<ul><li>Nearly 85% of the surveyed people in India believed that employers end up contacting men instead of women when there is the scarcity of jobs in the market. </li><li>Socio-economic pressures have forced women to stay away from the <keyword id="27859" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="engineering">engineering</keyword> field in India. </li><li>India can increase its gross domestic product by 27% if the employment rate of women matches the employment rate of men engineers, says the report. </li></ul>India’s skewed gender balance in its workforce has been a huge drag on the country’s economy. But more worryingly, an increasing number of its qualified <keyword id="737301" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-engineers">women engineers</keyword> are out of work, according to a <a href="https://research.swe.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/18-SWE-011-Research-India-Report-11-05.pdf">recent survey</a>. In the last few years, the employment rate of women engineers has worsened from 35% in 2005 to 26% in 2018, said a survey by the Society of Women Engineers and the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (WLL). The survey, which interviewed 423 women and 270 men, cites multiple reasons behind the trend including social pressures, but gender discrimination during hiring decisions and bias faced at workplace is a major factor behind the poor showing. For example, employers tend to choose a male engineer over a woman engineer, especially during economic downturns, according to the survey. Nearly 85% of the surveyed respondents said they believed that employers end up hiring men instead of women when there is the scarcity of jobs in the market. Workplace bias The engineers surveyed in India believe that more than half the women do not know ‘what it takes to succeed as an engineer’. Less than 50% of the women and 30% of men also reported biases but arguments made by women were considered inappropriate even when it was related to work. Additionally, 76% of women engineers reported having to prove themselves repeatedly to get the same level of respect as their colleagues; 77% of said they were confined to a narrower range of acceptable behaviors. As many as 40% of women engineers reported bias against mothers in their workplaces. The incidences of sexual harassment at the workplaces is also a big concern. Out of the total respondents, 11% of women engineers were struggling with unwanted sexual attention, said the survey. Another headwind for women engineers was ‘maternal wall’ bias -- 40% of the men believed that women should not work more after having children. Like many other countries, engineering has traditionally been a male-dominated field in India with women being mostly under-represented. That’s partly due to the perceived long hours of the profession as well as socio-economic pressures. However, even with the advances in technology that have enabled better remote working opportunities, the rate of employment for Indian women engineers remains significantly low. A whopping 40% of India's women engineers don't have jobs because of 'rampant' sexism at workplace

