While it's common for Australians to find fossilized leaves — and there were plenty of those in the farmer's rocks — as the researchers turned over the stones, they also found an array of rare insects.In the three years since, the farmer's field, now known as McGraths Flat, yielded detailed fossils of ancient spiders, cicadas, wasps, flies, fish, flowers, and even a bird feather.Hundreds of these prehistoric species were previously unknown to <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">science</keyword>, and together, they paint the first clear picture of life in the rainforests that once blanketed Australia. At McGraths Flat, paleontologists have already unearthed 13.<div type="image" title="spider fossil imprint on orange red rock" height="2250" width="1500" msid="88764597" hostid="261"></div>"We never imagined that the fossils would be so well preserved and there'd be such a diversity of life," Matthew McCurry, a paleontologist at the Australian Museum and the University of New South Wales, told Insider. McCurry is one of the leaders of the McGraths Flat excavation. His team's <a href="www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abm1406">findings</a> were published Friday in the journal Science Advances."As a paleontologist, it's quite common to go on field work and not find anything," he added. "But at this site we're going with a small team, and we're bringing hundreds of fossils back every time."The fossils formed between 11 and 16 million years ago, during the Miocene era, as Australia's rainforests were drying up and turning into the deserts that dominate its landscape today. The McGraths Flat fossils could reveal how different groups of plants, bugs, fish, and other creatures responded to their changing environment — historical context for modern-day <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">climate change</keyword>.<h2>A lush forest with iron-rich waters made perfect conditions for pristine fossils</h2><div type="image" title="rainforest illustration plants bugs bird flying between trees underground worms ants fish in lake" height="2500" width="2500" msid="88764599" hostid="261"></div>When iron-rich waters flowed into an oxbow lake about 15 million years ago, thousands of creatures now buried at McGraths Flat were trapped. As the water stagnated and the iron minerals fell to the lake's bottom, they encased the dead bugs, leaves, and fish that sunk there."Almost everything that fell into the water was indeed preserved, so you really have a good view of the spectrum of the things that lived at McGraths Flat," Michael Frese, a microbiologist at the University of Canberra, who worked with McCurry to analyze the fossils, told Insider.<div type="image" title="split image left long thin fish fossil right zoomed in bugs inside fish stomach" height="1539" width="5228" msid="88764601" hostid="261"></div>The details preserved in iron rock hint at the creatures' lives. For example, one fish fin was fossilized with the parasitic larva of a freshwater mussel attached to it. The lake wasn't hospitable to mussels, so the fish must have picked up the parasite upstream, then swam into the lake. It likely died soon afterward, because mussel larvae only stay attached to their host for a few weeks, Frese said.<div type="image" title="split image left fish fin fossil right circular red parasite" height="1928" width="5224" msid="88764603" hostid="261"></div>"The level of preservation in the fossils allows us to say things about ecosystems that are otherwise really, really difficult to figure out," McCurry said, adding, "Those interactions between species in particular is something you wouldn't normally have preserved at all."<h2>Fossils reveal a rainforest drying up</h2><div type="image" title="yellow purple flower fossils imprint on red brown rock" height="1815" width="2500" msid="88764605" hostid="261"></div>Though the creatures in the McGraths Flat rocks clearly lived in a rainforest, much of the fossilized pollen comes from desert plants. That suggests that the site was surrounded by arid regions, and wind carried dry-climate plants' pollen to the lake. The rainforest was beginning to dry out."We sit at the brink of a pretty dramatic climate change right now. And to understand and predict what's happening, it's probably good to understand some of the most recent past climate changes," Frese said. With a bounty of fossils from multiple sites like this, paleontologists could learn which species adapted to the Miocene climate changes, which ones migrated to survive it, and which ones went extinct.Already, McCurry and Frese's team has discovered species at McGraths Flat that didn't survive the rainforest drying up. Cataloguing the migrations and extinctions of the Miocene could hint at the future of species facing climate change today.

