<ul class="summary-list"><li>Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson said she was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago.</li><li>Doctors said news reports that she beat cancer using alternative treatments are misleading.</li></ul><p>Australian supermodel <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elle-macpherson-says-an-alkaline-diet-has-kept-her-looking-young-heres-why-thats-not-the-case-2016-5">Elle Macpherson</a> revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. Doctors said subsequent news reports that she was in remission because of alternative therapies were potentially misleading and dangerous.</p><p>Macpherson, 60, who is also the founder of wellness company WelleCo, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.womensweekly.com.au/news/elle-macpherson-now/">The Australian Women's Weekly magazine</a> in an interview published on Monday that she is in remission from breast cancer despite refusing the conventional treatments of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-preventative-chemotherapy-how-it-works-2024-3">chemotherapy</a>, mastectomy, radiation, and hormonal therapy her doctor suggested.</p><p>She instead opted for what she described as "an intuitive, heart-led, holistic approach."</p><p>Macpherson said: "In traditional terms, they'd say I'm in clinical remission, but I would say I'm in utter wellness."</p><p>News outlets around the world reported that Macpherson overcame cancer with alternative therapies.</p><p>However, Macpherson told the outlet that she had a lumpectomy, a conventional treatment that removes <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/breast-cancer-risk-screening-age-2023-1">breast cancer </a>along with a small amount of the healthy tissue surrounding it. This led to her 2017 diagnosis of a type of breast cancer known as HER2-positive estrogen-receptive intraductal carcinoma.</p><h2 id="3cf33fad-0891-45c4-96b5-dd9ce951ecbd">Macpherson's lumpectomy might have treated her breast cancer</h2><p id="3cf33fad-0891-45c4-96b5-dd9ce951ecbd">A lumpectomy in itself can be an appropriate standard medical treatment for the condition, professor Chris Pyke, a cancer surgeon, breast cancer risk quantification expert, and the director of medical services at the Mater private hospitals in Brisbane, Australia, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/sep/04/elle-macpherson-breast-cancer-treatment-australian-womens-weekly-misinformation-risk">told</a> The Guardian.</p><p>Pyke added that Macpherson's form of cancer, in many cases, could more accurately be described as a type of non-invasive precancer that, if left untreated, has the potential to turn into invasive cancer, although the chances are low.</p><p>"It's quite possible that just removing that lump all by itself could have been sufficient treatment," Pyke said.</p><p>Macpherson also said she had a previous cancer scare in 2014 when a lump she found in her breast turned out to be a benign cyst. It prompted her to seek out a naturopath, a type of alternative-medicine practitioner, and to found her wellness brand.</p><p>Dr. Liz O'Riordan, a breast cancer surgeon and advocate for breast cancer awareness, wrote on X in response to the interview: "The potential dangers of choosing alternative treatment for breast cancer can increase your risk of dying by six times. There is no evidence to prove that any of it works."</p><p>O'Riordan didn't provide a source for the statistic, but a 2017 study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that patients with breast or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colorectal-cancer-high-mortality-young-people-signs-symptoms-disease-2024-1">colorectal cancer</a> who had alternative therapies as their initial treatment were five times more likely to die after five years than those who chose conventional medicine.</p><p>"I'd urge women not to assume that because it's worked for her so far, it will work for you," O'Riordan wrote in another post on X.</p><p>There's also some confusion over the exact meaning of "intraductal," O'Riordan noted <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/Liz_ORiordan/status/1831268410858123419">on X</a>, as it could refer to "ductal carcinoma in situ," a precancerous form of breast cancer that can't spread and therefore wouldn't warrant chemotherapy. Or "invasive ductal cancer," an invasive form, which is often treated with chemotherapy to prevent recurrence.</p><p>"Without Elle making a comment or her surgeon commenting to explain exactly what type of cancer she has, we don't really know," O'Riordan said.</p><p>Ceinwen Giles, the CEO of Shine Cancer Support, a charity that supports people who receive a cancer diagnosis in their 20s, 30s, and 40s and who is also in remission, told Business Insider news reports not emphasizing that Macpherson had surgery could be harmful to vulnerable people.