<p>PhD candidate <a href="http://ethnographymatters.net/2013/04/02/an-uplifting-experience-adopting-ethnography-to-study-elevator-user-experience/">Rebekah Rousi</a> discovered some interesting patterns when she spent several days riding up and down elevators in two of the tallest buildings in Adelaide, Australia. In her <a href="http://ethnographymatters.net/2013/04/02/an-uplifting-experience-adopting-ethnography-to-study-elevator-user-experience/">report</a>, she says that:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"As a result of 30 elevator journeys (15 in each building) <strong>a clear social order could be seen regarding where people positioned themselves </strong>inside the elevators and how they interacted with the design features, such as mirrors and monitors.<strong> More senior men in particular seemed to direct themselves towards the back of the elevator cabins. In front of them were younger men, and in front of them were women of all ages</strong>. Men watched the monitors, looked in the side mirrors (in one building) to see themselves, and in the door mirrors (of the other building) to also watch others. Women would watch the monitors and avoid eye contact with other users (unless in conversation) and the mirrors. It was only when the women traveled with other women, and just a few at that, that women elevator users would utilize the mirrors. One interviewee even mentioned that she only looked in the mirrors when there was no one else in the elevator."</p>

This never-ending elevator requires quick reflexes

Even though she didn't interact with anyone face-to-face, her downstairs neighbor was infected.</li><li>According to a new study, transmission likely occurred <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-lower-coronavirus-risk-riding-elevator-office-2020-6">in the elevator</a>, when the neighbor touched the same buttons that the quarantined traveler had.</li><li>The neighbor was later linked to 70 other coronavirus infections in the local community.</li><li>Coronavirus particles can live <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-can-coronavirus-live-on-surfaces-how-to-disinfect-2020-3">on surfaces like plastic and stainless steel</a>, which are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-risk-higher-tight-indoor-spaces-with-little-air-flow-2020-5">common in elevators</a>, for up to seven days.</li></ul>New research reveals that an elevator can be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-lower-coronavirus-risk-riding-elevator-office-2020-6">a coronavirus transmission hotspot</a>, even if an infected person doesn't have symptoms and doesn't ride with anyone else.<br /><br />A woman traveled from the US back to her home in China's Heilongjiang province on March 19. Although she did not have any symptoms, she quarantined in her apartment following her arrival, avoiding any close contact with other apartment-building residents. An antibody test would later reveal she was an asymptomatic coronavirus carrier.<br /><br />Three weeks later, her downstairs neighbor (and four of the neighbor's close contacts) tested positive.<br /><br />The two apartment-building neighbors had not crossed paths. But they had used the same elevator at different times.<br /><br />According to <a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/9/20-1798_article?deliveryName=USCDC_333-DM32083#tnF1">a new CDC study</a>, the downstairs neighbor "likely became infected by using the elevator in the building" after the asymptomatic carrier had ridden it, <a href="https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/9/20-1798-f1">the study authors wrote</a>. They think transmission likely occurred when the neighbor touched surfaces and buttons in the elevator. <br /><br />No other residents in the building tested positive, but contact tracing later revealed the neighbor was patient zero of a 71-person cluster in the local community.<br /><br /><h2><keyword id="6658706" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ELEVATORS">Elevators</keyword> could be coronavirus-transmission hotspots</h2>  <div type="image" title="Elevator Buttons" height="2535" width="3379" msid="76800624" hostid="261"></div><br /><br />The primary concern when it comes to coronavirus and elevators is that nearly all lifts are small, enclosed indoor spaces. Those are the ideal conditions for the coronavirus' spread, since it's expelled in droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.<br /><br />Elevators also tend to lack strong airflow, which mean people who have <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> (no matter whether they're presymptomatic, asymptomatic, or feeling ill) could leave some virus behind.<br /><br />Although it's not common, a person can get the coronavirus if they touch a surface or object that has viral particles on it and then touch their mouth, nose, or eyes. <br /><br />The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-can-coronavirus-live-on-surfaces-how-to-disinfect-2020-3">virus' lifespan</a> on different surfaces depends on the surrounding temperature, humidity, type of surface, and other factors. But two studies found that it lasts longest — <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanmic/article/PIIS2666-5247(20)30003-3/fulltext">up to seven days</a> — on stainless steel and plastic, which are commonly found in elevators.  That means elevator buttons and doors could harbor viral particles for days.<br /><br />Indeed, a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7214329/">May study</a> found the coronavirus' genetic material on elevator buttons in a hospital in Wuhan, China.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="coronavirus elevator" height="3097" width="4383" msid="76800628" hostid="261"></div><br /><br /><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/office-buildings.html">CDC guidelines</a> stipulate that commonly touched surfaces, including those in public elevators, should be frequently cleaned and disinfected.<br /><br />Even so, it's important to "punch the buttons with something other than your fingers," Linsey Marr, an aerosol scientist at Virginia Tech, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elevators-could-be-coronavirus-hotspots-return-to-offices-2020-5">previously told Business Insider</a>.  <br /><br /><h2>A 71-person cluster</h2>The downstairs neighbor's infection jump-started a chain reaction in the local community. <br /><br />A week after the asymptomatic traveler returned home, the neighbor hosted her mother and her mother's boyfriend for an overnight stay. Three days later (on March 29), the mother and boyfriend attended a party, interacting with another gentleman. By April 10, all six people had tested positive.<br /><br />The man from the party had a stroke before testing positive for COVID-19. He went to the hospital on April 2, where his sons cared for him. The sons later tested positive, too. The three of them interacted with hospital staff and other patients, unknowingly passing the virus on to them as well: A total of 28 people were infected. Then the man moved to a second hospital, catalyzing another series of infections. <br /><br />By mid-April, 70 people were infected who could be traced back to the neighbor's case.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="coronavirus hospital" height="683" width="1024" msid="76800636" hostid="261"></div><br /><br />Scientists from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention sequenced the genome of virus samples from across the 71-person cluster. They determined that the samples were nearly identical, and that the virus genome differed from any other samples previously found circulating in China. That indicated the virus originated abroad.<br /><br />That's how they figured out that the asymptomatic traveler was likely "the origin of infection for this cluster."<br /><br />"Our results illustrate how a single asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection could result in widespread community transmission," the study authors concluded.<br /><br />