Then all of a sudden, they just erupt, kind of like a smokestack going up, but made up of tiny pink balls drifting up to the surface," Gareth Phillips, a marine biologist who has observed corals spawn for 10 years, said in a Queensland tourism agency video.Corals are plant-like colonies of hundreds of individual animals called polyps. Each year, they open up and release millions of bundles of eggs and sperm in a massive synchronized breeding event."It's the largest sexual event on the planet," Phillips said.In past years, he added, spawning events have either been a steady trickle or one mass explosion. This year, it was more like pulses of different corals releasing their bundles, he said."There seemed to be different species spawning in waves, one after the other," Phillips, who runs Reef Teach, a tourism and research center, said in a <a href="https://www.queensland.com/us/en/places-to-see/experiences/great-barrier-reef/coral-spawning">statement</a>. Under that stress, many corals expel colorful algae that both live on them and serve as their food source — a process known as "coral bleaching," since corals look white without algae. Bleaching doesn't always kill corals, but they often starve to death afterward.From 2009 to 2018, rising ocean temperatures drove the death of 14% of the world's coral, according to a <a href="https://gcrmn.net/2020-report/">report</a> from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), published last month in collaboration with the United Nations.That's more coral than in all of Australia's reefs.<div type="image" title="yellow coral spawning up close little protuberances releasing small yellow balls" height="1670" width="2500" msid="87992764" hostid="261"></div>Reefs have recovered from coral bleaching in the past. The <keyword id="12635617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="great-barrier-reef" source="Orion">Great Barrier Reef</keyword> had its worst ever bleaching events in 2016 and 2017 — until 2020 topped those records."We are all in shock really at how quick this has happened," Terry Hughes, director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University, told <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/07/australia/great-barrier-reef-bleaching-2020-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a> at the time. Researchers know that the water must be warm enough for eggs to mature in the weeks ahead of spawning. The events also seem to be linked to the tide, the length of the day, and the saltiness of the waters, according to <a href="https://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/the-reef/corals/coral-reproduction">Australia's Great Barrier Reef authority</a>."While we are somewhat able to predict a timeframe for when it might happen, so much about this annual event is still a mystery," Phillips said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Construction of the Line 3 <keyword id="6406378" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pipeline">pipeline</keyword>, which would bring oil from <keyword id="6356687" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="canada">Canada</keyword>, has been underway in <keyword id="19027" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Minnesota">Minnesota</keyword>.</li><li>The pipeline would cut through Ojibwe lands and, they say, threaten their water and way of life.</li><li>Insider talked to Jane Fonda as she brought her celebrity and activism to the Ojibwe fight. </li></ul>Last week, Jane Fonda -- the iconic award-winning actor and lifelong activist -- was travelling through the backroads of northern Minnesota to protest a proposed pipeline that would cut through Ojibwe territory, when she and her companions were stopped by police.The white trooper from the Minnesota State Patrol said they had failed to flick on the car's blinker soon enough before a turn. Fonda, newly vaccinated against Covid-19, was having none of it. "It was very clear the point was to make us miss the press conference," she said to me over the phone the following morning. The trooper kept Fonda and her group for 20 minutes before allowing them to continue on their journey, and then they tailed close behind for the rest of the drive, she said. "If this were my life, day after day, multiple times a day, I would be so angry," Fonda fumed. "It's stressful to feel like you're constantly being surveilled and harassed and arrested for nothing."A state patrol spokesperson declined to comment about the incident. Fonda is no stranger to run-ins with the badge. She's been protesting since the 1960s and has been arrested five times. She traveled to northern Minnesota for an afternoon rally to protest a proposed pipeline expansion that would bring crude oil from Canada's tar sands and cut through protected Anishinaabe treaty territory. The Ojibwe say the Line 3 project threatens the water, the wild rice, and the area's ancient way of life. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">-Jane Seymour Fonda (@Janefonda) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1371550180173099022?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 15, 2021</a></blockquote>A few days before Fonda arrived, there was a rumor she was going to stroll onto the easement and risk arrest with the rest of the frontline water protectors. That didn't happen, but activists say her presence was helpful in bringing attention to their cause. Since the <a href="https://mn.gov/puc/line3/summary/">Line 3 </a> was proposed in 2014, it has been met with delay after delay due to the intrepid actions of the local water protectors. Several times a month, the protectors tie themselves to machinery and lock themselves inside the pipeline, or suspend themselves from trees. In 2018, after the Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved the pipeline, they established an undisclosed resistance camp. Last summer, three white men trespassed onto the property, one with an American flag draped over his shoulder. Enbridge, the Canadian-based company that owns Line 3, declined to answer questions from Insider, but they said in an email, "We respect peaceful protest, and recognize there are many opinions about the energy we all use."As for Fonda, she said she admires the diligence and daring work of the Ojibwe and of the water proctors. "It's been the same throughout history," she said. "It takes people power. It takes strength in numbers. Right now, it's going to take unprecedented numbers of people who have risen up and organized to pressure the government to do what's right."