</p><p>"There is a lot of stuff out there, particularly on the internet, that I think preys on vulnerable people, and I've been there myself, where you're desperately looking for something that will make you better," she said.</p><p>"I worry with that kind of thing is that people will see it and think, 'oh, well, I'm not going to have any traditional treatments. I'm just going to go down a holistic route because it worked for her,'" Giles said.</p><div type="image" title="Elle Macpherson" height="2081" width="2775" msid="113069112" hostid="261" sizebytes="303684"></div><h2 id="caa7e7aa-ef87-43cf-8f29-2965f7dc3732">Alternative treatments are not backed by science</h2><p>Macpherson's holistic treatment involved renting a home in Arizona for eight months, where she was under the care of her primary doctor, who specializes in integrative medicine, an approach that uses both conventional and alternative therapies, as well as naturopath, holistic dentist, osteopath, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/are-chiropractors-doctors">chiropractor</a>, and two therapists.</p><p>She told The Weekly that she devoted "every single minute to healing myself."</p><p>Complementary therapies, such as yoga, therapy, and herbal medicine, are used by some people with cancer alongside medical treatment as they can help them cope with their symptoms better, the charity <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/treatment/complementary-alternative-therapies/about/difference-between-therapies">Cancer Research UK</a> says on its website.</p><p>There are many reasons someone might want to try alternative therapies, the charity said, but there is no scientific or medical evidence to show that they can cure cancer. In fact, they might cause harmful side effects or interfere with medical treatment, it said.</p><p>Patients are also not informed about the possible risks, survival rates, and side effects as they would be with conventional treatment. "That's my worry with alternative medicine. People are being told that this will save their life, without being told about any of the side effects," O'Riordan told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness/conditions/cancer/breast-cancer-chemo-risks/">The Telegraph</a>.</p><p>The modeling agency that represents Macpherson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.</p>

I did," Macpherson told <a href="http://www.thenewpotato.com/2016/04/25/elle-macpherson-interview-2016/">The New Potato</a>.</span></p><p><span>Alkaline diets are focused on reducing acidity in a person's body, </span><span>according to Canadian scientist Timothy Caulfield, the author of <em><a href="http://penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/417402/gwyneth-paltrow-wrong-about-everything#9780143189039">Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything? When Celebrity Culture And Science Clash</a></em>. </span></p><p><span>The diet proposes that consuming less acidic foods and beverages makes a person more healthy, prevents aging and helps with weight loss.</span></p><p>"There really is no evidence that supports the idea that eating in this way has any healthy benefits," Caulfield told INSIDER. "To make your diet more complicated based on something that doesn't have <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> to support it isn't a great idea."</p><p>An alkaline diet entails cutting out meat, wheat dairy, refined sugars and other foods deemed high in acid, according to Caulfield.</p><p>Alkaline diet followers often test the acidity in their urine, believing it to be an indicator of their body's pH balance. In fact, MacPherson recently told the <a href="http://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/elle-macpherson-i-think-boris-johnson-is-doing-a-pretty-good-job-it-would-be-hard-to-better-him-10191560.html">London Evening Standard </a>that she carries a pH balance tester urine kit in her purse at all times to check that she's in an alkaline state.</p><p>But, the pH levels in a person's urine are entirely different from the pH levels in the rest of their body, according to Caulfield. Furthermore, what a person eats has the potential to affect the acidity of their urine - but not their body.</p><p>"There's really no evidence that how you eat is going to have a profound impact on the acidity of your actual body. Some of these theories often talk about the acidity of your urine as a marker, but that's not the acidity of your body; that's the acidity of your urine. These foods can impact the pH levels of your urine, and not your blood," Caulfield said.</p><p>The scientist says there's also no proof that the diet actually helps people lose weight. Instead, he suggests that what the diet does is force people to actually think about what they're eating, which can inspire them to make healthier dietary decisions.