The Nothing ear (1) truly wireless earbuds were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/nothing-makes-its-debut-with-the-launch-of-the-ear-1-truly-wireless-earbuds/articleshow/84789515.cms">launched earlier this week</a> after being teased for several weeks and months. But there’s more to a product than just marketing, more so in a market that is dominated by giants like Apple, Samsung and countless other companies that make audio products for a living. To make a splash, Nothing has gone with an interesting approach – transparent design. Many truly wireless earbuds emulate the AirPods design, while some cut the stem off for a more minimal look. Wrapping of the specs sheet is IPX4 rating, meaning the Nothing ear (1) is sweat and splash resistant. Nothing also has the ear (1) app for both iOS and Android that allows you to tune some additional options if you want to. Most smartphones and laptops – much bigger devices than earbuds – are not well-designed on the inside. That makes the ear (1)’s transparent and clean design all the more impressive. Another aspect that works in ear (1)’s favour is the fact that most truly wireless earbuds in this price range either look the same or they’re boring. Any and every originality, in this scenario, is welcome and a breath of fresh air. Lastly, the ear (1)’s case supports wireless charging, which is an added bonus. I used the ear (1) earbuds with the OnePlus 9 Pro for the most part, and compared it with the Galaxy Buds Plus. I played several tracks, including Gotye’s State Of The Art - the highs and lows were very well balanced, with clear and crisp vocals. For a change of pace, I tried Lorde’s Royals. The voice was well distinguished, and the bass and treble were well balanced, too. To mix it up a bit, I played Imagine Dragons’ Demons, and the ear (1) did not miss a beat. The bass was deep and the vocals were well-distinguished. <div type="image" title="Nothing ear (1) app" msid="84859589" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The ear (1) app lets you manage equalizer and gestures&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The default ‘Balanced’ equalizer sounded the best. If you prefer bass or treble, you can toggle the equalizer in the app. Additionally, there’s a ‘Voice’ option that sounds a lot different and is geared towards voice calling over music. Active noise cancellation works well, but that will result in a battery hit. It is useful in weeding out major noise from vehicles or people talking, but I found some of it still managing to pass through the earbuds. But overall, it worked well. So far, I have used the ear (1) for voice calls and music, spanning over four days. The charge level in the case has dropped to 70%, and this is after one firmware update. My friends reported noticeable disturbance in calls when I was out and about. Nothing says it uses Clear Voice Technology with algorithms to isolate and amplify your voice during calls, but there’s enough room for improvement in this regard. I also faced minor connectivity hiccups, wherein the ear (1) wouldn’t connect automatically, requiring me to manually connect them by going into my phone’s settings. This happened sporadically, and Nothing has released an update to address this. It looks great and unique at a time when most of the alternatives sport the same oval/round cube design. But, in terms of ease of carrying it around, this case is slightly on the bigger side. It goes without saying that in a crowded market of truly wireless earbuds (TWS), it needs something special to mark its name in bold letters. OnePlus had received a lot of praise for its neckband-style Bullets Wireless earbuds. Although the first few budget TWS buds from the company were alright-at-best in comparison with the competition. Priced at ₹9,990, OnePlus Buds Pro are the most expensive earbuds from the company and hence, it comes with modern features like active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless charging, customisable pinch controls and good battery life. I have been using the Buds Pro for more than fifteen days and so far, there's little to complain about. It's the perfect product for OnePlus to claim the fame it had got for its commitment to quality, which was somewhat missing in the recent past and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/oneplus-watch-review-seems-like-a-rush-job-to-join-the-race/articleshow/82052880.cms">OnePlus Watch</a> was a proper case. What makes me say so? For me, the size, pocketability, ease of opening and closing matter more than how the case looks. The case's design is very basic, but is well built, fits very well in the pocket and the matte finish makes it less prone to scratches unlike the more show-focused design and material on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/nothing-ear-1-truly-wireless-earbuds-review/articleshow/84859480.cms">Nothing's ear (1)</a> transparent case. While I liked the form factor and material on the case, it's not easy to open it with one hand. I had to use both hands to open it and initially it was difficult to spot which is the front side until I got used to looking at the 'OnePlus' branding on top. <div type="image" title="IMG_3531" height="900" width="1200" msid="85887661" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The OnePlus Buds Pro have the company logo on top.