UK-based New Wave Energy wants to fit them up with solar panels and small <keyword id="487521" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="wind-turbines">wind turbines</keyword> – so that they can collect solar and <keyword id="83273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wind-energy">wind energy</keyword> right from the sky. These antennas will then turn the electromagnetic radiation into usable DC power and feed it into the grid. The ‘wheel’ was first developed by a small group of students at <keyword id="54274" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="MIT">MIT</keyword>’s <keyword id="1964063" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SENSEable-City-Laboratory">SENSEable City Laboratory</keyword>. Now, the company is expanding its electric automotive capabilities by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lordstown-motors-camping-world-partnering-to-create-first-electric-rv-2020-12">venturing into the electric RV space</a>.</p><p>Meet the roughly $85,350 e-Camper, an electric <keyword id="2372797" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="camper-van">camper van</keyword> for those who "want to both protect and enjoy the outdoor environment," according to a <a href="https://www.levc.com/corporate/news/ecamper/">press release</a>. </p><p>"The campervan market is growing rapidly and, despite these vehicles being used for coastal and countryside adventures which often include national parks and protected areas, they are still powered by petrol or diesel engines," Joerg Hofmann, CEO of LEVC, said in the press release. "This is a major conflict; we can see a shift in consumer attitudes, with demand for greener mobility solutions to help to protect and improve air quality."</p><p>The tiny home on wheels will be built on LEVC's VN5 electric van, which has an electric range of 60 miles, and a hybrid range of 304 miles with help from a 1.3-liter gasoline engine, Rachel Cormack reported for <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/cars/levc-new-electric-camper-based-on-londons-famous-black-cabs-1234622164/">Robb Report</a>. Early pedal-driven cycles used steel bands or solid wooden wheels instead of pneumatic (air-filled) tires, so its little wonder that one variety of early bike was known as the boneshaker. Pneumatic tires were developed in the 1880s, and cyclists have been enjoying fewer headaches ever since.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But even the latest greatest modern pneumatic bicycle tire is useless without a good pump to fill it with air. If you have a bike manufactured any time after the late 19th century, you also need a good bike pump to keep the tires ready to roll. But how to choose the right bike pump?</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">First, you need to think about the most basic consideration: What type of bicycle will the pump serve? Road bikes with narrow tires require a fair amount of pressure, generally between 80 and 130 pounds per square inch (PSI). Mountain bikes with large, thick tires use much lower pressures, generally down around 30 PSI. A general-purpose bike, commonly called a hybrid, will, not surprisingly, fall in the middle, with an average range of 50 to 70 PSI. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It logically follows, then, that the racing bike enthusiast needs a pump capable of creating plenty of pressure and ideally that can do so quickly, while the mountain biker will be served just fine by a pump with a lower output capacity.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beyond basic PSI capacity, next, think about pump size and design. Do you need to carry the pump along with you during a multi-day bike camping trip? Or during an all-day road race that will take you far away from the nearest support infrastructure? Then a lightweight and portable pump is a must. Or are your rides mostly around town for commuting and recreation? If so, a larger floor pump stored in the closet or in a shed is just fine.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And finally, how serious of a cyclist are you? If you have to dust off your bike before each ride, a lower cost pump of midrange quality will suit you fine. In the 18 months since, it has beat out well-heeled competitors for lucrative contracts in Washington, DC, and San Francisco, bringing its total to 70 markets, including many universities. </p><p>"We're dramatically different than we were at the acquisition," Euwyn Poon, the company's president and cofounder, said in an interview. And even since the last time he spoke to Business Insider in March 2019, plans have shifted drastically. </p><p>At the time, Spin wanted to be in at least 100 markets by the end of 2019. It's still about thirty short. </p><p>"We actually made a conscious decision to slow down a little bit of the rollout and to focus on the markets that are doing quite well," Poon said, emphasizing that the company has been instead "figuring out the economics of the business." Economics that, in many cases for the industry at large, have proven finicky. </p><p>That's not to say the frontrunners aren't still growing quickly, but as with any nascent industry, speed bumps have littered their paths. Lime, for instance, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lime-head-of-international-communications-out-amid-management-turmoil-2019-12">saw a tumultuous 2019 that included some C-suite shakeups</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lime-layoffs-markets-shutter-scooter-profitability-2020-1">layoffs</a> amid its international expansion. The company also left 12 cities in January. Bird, which is also worth $2 billion and change after its latest round, <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/Quite-a-shock-Ex-Scoot-employees-laid-off-by-14887826.php">culled some of its ranks in December</a>, including some workers acquired in the purchase of competitor Scoot. </p><p>All the while, no scooter company has publicly declared a profit. Even Uber and Lyft, which both own bike and scooter subsidiaries, haven't disclosed any specific performance from the units to their investors.</p><p>And so Spin ended up at the current crossroads: Growing to more cities, versus focusing on places it's found that work. Picking the latter, data shows, might be the smart choice. Researchers from Cornell University found that a 10% increase in bike availability saw a 12% increase in ridership. That is to say, small increases in the number of available vehicles - mainly scooters, in Spin's case - beget outsize amounts of usage. </p><p>"We're actually still figuring out what makes a market successful," Poon said. "We have this matrix of factors that go into it: population-density, weather, urban layout, and things like that."</p><p>But the most important metric, he said, is revenue-per-scooter-mile. That number is growing, and Ford is eager to see it stay that way. </p><p>That freedom paves the way for a third iteration of scooters. Like other companies, Spin is working on its own in-house design, with help from Ford. That's a big departure from the first version of many shared scooters, which were an out-of-the-box model with branding slapped on. Spin also wants to develop a hybrid model that uses both free-floating and docked scooters. </p><p>"It actually works for all three constituents at once," Poon said. "It's a parking spot for riders, it helps draw customers to businesses who have space and want docks. Bikes and scooters expanded dramatically in the past decade. The president of Ford's scooter company reveals what's next for the micromobility industry.

