<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>'s "Umbrella Academy" showrunner Steve Blackman talked with Business Insider about how season two used the show's budget "more effectively."</li><li>Blackman teased plans for future seasons and said he already knows what season three would be about if Netflix renews it.</li><li>He also discussed the deviations from the comic book source material by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.</li></ul><p><strong><em>Warning: This post contains spoilers for "<keyword id="7418543" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Umbrella-Academy">The Umbrella Academy</keyword>" season two</em></strong></p><p>When Netflix's comic-book series "The Umbrella Academy" debuted last year, it was an instant hit.</p><p>Netflix said that the show, based on the Dark Horse comic of the same name by writer Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá, was watched by 45 million member households in its first month of release, making it one of its most popular shows ever.</p><p>So expectations are high for season two, which debuted on the <keyword id="572624" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Streaming">streaming</keyword> giant on Friday. But showrunner Steve Blackman said that the show's popularity didn't change his plans for the second season. He always knew that he wanted it to be bigger in scope.</p><p>"The goal was always to step it up a little more but without losing what makes our show entertaining," Blackman told Business Insider.</p><p>Critics are already loving the season, which has a 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. With the show's popularity, it would be surprising if Netflix didn't renew it for a third season — and Blackman already knows what it would be about.</p><p>In his interview with Business Insider, Blackman teased future plans and talked about how season two deviates from the comic book. </p><p><strong>Read the full interview below:</strong></p><p><strong><div type="image" title="the umbrella academy" height="1394" width="2394" msid="77287819" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><em>This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p><strong>Travis Clark: The scope of this season feels bigger. After the popularity of the first season, did anything change from your initial plans for season two?</strong></p><p><strong>Steve Blackman</strong>: I had a pretty good sense of what season two was as I was finishing season one before we had even gotten picked up [for a second season]. I wanted the storytelling to feel bigger in season two and we stepped it up with the VFX and honed our craft a little more with that. And I think we told bigger, more rounded stories. We dealt with bigger issues this year, like what it would be like to be a person of color in the South [in 1960s America] and homophobia in that time period.</p><p>So the goal was always to step it up a little more but without losing what makes our show entertaining as this wonderful show about family dysfunction.</p><p><strong>Clark: You mentioned that you stepped it up with VFX ... did Netflix throw more money at you after the first season was so popular?</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: [laughs] I think there was a bit of an increase but we used our money more effectively. In the first season we were testing things out and trying different things, but once we got the rhythm of the show, in season two we were more effective in how we did things. </p><p>The Dallas street [the setting for much of the season, including the restaurant where the sit-in protest takes place] was actually shot in a town in northern Ontario. It has no VFX treatment, it really looks like that. We just did physical changes on the storefronts. But we decided that if we could find a place like that where we didn't have to spend a lot of money, we could spend that money more on A.J. Carmichael, young Pogo, and other things.</p><p>We did actually go to Dallas to film on the Grassy Knoll, so there's obviously VFX treatment in the Kennedy motorcade, but the setting is all real. We were very careful about how we spent our money this year.</p><p><strong>Clark: Allison's [played by Emmy Raver-Lampman] story [as a Civil Rights activist] this season takes on new meaning after recent events. Has that been on your mind leading up to the premiere of the season?</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: Yeah. We wrote the show a year ago, but I knew we couldn't tell a story set in Dallas in 1963 and not address the racial issues and homophobia of the time period. We did an enormous amount of research, especially for the sit-in scene. It wasn't based on any one sit-in, it was an amalgamation of many sit-ins, but it was an emotional few days to shoot that scene. We wanted it to feel real and to tell an honest story about this time period and racial injustice.</p><p><div type="image" title="the umbrella academy" height="1388" width="2018" msid="77287826" hostid="261"></div></p><p><strong>Clark: One of my favorite aspects of the show is the musical cues. Were there any that were your favorites and how did those come to be?</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: Music is a big part of my life and I see it as another character in this show. On most shows, they shoot it and then put music in afterwards. I pick the songs ahead of time. I encourage the writers to include them in the scripts. If I think of a song, I'll write a scene because of that song. So I know pretty much ahead of time all the music that will be used in the season and we like to use music that will subvert expectations.</p><p>For instance, the Backstreet Boys song probably shouldn't fit in that fight scene and that sequence, but it does magically work. It was fun to think of what lyric Klaus would steal from a song in the future and tell his followers "here's an inspirational quote of mine." Those are some of my favorites but I love all the music. </p><p><strong>Clark: I'm a big fan of the comic but respect the deviations the show takes from it.  