acknowledge any need for change – only 14 per cent believe their systems should be updated compared to the average of 32 per cent. It perhaps comes as no surprise then, that in the same research these CFOs were found to be less likely to experience profit growth than their more innovative, less traditional counterparts (56% compared to the average of 64% of their peers).In our scenario, these CFOs would slow down the business’s ability to explore the new proposition; sending his colleague out of the door.
<br /><br /> The opposite of the traditional stereotype are the revolutionary CFOs who are charismatic by nature and not afraid to think outside the box. In our scenario, if the CFO is a revolutionary, they will be happy to take a less structured approach and work outside of formal systems and processes to make the new business opportunity possible. These CFOs are risk-takers – 58 per cent of revolutionaries will make decisions based on instinct if they don’t have the <keyword id="822063" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="empirical">empirical</keyword> data they need. Their drive and innovative attitude make the revolutionary the most likely CFO group to facilitate business growth - in our research nearly three-quarters of revolutionary CFOs (72%) had experienced profit increase. <br /><br />

	Although revolutionaries are powerful working styles, in our survey, CFOs most commonly fall under the category of politician (27%). These are more cautious leaders, with a methodical team-based approach. They like to consult widely and build consensus before making important decisions. In fact, 27 per cent of these CFOs believe collaboration is a challenge that needs addressing. 
<br /><br />

	By contrast, conductor CFOs have a tendency to make decisions alone. They are strong defenders of corporate culture but are more likely than average (54% compared to 46% of their peers) to make decisions based on gut-feel rather than hard data. In our scenario, this could easily lead to fast-paced work but the potential of mistakes is increased.
<br /><br />

	Carers on the other hand might miss the new business opportunity all together – they are cautious CFOs and 52 per cent of them worry about a lack of accurate data when making decisions. 
<br /><br />

	Visionaries however, are unlike their carer colleagues. These creative CFOs gloss over details when exploring a new business proposition – perhaps because a quarter of them (23%) are worried about not having the time or resources to produce meaningful insight.
<br /><br />

	Considering the CFO stereotype, we can be forgiven for expecting just one, rather traditional, rather rigid, outcome to our scenario. However, our research demonstrates that the outcome might in fact vary considerably depending on the working style of the CFO in question. 
<br /><br />

	No matter which working style a CFO adopts, their ability to provide other members of the C-suite with relevant empirical information, at the right time, can help their business make better, informed decisions. By using intelligent technology to streamline day-to-day financial tasks, this becomes possible. Imagine the scenario now - with accurate insight, traditionalists might be more prepared for change, revolutionary risk-takers might need to base less on instinct, and, carers might spend less time stuck in intricate detail. 
<br /><br />

	The age-old image of a process-driven, strict CFO might be somewhat engrained in our psyche, but it’s long overdue a refresh. With the right technology delivering the right information, a CFO has the power to help businesses be more strategic, more flexible and adapt to change.

Time to break the CFO traditions. Here’s how

A groundbreaking <a href="http://www.pwc.co.uk/data-analytics/using-gut-and-gigabytes-to-make-big-decisions.jhtml">PwC study</a> shows a deep correlation between innovation and growth for all businesses. Given today’s corporate growth imperative, and the leverage gained through innovation, it’s important for organizations to make smart <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword>. Too little investment and organizations can fall behind on the innovation power curve. But too much investment, as it turns out can actually be far worse.<br />
<br />
However, making those smart investments to fuel innovative financial strategies is difficult for CFOs lacking operational insight. This is especially challenging in today’s era of digital disruption; CFOs must now grapple with more data sources, more channels, more numerous and complex business models, a more global nature of business, and more reliance on external partners. All of this is necessitating greater information accessibility and responsiveness.<br />
<br />
Data Deficit is a challenge for CFOs<br />