It sounded gimmicky, like how everything these days is "smart." And I gotta say - I'm a convert. I thought it was enough for me and my lifestyle, but there are models from other brands with 500 watts should you need more power. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The bike comes in three sizes - small for individuals between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-8, medium for 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10, and large for 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-3. Currently, it's only available in black with mint lettering and orange accents. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The bike also comes with a battery charger, which you can plug into your wall. For example, I can attach the handlebars, wheels, pedals, and so forth. But I do have trouble with the fine-tuning, which is pretty important. If that sounds a bit steep or you'd prefer to choose who puts your bike together, consider coordinating with a local shop to have your bike sent directly to it for assembly.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But, of course, if you're particularly adept at bike assembly - I'm clearly not - you might want to give it a shot yourself and save a few bucks. Keep in mind though you might be on your own since your bike probably won't come with instructions - at least mine didn't. </span></p><h2><strong>What makes the e-bike stand out</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PS6LDKY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_071119_schwinn-monroe-e-bike-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07PS6LDKY&amp;linkId=4bcaa489759b1b3215f36340157f1a2f" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Amazon</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></a></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When buying a bike, it's important that it fits you correctly. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I didn't have the opportunity to try out the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PS6LDKY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_071119_schwinn-monroe-e-bike-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07PS6LDKY&amp;linkId=4bcaa489759b1b3215f36340157f1a2f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Monroe</a> before it arrived so I was going on faith. I was also sent the medium frame version, which was slightly small for me, but fortunately, the build ended up being just right for how I like to ride. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My review bike didn't come with a user manual so I had to play around with the bike for about five minutes before I figured out how it worked. Basically, the bike turns on once you hold down the power button for a couple of seconds, and the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">key is meant to release the battery for easier charging - not for ignition.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I finally rode the bike, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">I discovered that I couldn't be completely lazy. You can't just sit on the bike and have it zoom you around town - you actually have to pedal to engage the electric motor.  </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are five speeds that you can adjust on the thumb pad controller by the left handle. The LED display shows you how much assistance you're getting and how much battery is left. When you want to stop, just squeeze the brake levers and the motor is cut off. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At first, I was nervous about the bike going 20 miles an hour. On my long rides on a hybrid bike, I averaged 15 mph, but once I got going, I realized that 20 mph isn't a big deal. And similar to how you can change gears on a multi-speed bike, you can choose how much the motor assists you too.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> If you're having trouble going up a hill, you can choose more assistance to maintain your speed.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I pedaled hard, the bike was able to get up to 20 mph in about 10 seconds on smooth, flat surfaces. Going up hills though, it would max out at about 15 mph. Lighter people might be able to get it going a bit faster - I weigh 250 pounds for context. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite my weight and the strain it put on the motor, I found that the bike really does have a 45-mile range on a single charge. I didn't have a chance to precisely time how long the battery takes to charge from empty, but it recharged completely overnight or during a full workday.</span></p><h2><strong>Cons to consider</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As mentioned above, you have to pedal to engage the electric assistance though you don't have to pedal much to approach max speeds. Nonetheless, I wish there was a way to zip around town without having to pedal at all - I get lazy sometimes. