IIM Udaipur kicks off its third Entrepreneurship Summit, India’s unicorns to be in focus

At a time when India is facing a startup boom, <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">entrepreneurship</keyword> has become the top choice of youngsters across India’s educational institutions. IITs and IIMs are seeing creative minds bring their best of ideas forward like never before. But ideas are like streams which have to be channelized and made to flow to the ocean. It is this crucial part that companies like IBM are playing in Indian universities, and thereby fostering innovation in India. 
 The IBM University Relations team has tied up with top B-school entrepreneur cells in India to organize technology mentoring and conducting contests for students who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs or starting their own business ventures. The most recent example is a contest which was held at <keyword id="19478" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM">IIM</keyword> - Bangalore's flagship event - Eximus. IBM had assigned one mentor to each of the teams who wanted to build a prototype on technologies including IoT, Analytics, Cognitive on IBM Cloud. Their programs are aiming to develop a talent pool of adaptive innovators across multiple disciplines to meet the challenges of the New Economy. 
 Mezjan Dallas, Country Manager, <keyword id="3824957" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ibm-india-university-relations">IBM India University Relations</keyword> told Business Insider - “With India experiencing an upsurge in the startup space with new business models emerging due to new technologies, it is imperative for the new generation to be exposed to opportunities in these emerging technology areas. They need to develop industry relevant skills and challenge themselves to undertake entrepreneurial projects and contribute to the society at large.” 
 He further added – “There has been positive feedback from <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> on the simplicity and ease of use of IBM’s Cloud platform and Cognitive solutions.” 
 
Owing to fruitful and productive association with B-schools so far, the University Relations wing at IBM is now actively seeking more collaborations and relationships with Indian universities. 
 
Dallas said - “Our goal is to develop long-term, mutually beneficial collaborative relationships with the faculties across academic institutions by fostering advanced research, promoting university-industry exchanges, mentoring start-ups, providing infrastructure and technology support, and cultivating tomorrow’s world-class researchers. A focus on encouraging social entrepreneurship through Universities is on the horizon. Learning of cool technologies such as IBM’s Watson by way of fun avenues such as programming Robots with Watson is also on the horizon.”

One student demonstrated how drones can be used to detect gas leakages and prevent disasters in coal mines. 
 
IBM and Venturesity 'Career Challenge' for industry readiness

IBM and IIM Ahmedabad Cognitive Entrepreneurship Challenge 
CEC was part of "Masterplan 2016" which is an annual competition held within IIM-A where students and startups build business solutions and win exciting prizes. The main objective of CEC was to encourage young entrepreneurs and the student community to build business solutions around capabilities using IBM's Cloud platform – Bluemix. Students were also given access to other relevant IBM technology platforms in the areas of Analytics and Security.

The summer placement for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Post+Graduate+Programme&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Post Graduate Programme</a> has been completed in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Post+Graduate+Programme&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institute of Management</a> <keyword id="42774" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Udaipur">Udaipur</keyword> (<keyword id="725088" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIMU">IIMU</keyword>). Among the 181 students in the batch, 157 sought placements through the institute and eight opted for the summer entrepreneurship programme offered by IIMU. 
 
The number of companies rose drastically by 9.6% over the previous year as a total of 46 companies made offers for summer internships. 
 Regular recruiters included <keyword id="114046" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Electric">General Electric</keyword>, RBL Bank, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Amul&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Amul</a>, Xpress Money, NMC Healthcare, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Snapdeal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Snapdeal</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ICICI+Bank&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ICICI Bank</a> while 18 new companies joined the list. The average stipend offered stands at Rs 52,653 while the highest stipend offered jumped to Rs 1,60,000, a 10% rise over the previous year. 
 
Offers were made in various other domains like business analytics (11), operations (11), human resource management (7) and information technology (12).

IIM Udaipur rocked the summer placement, 157 students placed among 181

When I entered the <keyword id="60501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Bangalore">IIM Bangalore</keyword> campus yesterday, right from the entry gates to the registration desk, at every point my mind asked a question where I was supposed to go, there was either a smiling IIM-B staff to escort or signboards to direct me. 
 I was aware that it is one of the biggest <keyword id="3549661" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-summit">startup summit</keyword> taking place in the country which is why my Editor flew me down to cover it, but having visited a few events in my journalistic career, I was still expecting arrangements here to be shoddy considering it was a student-led summit. Blame this cynicism for some of my past no-so-good experiences. Once down here, however, I was in for a pleasant surprise. 
 