Elevators check all those boxes. </p><p>Linsey Marr, an aerosol scientist at Virginia Tech, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elevators-could-be-coronavirus-hotspots-return-to-offices-2020-5">previously told Business Insider</a> that may be especially true in high-rise office buildings, where elevators "are crowded and people ride in them for a long time, like a minute or more several times a day." </p><p>Here's how to lower coronavirus transmission risk when riding an elevator, according to experts. </p><h2>Limit how much you talk</h2><p><div type="image" title="elevator" height="2000" width="3000" msid="76540417" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The coronavirus primarily spreads via droplets — particles larger than 5 micrometers — when an infected person coughs, speaks, sings, or sneezes. A study published last month found that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loud-speech-coronavirus-droplets-study-2020-5">talking loudly</a> produces enough droplets to transmit the coronavirus to others, and that those droplets can linger in the air for at least eight minutes. </p><p>"There is a substantial probability that normal speaking causes airborne virus transmission in confined environments," the researchers wrote. </p><p>So limiting how much you talk when riding an elevator and encouraging others to do the same could help reduce risk.</p><p>Experts still aren't sure whether clouds of even tinier viral particles, known as aerosols, can linger in the air after an infected person has ridden an elevator. The highest concentrations were observed in confined areas with little air flow.</p><p>"Many elevators do not seem to have mechanical ventilation, like a fan, beyond the natural ventilation that occurs when the doors open and close," Marr <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/04/17/836830157/coronavirus-faqs-can-sunlight-kill-the-virus-how-risky-is-an-elevator-ride">told NPR in April</a>.</p><h2>Wearing masks is crucial</h2><p>Given the close confines and limited ventilation in some elevators, it's critical to wear a mask when riding, experts say.</p><p>New York City's reopening guidelines require employers to "advise workers and visitors to wear face coverings in common areas including elevators." </p><p>William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University, put it more simply: "When in doubt wear a mask," he told Business Insider.</p><p>"Those masks make sure that if you happen to be unknowingly infected you won't give it to somebody else. And the reason other people wear it is so they don't unwittingly give it to you," Schaffner added.</p><p><div type="image" title="elevator" height="956" width="1280" msid="76540419" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Shortening your ride time, and consequently the duration of contact between you and other people, decreases transmission risk too, he said.</p><h2>Social distance as much as possible</h2><p>The number of people in a given space and how close they get to each other matter most when it comes to coronavirus risk, according to Schaffner. That's why <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/office-buildings.html">the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends</a> that offices limit use and occupancy of elevators so that those inside can stay at least 6 feet apart.</p><p>While that may not be possible in smaller elevators, New York state has mandated that office elevators operate below half of their normal capacity.</p><p>If you come across a crowded elevator, don't get in. The amount of virus in the air in ventilated wards, however, was very low.</p><p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, furthermore, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/infection-control/control-recommendations.html">says</a> certain hospital procedures, like intubating a patient, "could generate infectious aerosols." A person can get the coronavirus if they touch a surface or object that has viral particles on it and then touch their mouth, nose, or eyes. </p><p>Although the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-can-coronavirus-live-on-surfaces-how-to-disinfect-2020-3">coronavirus's lifespan</a> on different surfaces depends on the surrounding temperature, humidity, type of surface, and other factors, two studies found that it lasts longest on stainless steel and plastic. <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanmic/article/PIIS2666-5247(20)30003-3/fulltext">One study</a> found that the coronavirus lasted up to seven days on those surfaces, which are common in elevators. It climbed at a then-staggering rate of <a href="http://www.americaslibrary.gov/jb/reform/jb_reform_otis_2.html" target="_blank">40 feet per minute</a>.</p>
<p>Today, an Otis elevator in the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai soars up at a speed of 22 mph. And it didn't even top a new <keyword id="41681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ranking">ranking</keyword> of the fastest elevators in the world from <a href="http://www.emporis.com/">Emporis</a>, a database of construction projects.</p>
<p>The list is dominated by elevators located in Asia, including <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, Taiwan, and Japan.</p>