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PS6LDKY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_071119_schwinn-monroe-e-bike-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07PS6LDKY&amp;linkId=4bcaa489759b1b3215f36340157f1a2f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Monroe 250</a> is also quite heavy at nearly 45 pounds. For comparison, my main bike - the </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rei-co-op-cycles-hybrid-bike-review-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">REI Co-op Cycles CTY 2.1</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> - is bigger and weighs a little more than 30 pounds. The added weight makes the Monroe a pain to lug into our basement for storage. Fortunately, when riding, I can't tell that it weighs more than my other bikes.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The e-bike doesn't come with the accessories you'd typically want for commuting, such as fenders and racks. Even with 90-degree heat pounding down on me, I arrived at my destinations sweat-free, which is a real accomplishment for me since simply living usually leaves me drenched.</span></p><h3><strong>Should you buy it?</strong></h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you're considering an e-bike, or any bike, we'd recommend taking it for a test drive first. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fortunately, with many bikes sold by Amazon, there's a 30-day return policy so you could potentially try it before fully committing</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Regardless, I'm incredibly picky about what bikes I like and the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PS6LDKY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_071119_schwinn-monroe-e-bike-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07PS6LDKY&amp;linkId=4bcaa489759b1b3215f36340157f1a2f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Monroe 250</a> passed my tests. Plus, it's more affordable <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-bikes-with-tech-features-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">compared to others that start at $2,000</a>. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As I was riding the bike, I kept thinking that it'd be a great alternative for people who are sedentary but are trying to get into exercising - this is a good transition bike. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also think it would be an ideal bike for commuters who have to ride over steep hills to and from work because it has different assistance gears that'll prevent you from </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">getting too sweaty. If either of the above scenarios sounds familiar, definitely consider picking up the Schwinn Monroe.</span></p><h3><strong>Which model should you get?</strong></h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you're between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-8, get the small. If between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10, try the medium. And if between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-3, go with large. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At 6-feet tall, I found the medium was a little small for me, but it wasn't horrible. Tesla is a $50-billion-market-cap company after all - larger by that measure that Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles!</p><p>But you'd be wrong.</p><p>Nor is Uber the biggest change I've seen. Nor the advent of high-end luxury air travel, low-cost carriers, or even a rising number of private jets.</p><p>High-speed rail? Not so much in the US. Flying cars? Nope.</p><p>By far the biggest transportation change I've seen is the explosion in bicycle riding. I lived away from the New York area over a decade ago, and while I rode a bike when I lived in NYC, I was unprepared for the proliferation of bikes on my return.</p><p>Now that the summer months have arrived in force, I see more bikes than ever.</p><h2>Bikes, bikes, everywhere</h2><p>Bike-sharing schemes like CitiBike have two-wheeled conveyances scattered throughout Manhattan. And although everybody in the 1990s got used to dodging bike messengers, nowadays we dodge commuters - or folks who just want to ride across the Brooklyn Bridge. There are bike lanes everywhere - and bike-oriented traffic signals. Cycling has boomed in many other American cities. Whereas 20 years ago, you took your life into your own hands if you tried to ride from New York's Upper East Side to Midtown, these days a vast flotilla of bikes has been integrated into the city's transportation ecosystem.</p><p>"More than three-quarters of a million New Yorkers ride a bike regularly-250,000 more than just five years ago." the NYC Department of Transportation said in its "<a href="http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bicyclists/cyclinginthecity.shtml">Cycling in the City</a>" report.</p><p>"It is estimated that over 450,000 cycling trips are made each day in New York City-triple the amount taken 15 years ago."</p><p>Honestly, I didn't see this coming, but I'm glad it did. One of the biggest transportation changes underway has nothing to do with driverless cars