Walking down the lush green lanes at IIM to the Main Building where <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/IIM-Bangalore-unveils-Eximius-with-some-of-the-biggest-names-from-the-startup-industry/articleshow/53571472.cms">'Eximius'</a> was underway, I already knew I was going to not just just a big, but also a well-managed event. Often, when going for such summits, one sails through a comfortable experience but fails to acknowledge the efforts that go behind putting the event together. And so, I decided to uncover ‘Behind the Scenes’ to understand what must have gone behind putting together Eximius – an event that has 150 college partners, over 100 plus corporate partners, 6 stalwarts as keynote speakers (including former Finance Minister <keyword id="43940" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="P-Chidambaram">P Chidambaram</keyword>, Rang De Basanti fame Kunal Kapoor, Actor-Singer-Theatre Director Mr <keyword id="127525" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Piyush-Mishra">Piyush Mishra</keyword> among others). 
 
It’s no child’s play really to host 37 events featuring 150 startups in a mix of sessions - mentorship, on-the-spot events like quiz and simulation games, workshops and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bzzwings-The-Biggest-B-Plan-Competition-this-year-is-underway-at-IIM-B-and-the-Top-2-Startups-will-get-Funding-upto-Rs-40-lakh/articleshow/53581937.cms">B-plan contests </a>where over a whopping Rs 1 crore is up for grabs! Moreover, some of these sessions have had several rounds before Eximius started, and will have several others after this summit ends. It means continued and doubled efforts for the Organizing Team comprising 33 members - all first and second year Post Graduate Program students. The show they put up is for everyone to see and relish, but the journey to this was a rather difficult one. 
 
During my interaction with the organizers, I learnt that full-fledged work on planning the event began earlier this year, around the same time when several PGP students were underdoing rigorous internships. Kushal Singhal, the Sponsorship Head for Eximius, said, “We were working for the event despite putting 16 hours each day into our internships. We would just go to our rooms to get some sleep.” 
 
Nishank Bidamia, another core team member, said, “Event planning starts 5-6 month in advance and the idea is to conceptualize the event well. We have to make sure the problems statements are conducive enough for participants, the kind of crowd that we get are good for sponsors and several other such things. At the same time, we didn’t want to lose the entrepreneurship focus because our main intention all along was to keep Eximius more entrepreneurship-friendly this year.” 
 
However, real introspection on how to conduct Eximius 2016 had begun last August itself, when the 8th edition took place. 
 
Nishank explained how - "Last year, the first thing we did after Eximius got over was to review the event. We started telling ourselves where we had gone wrong. On the basis of this, we decided to improve on our mistakes in the next edition. So, we first went about solving these problems before planning anything new.” 
 
Once done, the team came up with some new sessions on social entrepreneurship, focusing on technology and digital marketing. Nishank took pride in adding that their hard work helped triple the prize money in competitions this year. No wonder, this team estimated the footfalls to be close to over 5,000 for just a two-day event. 
 
The Organizing team roped in two big incubators– NSRCEL which has a long term association as it works as IIM-B’s incubation cell, and Villgro which came onboard this year and claimed it was ready to provide incubation up to Rs 65 lakh if pitches by social entrepreneurs would compel them to. 
 “There are opportunities of up to Rs 1 crore for people to grab in our event. Besides that we also have IBM and <keyword id="1397792" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalaari-Capital">Kalaari Capital</keyword> who will also be viewing entries. There again is a chance of getting VC funding here if startups impress them. We also started a monthly initiative called B-starters last year to promote entrepreneurship within the college. IvyCamp, a part of IvyVentures, was brought on-board so that people who want to be entrepreneurs in college and who aspire to be one in and around the college could get an opportunity to get access to mentors. We are carrying this association with them in Eximius where startups would get a chance to be mentored by the Ivy mentors,” said Nishank. 
 
The most startling fact is that they went contacting companies using social media. Kushal said, “We contacted companies through Linkedin. The IIM tag and the success of the previous Eximius editions helped us a lot in getting companies to sponsor the event.” 
 
Eximius has been growing by 15-20 per cent every year, and there was no reason for the organizing team who started looking for sponsorships in February this year, to believe that they would fail in their endeavour. But again, the journey was not a cakewalk and their sportsmanship reflects as they shared details with Business Insider. 
 
Kaushal Kishore, the Secretary of ENI club at IIM Bangalore, said, “For each sponsor we contacted, we had a list of at least 15-20 companies who rejected our proposal. Almost 35 companies rejected out proposal. Sponsorships side, we got rejections from on the event side as well. So, we must have contacted at least 100 or more personalities for speaker sessions. Some rejected the offer, some agreed but the time of the event did not suit them and so they turned the offer down, till ultimately when we zeroed in on the 10 eminent speakers that we have now.” 
 
Even as it was a nerve-wracking moment for these students, the best part is they all laughed about it while narrating their experience. Just three days before the D-Day as I got chatting with them, they were excited and nervous both. 
 