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Inside the case, the earbuds lay flat, unlike the cheaper OnePlus Buds which have the earbuds slid into the cavity. However, the magnets hold the buds quite well and it's easy to take out and place them into the case. The earbuds look a lot like the Apple Airpods Pro, but it has a dual-tone finish with a matte top and a glossy stem. The fit and comfort are quite impressive compared to the regular Apple Airpods and the Galaxy Buds Pro. Although, this is something that differs as per the user because of the different shapes and sizes of ears. For me, it is among the most comfortable earbuds to wear for a long duration. They're also very lightweight — to put things in perspective one bud weighs 4.35 grams whereas AirPods Pro bud weighs 5.4 grams and Galaxy Buds Pro bud is 6.3 grams. The ANC is comparable to its much more expensive counterparts like the Sony WF-1000XM3 or even Apple Airpods Pro and it's quite impressive for its price. Don't expect it to block loud sounds nearby, but noises like a fan, people talking, and traffic noise is very well filtered at 50% volume. You can adjust between three levels of ANC — faint, smart and extreme — which lets you set the intensity as the name suggests. Smart mode adjusts the noise as per the surrounding, but I preferred 'extreme' in most cases. <div type="image" title="sid." height="900" width="1200" msid="85887746" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Buds Pro are very comfortable and offer an uplifting sound profile. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> As for the audio quality, the Buds Pro will impress those who listen to a lot of RnB, Hip Hop, EDM or essentially any genre that has punch and thump in the melody. While those who like to listen to rock, grunge and similar genres might want to look somewhere else. If you like to host a party in your head, these earbuds can do that with ease as they're loud, bassy and ooze a lot of energy. The mid-bass and sub-bass sound heavy and deep. What's good is that the heaviness of the bass notes doesn't mix with the lower frequencies and vocals to spoil it, but in some tracks, you might find it wobbling, which affects the details and resolution of highs and mids. I listened to almost every song on my playlist ranging from Bollywood, 80s rock to 90s hip hop and everything that falls in between. What I learnt is there are few genres that you'd not want to blast on full volume. For example, tracks like Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana, High and dry by Radiohead sounded impressive to 70% volume, but audiophiles might not enjoy the imperfect sound staging and loss of details when multiple instruments kick in. At higher volumes, instruments like snare and hi-hat mixed with bass guitar sound unpleasant at times, especially with tracks mixed and mastered when production tech wasn't as good. However, songs like Empire State by Jay Z, We're all we need by Above and Beyond and even Kabhi Kabhi Aditi by A R Rahman sound soothing and just how you would like them. Peppy Bollywood numbers and desi hip hop will make you groove in your head. Sadly, there's no option to customise the equaliser otherwise a little tuning might have allowed us to improve the imaging and tonality of tracks where multiple instruments are involved. Overall, the strong bass profile of the OnePlus Buds Pro doesn't upset me and despite the shortcomings, it's the most dynamic sounding earbud in the price range. I own a Sony WF-1000XM3, and I can say the Buds Pro gives me just what I miss on the year-old premium earbuds from Sony. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="How is it to use?" comment="subhead" text="How is it to use?">How is it to use?</cmsannotation> Just like AirPods Pro, you can squeeze the stems on the earbuds to play/pause, skip a song, and return to the previous song. A slightly longer squeeze switches between noise cancellation and transparency modes. While all of it works just how it is intended, I miss volume controls on the earbuds. Every time you want to increase or reduce the volume, you will have to go to the source device to do it. The OnePlus Buds Pro is very easy to pair and start using. There's a Hey Melody app for non-OnePlus users to take control of ANC, sound settings and other features. For OnePlus users, the options are hidden inside Settings &gt; Bluetooth &gt; Media Devices. Within the settings, you get options to choose noise control for ANC on/off, transparency mode, customise pinch controls, options to choose between the Zen Mode audio, do the earbud fit test and take a hearing test to set a custom audio ID for your ear. It also lets you choose between AAC and SBC audio codecs, but I would recommend using AAC. <div type="image" title="IMG_3537" msid="85887776" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The pinch controls work really well on the Buds Pro.