<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><p class="source">Kickstarter</p></div></div>The Emotiv team are veterans when it comes to brainwave-reading headsets.</p>
<p>Back in 2010, the company presented a rough version of what would later transform into the Insight, demonstrating with a <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/tan_le_a_headset_that_reads_your_brainwaves.html">TED talk</a> the possibilities of the technology.</p>
<p>And now Emotiv is back, with a new Insight headset and a <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tanttle/emotiv-insight-optimize-your-brain-fitness-and-per">Kickstarter</a> that has already blown past its crowdfunding goal of $100,000 — our last count had the campaign at over $250,000.</p>
<p>But how does it work, and what can it do?</p>
<p>The Insight is a sleeker, more advanced version of the headset presented at the TED conference. Utilizing five sensors that attach to your head, the Insight monitors the electrical impulses that your brain releases, turning this information into usable data.</p>
<p>For example, if you were playing a video game and wanted to map a brain command to make your character run forward, you could hypothetically record yourself visualizing the 'forward' command.</p>
<p>Once the Insight headset can recognize your 'forward' thought, it could be taught to move your game character forward each time you think it.</p>
<p>Besides being able to recognize up to four mental commands, the Insight can also turn facial expressions such as winking, smiling, and blinking into commands.</p>
<p>Gaming is only one aspect of what the Insight is capable of — the company is billing the Insight as a device to "<span>optimize your brain fitness &amp; performance, measure and monitor your own or your family’s cognitive health &amp; wellbeing, and develop amazing new applications."</span></p>
<p>And while applications implementing direct integration with the Insight are scarce, Emotiv is hoping that a successful Kickstarter will put enough developer units in people's hands early enough to have a solid app selection upon launch.</p>

Kickstarter Project Raises $250,000 For A Gadget That Reads Your Brainwaves

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot/IBM</span></p><p class="caption">IBM engineer Joshua Carr and his BB-8.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Earlier this week<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/ibm-engineer-builds-a-mind-controlled-bb-8-2016-1" target="_blank"> Business Insider reported</a> that an IBM programmer managed to successfully take control of a BB-8 droid from "Star Wars" with his mind and a brain reader.</p><p>That programmer was Joshua Carr, a lead engineer at IBM, who happens to have an interest in the internet of things (IoT) - connecting everyday items to the internet.</p><p>Carr claims that brain readers could be used for a number of other tasks in future if programmers put their minds to it. </p><p>To move the BB-8, Carr used a consumer headset that can read brain waves, known as the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/headset-transform-paralyzed-people-2014-7">Emotiv Insight</a>, as well as some under the hood plumbing from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ibms-brilliant-move-with-swift-2015-12">IBM's cloud computing platform</a>.</p><p>We decided to ask Carr why he decided to try and take control of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/review-sphero-bb-8-from-star-wars-the-force-awakens-2015-9">BB-8 app-powered droid</a> and what else the Emotiv Insight and devices like it can be used for.</p><p>Speaking to Business Insider via email, Carr said: "Being a huge 'Star Wars' fan, and having done lots of development in the 'Internet of things' (IoT) it was pretty easy for me to look at the new BB-8 toy and want to connect it to the internet so it can be controlled from anywhere.</p><p>"The biggest question was, what was I going to use to control it? I could easily connect my phone, my Twitter account, or my laptop. But they all seemed a bit… boring. Instead I decided to connect it to an Emotiv Insight that had been kickstarted and shipped, but I'd not found the time to use -yet! This gave me the perfect 'excuse' to stay up late one evening to connect it all together."</p><p>Carr claims that the Insight device is arguably the best and most affordable "brain reader" currently available. It's also more comfortable than other brain readers as it has just five contacts, compared to 14 on the <a href="https://emotiv.com/epoc.php" target="_blank">EPOC headset</a>, which is made by the same company.</p><p>"I've worn it [the Insight] for hours at a time, too," Carr said. "Which was probably what surprised me. It really surprised the checkout assistant at my local store too when I'd forgotten I was still wearing it!"</p><h2>Healthcare uses</h2><p>Carr believes the Insight device and others like it will play an increasingly important role in the future.</p><p>"For healthcare and people who have disabilities - it's a no-brainer (sorry). We're going to start to see IoT encompassing more and more of our lives," he said. </p><p>Carr also highlighted that people could pair brain readers with internet-connected items in their home, as well using them for other scenarios.</p><p>"Keep the headset, and swap out the BB-8 to control the temperature of my home, make me a fresh coffee on my drive home, and let my friends know I'm running late," he said. "What about: Keep the BB-8, but swap out the headset to a Twitter stream and have BB-8 react to my tweets, or keep both the headset and have the Twitter stream. It all depends on what's meaningful to each individual. The underlying technology stays the same and that's the power of IoT.