I wanted to walk through some of those and how they came to be, like the Sissy and Harlan storyline, introducing Lila, and even Diego's powers, which aren't really explained in the comic but in the final episode we see him slow down those bullets.</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: The source material is a great springboard and I have a great relationship with Gerard [Way, the writer] and Gabriel [Bá, the artist]. But we realized early on that it couldn't be a carbon copy. There were a lot of things we couldn't afford to do even with a feature budget. They've been kind of enough to allow me to deviate, as a <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> creator, and do what I want to do. I'm always extremely respectful of the graphic novels. Like, I couldn't not do A.J. Carmichael this year. That was something I was striving to do and the VFX company Weta came through with that.</p><p>But it's a TV world and it's necessary for us to create some other characters. Lila was a lot of fun, because the premise of the comic was that there were 43 mothers out there who gave birth to 43 [superpowered] kids. It was great to meet another one of those kids this year, and it's fair to say we could meet some others.</p><p>With Diego, his powers aren't really defined, but we thought "if you can curve and bend metallic objects like knives, why can't you do that to bullets?" But all of their powers are still evolving. They never finished their training with their dad because the family broke up. I think as long as the show is on the air we're going to show that their powers are always evolving and they're discovering new bits of their powers.</p><p><div type="image" title="the umbrella academy" height="1284" width="1842" msid="77287832" hostid="261"></div></p><p><strong>Clark: Especially Vanya's [played by Ellen Page] powers, and her story really goes in a new direction this season. How did the relationship with Sissy come to be? That's the heart of the season and you realize that by the final episode. Did you always know, even looking back to season one, that you wanted to flesh out Vanya's storyline with this new character?</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: Her love story in season one wasn't a real love story. In season two, her memory is gone and she's coming into her own, so I wanted her to have a beautiful love story, but I needed to complicate it, too. Being gay or queer in 1963 was a criminal offense, but also, Sissy has a family and a kid who can't speak, which is similar to my son. My son's on the spectrum. </p><p>Ellen and I talked a lot about the LGBT storyline and how to tell a sweet love story but with all of these layers to it. And all of their powers come from something inside of them and Vanya inadvertently gives Harlan [Sissy's son] her powers when she saves his life. So the origin of their powers is something we may explore later on, too.</p><p><strong>Clark: Did Ellen and the other actors give a lot of feedback for their characters' storylines this season?</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: I always welcome their input. I talk with all of them about their storylines before and during the season. Ellen had many thoughts, all good, and a lot of that story we crafted together, especially the ending. Ellen really wanted to tell a story that still had hope in the end and wasn't a tragic queer love story. [Vanya and Sissy] aren't together in the end, but had they not separated they would have stayed together for many years. But yeah, the ending is definitely something Ellen and I talked about a lot and I think that's what made it beautiful in the end. </p><p><strong>Clark: You've mentioned a few things you'd want to explore in later seasons and season two ends on a big cliffhanger. Have you heard from Netflix about a third season?</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: We haven't gotten picked up yet but I definitely know what it would be about. My fingers are crossed.</p><p><strong>Clark: Do you have a longterm vision for the series or taking it one season at a time?</strong></p><p><strong>Blackman</strong>: I'm taking it one season at a time. With that said, I know Gerard has many volumes in his mind of what he wants to do and he's working on volume four [of the comic series] now. So as long as Gerard has ideas for the future, I like to think we could do at least four seasons. But I know season three and I'll worry about the next season as it comes. </p>

It starts somewhere in the bowels of the Sony offices, and I'm hearing in the distance faint sounds of yelling and loud banging. As I get closer, I realize the noises are coming from inside a glass-walled board room. I peek at what's going on inside and see writer-director Jason Reitman standing on the table, yelling at executives, while behind him Hugh Jackman is in full Wolverine berserker mode throwing chairs, a sofa, and trays of finger food set up for the meeting.</p><p>Okay, I never had this dream. It's more of a fantasy I have of how Reitman and Jackman reacted during the nonexistent release Sony's Columbia Pictures gave their movie, "The Front Runner."</p><p>In a year when the field of Oscar contenders is so wide open, I'm still puzzled how this movie is on the outside looking in.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong></em>: <em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hugh-jackman-the-front-runner-movie-captured-tabloid-scandal-that-changed-politics-2018-9">Inside how "The Front Runner" starring Hugh Jackman captured the tabloid affair scandal that changed politics forever</a></em></p><p>In "The Front Runner," Reitman takes the sex scandal that flatlined the presidential campaign of Senator Gary Hart in 1987 and delivers a Robert-Altman-esque satire that explores the insanity of political campaigns and the start of reporters digging deep into the personal lives of those running for the highest office in the land. This is all done with some of the best writing in any movie this year. And Jackman delivers one of the best performances of his career.