In a recent <a href="http://www.epicor.com/Press-Room/News-Releases/New-Research-Reveals-Data-Deficit-Making-the-Job-of-CFO-More-Challenging-and-Profitability-More-Elusive.aspx">global survey</a> of over 1,500 financial decision makers conducted for <keyword id="656254" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Epicor-Software-Corporation">Epicor Software Corporation</keyword>, over 46 percent of CFOs said they rely on “gut-feel” and instinct to make business decisions in lieu of fast access to accurate internal data.<br />
<br />
The research reveals that many CFOs are dealing with a “data deficit” that threatens decision making and fiscal management and financial operations. The inability to access the right financial information is having a direct impact on business performance and CFOs’ reputations. Of those polled, 45 percent say poor data hampers timely decision making, and inaccurate information is the main cause of organizational mistakes.<br />
<br />
Obstruction to Profitability<br />
<br /> The more the <keyword id="53346" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CFO">CFO</keyword> relies on empirical data for decision making, the greater the chances of higher profitability, suggests the survey results. Within the survey sample CFOs that rely on empirical data for decision making as opposed to instinct had greater profits, with 72% experiencing a profit increase.<br />
<br />
And while a lack of operational insights is pilfering profits today, the real losses may be yet to come. There’s a link between opportunism, innovation and growth, and without the right data, organizations can’t be opportunistic and exacting in making the right smart investments to fuel innovation.<br />
<br />
Opportunity Cost<br />
<br />
Considering the survey shows nearly 1 in 2 CFOs rely on “gut-feel” and instinct to make business decisions in lieu of fast access to accurate internal data, we can ascertain that many are making educated guesses. This reliance on gut-feel versus empirical data can work out for many; however, the decision-making process becomes less data-driven and more of a “judgment call.” It’s only by luck or chance that an organization will arrive at the exact right answer as to how much investment they should make to foster innovation and growth. It’s more likely they will arrive at a figure that’s either under or over par.<br />
<br />
This creates two scenarios: Erring on the side of financial conservatism may put organizations at a competitive disadvantage if CFOs don’t have the confidence to maximize their innovation investments.<br />
<br />
On the flip side, being over-zealous with innovation investments can cause organizations to miss market expectations, or even outspend revenues. And there’s evidence that spending too much on innovation can actually undermine growth and profitability. A <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/06/14/5-tech-companies-spending-more-on-rd-than-apple-in.aspx#ixzz3dAosQAf2"> study from Bernstein Research </a> found that tech companies spending more than 18% of revenue on R&amp;D tend to underperform the market, while those that spend less outperform.<br />
<br />
Considering innovation is key to growth, organizations need a process that enables them to be more exact when planning these investments. Financial executives must be confident whenallocating resources to grow the business in areas such as customer service, sales, and marketing, and in critical innovation investment areas such as new product development and partnerships.<br />
<br />
Financial System Reboot<br />
<br /> While there have been significant changes in business models and financial governance requirements and the volume of data over the years, many organizations’ business systems have stayed the same. The research reveals an incredible 60% of CFOs and <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="finance">finance</keyword> directors still rely on Excel spreadsheets to gain access to data – even those in businesses with over $1 billion in annual revenues.<br />
<br />
To support smart financial strategies for innovation and growth, organizations must be able to access information and analyze it quickly to aid smart, agile decision making. The solution is to have a modern financial IT infrastructure in place that delivers the right data to the right people at the right time in the right way – providing a solid data decision framework.<br />
<br />
To be fully prepared for the future, finance professionals must invest in the right technology tools, so they can make the right decisions, foster organizational responsiveness, and confidently take advantage of windows of opportunity – to propel growth and profitability.<br />

How CFOs transform into Innovation Opportunists

<p>The weekend is in sight. </p><p>The summer of SPACs continues, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-09-02/airbnb-is-said-to-have-rebuffed-approach-from-ackman-spac?sref=5xrDvJna">with a report out of Bloomberg</a> that Bill Ackman's SPAC, Pershing Square Tontine, was in talks with Airbnb prior to the startup confidentially filing for an initial public offering. </p><p>Even though the talks didn't lead to anything, the fact they even occured is pretty astonishing. IBs top recruiting grounds — Potential tax on NYC's uber rich — Brex eyes big customers

For a simple word, ‘growth’ is a more complex topic than first meets the eye and business leaders across the globe are certainly not always speaking the same language when it comes up for discussion. Businesses remain worlds apart when it comes to the topic of growth and how to deal with challenges growth brings.<br />

Businesses measure growth in many different forms. Some company leaders choose to measure growth in terms of profit, while board members at other businesses see geographic expansion as the priority. Some businesses blame themselves when they don’t grow as expected — believing their lack of entrepreneurial spirit or restricted skillsets are holding them back, while others believe it to be external factors such as competition and economic uncertainty that prevent their growth. <br />