<h3>"I'LL BET MY LIFE ON IT" </h3>Ojibwe lands stretch throughout Minnesota and extend into Canada. Its leaders say Line 3 would violate the treaties of 1854 and 1855, particularly the sections that grant the Ojibwe the rights to hunt, fish, gather, and harvest. If completed, Line 3 would pump more than 750,000 barrels of tar sands crude oil, which has some of the worst carcinogens known to man, across wetlands and fragile ecosystems in Canada, Minnesota, and Wisconsin each day. Enbridge <a href="https://www.enbridge.com/projects-and-infrastructure/public-awareness/minnesota-projects/line-3-replacement-project">says</a> the project that it will create thousands of jobs and provide energy savings to consumers. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, has steadfastly supported the project. President Joe Biden, who revoked the permit for the Keystone XL oil pipeline on his first day in office, has yet to voice a position on Line 3.<div type="image" title="JF Tara, Jane, and Winona LaDuke" height="1125" width="2251" msid="81713384" hostid="261"></div>The event Fonda and her crew were driving to was held on the banks of the Mississippi River, in a remote, wooded area just yards from where the pipeline is being built. The sound of earthmovers and sudden loud bangs echoed throughout the forest. Sheriffs and pipeline security had parked their cruisers and trucks close by. Around 150 Ojibwe, elders, white allies, and elder white allies were on site, clad in red, hoisting signs that read, "PROTECT THE WATER" and "STOP KILLING OUR LANDS.""This is a crime!" Fonda shouted to the crowd from the mic, some snapping in approbation while others nodded and bellowed. "From a global climate crisis perspective, this is criminal. From a tribal justice, tribal rights point of view, this is criminal." "Line 3 is not going to be completed. I will bet my life on it," she said.Next to Fonda sat Tara Houska, an Ojibwe and tribal attorney. The two were arrested together in January 2020 in Washington, D.C., along with Joaquin Phoenix, during a Fire Drill Friday protest. Fonda started the weekly demonstrations to raise awareness of the climate crisis, and the events have since moved online due to the Coronavirus pandemic."We were here before (the state) of Minnesota, since before the United States," Houska said to the crowd. "We deserve to have a future, and our children deserve to have a future." Specifically, "our wild rice matters," she said. Wild rice is a cultural and spiritual linchpin to the Ojibwe; it's the livelihood of the people, and Line 3 threatens the health and cleanliness of the water from which it stems.Houska, one of the leaders of the resistance camp, is easy to spot by her two distinctive long, black braids that stop just shy of her thighs. Oil workers tail her as she leaves actions and even the grocery store, she said, calling them desperate intimidation tactics meant to deter her from her work to stop the pipeline. (Enbridge and local police declined to offer comment.) She said surveillance is near-constant, and that helicopters fly as low as the treeline above their camp. "We are fighting for our future -- the youth are fighting for their futures quite literally with their bodies," she added. Houska is facing three misdemeanor charges for trespassing, unlawful assembly, and presence at an unlawful assembly for leading protests against Line 3.<div type="image" title="JF arrest FDF" height="3846" width="5796" msid="81713385" hostid="261"></div>Referring to the intimidation tactics that Houska and other activists face, Fonda was incredulous, and noted that this was happening in the same state where Derek Chauvin is due to stand trial for the murder of George Floyd. "It's amazing that the state of Minnesota, with the world watching the Chauvin trial and what that trial represents, are also allowing the kind of demonizing and harassment and brutalization of people of color, of indigenous people up here."Along with Fonda, celebrities with massive reach, including Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio, have rallied to shine a light on the Indigenous-led fight against pipelines, including Line 3. And then there's Jewel, the Alaska-raised, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, who was adopted by an Indigenous family when she was a kid and later founded the group Project Clean Water.As a young girl, Jewel used to live off the land, haul water, and drink straight from a pristine creek near her home. She said it's high-time people listen to Indigenous peoples, the original stewards of the land."I think that our Indigenous brothers and sisters have not been separated from the land, they still have that relationship to the land; they know everything is living, everything has a voice. And as white people I think that's a very foreign concept," she told Insider in a telephone interview."Stop Line 3," she said before hanging up the phone. Back at the Mississippi River, the temperature was 20-degrees and getting colder as the daylight faded. Twice, sheriffs roared towards them in their cruisers, splattering mud and stopping just feet in front of them. "You know, we're not just fighting for our water. We're fighting for your water, too," she said, before calmly leading the group back towards the Mississippi.