</p><p>But you wouldn't know anything about that, because you probably didn't get a chance to see the movie.</p><p>Columbia played it in theaters for six weeks, but its highest theater count was around Thanksgiving on only 800 screens. It ended up making just <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&amp;id=thefrontrunner.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$2 million</a>. I mean, honestly, did you ever see any advertising for this movie? But this had already happened to him this year!</p><p>In May, Reitman's movie "Tully" - in which he teamed once again with his "Juno" screenwriter Diablo Cody and had Charlize Theron (like Jackman, giving one of her best performances ever) in the lead playing a woman navigating the challenges of being a mother - also had a blink-and-you-missed-it release.</p><p>It wasn't quite at the level of "The Front Runner." Focus Features at least gave it a marketing push and opened it on over 1,300 screens. The movie also had a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/tully_2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">85% rating</a> on Rotten Tomatoes. But it's likely you didn't see this movie, which was in theaters for five weeks, because "Avengers: Infinity War" had just come out the weekend before and had taken over the zeitgeist. The plan was probably that "Tully" would serve as a counter-programming release to the Marvel blockbuster. But instead it was forgotten, only making $9.3 million domestically, and <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&amp;id=tully2018.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$15.5 million worldwide</a>.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong></em>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diablo-cody-explains-how-the-challenges-of-parenthood-inspired-tully-2018-5"><em>Diablo Cody took inspiration from her own parenting struggles to write "Tully" - her best movie since "Juno"</em></a></p><p>Jason Reitman's work has always been an acquired taste, but when he finds the right material his movies are powerful works. He hit it out of the park with 2007's "Juno," which led to a best original screenplay Oscar win for Cody and nominations for both Reitman and star Ellen Page. Reitman then captured Clooney at his leading man zenith with 2009's "Up in the Air," which was nominated for six Oscars, including another directing nomination for Reitman and best picture.</p><p>Both "Tully" and "The Front Runner" are as good (arguably better) than Reitman's most well-known titles and both show his growth as a filmmaker.</p><p>In "Tully," Reitman uses Cody's words and story structure to weave one of the most honest looks at parenthood you'll ever see.</p><p>Stressed, tired, and at the end of her rope with everyone in her life, Marlo (Theron) hires a nanny, Tully (Mackenzie Davis), whose specialty is to work overnight and take care of a newborn while the mom gets some much needed sleep. The mom then wakes up to a clean house and is recharged to take care of the kids during the day. Gradually, Reitman peels the layers to show that what the audience is watching is not reality as much as the world Marlo has created through her state of exhaustion.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c264fc2bd773058995ccad3-1200/tully focus features final.jpg" border="0" alt="tully Focus Features final" data-mce-source="Focus Features" /><p class="source"><span>Focus Features</span></p><p class="caption">Charlize Theron in "Tully."</p></div><p></p></div></div>You might read this and say, "Sounds too serious for me." Okay, but the biggest movie in the world this year was about a giant purple guy who eliminated half of the world's population with just the snap of his fingers. So I think you can take it!</p><p>While "Tully" is very much Reitman being the vessel for Cody's powerful story, in "The Front Runner," he's the driving force.</p><p>Reitman shared screenwriting duties with political columnist Matt Bai (who wrote the book the movie is based on) and political strategist Jay Carson. Together the trio dived into the weeks leading up to Senator Gary Hart dropping out of the presidential race in 1987. What resulted is an authentically told look at not just how Hart's reported affair crippled his campaign, but how campaign trail life is. Reitman tells the story at a fast pace, with most of the shots featuring the cast talking over one another and the camera moving around showing the numerous things going on at the same time. It's highlighted by the movie's opening: Reitman does a long uncut shot that begins at a news truck delivering election results, and weaves through a crowded street, ending high above the action with a political aide of Hart's looking outside a hotel window.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c264f63bd7730592f4faab8-2000/hugh jackman jeason reitman getty.jpg" border="0" alt="Hugh Jackman Jeason Reitman Getty" data-mce-source="Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">(L-R) Hugh Jackman and Jason Reitman.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The movie is a mixture of Robert Altman's overlapping dialogue style mixed with the naturalistic cinematography found in early Michael Ritchie movies like "Downhill Racer" or "The Candidate."</p><p>And then there's the performance given by Jackman as Hart. Hart is a man who has become a beacon for young voters to get behind with his good looks and platform that is different than most preached by the political establishment. And Jackman plays him as someone who doesn't like the political game but knows he has to do it to make the change he wants possible. When he's confronted with the affair news, Jackman then perfectly plays the crippling effect of a front runner relegated to tabloid fodder.</p><p>"The Front Runner" is Reitman's most unique movie yet, and is a fascinating evolution to see after the strong work he did on "Tully."</p><p>But you probably wouldn't know that.</p><p>Sure, my fantasy of Reitman and Jackman making a big stink is probably just that. Director Jason Reitman made 2 of the year's best movies. But you probably didn't see them.