</p><p>"This is a really common phenomenon, whether you're talking about gluten-free, Paleo, name the diet," he said. "What it is, is people pay attention to what they're eating over a period of time, and it makes them lose weight. Studies show over the long term there's no special diet that's better than any other."</p><p>And so, Caulfield urges people to exercise caution when deciding if they should follow the same diet as their favorite celebrity. Oftentimes, whether you'll end up looking like a supermodel is completely out of your hands.</p><p>"The thing that's really important to do if you want to age gracefully is to pick your parents and have good genetics. <p>It's for that reason, private Swiss bank accounts are popularly seen as belonging to only tax dodgers and, well, Swiss nationals.</p>
<p>Indeed, when <a href="http://www.icij.org/project/swiss-leaks/banking-giant-hsbc-sheltered-murky-cash-linked-dictators-and-arms-dealers#_ga=1.52487584.902867380.1423441000">newly leaked HSBC documents named musicians David Bowie, Phil Collins and Tina Turner</a> as being tied to Swiss bank accounts, it wasn't a big deal because all three are actually legal residents of Switzerland or living in Switzerland.</p>
<p>But the story's a tiny bit less clear for actor John Malkovich, fashion designer Diane Von Fürstenberg, and soccer star Diego Forlán.</p>
<p>On Sunday, the Washington-based <a href="http://www.icij.org/project/swiss-leaks">International Consortium of Investigative Journalists</a> along with news outlets the Guardian, the French daily Le Monde, BBC Panorama, and CBS's 60 Minutes published what they found in HSBC's Swiss private bank documents <a href="http://www.icij.org/project/swiss-leaks/whistleblower-thief-hero-introducing-source-data-shook-hsbc#_ga=1.87008528.902867380.1423441000">stolen and leaked by whistleblower Hervé Falciani</a>. The journalists conclude that among other things, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hsbcs-shady-swiss-banking-arm-2015-2">HSBC's Swiss private banking arm helped clients evade taxes</a>. The leaked files date 2005-2007.</p>
<p>Without establishing any clear connection to illegal activity, the journalists went ahead and revealed the names of a bunch of celebrities whose names appeared.</p>
<p>Here's a summary of names and what the journalists found:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>John Malcovich (actor)</strong>: "Hollywood actor John Malkovich, for instance, said through a representative that he knows nothing about an account listing his name and conjectured that it might have to do with Bernard Madoff, the former stockbroker convicted of fraud who handled some of his finances."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Joan Collins (actress)</strong>: "A representative for the British actress Joan Collins told ICIJ: 'In 1993 my client deposited funds into a bank account in London and subsequently discovered that, without her instructions, the money had been transferred to the Swiss account referred to in your letter.' The representative added that no tax was avoided."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Christian Slater (actor)</strong>: "Christian Michael Slater was linked to an HSBC client account named "Captain Kirk," after the Star Trek character. It was opened in 1996 and closed in 1997. The account listed two postal addresses: one in the United States, associated with ERNST &amp; YOUNG LLP, and one in the United Kingdom. The leaked files do not specify the exact role Slater had in relation to the account."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Diane Von Fürstenberg (fashion designer)</strong>: "Diane Von Fürstenberg's was linked to four HSBC client accounts: two numbered that were opened in 1988 and later closed in 1996 and 2002. There was another account under the name "Thunderbird Investments Ltd," in which she showed up as beneficial owner, opened in 1994 and closed in 2002 and one account for "Licom Ltd," where at one point she was listed as "Attorney B." Two family members were also linked to the client account. Her mother was listed as beneficial owner of the account and then stricken. "Licom Ltd" listed seven bank accounts that together held as much as $6,268,217 in 2006/2007 ... A spokeswoman told ICIJ that von Fürstenberg inherited Thunderbird Investments Ltd. from her parents, who were not American tax residents, and that she never received anything from Licom Ltd. Von Fürstenberg 'made all necessary US tax filings and insisted that the assets be domesticated to the United States more than 10 years ago.'"