<p>Probably the most obvious is safety - no one wants to get hit by a car. But beyond that very valid concern are other gripes, a common one being ... sweat.</p>
<p>All that pedaling makes you perspire, and many companies don't have showers for employees to use. And who wants to start their day sitting at their desk feeling all gross?</p>
<p>I have some firsthand experience as I ride to work a few days week, from Brooklyn into Manhattan, a 40-minute ride each way. By the time I get into the city, especially in the summer, I've got a sweaty brow and an uncomfortable coat of perspiration. It takes a while to cool down, too, and there's only so much that taking a birdbath in the restroom can do to cool you off. (I keep a extra shirts in my desk in case it's really hot.)</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Another issue, for some anyway, is that it's really tough to get up steep climbs and haul heavy loads, like stuffed backpacks and bags of groceries.</p>
<p>Enter the e-bike, whose electric motor helps you as you pedal along, making it easier to get up to speed and maintain it. In Europe they're loving them.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div> Another benefit of e-bikes, as with all bikes, is that they help you avoid traffic and thus get around faster. One company, Smart, has a video on YouTube showing a woman making it into work early, before all her coworkers. She looks decidedly fresh, thanks to her e-bike.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div> This week <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/business/e-bike-sales-are-surging-in-europe.html">The New York Times</a>' Danny Hakim wrote about surging e-bike sales in Europe. Several people interviewed said they could do without the sweat factor: "I have a regular bike," one cyclist told Hakim, but "I wanted something I could commute to work in so I wasn't hot and sweaty when I arrived."</p>
<p>Although e-bikes have been around for a while, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/business/e-bike-sales-are-surging-in-europe.html">sales are really booming in the eurozone</a>, as The Times reports [emphasis added]:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">With tens of millions of e-bikes already on the road in China, e-bike sales are now surging in Europe, especially in northern countries with long cycling traditions. <strong>For some markets, e-bikes have recently been the only area of growth.</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">There are 250,000 on the road in Switzerland, according to the European Cyclists' Federation. In Germany, bike sales were down 5.5 percent last year, but sales of more expensive <strong>e-bikes were up almost 8 percent and now command about 11 percent of the market.</strong> In the Netherlands, which has Europe's highest per capita bicycle usage, the overall bike market fell slightly last year, but <strong>e-bike sales rose more than 9 percent.</strong></p>