At least <a href="https://www.insider.com/part-of-miami-condo-block-from-ivanka-jared-caved-in-2021-6">128 people are missing</a>.</li><li>Insider spoke with three structural engineers to find out why such a building might abruptly fall.</li><li>Common causes include poor maintenance or eroding soil under a structure's foundation.</li></ul>At least 20 people are dead and <a href="https://www.insider.com/part-of-miami-condo-block-from-ivanka-jared-caved-in-2021-6">120 are missing</a> after the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-florida-condo-building-collapse-surfside-2021-6">abruptly collapsed last week</a>. As rescuers continue to search for buried victims, investigators have started sifting through building records, videos, and physical wreckage to determine what, precisely, caused the structure to fall. While it's extremely uncommon for a building to collapse in the absence of a natural disaster like an earthquake or hurricane, there are a handful of reasons why it could happen, three structural engineers told Insider.Some of the most likely causes include poor maintenance or overloading part of a structure with too much weight. Buildings are designed to hold up to twice as much load as is deemed necessary - but that strength decreases as a building ages and deteriorates over time. "Very simply, structures collapse when the load that is placed upon them exceeds the strength of the structure," Ronald Hamburger, a structural engineer with the national <keyword id="27859" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="engineering">engineering</keyword> firm Simpson, Gumpertz, &amp; Heger, told Insider. That may include a lack of new paint, or a failure to shore up cracks in concrete and eliminate rust and stagnant water. "You can have a perfectly designed building, and a perfectly constructed building per the engineer drawings, but if that building doesn't receive proper maintenance, that is an issue," Joel Figueroa-Vallines, a structural engineer from Orlando and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, told Insider."Buildings are like anything else - the cars we drive, or even ourselves as human beings," he added. "If we don't maintain ourselves, we don't age well."In Miami-Dade County, where Champlain Towers South is located, buildings are recertified 40 years after their construction. Builders finished the condo in 1981, and it was <a href="https://miami.cbslocal.com/2021/06/24/partially-collapsed-building-in-surfside-was-due-for-40-year-inspection/">due for its 40-year inspection this year</a>.Some experts said that's too long to wait."If maintenance or inspection happened every five years, think of how much safer that would be," Kit Miyamoto, a structural engineer with Miyamoto International based in Sacramento, California, told Insider.<h2>Part of the structure gets overloaded</h2><div type="image" title="bangladesh building collapse" height="900" width="1200" msid="84091959" hostid="261"></div>A collapse can occur if there's more weight on one part of a building than the structure is designed to handle - what's known as overloading. In 2015, six people died in Berkeley, California when an apartment balcony collapsed during a party. While part of the balcony had rotted, Miyamoto said, the excessive weight catalyzed the fall.Overloading also contributed to a factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh eight years ago.<h2>Land underneath the foundation moves or erodes</h2><div type="image" title="building collapse" height="1460" width="2200" msid="84091961" hostid="261"></div>Buildings "very rarely naturally fall," Miyamoto said, adding, "maybe every five years or so you hear of an abrupt collapse worldwide."But sometimes, wind and running water can erode the soil underneath a building's foundation, or cause the land to sink. When these events happen, "it creates a vacuum that would definitely cause an instability," Miyamoto said.In the case of the Surfside condo - which is built on top of reclaimed wetlands - it's possible that a large amount of groundwater is flowing back and forth under the building, which could exacerbate erosion, Figueroa-Vallines said.<h2>Steel and concrete deteriorates over time</h2><div type="image" title="Two men inspect the bottom of a balcony." height="718" width="957" msid="84091963" hostid="261"></div>All three engineers agreed that deterioration could play an outsized role in building collapses like the recent disaster in Surfside.As building materials interact with chemicals in the air around them, those materials start to break down. "Buildings and structures located in coastal environments where they are repeatedly exposed to salt-laden air experience more corrosion than structures located in central US," Hamburger said.After four or five decades, a concrete and steel structure is vulnerable to substantial rusting, he added.That's why continually repainting a seaside building is critical, because the coating protects it from damage."Salt essentially melts away the concrete," Figueroa-Vallines said.<h2>The building has a design flaw </h2><div type="image" title="nigeria building collapse" height="3280" width="4868" msid="84091968" hostid="261"></div>Typically, buildings are designed with redundancies - if part of the structure fails or weakens to the point that it can't support the building's weight anymore, that load gets redistributed somewhere else. If the floor of an apartment building caves in, for example, it shouldn't drop to the floor below it.These local accidents can be caused by several factors - a fire, corrosion, or even a truck backing up into a weight-bearing column in the building's basement, Hamburger said.Normally, they shouldn't cause a catastrophic failure like the one at Champlain Towers South, he added. But some older buildings lack redundancies that stop local accidents from cascading into bigger, building-wide problems.

An <keyword id="498974" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aspiring-Minds">Aspiring Minds</keyword> Survey has revealed that merely 7 per cent engineering graduates are employable in this country, which raises serious questions on the quality of higher education system India is following. The study done on 1,50,000 engineering students who graduated in 2013 further reveals that as many as 97 per cent of graduating engineers want jobs either in <keyword id="625014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Software-engineering">software engineering</keyword> or core engineering. However, only 3 per cent have suitable skills to be employed in software or product market, and only 7 per cent can handle core engineering tasks. 

	This is further validated by a HRD ministry report which says India has 6,214 engineering and technology institutions which are enrolling 2.9 million students. Around 1.5 million engineers are released into the job market every year. But the dismal state of higher education in India ensures that they simply do not have adequate skills to be employed.

 The Aspiring Minds study further notes that investments and growth of technology <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> is the new business story in India. Merely 3.84% of engineers qualify for a startup technology role, as per the study. This is a big concern and would surely hamper the growth of startups in India. It may also cause the market to be diluted with a lot of low quality products floating around. 

	However, this is not to say that students do not aspire to work with startups. 
	 