</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Diego Forlán (soccer player)</strong>: "Diego Forlán became an HSBC client in 2006, while he was playing in Spain for Villarreal. He was connected to two client accounts that together listed four bank accounts. Two of them were associated with the account Rosario Trading Company S.A where he was listed as "Attorney C," and two were associated to numbered account 12661 ZDF. Together the accounts held as much as $1.4 million in 2006/2007. The leaked files do not specify the exact role that Forlán had in relation to the numbered account."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Elle MacPherson (model)</strong>: "Elle MacPherson was connected to seven HSBC client accounts. She was beneficial owner of five of them. The other two, under the names of "Elle MacPherson Capital A/C" and "Elle MacPherson income A/C" do not specify the exact role that she had in relation to the accounts. The four client accounts still operative in 2008 were linked to 25 bank accounts that together held as much as $12.2 million in 2006/2007. Three of the accounts for which she was the beneficial owner were closed in 2000, 2001 and 2004."</p>
<p>It's quite possible that all of these celebrities' accounts were legit and legal.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, their names are appearing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-leaked-bank-files-show-hsbc-helped-clients-dodge-taxes-2015-2">next to alleged blood diamond traffickers and illegal arms dealers</a>.</p>

<p>But this isn't the first time a billionaire has been at the center of a celebrity love triangle or media storm.</p>

<p>Up until now, it was believed that Paltrow didn't want to be painted in the same negative light as recent VF celebrity cover stars, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/brad-pitt-tries-to-fix-world-war-z-2013-5" target="_blank">such as Brad Pitt</a>, so she refused to cooperate on the piece and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gwyneth-paltrow-boycotting-vanity-fair-2013-9" target="_blank">sent her friends an email</a> asking them to do the same.</p>
<p>But now the <a href="http://pagesix.com/2013/10/18/behind-gwyneth-paltrows-feud-with-vanity-fair/" target="_blank">New York Post</a> is reporting a bombshell reason why Paltrow -- who has appeared on the cover of the magazine a whopping five times previously -- is so against the upcoming article.</p>
<p>The article allegedly reports that Paltrow had an affair in 2008 with Miami real estate billionaire, Jeffrey Soffer. Soffer recently wed model Elle Macpherson, while Paltrow has been married to Coldplay frontman Christ Martin since 2003.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>We're told that researchers on the story by top VF writer Vanessa Grigoriadis have been asking Miami society sources questions about Paltrow and Soffer, who is considered Miami royalty, owns the lavish Fontainebleau Hotel and recently married Elle Macpherson... </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>Vanity Fair is asking if Gwyneth had an affair with Jeff back in 2008 when he reopened the Fontainebleau. He flew her in for the party, and she stayed at his house... <span>Soffer reportedly gave Paltrow a private tour of the hotel, whisking her away in his Bentley, and the following day, she joined him on his yacht with Kate Hudson.</span></span></span></p>
<p>The Post explains that Paltrow and Martin were reportedly on the rocks at the time.</p>
<p>Paltrow has <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2022075/Gwyneth-Paltrow-says-marriage-Chris-Martin-hard.html" target="_blank">spoken openly in the past</a> about the ups and downs of her marriage, <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2022075/Gwyneth-Paltrow-says-marriage-Chris-Martin-hard.html" target="_blank">saying</a> "<span>Sometimes it's hard being with someone for a long time.</span>"</p>
<p>Despite any past marital woes, Paltrow is slamming reports of an affair with Soffer.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"Jeff is a long time friend of Gwyneth's and there was absolutely no romantic relationship with him," the actress' <a href="http://www.gossipcop.com/gwyneth-paltrow-jeffrey-soffer-affair-cheating-cheated-vanity-fair/" target="_blank">rep told GossipCop</a>, adding, "He flew several friends down to Miami, not just Gwyneth."</span></p>
<p>Soffer, who heads Turnberry Principal and is <a href="http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-businessmen/ceos/jeffrey-soffer-net-worth/" target="_blank">worth a reported $1 billion</a>, has made no comment.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, The Post speculates a few other reasons Paltrow is so against the VF piece:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"Other juicy VF topics could be Gwyneth's epic falling out with ex-best friend Madonna, her Goop transformation and her casting-couch experiences. She told Elle, "When I was starting out, someone suggested that we finish a meeting in the bedroom. I left. I was pretty shocked."</span></p>