In his new book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/To-Sell-Is-Human-Surprising/dp/1594487154">"To Sell Is Human</a>," bestselling author Daniel Pink argues that there are two major reasons its time has passed.</p>
<p>First, organizations are more democratic. It used to be the only time a lowly worker would ever encounter the CEO was in the elevator. Now, open plans, all-hands meetings, and email means that's not the case.</p>
<p>Second, everyone — CEOs especially — faces a massive torrent of information. That means we need new and better strategies to stand out. </p>
<p>Pink <a href="http://www.amazon.com/To-Sell-Is-Human-Surprising/dp/1594487154">offers six suggestions</a> to replace the <keyword id="157581" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Elevator-pitch">elevator pitch</keyword>. </p>
<p><strong>1. The one-word pitch</strong></p>
<p>Attention spans are so short these days, especially for people who can't imagine a world without the internet, that only "brutally simple" ideas get through. For example, when you think of "search" you think Google. When you hear "priceless" you think of MasterCard. That took a lot of effort. </p>
<p>One word, delivered forcefully, can go farther than many. But the idea, and the credibility behind it, have to be so powerful that more words aren't needed.</p>
<p><strong>2. The question pitch</strong></p>
<p>Questions pack a big punch. When you make a statement, people can respond passively. A question requires a response, people have to process and think about the message. </p>
<p>A question prompts people to come up with their own reason for agreeing or disagreeing with you. When someone comes up with their own reasoning, they tend to believe more strongly in an idea and help sell it for you. </p>
<p><strong>3. The rhyming pitch</strong></p>
<p>The most famous example is Johnny Cochran's "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit." There's a reason you remember that. Rhymes increase "processing fluency," the ease with which our brains can take in a phrase or statement and make sense of it.</p>
<p>Rhymes are easy to understand, so we unconsciously see them as more accurate, and they stick in our minds. </p>
<p><strong>4. The subject line pitch</strong></p>
<p>Email is such a fundamental part of our life that it's become routine; we rarely think about how to do it well. One of the most important parts of getting someone to open an email is the subject line, and the best ones use one of three concepts.</p>
<p>Utility <span>—</span>  people are more likely to read emails that directly affect their work; make it clear that yours does.</p>
<p>Curiosity <span>—</span> when something doesn't directly affect their work, a moderate amount of uncertainty drives people to open an email.</p>
<p>Specificity <span>—</span> be as specific about time, place, and content as you possibly can. That doesn't contradict the curiosity principle, Pink <a href="http://www.amazon.com/To-Sell-Is-Human-Surprising/dp/1594487154">gives a great example</a>: "A mushy subject line like i<em>mprove your golf swing</em> achieves less than one offering <em>4 tips to improve your golf swing this afternoon</em>." </p>
<p><strong>5. The Twitter pitch</strong></p>
<p>This pitch has two advantages. The platform, and the 140 character limit. Approaching people this way forces you to summarize what you do and what you're about very simply and concisely.</p>
<p>It also encourages people to take the next step — to click a link, to share the Tweet, to respond — and imposes a very low cost of doing so. </p>
<p><strong>6. The Pixar pitch</strong></p>
<p>According to Emma Coats, a former story artist at Pixar, every film has the same deep structure in six sentences, which has helped contribute to the studio's massive success.</p>
<p>Once upon a time ____________. Every day, _________. One day _______________. Because of that, ____________. Because of that, __________________. Until finally ______________.</p>
<p>Try applying it to your favorite Pixar movie — it works. More than that, it lets you tell a business or other dilemma as a story, which is extremely powerful, and gives you a structure with which to do it.</p>
<p>So skip the elevator pitch, and give these new strategies a shot instead. </p>