As a result, narratives shape public perception, sometimes to great societal detriment.  </li><li>When actor Jussie Smollett claimed to have been savagely attacked, many lawmakers, celebrities, and media outlets immediately ran with the story. </li><li>Smollett's claims have since come into question, but not before the alleged attack was deemed by many influencers as emblematic of the racism, homophobia, and violence of the Trump era. </li><li>In 1989, Donald Trump himself infamously used a savage crime to push a narrative that "CIVIL LIBERTIES END WHEN AN ATTACK ON OUR SAFETY BEGINS!" - even though the accused were later proven innocent. </li><li>Many lawmakers, with public support, nonetheless ran with that narrative to justify draconian increases in prison sentencing.</li><li>Rather than take up rhetorical arms against our political adversaries, we ought to calmly, soberly look deeper into the facts and exercise patience. Think of it as a civic exercise in due process.</li></ul><p>Due process doesn't exist in the court of public opinion.</p><p>The cops don't read you your rights. If you can't afford a crisis response public relations team, none will be provided. There are no fair trials. </p><p>When <a href="https://www.thisisinsider.com/category/jussie-smollett">Jussie Smollett</a>, a gay African-American actor on the Fox TV show "Empire," went public with a story that he had been viciously attacked near his home in Chicago, public opinion went full kangaroo court.</p><p>The details were horrifying. Smollett said he had been beaten, an unknown chemical poured on him, a noose placed around his neck. He said his attackers shouted racist and homophobic epithets and "this is MAGA country" - a reference to President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan - before fleeing the scene just as suddenly as they had arrived. </p><p>Very few people publicly questioned Smollett's assertions, even those that seemed difficult to believe. The actor claimed he had just purchased a Subway sandwich after a long plane flight, and was on the phone with his manager at 2AM, outdoors, on a historically cold night in Chicago when his masked attackers recognized the supporting actor on a TV show about the hip hop music industry, and set upon him.</p><h2>"Connect the dots. This is what happens..."</h2><p>Presidential candidates and Senators <a href="https://twitter.com/KamalaHarris/status/1090361495119187969">Kamala Harris</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/CoryBooker/status/1090341255786184704">Cory Booker</a> described the attack as an "attempted modern day lynching." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted (and <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/technology/businessinsider/article/Nancy-Pelosi-deleted-a-tweet-supporting-Jussie-13624911.php">has since deleted</a>), "The racist homophobic attack on @JussieSmollett is an affront to our humanity."</p><p>Superstar freshman Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York <a href="https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1090491674575454208">tweeted</a>, "This attack was not 'possibly' homophobic. It was a racist and homophobic attack."</p><p>Actress <a href="https://jezebel.com/ellen-page-asks-viewers-to-connect-the-dots-between-hom-1832259492">Ellen Page</a> laid responsibility on Vice President Mike Pence's opposition to gay marriage and past support of gay conversion therapy in an appearance on the "Late Show." "Connect the dots. This is what happens," Page told host Stephen Colbert.</p><p><span><a href="https://twitter.com/GMA/status/1095830389317234688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1095830389317234688&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fgoodmorningamerica.com%2Fculture%2Fstory%2Fjussie-smollett-tells-abc-news-robin-roberts-pissed-61047347">During an interview</a> with ABC's Robin Roberts, Smollett said he had no doubt the two figures in surveillance photo released by the Chicago PD were the men who attacked him. </span><span></span></p><p>Now that two brothers - one of whom worked as Smollett's personal trainer - <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/brothers-told-police-smollett-was-upset-threatening-letter-didnt-get-enough-attention-staged-attack/5143364/">have reportedly told police</a> Smollett paid them to orchestrate the attack, the entire narrative has dramatically shifted.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: </em><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nancy-pelosi-deletes-tweet-supporting-empire-actor-jussie-smollett-2019-2">Nancy Pelosi deleted a tweet supporting Jussie Smollett after reports that he may have staged his assault</a></em></p><p>Some in the media <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/tv/white-vox-writer-sneers-at-black-cnn-panelist-youre-an-expert-on-hate-crimes/">have argued</a> that whether or not Smollett cynically staged his own attack is beside the point; what's important is keeping the focus on hate crimes perpetrated against marginalized communities who some insist are under siege <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-fbi-report-shows-17-percent-spike-in-hate-crimes-in-2017-2018-11">in a wave of Trump-era</a> racism, homophobia, and violence. </p><p>But it's possible to do two things at once. One can continue to shine light on crimes of bias and discriminatory policies, and still come away from this fiasco of a story with something resembling a "teachable moment."</p><h2>Narrative and consequence</h2><p>In 1989, a young woman was brutally raped, beaten within an inch of her life, and left for dead in New York City. "The Central Park jogger," as she came to be known in the press, was an era-defining victim at a time when New York, and the United States, were experiencing near-historic high crime rates. </p><p>At the time, then-real estate developer and local celebrity Donald Trump - with his trademark flair for the hyperbolic - <a href="https://sites.psu.edu/donahuercl/2016/10/18/central-park-five/">placed a full-page ad</a> in New York's major newspapers, including The New York Times, and called for the re-reinstatement of the death penalty.</p><p>Though his assertion that "muggers and murderers ... <span>should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, should be executed for their crimes" has received much of the attention in the years since, <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/12/donald-trump-death-penalty/420069/">it's another line in that ad</a> that's always curled my spine: "</span>Criminals must be told that their CIVIL LIBERTIES END WHEN AN ATTACK ON OUR SAFETY BEGINS!"</p><p>Trump's cultural influence in 1989 was nowhere near what it would become post-"The Apprentice," but his rage was hardly out of step with public opinion at the time, and is an example of how cultural forces set narratives that then become entrenched in both media coverage and policy. </p><p>The five African-American teenage boys arrested for the assault on the Central Park jogger became cultural symbols of their own, emblematic of the incorrigible "superpredators" - to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0uCrA7ePno">borrow Hillary Clinton's term</a> - that inspired the 1994 Crime Bill and helped exacerbate the US' ever-growing mass incarceration tragedy. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c6d6fc61631a36095248822-1545/screen shot 2015-03-23 at 44421 pm.png" border="0" alt="Central Park Five" data-mce-source="YouTube via Sundance Selects" data-link="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK1r9YHnfxc" /></div></div></div> </p><p>The "Central Park Five" were <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/20/nyregion/5-exonerated-in-central-park-jogger-case-are-to-settle-suit-for-40-million.html">proven innocent in 2002</a>, absolved by DNA evidence and the confession of a convicted rapist and murderer who admitted being the lone assailant. But the exoneration came too late to keep them from lengthy prison sentences, or from the incorrect public perception of the crime itself being used to cement a destructive narrative with consequences still being felt today. </p><p>It never mattered at the time whether the Five were innocent, what Trump (and much of the public) demanded was that the narrative be hardened, and policy affected as a result. </p><h2>Due process for public opinion (in theory)<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-usps-investigate-letter-sent-to-jussie-smollett-reports-2019-2"></a></h2><p>In the case of Jussie Smollett, it seems unlikely any innocent people will be arrested for a crime they didn't commit. But who's to say what could have happened if two men fitting the description of the figures in the surveillance footage were brought in for a police lineup? </p><p>Would the police have felt the need to arrest somebody, anybody, to comfort a public growling for justice? It's not as if police are never unduly influenced by political pressures, <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/glanton/ct-met-rahm-emanuel-dahleen-glanton-laquan-mcdonald-20180905-story.html">particularly in Chicago.</a></p><p>Thankfully, Jussie Smollett is getting due process under the law, with the Chicago PD's investigation still ongoing. If he is truly the victim of the crime he claims, we can only hope the perpetrators are held accountable. Similarly, if he did fabricate this assault and create a nationwide furor, then he too should face justice. </p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: </em><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-usps-investigate-letter-sent-to-jussie-smollett-reports-2019-2">The FBI and US Postal Service are reportedly investigating threatening letter sent to Jussie Smollett</a></em></p><p>Washington Post columnist <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2019/02/18/capehart_jussie_smollett_case_fit_in_with_a_reality_under_trump_that_a_lot_of_people_wanted_to_believe.html">Jonathan Capehart</a> said on MSNBC Monday that "<span>a reality for a lot of people in this country since President Trump was inaugurated, that there is an atmosphere of menace and an atmosphere of hate around the country that made it possible for people to either readily believe or want to believe Jussie Smollett."</span></p><p>Everyone is informed by their own experience, and sometimes a "narrative" is simply the truth. But it's  unreasonable to presume an outrageous story is unimpeachable just because it conforms to a narrative that feeds one's perceptions. </p><p>When the narratives surrounding outrageous crimes prove false, they can still shape public perception in dangerous ways. Not only is there a less-than-zero chance innocent people could be directly harmed by false stories that inflame the public, but they also have a way of infecting <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword> and policy, with consequences that can last decades longer than the 24-hour news cycle. </p><p>Even if due process in public opinion will only ever be theoretical, it's far healthier for society than instant mass fury.</p><p>Rather than take up rhetorical arms against our political adversaries, we ought to calmly, soberly look deeper into the facts and exercise patience. <p>"Who cares about funny? Kids don't laugh anymore," said O'Brien. "They see celebrities and they go 'Woo.'"</p>
<p>Just like that, the late-night host attempted to get 50 celebrity cameos on screen. </p>

<p>In the suit, Lohan claims that character Lacey Jonas is an "unequivocal" reference to the actress, depicting her image, voice, and styles from<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> her clothing line. The game even shows the character avoiding paparazzi outside of the<span> Chateau Marmont Hotel, where Lohan once lived.</span></span></p>

<p>But the part Lohan has a real problem with is during a gameplay moment when the Lacey <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Jonas character hides from paparazzi and gets frustrated when someone doesn't recognize her to help her. </span></p>

I didn't do anything - this is my average commute ... <span>I am so fat, oh my God, they cannot get a shot of me! </span><span>How's my hair? Do I look cute?"</span></span></p>
<p>Lohan's suit claims<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> that Rockstar Games used her image for the in-game character of Lacey, "an anorexic actress constantly on the run from voracious celebrity photographers and fans," according to <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/lindsay-lohan-suing-gta-star-isnt-claiming-shes-bikini-girl-rockstar-suit-1618202" target="_blank">International Business Times</a>.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Take-Two Interactive Software and Rockstar Games have declined comment on the lawsuit, but <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2014/07/02/lindsay-lohan-sues-grand-theft-auto-v-maker/" target="_blank">Forbes "doubts the case has legs,"</a> considering "t<span>he character in question was not specifically Lohan, and engages in entirely fictional activities that are designed to parody a certain type of celebrity."</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Forbes then cited the </span><a href="http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/using-name-or-likeness-another">Digital Media Law Project</a> to back up their stance<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">: </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"As a general matter, you will not be held liable for using someone's name or likeness in a creative, entertaining, or artistic work that is </span><strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">transformative</strong><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, meaning that you add some substantial creative element over and above the mere depiction of the person. In other words, the First Amendment ordinarily protects you if you use someone's name or likeness to create something new that is recognizably your own, rather than something that just evokes and exploits the person's identity."</span></p>