	More aspiration to work for startups
 

	Last year, an Aspiring Minds Survey found that 6% students were interested to work for a startup. This year it is up by 33% to 8%. Students from tier 1 colleges are most motivated to work in startups as compared to others. It is also observed that inclination of males is strikingly high to work with startups than that of females.

	 
	Among all of these, more students as compared to last year are interested to work for startups. While this is good news, there is a still a long way to go as a figure like 8% may be more relatively, but still only shows interest from a handful of candidates on the whole.

The IPO was open for subscription between September 14 and September 16. Sansera Engineering is looking to raise between ₹1,282 crore from a complete offer for sale of 1.72 crore shares in the IPO. The IPO has received a good response from investors, especially from qualified institutional buyers and non-institutional investors as investors have bid for 13.83 crore shares against the 1.21 crore shares on offer. The portion for qualified institutional investors was subscribed 26.47 times while the non-institutional investor category received a bid for 11.37 times. Moreover, B R Preetham, group chief executive officer at Sansera Engineering, in an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/sansera-engineering-ipo-is-opening-from-today-and-closes-on-september-16/articleshow/86189006.cms">interview </a>with Business Insider said that, “the company has shifted its focus towards aluminium forged components” as they believe it has better revenue prospects. London, Scientists have engineered E. coli bacteria -- the most widely studied microbe -- to generate electricity from <keyword id="1021863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wastewater" source="Orion">wastewater</keyword>. This groundbreaking achievement in bioelectronics outlines a novel approach that could revolutionise both waste management and energy production. "Though there are exotic microbes that naturally produce electricity, they can only do so in the presence of specific chemicals. E. coli can grow on a wide range of sources, which allowed us to produce electricity in a wide range of environments, including from waste water," said Ardemis Boghossian, Professor at EPFL, a public research university in Lausanne, Switzerland. E. coli bacteria have been harnessed to create electricity through a process known as extracellular electron transfer (EET). The researchers engineered E. coli bacteria to exhibit enhanced EET, making them highly efficient "electric microbes." Unlike previous methods that required specific chemicals for electricity generation, the bioengineered E. coli can produce electricity while metabolising a variety of organic substrates. In the study, the team even tested the technology directly on wastewater that they collected from a local brewery in Lausanne. "Instead of putting energy into the system to process organic waste, we are producing electricity while processing organic waste at the same time -- hitting two birds with one stone," said Boghossian. "The exotic electric microbes weren't even able to survive, whereas our bioengineered electric bacteria were able to flourish exponentially by feeding off this waste." The implications of the study extend beyond waste treatment. Being able to generate electricity from a wide range of sources, the engineered E. coli can be utilised in microbial fuel cells, electrosynthesis, and biosensing, to name a few. In addition, the bacterium's genetic flexibility means that it can be tailored to adapt to specific environments and feedstocks, making it a versatile tool for sustainable technology development. "Our work is quite timely, as engineered bioelectric microbes are pushing the boundaries in more and more real-world applications. We have set a new record compared to the previous state-of-the-art," said lead scientist Mohammed Mouhib from EPFL.

This percentage is highest in the world as the first ever global report commissioned by Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering stated that only 20% and 30% were interested in engineering career in same age bracket in UK and the USA, respectively. 
 
Not only this, more and more girls are interested in engineering for the report revealed that India had bridged the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gender+gap">gender gap</a> in the field engineering at 14% in 2015. 
 
Globally, 66% men and 43% women are interested in engineering, whereas if we look at India, 85% Indian men and nearly 79% women in India showed interest in the field, which is yet again the highest in the world. 
 
So why are they interested in engineering so much? To this, 80% of 16 year olds in India said it was their first choice, while the number rose to 81% among 18-24 year olds, and 87% among 24-30 year olds. 
 
"In India, the software services industry alone recruits about 300,000 people every year. Meanwhile, over a third of the country's engineering students are women. 
 
This boom is partly due to businesses wanting to make use of the comparatively cheap production and talent costs. In the future the Internet of Things will undoubtedly create more job opportunities across all branches of engineering,” Narayana Murthy, founder of Infosys, told TOI.
