"What can I say — the voters have spoken," Colbert said. "<keyword id="201761" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mark-Sanford">Mark Sanford</keyword> has beaten my sister, and I believe that means that Mark Sanford is now my sister. And on behalf of my family, I want to say that we're deeply sorry about him."
Colbert said he felt "betrayed" by South Carolina, prompting him to angrily renounce his home state and claim he is from North Carolina. 
"No, I have to," he said. "I'm a Tar Heel now. Whatever the f— that means."
Colbert's sister, <keyword id="1743656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Elizabeth-Colbert-Busch">Elizabeth Colbert Busch</keyword>, lost her race to Sanford in a landslide on Tuesday. She grabbed only 45 percent of the vote to Sanford's 54 percent, completing a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/photo-mark-sanford-maria-belen-chapur-south-carolina-election-2013-4" target="_blank">major political turnaround for the disgraced former governor</a>.

STEPHEN COLBERT: I Was Sure My Sister Was Going To Win When CNN Called The Race For Mark Sanford

Sanford, South Carolina's former Republican governor, is running in the state's 1st District special election <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-elizabeth-colbert-busch-stephen-mark-sanford-south-carolina-1st-district-election-2013-4" target="_blank">against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, Stephen's sister</a>. 
The comedian's faux conservative persona was so turned off by the "Morning Joe" interview of Sanford that he did the unthinkable — he endorsed a Democrat. 
Colbert played clips of Scarborough and "Morning Joe" co-host Mike Barnicle fawning over Sanford, with Barnicle praising Sanford for his "honesty" amid the fallout over a 2009 revelation of an affair with Maria Belen Chapur, who is now Sanford's fiancee. Barnicle asked Sanford if he thought his honesty would "come back to hurt" him during the campaign.
"That is some in-depth reporting," Colbert said. "Woodward and Bernstein may have had 'Deep Throat,' but Mike Barnicle is doing something similar to Mark Sanford."
Then Colbert did something that he said would "shock a lot of people" — he endorsed a Democrat. Of course, that Democrat is also his sister, for whom he is <a href="http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/house-races/291377-stephen-colbert-to-host-additional-fundraisers-for-sisters-house-bid" target="_blank">set to host a pair of high-profile fundraisers in the coming weeks</a>.
"Mark Sanford should thank you, Joe Scarborough," Colbert said. "Because I would not have done that if you had not inspired me."

For now, Colbert Busch is best known as the sister of the Comedy Central star, <keyword id="352115" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Stephen-Colbert">Stephen Colbert</keyword>. But she actually has a plausible chance of winning — a <a href="http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2013/03/south-carolina-special-election-looks-like-a-toss-up.html" target="_blank">recent Public Policy Polling survey</a> found that she holds a slim, 47-45 lead over Sanford.
This is Colbert Busch's first attempted foray into political office. Here are a few things you need to know about what has led her up to this point:
1. She <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/18/stephen-colberts-sister_n_2505927.html" target="_blank">pronounces "Colbert" with a hard "T."</a>
Unlike her brother, Stephen, who has built his fame while referring to himself with a soft "T."
2. For the past five years, she has held a high-profile position at Clemson University.
She has been the Director of Business Development at Clemson University’s Restoration Institute. According to her official biography, she has played a "key role in bringing about the world’s largest wind turbine/grid simulator facility."
3. She was an intern for former South Carolina Democratic Sen. Fritz Hollings
One summer in the mid-1970s, Colbert Busch worked as an intern in Fritz's office, said James Smith, her director of communications. Hollings served 38 years as a Senator from South Carolina, making him the eighth-longest serving Senator in U.S. history.
4. Her father and two of her brothers died in a plane crash in 1974. 
Colbert Busch is the eighth of 11 children. On Sept. 11, 1974, her father, James, and two of her brothers were killed in a plane crash in Charlotte, N.C., <a href="http://colbertbuschforcongress.com/meet-elizabeth/" target="_blank">according to her official biography</a>. Afterward, she moved back to Charleston to be with her family.
5. She was in New York City during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks
Smith didn't elaborate, but said Colbert Busch was in New York in the heart of the Financial District (Maiden Lane) during the attacks. 
6. She is the first female chair of the Maritime Association of South Carolina.
The association has been in existence since 1926, promoting the port of Charleston and its business and political interest. Colbert Busch has also been the chairwoman of the South Carolina International Trade Conference and her local chamber of commerce.
7. She was named one of the Journal of Commerce’s Top 20 Women in Transportation.