<p>But this isn't the first time an actress has called out a video game for allegedly using her likeness. Last year, Ellen Page accused the makers of "The Last of Us" of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ellen-page-the-last-of-us-2013-6" target="_blank">using her likeness</a> for a character named "Ellie."</p>
<p>Page later said on <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1gxgfx/i_am_actress_ellen_page_amaa/caoslna" target="_blank">Reddit</a>: "I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called "Beyond Two Souls," so it was not appreciated."</p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/558d8e5d69bedde861daa4a1-1200-924/gay-marriage-43.jpg?maxX=600" border="0" alt="Gay Marriage" width="600"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&amp;VBID=2C0BXZYIF567G&amp;SMLS=1&amp;RW=1898&amp;RH=898#/SearchResult&amp;VBID=2C0BXZYIF567G&amp;SMLS=1&amp;RW=1898&amp;RH=898&amp;PN=1&amp;POPUPPN=38&amp;POPUPIID=2C0408FHXJDT">Reuters / Kimberly White</a></span></p></img></div><p></p></div>The Supreme Court <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-gay-marriage-ruling-2015-6">delighted gay-rights advocates on Friday</a> when it legalized same-sex marriage throughout the US.</span></p><p>The court's decision comes at a time when support for gay marriage is at an <a href="http://www.gallup.com/poll/117328/marriage.aspx">all-time high</a>, and it follows a dramatic shift in public opinion on the emotionally charged issue in a relatively short period of time. </p><p>As a 35-year-old lesbian, I've seen gay rights advance <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">in ways I never would have envisioned when I was in my early 20s.</span></p><p>Back in 2004, my gay friends and I in Brooklyn, New York, used to have debates about whether it was the "right" time to fight for same-sex marriage.</p><p>Massachusetts had become the first state to <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/11/18/gay.marriage.reut/index.html">legalize gay marriage in 2004.</a> That year, then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome became something of a gay hero when he ordered the city clerk to <a href="http://articles.cnn.com/2004-02-22/justice/same.sex_1_marriage-licenses-couples-political-career?_s=PM:LAW">issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples</a>.</p><p>A few days after Newsome's bold move, Jason West, then mayor of the small town of New Paltz, New York, got cheers from gay New Yorkers when he <a href="http://articles.cnn.com/2004-02-27/us/ny.samesex.marriage_1_mayor-jason-west-gay-couples-issue-marriage-licenses?_s=PM:US">started performing same-sex marriages</a> in the Village Hall.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/558d9dccecad040a3ddaa49b-1200-924/brides-gay-marriage-lesbians-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Brides gay marriage lesbians"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Stephen Lam</span></p><p class="caption">Same-sex couple Cynthia Wides (L) and Elizabeth Carey embrace each other as they turn in their marriage license at City Hall in San Francisco, June 29, 2013. </p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Those events spurred intense discussion about gay marriage among my friends. </p><p>I remember one lesbian friend pointing out that she obviously couldn't be "against" gay marriage. But she wondered why activists weren't focusing on what she believed were more attainable goals - like making sure gay teens didn't get beaten up in school. </p><p>Others worried about a backlash, and their fears weren't unfounded. A huge backlash did come in 2004, when 13 states amended their state Constitutions to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ohio-gay-marriage-poll-supreme-court-doma-prop-8-2013-3">officially ban same-sex marriage</a>. That year, just 31% of Americans were in favor of gay marriage, <a href="http://www.people-press.org/2012/04/25/more-support-for-gun-rights-gay-marriage-than-in-2008-or-2004/">according to the Pew Research Center for People and the Press</a>.</p><p>The US has changed dramatically since 2004. Now, just more than a decade later, 60% of Americans favor same-sex marriage, <a href="http://www.gallup.com/poll/117328/marriage.aspx">according to Gallup</a>.<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /></span></p><p><span class="float_right"></span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/51cb264deab8ea8f2e00000d-800-600/happy-edith-windsor-1.jpg" border="0" alt="happy edith windsor"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Joshua Roberts</span></p><p class="caption">Edith Windsor, the plaintiff in the DOMA case, outside the Supreme Court after her victory</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>President Barack Obama eventually came out as a supporter of gay marriage in 2012, and even prominent Republicans <a href="http://www.gallup.com/poll/117328/marriage.aspx">have officially voiced their support for same-sex marriage</a>. </p><p>It was just 1986 - in my lifetime - that the Supreme Court upheld a <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> in my home state of Georgia <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowers_v._Hardwick">that criminalized consensual gay sex.</a></p><p>So, what's changed? For one thing, it seems like more and more people feel comfortable coming out of the closet these days (including likeable celebrities like Ellen Page and Neil Patrick Harris, as well as powerful Apple CEO Tim Cook).</p><p>The other thing that's changed is the push for gay marriage itself. In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act, a law that stated the federal government didn't recognize gay marriage.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/558d9e0a6bb3f72247daa49b-1066-800/stonewall-watermarked-13-1.jpg" border="0" alt="stonewall watermarked 13"><p class="source"><span>Hunter Walker/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Two men celebrate at the historic Stonewall Inn after the Supreme Court's Friday decision.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>The logic behind that decision led many federal courts to overturn gay marriage bans. As USA Today noted, the number of states <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/06/26/supreme-court-gay-lesbian-marriage/28649319/">that allowed gay marriage grew from 17 to 37</a> in just the past year. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Though the Supreme Court could have let states continue legalizing gay marriage one by one, that inaction would have rendered same-sex couples in many states second-class citizens. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As Justice Anthony Kennedy noted in his majority opinion, same-sex marriage is about broader equality for gay people. </span></p><p>"As the State itself makes marriage all the more precious by the significance it attaches to it, exclusion from that status has the effect of teaching that gays and lesbians are unequal in important respects," Kennedy <a href="http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/14pdf/14-556_3204.pdf">wrote in his majority opinion</a>.</p><p>He added, "It demeans gays and lesbians for the State to lock them out of a central institution of the nation's society."</p><p>Back in 2004, gay marriage seemed like an unrealistic and distant reality. The Supreme Court's huge gay marriage ruling came at just the right time