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> You can pinch and hold the stem for three seconds to activate Zen Mode Air, which plays a soothing white noise to increase focus and calm your mind. It does work really well, as I had to use it to finally finish writing the review for the buds. Calling and microphone performance is also very impressive. Be it mic, performance, connectivity, range or reception, there hasn't been a single instance of struggle during calls. The battery performance is also surprisingly good. A single charge lasts slightly over 5 hours of listening time with ANC and 28 hours with the case. With ANC turned off, you get around 7 hours and 38 hours with the case. I did not need to charge it for the first week of use, every time I popped them out of the case, they were at 100% battery. However, when I charged them finally, it took only 10 minutes to offer up to 10 hours of listening time. Additionally, you get support for Qi wireless charging, which makes it even more convenient to charge. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Should you buy it? Who is it for?</cmsannotation> It might sound unreal, but the OnePlus Buds can be called the cheaper alternative to the Airpods Pro, and a solid competitor to the Google Pixel Buds A, Oppo Enco X and Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro. The only shortcomings are missing equaliser in the app, no volume control on buds, wobbly bass at high volume, but that's where the negatives end. For someone who loves slapping bass and thumping sound profile, this is the best option in its price range. That topped with features like IPX4 certification, Dolby Atmos support, fast and wireless charging, 94ms latency for gaming, a good battery and excellent call quality, makes for a steal deal at ₹9,990. If you're an audiophile and prefer cleaner definition, imaging and soundstage then you might have to compromise on the loudness, bass and go for a slightly more expensive counterpart or a premium wired earphone. It has segregated its lineup with different alphabets and the Galaxy M-series offers mid-range smartphones with decent performance. Building up on its already popular mid-range series, the company recently launched the <keyword id="12115884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="galaxy-m52-5g" source="Orion">Galaxy M52 5G</keyword> and is marketing it as the leanest and the meanest device. In this review, we will find out whether the claims about the phone are true or just marketing fluff. We will also compare some of its specifications to its predecessor, Galaxy M51. This review talks about the design, display, performance, camera and our final verdict. Let’s dive in to find out everything about the Galaxy M52 5G. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Pricing" comment="subhead" text="Pricing">Pricing</cmsannotation> The Galaxy M52 comes in two variants — 6GB+128GB and 8GB+128GB variants. The 6GB RAM variant is priced at ₹29,999 while the 8GB RAM variant will retail at ₹31,999. The phones are available in two colours — Icy Blue and Blazing Black. The unit we are reviewing is in Blazing Black colour variant and is equipped with 8GB RAM+128GB storage. Samsung is also offering introductory prices of ₹26999 for the 6GB+128GB variant and ₹28999 for the 8GB+128GB during the Amazon Great Indian Festival. However, this offer is for a limited period only. So if you are looking to bring home the Galaxy M52 5G, take advantage of the deal. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Design" comment="subhead" text="Design">Design</cmsannotation> The phone features a polycarbonate body, with a glossy finish. On its black back, it has a striped design featuring silver vertical stripes. Even though the back and sides are made of plastic, the phone still feels very premium to hold. While it claims to be the “leanest” Samsung M-series phone, with its slim profile and a thickness of just 7.4mm, it isn’t the leanest device as Mi 11X lite is only 6.81mm thick. It feels lightweight in the hands weighing just 173g, however, the Mi 11X Lite only weighs 159g. The rear camera bump is protruding off the body and is placed on the left side of the back. It houses a triple camera setup, unlike its predecessor which has a quad-camera set-up. On the front, we have the 32 MP front camera that is accommodated in a punch-hole type cut out at the top of the display. The bezels around the display are fairly thin. On the right side, we have the volume buttons at the top and the power button just below it. This makes you take screenshots using two hands since you have to click the volume down and power button simultaneously and both are on the same side. The power button also houses the fingerprint scanner which is very snappy. The phone also has a face-recognition sensor, but it isn’t as responsive as the fingerprint scanner. <div type="image" title="Volume Rocker" msid="86866857" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The volume buttons and the power button are on the right side.