New Delhi, Mar 29 () The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Sunday constituted 10 different high-level committees to suggest measures to ramp up healthcare, put the economy back on track, reduce pain and misery of people as quickly as possible post 21-day lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic.These committees looking after various aspects will work under the overall guidance of P K Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, sources said.The initiative is being viewed as pro-active step by the government to deal with multiple challenges, which the outbreak of pandemic COVID-19 has posed and made the country to deal with emergency situation, they said, adding these groups will also work on strategy for restoring normalcy in their respective sectors, including healthcare, in the shortest possible time frame.The panel on the 'Economy and Welfare' headed by Economic Affairs Secretary Atanu Chakraborty has been tasked to address the concerns of various sectors, including both formal and informal segments of the economy - hit hard by coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown.The panel is expected to suggest various relief measures to put economy back on track as soon as possible, the sources said.Special emphasis will have to be welfare schemes for the poor who have suffered a lot on account of the lockdown, they said, adding poor and vulnerable section of the society has been the key focus of the government and top priority will be given to deal with the challenges before them in the coming days.Besides, two other working groups under the leadership of NITI Aayog memeber V K Paul and Enviornment Secretary C K Mishra will work on preparedness for medical emergency, seamless supply of medicine, medicalequipment and hospital availability.They have been entrusted with the task of mapping of hospitals across the country and medical facility of public sector undertakings and other government agencies, including police forces and army are roped in to deal with emergency situation post lockdown.Already many agencies, including government school, universities and Railways have committed for setting up isolation ward.In addition to this, the sources said, the panel would also focus on augmentation of trained medical professionals and capacity building.Suggestions are also solicited on increasing capacity for manufacturing of ventilators and other medical equipment. Research and Development in the medical field is another focus area for the panel, they added.Committee under V K Paul and C K Mishra are expected to ease out burden of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which is currently doing heavy lifting in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.At the same time, they will do in-depth study on protective gear to be used by public to ensure infection is contained post April 14.Logistics will be another critical area which would be looked by a working group for ensuring movement of goods, medicine and medical equipment, doctors and other services, source said.Each group will have about 6 members with one officer from the PMO and Cabinet Secretariat, so that there is a full coordination and suggestions accepted are implemented without any delay.In all about 20 secretaries of various departments and ministries and 40 other officials have started working on various issues and come up with measures at the earliest, the sources said.Each group has been given upper time limit of a week to come out with measures on the specified sector.Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 announced a complete lockdown across the country for 21 days, asserting that social distancing is the only way out for the country in its decisive battle against coronavirus.In his second address to the nation on the pandemic, Modi made a fervent appeal to the countrymen not to cross the ''lakshman rekha'' of their homes in the next three weeks.The lockdown lead to large scale exodus of migrant labours from cities to their native places as they were left to fend for themselves.The Prime Minister on Sunday sought the nation's forgiveness for imposing a monumental lockdown on the country, saying it was a question of life and death and expressed confidence that "we will definitely win the battle" against coronavirus menace that has claimed 25 lives in India so far.According to the Health Ministry update released an hour before Modi's address, India has recorded a total of 979 cases and 25 deaths so far.