Kushal said – “We attend classes till 6 pm, then assemble for the event work. We stay up till 6 am in the morning. Even if we there’s time to sleep, we can’t.” 
 
But almost all of them pitched in to tell me what fun time they had attending classes, carrying out internships and doing submissions while working crazily for Eximius by staying up late, chatting and having meetings in the dead of the night alongside some music. 
 
Kaushal said, “A team of 33 have been handling this event and after passing out from college, we don’t think we will ever get a chance in life when such a dedicated team would ever come together again to drive an event or a project.” 
 
For someone who came here to cover the event, I see a larger thing that goes their credit - As innovative business models are being unearthed at the IIM-B campus throughout the day today, the team has been able to connect the student community and early-stage startups to the industry (mentors, investors and full-grown startups) inside their campus which can help ideas get transformed into empowered ventures. When we say India needs a startup ecosystem, this is what it means, except that it has to be done on a much larger scale, but with the same passion, dedication, willingness, commitment and goal.

IIM Bangalore unveils 'Eximius' with some of the biggest names from the startup industry

IKP Knowledge Park, which is an incubator jointly set up by ICICI Bank and the government of Telangana, has also participated in the round, along with a few angel investors. The science and technology park has over 60 companies in the area of biotechnology, pharma, medical devices and energy. Mestastop Solutions focuses on cancer metastasis, which is the reason why cancer spreads to other body parts. Metastases most commonly develop when cancer cells break away from the main tumour and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system. This causes cancer cells to travel from the original tumor to other organs and form new tumours. The spreading of the tumour is responsible for 90% of the cancer deaths, Mestastop highlighted in its press note. Mestastop was founded by Dr Arnab Roy Chowdhury and Dr Debabani Roy Chowdhury in 2018. The company uses wet lab biology and predictive analytics to identify and distinguish unique properties of metastasis and leverage them for drug discovery and patient treatment. A wet lab is a lab where drugs, chemicals, and other types of biological matter can be analysed and tested using various liquids. IIM-Ahmedabad incubator invests in an under-trial AI startup that can possibly predict cancer and lead to drug discovery

IIM Ahmedabad With 18 offers, e-commerce major Amazon has been the biggest hirer during the summer placements of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Amazon made the maximum 18 offers, followed by McKinsey &amp; Company with 15 in the consulting domain and Goldman Sachs with nine among the banks.In the general management cohort, Tata Administrative Services was the largest recruiter with 10 offers. In the consumer tech area, Sprinklr made nine offers. Good offers also came in for sales and marketing, with Hindustan Unilever making seven and Procter &amp; Gamble, SC Johnson and <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> making six offers each. Prominent recruiters in the investment banking and markets space included Citibank, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan, Kotak IB and Standard Chartered. Banking, financial services and insurance hirers included American Express, FinIQ, Fullerton and RBL. Accenture Strategy, AT Kearney, Bain &amp; Co, Oliver Wyman and the Boston Consulting Group represented the management and niche consulting domain. 
 
IIM Nagpur 
The highest stipend offer that was bagged by a student of the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) batch was of Rs. 1.6 lakh for a duration of two months.Vijay Phate, in-charge of placement office, said, "This year, the highest and the average stipend offered saw a significant jump. The highest stipend offered was Rs1.6 lakh, and the average stipend of the batch also increased by 24% to Rs56,900." This year more than 40 recruiters from across sectors have found IIM-N students suitable for the summer internship positions, the premier institute said in a press statement. IIM-N has seen a significant increase in number of first-time recruiters, even for the second batch of PGP students, it added. 
 
IIM Amritsar 
With Ernst &amp; Young as the top recruiter, IIM Amritsar witnessed 100 per cent placement for its largest ever batch. Ernst and Young was the top recruiter followed by ICICI Lombard, Maruti Suzuki, Shopclues, Toyota, SBI, EXIM Bank, Adani, DHFL Pramerica, PayU, IFFCO, Tega, RBI, Canara Bank and Choco-Swiss. A total of 51 companies had participated in the IIM Amritsar summer placement. While the highest stipend offered is INR 1.1 lakh, the average stipend offered is INR 49780 thus marking an increase in 49.64% in the average stipend on a year-over-year basis. 
 