<p>Except for a minor cameo near the film's end, Anna Paquin's Rogue, who was a focus of the original "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Widescreen-Edition-Patrick-Stewart/dp/B00003CX8J" target="_blank">X-Men</a>" in 2000, was removed in the film's editing process.</p>
<p>Director Bryan Singer previously <a href="http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/12/20/x-men-days-future-past-rogue-anna-paquin/" target="_blank">explained to Entertainment Weekly</a> how <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Paquin's appearance would have involved a big rescue sequence involving </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore).</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Unfortunately, Singer said it ended up being </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><a href="http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/12/20/x-men-days-future-past-rogue-anna-paquin/" target="_blank">extraneous</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">" to the overall film.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">There's been a lot of speculation on what exactly Rogue's cut scene was and how it fit into the overall arc of 'Days of Future Past."</span></p>
<p>Screenwriter Simon Kinberg recently expanded on Rogue's cut sequence in an <a href="http://www.empireonline.com/features/days-of-future-past-secrets-explained/p14" target="_blank">interview with Empire magazine</a>, detailing what went on in an elaborate 10-minute scene t<span>hat would have pushed the film closer to a two-and-a-half hour movie.</span></p>
<h3 class="p1"><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">What Happens In The Deleted Scene</strong></h3>

<p class="p1">In the film, Kitty Pride (Ellen Page) sends Wolverine (Jackman) back to the past to save the X-Men and all of mankind from giant mutant-hunting robots (just go with it).</p>
<p class="p1">During one part late in the film, Pride accidentally gets stabbed by Wolverine while he's being sent back in time leaving her wounded badly. While Wolverine has the power to self heal, there's one X-Men who has the ability to borrow other mutants' powers for a while.</p>
<p class="p1">Enter Rogue.</p>
<p class="p1">Iceman, Magneto, and Xavier would have went to save the mutant from some "<a href="http://www.empireonline.com/features/days-of-future-past-secrets-explained/p14" target="_blank">dark, scary place</a>" and bring her to where the X-Men were hiding out to save Kitty.</p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If you go back and watch the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/x-men-days-of-future-past-first-trailer-2013-10" target="_blank">first official trailer for the movie</a>, you can actually catch glimpses of the cut scenes with Paquin.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>For fans watching the movie knowing Rogue was cut, it's pretty evident this is where she most likely would have made her entrance. In this case, it would have made perfect sense for her character to borrow Wolverine's healing power to aid Pride.</span></span></p>
<h3>Why It Was Cut</h3>
<p class="p1">Kinberg went into depth with Empire magazine on why the scene didn't make it into the film.</p>
<p class="p1"><a href="http://www.empireonline.com/features/days-of-future-past-secrets-explained/p14" target="_blank">Via Empire</a>: </p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;">"The Rogue subplot was originally there because I wanted a mission for the older Charles and Eric to do, something like Unforgiven - two last gunslingers, Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman - that kind of a mission for them. I just loved the idea of that. Nothing in the story necessitated that, but just for a lark, I thought it would be a cool thing to see, because we may never see it again.</p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;">"But it does not service the main story. I thought it would increase the urgency and the stakes of the plot in the future, but it actually does the opposite, because it makes you feel like there is an answer out there. You think once Rogue gets here, we'll have an unlimited amount of time. The ticking clock that we'd established with Kitty getting wounded and losing her powers… well, Rogue would show up and press stop on the clock. So for all of those narrative reasons, there was this ten-minute subplot that had to go."</p>
<p class="p1">As Kinberg and Singer have said, the big rescue scene doesn't sound necessary (though cool nonetheless). </p>
<p class="p1">However, i<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">f they really wanted to keep Paquin in the film, it would have made sense if Rogue was just with the group of X-Men from the movie's start so she could have helped revive her fellow X-Man later on. No need for the huge rescue scene.</span></p>
<p>If you're bummed about the scene being cut, both Singer and Kinberg have said it will most likely appear as an extra once the film's released. </p>

Here's What Each State Googled More Than Any Other State This Year

<p>In Marvel Comics, which is owned by Disney, the Avengers defeated the X-Men in a recent crossover known simply as "Avengers vs X-Men." <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In the box-office battle between Disney's recently dominant Avengers franchise and <span>20th Century</span> Fox's X-Men, however, the mutants might be making a comeback.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"X-Men: Days Of Future Past," which opened on Friday, </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">is on track to earn the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend gross at </span><a href="http://variety.com/2014/film/news/box-office-x-men-days-of-future-past-dominates-with-36-million-friday-blended-flops-1201191209/">$110 million</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> in the U.S</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">. Although those numbers aren't mind-blowing, as noted by </span><a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2014/05/24/box-office-x-men-days-of-future-past-earns-36m-on-friday/">Forbes's Scott Mendelson</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, it's a solid start, and </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/x-men-days-of-future-past-reviews-2014-5">excellent reviews</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">should help generate a long run. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Its timing seems good, too, stealing the spotlight from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and not facing another comic book movie until August ("Guardians of the Galaxy"). And it's got star power, with Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence, plus Michael Fassbender, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing and more.