On average, an e-bike in Europe will set you back about $2,700, The Times noted. In the U.S., for example, California-based Specialized sells <a href="http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/ebike/turbo-s/turbo">this higher-end bike with an "electric-assist motor" for $3,800</a>:</p>

Besides being a good-looking bike, it weighs a reasonable 42 pounds and costs $3,000:</p>

Some say they "<a href="http://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-gear/gear-shed/cycle-life/The-Case-for-E-Bikes.html">breed laziness</a>," as Outside suggested earlier this year. Others argue that they're too expensive and downright dangerous. As The Times points out, e-bikes are not all that popular in the U.S., not yet anyway, in part because in states such as New York they are <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/business/e-bike-sales-are-surging-in-europe.html">regulated like motorcycles</a>.</p>

A lot of people who bike say riding makes them feel more positive and decreases their stress levels. That's because when you ride <a href="http://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/exercise-depression">your body releases chemicals called endorphins</a>, which make you feel happy.</p>
<p>On an e-bike, you're pedaling but not as hard or as often as you might on a regular bike. That said, you're still pedaling. So at some point endorphins should be flowing.</p>

<p>President Barack Obama called Mandela one of the <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/12/05/mandela-dies-age-95/">"</a><a href="http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/12/05/mandela-dies-age-95/">most influential, courageous, and profoundly good" people to have ever lived.</a></p>

At the age of 17, Musk immigrated to America from South Africa and made his billions after co-founding PayPal.</p>
<p>Later, he invested in startups Tesla and space flight company Space X, which are both now major players in their industries. This year, Tesla posted profits for the first time, and Space X managed to disrupt aeronautics when it launched its first major commercial satellite into orbit.</p>
<p>Musk also made headlines this year when he proposed designs for his Hyperloop, which is a transportation mode allowing people to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 35 minutes.</p>

The businessman also <a href="http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-08-05/national/41085661_1_washington-post-co-jeff-bezos-graham">bought The Washington Post for $250 million</a> in cash earlier this year.</p>
<p>Bezos revealed that Amazon is currently testing drones to deliver packages within 30 minutes in a recent interview with journalist Charlie Rose. He's often dubbed the next Steve Jobs.</p>

Since launching Warby Parker in 2010, business has been booming. This year, they opened Warby Parker's flagship store and are now considered a competitor of Luxottica, a $20 billion company that owns most of the eyewear industry.</p>
<p>The company also donates one pair of glasses to developing countries for every pair sold.</p>

<p>He's already wildly successful as the CEO of online shoe and accessories company Zappos, but more than that, Hsieh strongly believes in transforming Las Vegas into the smartest, most "community-minded" city in the world. So much so that he invested $350 million of his own money into the Downtown Project.</p>
<p>By the end of this year, Hsieh has announced that 1,500 of Zappos employees will relocate to Las Vegas' City Hall building downtown. His project includes an impressive, major new transit service, which incorporates shared electric cars and bicycles, shuttles, and chauffeured vehicles all for a monthly fee.</p>

<p>Being one of the small handful of women CEOs didn't stop Ahrendts from also being the U.K.'s highest-paid chief executive in 2012. After taking the reins as CEO of Burberry in 2006, the brilliant businesswoman rebranded the company as a high-fashion house worth an estimated $10.4 billion.</p>
<p>She was listed on the Forbes list of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women in 2013. In October, it was announced that Ahrendts would step down as CEO of Burberry and join Apple as its retail chief.</p>

<p>This year has been an incredible year for Netflix and a lot of that success is attributed to Hastings' leadership. Netflix's stock surged by 260% this year, and the company's original content picked up 14 Emmy nominations, including a nod for its political thriller "House of Cards."</p>

<p>Ansel's cronut - a doughnut-croissant hybrid - turned the pastry world upside down with its exclusivity and notoriously long lines. Dubbed "the cronut wizard," Ansel created a craze in New York City within days of unleashing his cronut during the summer. He has since partnered with the restaurant chain Shake Shack and published his book <a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dominique-ansel-dominique-ansel/1116541155?ean=9781476764191" target="_blank">"Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes."</a></p>

<p>At the age of 11, Yousafzai was writing under a pseudonym for the BBC, detailing what it's like to live under Taliban rule. In 2009, the New York Times filmed a documentary about her life. Today, as a 16-year-old, Yousafzai is an influential communicator and education activist. In Oct. 2012, she was shot in the back of the head <span>by Taliban gunmen</span>, but survived the assassination attempt.</p>
<p>Yousafzai was the recipient of the UN 2013 Human Rights Prize and is the youngest person to have ever been a Nobel Prize nominee.</p>

<p>She's the tech genius who became one of the youngest CEOs of a Fortune 500 company. Since joining Yahoo, Mayer has rebranded the company with a new home page and logo and orchestrated 17 acquisitions. This includes the $1.1 billion purchase of blogging service Tumblr.</p>
<p>Since Mayer joined a little over one year ago, Yahoo's stock price has doubled.</p>