IIM Shillong 
The season witnessed a highest stipend of INR 2,50,000 and an average total stipend of INR 81,000, a significant jump of 17% from the previous year. A total of 184 roles were offered across various functional domains. Sales &amp; Marketing emerged as the most sought-after domain with 36% of the total offers made to the candidates. Prominent recruiters such as Mahindra GMC, Aditya Birla Group, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>, Dabur, <keyword id="6358584" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HSBC">HSBC</keyword>, Perfetti Van Melle, ICICI Bank, Amazon, <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword> Business Consulting, Titan, GSK Pharmaceuticals, TATA Steel, Fidelity Management Research and Wipro continued to show faith in the caliber of the students. The Institute also played host to an array of new and eminent recruiters this year including ITC, <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> S&amp;O, Kohler, Beiersdorf (Nivea), Yes Bank, Piramal Enterprises, Cummins, VMware, Aviva Life Insurance, Lava, and Metlife. Deloitte emerged as the largest recruiter in Consulting domain offering the highly coveted Strategy and Operations profile. HSBC made the maximum offers in the Finance domain while ITC, Tata Motors and Tata Steel made the highest number of offers in Sales &amp; Marketing domain. Apart from the increasing number of offers made in FMCG, Manufacturing &amp; Retail sectors, the season also saw participation of unconventional sectors such as Healthcare and Social Sector offering Strategy and Development roles. 
 
IIM Udaipur 
Of the 181 students in the batch, 157 sought placements through the Institute while 8 students opted for the summer entrepreneurship programme offered by IIMU. A total of 46 firms made offers for summer internships, an increase of 9.5% over the previous year. While regular recruiters like General Electric, RBL Bank, Amul, Xpress Money, NMC Healthcare, Snapdeal and ICICI Bank among others continued to show their faith in the potential of the students at IIMU, eighteen new firms joined the recruiters’ list. The average stipend offered stands at INR 52,653 while the highest stipend offered jumped to INR 1,60,000, a 10% rise over the previous year. The average stipend offered to the top 10 percentile increased by 5.3% over the previous year to INR 1,30,497. The average stipend offered to top 25 percentile students stands at INR 1,06,100 and for the top 50 percentile it is INR 81,366. All figures are for the entire duration of the internship. This year also witnessed a 100% increase in the number of international placements with 14 students bagging offers outside India. The average stipend for the international placements is INR 1,08,425 for the two months excluding benefits such as accommodation, travel, and flight-tickets. 
 
IIM Trichy 
The average stipend offered for the internship period was Rs. 53,030 and the highest domestic offer was Rs. 2.50 lakhs. Roles were offered across various domains like Sales &amp; Marketing, Finance, General Management, Consulting, Strategy, Operations &amp; HR. Some of the major recruiters taking part in the process were Microsoft, Dabur, World Bank, Mahindra, Accenture, Cognizant, Deloitte, Yes Bank, etc. There was an even distribution in the companies visiting from various sectors like BFSI, Consulting, Manufacturing, IT &amp; Services, FMCG, Retail, E-commerce, Supply Chain &amp; Infrastructure. The average of the top 10% offers for the domains like Sales &amp; Marketing, General Management &amp; Finance witnessed a growth in the range of 20-25% compared to the previous year. The median stipend offered to the top 10 percentile of the batch was Rs. 1.31 lakhs and that offered to the top 25 percentile of the batch was Rs. 1 lakh.

Top summer placement offers at IIMs across the country

Many companies that have scaled up operations are taking the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CSR">CSR</a> seriously. Out of 216 companies surveyed by Futurescape and IIM Udaipur commissioned by Economic Times, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</a> topped the list. 
 
M&amp;M jumped two places and in this year’s CSR survey, there were four Tata group companies in the top 10. 
 
This time, the focus of the companies has shifted from anticipating the change to implementing it. 
 
Mahindra &amp; Mahindra’s key CSR areas focussed on girl child, youth and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=farmers">farmers</a> through several programmes. Its chain of schools-Mahindra Pride Schools-provides livelihood training to youth from socially and economically disadvantaged communities. 
 
Meanwhile, the second slot was taken by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+Power">Tata Power</a>, which is working in areas like education, environment, community development, health, safety, security, resource and energy conservation, etc. The total CSR spending of Tata Power in FY15 was at Rs 31.1 crore as against the 2% of PAT requirement of Rs 29.8 crore. 
 
Third, fourth, fifth positions were taken by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+Steel">Tata Steel</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=L%26T">L&amp;T</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tata+chemicals">Tata Chemicals</a>, respectively. 
 The CSR spending of <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword> in 2014-15 stood at Rs 171.46 crore, while L&amp;T spent Rs 76.54 crore on CSR in the last fiscal. 
 
Tata Chemicals, which focused on sustainable community development and preserving the ecosystem, in the last fiscal, spent Rs 12.76 crore on CSR. 
 
It is worth mentioning that Jubilant Life Sciences, a healthcare company, entered the top ten list and there was no foreign player. 
 
Jubilant Bhartia Foundation (JBF) focuses on elementary education, improving health indices, employability and promoting social entrepreneurship. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> was at the 11th spot and TCS at 17th.