New Delhi, Japanese auto major Honda is all set to introduce its India-made mid-sized SUV Elevate in the <keyword id="859755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="japanese-market" source="Orion">Japanese market</keyword> next year. It would be the first instance that a product manufactured by <keyword id="1381889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="honda-cars-india" source="Orion">Honda Cars India</keyword> Ltd (HCIL), a wholly-owned unit of the Japanese firm, will be exported to the highly regulated Japanese market. <br /><br /> HCIL is rolling out Elevate from its Tapukara (Rajasthan-based) production facility. <br /><br /> "After its successful debut in India earlier this year, Elevate is scheduled for Spring 2024 launch in the Japanese market under the brand name WR-V," an HCIL spokesperson said in a statement. <br /><br /> In a first for HCIL, the model will be manufactured in India and exported to Japan, it added. <br /><br /> "This strategic move is a strong reflection of manufacturing capabilities of India operations and also solidifies our vision of making the country a key export hub in Honda business," the spokesperson said. <br /><br /> The company's Tapukara-based plant is fully equipped to take care of the domestic as well as export requirements, the spokesperson added. <br /><br /> HCIL introduced Elevate in the domestic market in September this year. <br /><br /> Starting with the model, the company aims to introduce five SUV models in the domestic market by 2030. <br /><br /> The company also plans to bring a battery-electric version of Elevate within the next three years. <br /><br /> The model is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a six-speed manual and a seven-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT).

<p><span>"Most people can't present what they've done effectively," <span>Paul McDonald, a senior executive director at staffing firm Robert Half, tells Business Insider. "They're not used to giving sound bites of what they do."</span></span></p>
<p>Below, McDonald gives us eight steps to crafting the perfect <keyword id="157581" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Elevator-pitch">elevator pitch</keyword>:</p>
<h3>1. Know exactly where you want to go.</h3>
<p>Your elevator pitch should answer three questions: Who are you? What do you do? Where do you want to go, or what are you looking for? You need to know exactly what you want to achieve or no one can help you get there.</p>
<p><span>"Take your resume and LinkedIn profile and go through it thoroughly," says <span>McDonald. If you're unemployed, focus on where you want to go and what you want to do.</span></span></p>
<h3>2. Bullet point it.</h3>
<p>After studying your resume and LinkedIn profile, write down four bullet points that explain why you're great, advises McDonald. Discuss your work history, background, skills, accomplishments, and goals. Keep out any irrelevant details that take away from your core message.</p>
<h3>3. Tell them a story.</h3>
<p>People love stories, says McDonald, so tell them a story. It also makes it easier for others to remember you later on.</p>

In other words, if you want people to remember you, tell them a story and make sure it's good.</span></p>
<h3>4. Eliminate jargon.</h3>
<p>You need to be able to explain what you do and who you are in a way that appeals to most people. This means avoiding acronyms or terminology that wouldn't be understood by someone outside of your industry.</p>
<p><span>Dumbing down complex ideas is a "real art," says McDonald. A good strategy is to imagine <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-most-misunderstood-jobs-2013-9">explaining what you do</a> to your parents and using a similar formula in your elevator pitch. Making sure your pitch is in layman's terms is especially critical for those in accounting, finance, and technology.</span></p>
<h3>5. Make sure it invites conversation.</h3>
<p><span>After telling your story, the listener needs to be left wanting more. Is your story compelling enough to do this? If not, you need to change your pitch. </span></p>
<h3>6. Time yourself.</h3>
<p>While practicing your pitch, you should time yourself to make sure you can tell your story in 30 seconds. If you can't, cut down details and try again.</p>
<h3>7. Record yourself on video.</h3>
<p>You need to know what you look like to others while you're telling your story. Are you interesting? Are you believable? People will come to their own conclusions while listening to you so make sure you give off a good impression. Relax, act natural, and get comfortable with your story.</p>
<h3>8. Pitch it to your friends and colleagues.</h3>
<p><span>After you've got your story down, practice your elevator pitch with friends and colleagues. Ask them to give you feedback. Ask them what you should do to make it better. Keep practicing and tweaking your pitch until it's natural for you to say aloud and convincing to the listener.</span></p>

<p>The claim was thrown out after video footage showed that when Maurice Owens, 42, got in the elevator, there was nothing on the floor. His back blocks the view of the floor, but when he turns, the peel is on the ground. The footage shows him looking at the camera several times. When the door opens, he steps on the peel and falls.</p>
<p>Owens has been charged with second-degree <keyword id="38935" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fraud">fraud</keyword>.</p>