<strong>The journey to navigating growth </strong><br />
Recent global research by MORAR Consulting and Epicor Software Corporation has explored the different obstacles, stimulants and even definitions of growth throughout the global business community. The journeys businesses embark on, in order to grow, are different across the globe and some regions and sectors are more optimistic about their prospects than others. However, there are many similarities. Despite the varying business landscapes, 96 per cent of businesses surveyed across the globe admit they face significant obstacles to growth.<br />
<br />
In mature markets, there is a strong inclination to blame external factors if a business is experiencing barriers to growth. Businesses operating in these markets consider economic uncertainty to be a major obstacle; with two-fifths of businesses in the UK and nearly half of businesses in the USA believing this holds them back.<br />
<br />
Those operating in emerging markets however, are likely to see themselves as the barrier to their own success, rather than blaming external factors. Businesses in India are among the most likely to be concerned that they lack the ability to meet changing customer requirements as they grow. Similarly, compared to just nine per cent of Canadian businesses, one-in-five businesses in China are concerned that a lack of entrepreneurial spirit could restrict their growth.<br />
<br />
Chinese businesses, perhaps unsurprisingly, place a strong emphasis on technological leadership, with 68 per cent of business leaders in China viewing technology as a key stimulant to growth. In Germany and India however, a skilled workforce is a higher priority, suggesting that in these regions, human resources (or a lack of the right skills) can make the difference between holding a company back from growth, and propelling its business success forwards.<br />

<strong>Facing the challenges</strong><br />
<br />
Although there are regional differences when it comes to the stimulants and barriers to growth, when businesses do achieve growth, they agree it might not always be easy. Growth may not come in the form we expect — it could be a rushed product portfolio expansion, or an unpredicted surge in demand — and businesses can experience pitfalls in how to cope as a result. In fact, with as many as nine-in-ten organisations suffering from ‘unplanned growth’ worldwide, this is emerging as a challenging and potentially damaging business phenomenon. <br />
<br />
Growing businesses have to find ways to tackle new challenges. So, when growth is not planned for effectively, or if an unexpected growth surge happens, businesses can be easily tripped up. The research demonstrates that around half of business leaders are concerned that growing their business can put excessive pressure on operations, damaging quality and customer satisfaction. A substantial number are also concerned that their business IT systems may prove unable to cope with managing a larger, more complex business model and CEOs in particular, are concerned with a perceived loss of customer intimacy that may come about as a result of growth.<br />
<br />
Growth also poses a number of concerns about resource availability as business activities scale. Business leaders worry that their business might take on large or complex projects that they lack the skillset and technology to deliver effectively, damaging their brand reputation. They are also concerned that by growing the business, workloads may increase to a level that places too much pressure on staff, prompting key personnel to leave the organisation. Just under half of business leaders polled worry they are not personally prepared for the challenges of managing a larger, more diverse business.<br />

It’s no surprise therefore that managing growth expectations is one of the most complex challenges that businesses are currently facing across the globe. <br />

<strong>Being better prepared to manage growth</strong><br />
<br />
Despite the challenges posed by growth, and growth surges, businesses still want to — and will — continue to grow. Around 70 per cent of the surveyed businesses expect to grow this year. So how can they make this happen despite the obstacles we have mentioned, and, once they are growing, how can businesses resolve the challenges they come across?<br />
<br />
Businesses are increasingly turning to technology to make growth possible — and to manage the challenges that come as a result. Having an information framework in place is, for many business leaders, providing them with the essential tools and insight they need to make effective, informed decisions as they grow.<br />
<br />
Next generation enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions present business leaders with a bird’s eye view of operations, allowing them to keep in touch with the nuances of individual processes where necessary, yet access the relevant internal data, customer feedback and financial information they need to remain on course and plan for the future. These solutions, when completely integrated with operations, can collect, manage and report on production line processes, financial performance and distribution times; in order to optimise efficiencies as a business grows. <br />
<br />
Those businesses that have successfully harnessed ERP technology are taking the first step towards mitigating the risks that come with unplanned growth. It doesn’t mean that growth is always easy for them — after all, no matter how much we plan for growth, it can still surprise us. But it does mean that these businesses are better prepared when it happens.<br />