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>On the left side we have the SIM tray that has a hybrid design meaning you can either have two SIM cards or one SIM and one MicroSD card for additional storage. The audio isn’t very loud from the speakers that do not offer stereo support and you will need headphones or speakers to enjoy content, which is anyway recommended if you want the best experience. While I have moved on to wireless headphones, I still like using my wired earphones when the other ones are charging. And not being able to connect them to this Galaxy M52 device is annoying at times. Interestingly, its predecessor, the Galaxy M51, did feature the 3.5mm audio jack. Again, it might not be an issue for many users, but if for you it is, then you can look at Realme X7 Max 5G in the same price range. Overall, the phone feels good in the hands and single-handle operation is comfortable. The phone is sleek and is lightweight, but the back does catch fingerprints and using a back cover is recommended. Design-wise, the only negatives would be its audio features; lack of 3.5mm jack and poor sound quality from the speakers. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Display" comment="subhead" text="Display">Display</cmsannotation> The display is one of its superior features. It is equipped with a 6.7-inch FHD+ sAMOLED+ Infinity-O display that comes with a <keyword id="8793349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="120hz-refresh-rate" source="Orion">120Hz refresh rate</keyword>. The refresh rate can be set to standard 60Hz by going to Settings &gt; Display and tapping motion smoothness. With 120Hz refresh rate, it offers smooth scrolling and transitions. The AMOLED display supports up to 1080 x 2400 (FHD+) resolution and delivers beautiful vivid picture quality by default. I am having a good time with this phone’s display as I can catch the daily news with the Eye comfort shield that filters the blue light and reduces strain on eyes. Watching videos on YouTube and OTT platforms is truly an amazing experience given the picture clarity and sharpness. Even while playing games, the display offers clarity and with its 120Hz refresh rate the experience is quite smooth. It was easy to spot opponents in battle royale games and first person shooter games in general. The picture quality and the clarity of the display delivers an enjoyable gaming experience. The Galaxy M52 5G’s has Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the display that should offer some amount of protection from scratches and accidental drops. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Performance" comment="subhead" text="Performance">Performance</cmsannotation> The Galaxy M52 5G is powered by a competent mid-range processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset. It offers consistent performance across the system and applications. The apps load in no time, and I did not experience any lag while switching between them or searching for them. I found the performance of the phone to be exceptionally good while gaming or streaming content from OTT platforms. <div type="image" title="Back" msid="86867052" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>I encountered an issue where the M52 did struggle a bit. While all the devices in my room had no issues connecting to my 5GHz WiFi connection, the M52 did show sign of poor connectivity, which was due to the range as it improved as I moved closer to the router. Samsung and other smartphone makers are now providing 5G support to mid-range and budget smartphones, and with this Galaxy M52, you get support for 11 bands of 5G. However, 5G is yet to roll out in India and you will not be able to use this feature any time soon in the country. The 5G support makes it future proof and also allows you to use the feature when you travel to a country that supports the 5G network. Gaming I tried games like Asphalt 9 and Battlegrounds Mobile India, and the performance of the phone was quite incredible. Both the fast chipset and good quality display combine to offer crisp and vibrant graphics that help in gaming. There was no lag or frame drop instance while playing any of these highly demanding games. It did get warm but I did not experience abnormal heating after playing for 45 minutes to an hour. It may heat up if played for longer but I cannot be certain since I did not test it yet. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Battery" comment="subhead" text="Battery">Battery</cmsannotation> There is a significant drop in battery capacity from its predecessor. The Galaxy M51 was equipped with a gigantic 7,000mAh battery while this Galaxy M52 comes with a 5,000mAh battery, which is still massive. However, this is quite impressive for this device since its thickness is claimed to be reduced by 21%. In terms of performance, the battery life is impressive as it gave me over 9 hours of screen time with mixed usage including light gaming, streaming and web-browsing. The phone comes with a 15W charger in the box, which takes about two hours to recharge the battery fully from under 10% charge. Nevertheless, the phone is compatible with a 25W Samsung charger that should improve the charging time significantly. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Camera" comment="subhead" text="Camera">Camera</cmsannotation> Interestingly, Samsung has reduced the number of camera sensors on this Galaxy M52 compared to its predecessor. The rear camera module features a 64MP primary sensor, 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 5MP Macro sensor. The 5MP depth sensor that was available on its predecessor, Galaxy M51, is missing on this device. <div type="image" title="Rear Camera" msid="86867077" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The rear camera module features a 64MP primary sensor, 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 5MP Macro sensor. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>The camera offers fairly accurate daylight performance with the primary sensor. The pictures have high dynamic range, sharp focus and clarity. The ultra-wide lens also captures a large field of view and delivers decent performance during the day. More light and colour is captured in the Night mode than the regular photo mode. The phone doesn’t come with optical image stabilisation and the output can come out shaking at times if the phone is not held stably. For better results., using a tripod while shooting videos is recommended. The colour reproduction during the day was very accurate, while at night, the colours were faded, which is a common issue in smartphone cameras. <div type="image" title="Wide Angle Night mode" msid="86867189" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Ultra-wide in Night mode&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>You can shoot videos with the front camera in the same resolutions and frame rates as that with the rear camera. I shot videos in 4K 30fps mode, and the footage captured details however the output becomes grainy when you zoom in. Using the same mode, you click images with an ultra-wide sensor and digitally zoom up to 10x. Then we have the video mode to record footage. There is a Single Take mode that can capture a moment in various ways including, a panoramic view, regular view and a video. The Fun mode is integrated with Snapchat filters and allows you to click images with funny backgrounds and virtual props. To explore other modes, you will have to click on More, where you can access Pro Mode, to set the auto-focus, white balance, ISO, aperture and other settings to click pictures like a professional. Other modes here include macro, portrait, hyperlapse, slow motion video and panorama. The camera app is very responsive when you open it. Switch between modes is also smooth and the camera loading time after clicking an image or recording a video is remarkably low. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Software" comment="subhead" text="Software">Software</cmsannotation> The Galaxy M52 5G comes with Samsung One UI 3.1 running on Android 11. The UI is very clean and offers plenty of customisation options. You can choose from plenty of widgets that can be added to your home screen. There are plenty of themes and wallpapers options that users can use to personalise the phone. Users can also change the layout of how apps will appear and how many apps will appear in each line. The phone comes with pre-installed applications that are both native and third-party apps like Moj, Daily Hunt, Byjus, Josh, Amazon and others. While you can delete most unwanted applications, you will not be able to delete system apps like the Clock, Calculator, Gallery and others that are needed for the smooth functioning of its software. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Verdict" comment="subhead" text="Verdict">Verdict</cmsannotation> The Samsung Galaxy M52 5G has seen a major upgrade from its predecessor. The display, performance and camera are all above-average. The phone does lack some places such as the missing 3.5mm jack, no stereo speakers for audio and mediocre macro lens. Most of these are not a deal breaker for many. So overall it's a fairly good deal for the price and it gets better if you can get it during a sale. However, you should note that there are plenty of other options from its competitors, such as the OnePlus Nord 2 , Mi 11X and Realme X7 Max . While the OnePlus Nord 2 and the Realme X7 Max have the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset, the Mi 11X has the Snapdragon 870 which are slightly more efficient than the Snapdragon 778G chipset used in the Galaxy M52, the battery life is better on M52, it's the lightest among its competitors and also offers same, if not better, camera performance than its competitors.