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Most importantly, the new X-Men movie appears to be an effective step in launching a new and marketable superhero universe. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That is, after all, what every studio has been trying to do since Marvel Studios, which was bought by Mouse House in 2009, launched its popular and prolific Avengers franchise - including </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk, and their super team -</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> which has</span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Marvel_Cinematic_Universe_films"> grossed over $6.3 billion since 2008</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> and is expanding rapidly in spinoffs and sequels. "Marvel's The Avengers" (2012) alone is the third-highest grossing movie ever at $1.5 billion.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Catching Disney has seemed nearly impossible in recent years.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Sony, which licensed Spider-Man from Marvel in the '90s, has released a string of hit movies but gotten mixed critical reception and struggled to launch an expanded universe. "Spider-Man 3" (2007) was widely panned; "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) was better; "The Amazing-Spider-Man 2" (2014) was also panned, with critics assailing its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazing-spider-man-2-reviews-2014-5">lame attempts to set up spinoffs that no one cares about like "The Sinister Six" and "Venom"</a> as part of <a href="http://moviepilot.com/stories/2014/02/26/there-will-be-spider-man-movies-every-single-year-marc-webb-confirmed-for-asm3-1255336?lt_source=external,manual#!QcO1J">a plan to release Spider-Man-related movies every year</a>.</span></p>
<p>Warner Bros., which owns DC Comics characters like Batman, Superman, plus various less popular superheroes, has a lot to prove as it relaunches or introduces for the first time all characters but Superman in a sequel to the mediocre "Man of Steel" (2013) called "Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice" (2016).</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Fox, which licensed X-Men and Fantastic Four characters from Marvel in the '90s, lost momentum in its X-Men franchise after the high selling but poorly reviewed sequel "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) and spinoff "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009). But it quietly started a comeback with retro relaunch "X-Men: First Class" (2011) and an improved sequel for Jackman in "The Wolverine," which were well reviewed and successful at $350 million and $415 million gross but still small by Avengers standards.</span></p>
<p>Enter "X-Men: Days Of Future Past." Possibly Fox's most expensive movie ever at an estimated <span>$250 million, the movie is an ambitious attempt to</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> take the X-Men back to the big leagues in not just this movie but the spinoffs and sequels the studio is already planning or hoping for.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"It really needs to be one of the top five films of the summer, in terms of grosses. And that's just the bottom line," <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/101693077">Jeff Bock, senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations Co., told CNBC.</a> "It has to succeed on a major level."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Will it succeed? It's got a long way to go on ticket sales, but again, good word of mouth should help.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Directed by Bryan Singer in his first X-Men movie since the popular "X2," "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" has</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><a href="http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/05/23/x-men-ending-future-past/">an engaging plot that is surprisingly comprehensible for a time travel story</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, complex and believable characters, smart dialogue and acting, sharp direction, well-crafted settings from the desolate future to the fantastic 1970s, and great action including the jaw-dropping Quicksilver sequence everyone's talking about. <span>It really is better than Disney's latest offering, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/captain-america-the-winter-soldier-is-a-disappointingly-dumb-movie-2014-4">the disappointingly dumb though popular "Captain America: The Winter Soldier</a><span>," in every nearly every facet.</span></span></p>
<p><span>What's more, Singer and writer-producer Simon Kinberg adeptly bring together stars from the old and new X-Men franchises, making Jackman's Wolverine part of the new franchise; close off the old franchise in </span><a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/jacelacob/x-men-days-of-future-past-questions-simon-kinberg-answers">a satisfying loop that reverses some of the problems of "X-Men: The Last Stand"</a><span>; and clear the way for the new franchise to advance into exciting and uncharted territory.</span></p>
<p><span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Now Singer has urged restraint with Avengers comparisons, </span><a href="http://www.scifinow.co.uk/news/x-mens-bryan-singer-versus-avengers-and-iron-man/">telling SciFiNow</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">:  "[Disney's Marvel movies] are huge, colossal franchises that are peppered with all these other characters that are, again, extremely famous and so yes, Fox will at some point synergise [the X-Men] characters and that process is slowly beginning, but it's very different than taking movies that gross close to a billion dollars and then pushing them together into these giant broad movies."</span></p>
<p>But the comparison may not be too far-fetched. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Fox, </span><a href="http://screenrant.com/x-men-fantastic-four-universe-simon-kinberg/">under Kinberg's lead</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, plans to follow this movie with a relaunched "Fantastic Four" in 2015, "X-Men: Apocalypse" in 2016, with talk of a Wolverine sequel, an X-Force spinoff, Deadpool and Gambit movies, a crossover between Fantastic Four and X-Men, and more. <span>Notably, Jackman, after previously saying the next Wolverine movie would be his last, now says he will reconsider since</span><span> "</span><span></span><a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/17/hugh-jackman-wants-to-do-another-x-men-movie">the whole thing feels fresher to me than ever</a>.<span>"</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Speaking as one of the all-important 18-35 male demographic, I will say that I am at least as excited for the next X-Men movies as for any superhero franchise.</span></span></p>

X-MEN VS AVENGERS: Fox's Mutants May Be Starting A Comeback Against Disney

Hollywood Is Shocked Over Tragic Death Of 'Glee' Actor Cory Monteith