<a href="http://www.politico.com/story/2013/04/mark-sanford-nrcc-90217.html">Politico scoops today </a>that Republicans were caught off guard by the news, and believe Sanford's chances of winning were unlikely. 
The National Republican Congressional Committee, which provides funding to GOP candidates, is now pulling its funding from his campaign against <keyword id="1743656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Elizabeth-Colbert-Busch">Elizabeth Colbert Busch</keyword>, the Democratic candidate running against Sanford in South Carolina's 1st district special election. 
“Mark Sanford has proven he knows what it takes to win <keyword id="6355644" type="EVENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="elections">elections</keyword>," Andrea Bozek, an NRCC spokeswoman, told Politico. "At this time, the NRCC will not be engaged in this special election."
Sanford, whose political career was first derailed by a 2009 sex scandal during his tenure as governor, was already locked in a close race with Colbert Busch. The loss of party funding will likely be a major setback for his campaign, as it enters the home stretch before the May 7 election.
“This is an unfortunate situation but this is what happens when candidates aren’t honest and withhold information,” one Republican operative told Politico. 
When asked for comment on the impact the incident is having on her ex-husband's campaign, Jenny Sanford <a href="http://www.thestate.com/2013/04/16/2727584/jenny-sanford-on-trespass-complaint.html">told</a> The State, "The race is not a concern. I am focused on raising my children.”

Colbert dismissed some pundits who worried that Elizabeth Colbert-Busch would get free hype from "The <keyword id="1609859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Colbert-Report">Colbert Report</keyword>."
"Wrong! No free airtime," Colbert said, tongue-in-cheek. "As a broadcast journalist, I am obligated to maintain pure objectivity.
"It doesn't matter that my sister is intelligent, hardworking, compassionate, and dedicated to the people of South Carolina. I will not be mentioning any of that on my show."
Plus, Colbert said he can't support her because she is a Democrat. So he gave Republicans some tips on how to beat her. For example, he told them how to win an argument with her — repeat what she says in a stupid voice.
"Like this: 'Ooh, Social Security is a public trust to those who paid into it for their whole working lives,'" Colbert said. "Trust me — it works."
The election will take place on May 7.

Stephen Colbert Gives Republicans Tips On How To Beat His Sister-Who Is Running For Congress!

Sanford will now face off in a general election contest against Democratic nominee Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of faux-conservative comedian <keyword id="352115" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Stephen-Colbert">Stephen Colbert</keyword>.
Early polls indicate that the race will be close. Although South Carolina's 1st district is very conservative, Colbert Busch appears to have a real chance of pulling off an upset, due, in part, to her national name recognition.
“I look forward to a vigorous campaign that focuses on creating jobs, balancing our country’s budget and choosing an independent-minded leader who shares the values of the great people of South Carolina,” Colbert Busch said in a statement shortly after Sanford's win.
Democrats are also likely to benefit from Sanford's unsavory past — namely, the highly-publicized 2009 revelation of an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina, which came to light when he disappeared from the governor's office for several days. Aides told the press Sanford had gone for a solitary hike on the Appalachian Trail, when in reality, he was visiting his mistress. Sanford, now divorced, is engaged to his former mistress.

Mark Sanford Just Won The GOP Runoff In South Carolina, And Now Has To Face Off Against Stephen Colbert's Sister

Former South Carolina Governor <keyword id="201761" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mark-Sanford">Mark Sanford</keyword> has won the special election for South Carolina's First District Congressional seat, defeating Democratic candidate Elizabeth Colbert Busch by a landslide, according to the AP. 
The victory completes a major comeback for Sanford, whose political career was considered over after he was caught lying about an extramarital affair in 2009 and made the phrase "hiking the Appalachian Trail" a new euphemism for philandering. 
Given Sanford's past, Democrats had high hopes of winning the deep-red South Carolina district. Sanford suffered several setbacks, including losing funding from the Republican National Congressional Committee after his ex-wife announced she was suing him for trespassing. 
But recent polls showed Sanford gaining momentum, and finally passing Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert. 
In the end, the race wasn't even close. With 71 percent of precincts reporting, Sanford led Colbert Busch 54 percent to 45 percent.

Mark Sanford Wins South Carolina Special Election, Pulling Off Huge Political Comeback 

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford publicly appeared for the first time Tuesday night with his fiancee, Maria Belen Chapur, nearly four years after their extramarital affair originally tore down his rising political career.
After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-sanford-stephen-colbert-sister-elizabeth-south-carolina-election-2013-4#ixzz2PPBcVDS2" target="_blank">winning the </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-sanford-stephen-colbert-sister-elizabeth-south-carolina-election-2013-4#ixzz2PPBcVDS2" target="_blank">Republican nomination in the race for the state's 1st Congressional District</a> in a runoff on Tuesday, Sanford thanked Chapur for struggling through the campaign with him. Chapur did not address the crowd or reporters.
Sanford is now set to square off against Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, in the general election for the seat.
