<ul><li><keyword id="8080458" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhiteHat-Jr">WhiteHat Jr</keyword> is the latest venture of former Discovery Networks CEO, <keyword id="327937" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karan-Bajaj">Karan Bajaj</keyword>.</li><li>This edtech startup helps children between the age of 6 and 14 build market-ready apps, games and animations online, by using the fundamentals of coding.</li><li>The idea is to train children from an early age and instill in them a spirit of creation. </li><li>Following the initial success of the venture, Bajaj is confident it will do well in global markets too and will soon come up with a plan to take WhiteHat Jr to other countries.</li></ul> Barely a year after launching <keyword id="6345492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="edutech-startup">edutech startup</keyword> WhiteHat Jr, former Discovery Networks CEO and founder Karan Bajaj is firming up plans to take it international. Based in Mumbai, this edutech startup helps children between the ages of 6 and 14 build market-ready apps, games and animations online, using the fundamentals of coding. Within a year of its launch, Bajaj shares that WhiteHat Jr received a phenomenal reception from parents in India and is therefore hopeful that the global market will accept the product too. Since an edutech platform like this doesn’t really exist anywhere else currently, it is expected to do well even outside India. He adds that starting December, they will start pushing the startup internationally. The idea for starting WhiteHat Jr came to Bajaj when he was reading about the Industrial Revolution and how Mathematics hadn’t been a part of school curriculum till then. “After the Industrial Revolution, every school had to create a new curriculum but it took them 10 years to implement that. I realized something similar is happening now. Today, consumer tech is at the center of every household but the school curriculums are extremely basic. Nobody is teaching children coding from an early age,” explains Bajaj. Why parents are invested in the idea As a part of WhiteHat Jr’s curriculum, a six and a half year old Venkat Raman Patnaik developed a reward management system app that keeps a record of a ‘to-do’ list for school children, along with reward points that they earn for it. Similarly, 7-year-old Hirranyaa Rajani created a sign language app for the hearing impaired that benefits those with hearing impairment and those who want to learn sign language. Bajaj says that parents are welcoming WhiteHat Jr wholeheartedly because they are seeing the world changing in front of their eyes. With more and more automation disrupting the industry, a lot of jobs are getting redundant. “With automation, conventional occupations are getting disrupted. And more and more parents are aware of that,” says Bajaj. The startup has been witnessing 100% month-on-month growth since its launch in November 2018. “Between November and March, we were forming the product in beta and launched in April. After that, we doubled every month. We also raised our Series A funding very quickly in June, so the response we’ve been getting indicates that parents are quite aware of everything,” he adds. While their current curriculum caters to children between the ages of 6-14, Bajaj says they will soon launch a curriculum for 9-12 grades too. How WhiteHat Jr works The model of WhiteHat Jr is simple. It is a web-based system, much like a virtual classroom, and the teacher to student ratio is 1:1. The kids have to book a session online which then connects them to the teachers. There is also a coding platform where the participants can practice coding. Each session is around 45 minutes to an hour long. The sessions encourage children to develop apps, games and animation. “We are sending the top 1% of these kids to the US for a week-long mentorship with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. We also have an in-house team that helps them think on how to take a product and make it more market-ready,” says Bajaj. Currently, around 3,000 students and 350 teachers are on-board. It is also heartening to see children from non-metro cities are coming on board too. The metro to non-metro ratio is about 55:45. The future of WhiteHat Jr In November, when Bajaj started the company, he raised a seed funding of $1.3 million. He has just raised a Series A of $10 million. “Right now we are running a positive cash flow business, so there’s no immediate need for more funding right now,” explains Bajaj. The entity’s marketing and growth strategy would be linked to acquiring more users. “Right now we’ve only been doing B2C digital marketing but next we want to enter school channels and build more alliances. Till now, we’ve only done performance marketing but the outpouring of demand has been significant,” he adds. Bajaj further adds that they might consider an ad campaign after their next round of funding and has a plan to go global. “Taking the organization global is an important part of the plan because nobody has ever heard of a six-year-old creating apps and products that are disruptive and market-ready. So I think it has a great potential globally too where parents have already seen consumer tech to be the centre of their households. The idea that their kids can be a part of a technologically-driven future or create that future is a resonant idea globally. Starting December, we're going to push for international markets, but those plans are still being defined,” Bajaj says.

Former Discovery CEO Karan Bajaj’s edutech startup WhiteHat Jr to go global soon

New Delhi, Feb 7 () Edu-tech major BYJU'S on Friday said it has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from General Atlantic, an existing investor in the company. While BYJU'S did not disclose the quantum of investment, sources said General Atlantic has pumped in USD 200 million (about Rs 1,420 crore) into the company. The investment is part of an ongoing funding that had seen Tiger Global invest a similar amount into the edu-tech company. The sources added that BYJU'S has raised over USD 1.3 billion and the current round values it at about USD 8.2 billion. "General Atlantic has been one of our strongest partners and this additional investment shows their confidence in our vision, growth and future. We are happy to see an ever increasing acceptance for our learning programs in small towns across the country," BYJU'S founder and CEO Byju Raveendran said in a statement. He added that over 65 per cent of BYJU'S students are from outside the top 10 cities. "This is a validation of how technology can make high-quality learning content more accessible to students, irrespective of their geographies. In fact, technology as an enabler has a lot of potential to further innovate the way in which learning can be made personalised and impactful," he said. BYJU'S has 42 million registered users and 3 million paid subscribers. Students are spending 71 minutes on the app daily and the annual renewal rates are 85 per cent. It also tripled its revenue from Rs 520 crore to Rs 1,480 crore in FY18-19, and turned profitable on a full-year basis. The company is on track to double its revenue to Rs 3,000 crore in the current financial year. BYJU'S has learning programs for students in classes 1 to 12. Currently, it is working on launching programs in vernacular languages, and will also launch 'BYJU'S Online Tutoring Program' in the coming months. SR RVK

General Atlantic invests USD 200 mn in BYJU'S

As per a recent <keyword id="2325711" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscomm">NASSCOMM</keyword> report, India continues to harbour the third largest startup base, marginally behind the UK. 
 Titled "Indian Startup Ecosystem Maturing - 2016", it states that the ecosystem is poised to grow by 2.2X to reach more than 10,500 <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> by 2020. 
 
The report released on the sidelines of Nasscom Product Conclave 2016 in Bengaluru on Wednesday predicted continued growth in the number of startups in 2016, with Bengaluru, NCR, and Mumbai continuing to lead as the major startup hub for the nation. 
 
In terms of vertical growth, investors are looking at domain like Healthtech, Fintech, and Edutech. With a total funding of approximately $4 billion, close to 650 startups were funded signifying an aware and healthy growth of the ecosystem. 
 
R Chandrashekhar, president, Nasscom, said, "Technology startups are creating a new identity for India and its technological prowess. They are defining the way the world operates making life better and easier for people and businesses alike. Our startup report is a testimony to the potential of the startup landscape and the scope of growth and opportunity that India presents. Nasscom has always been working towards creating a heterogeneous bond between all stakeholders and craft a conducive and innovative environment for start-ups to grow." 
 
According to the report, the number of tech startups in India is expected to grow by 10-12% to over 4,750 startups by the end of 2016. 
 
Interestingly, over 1,400 new startups emerged in 2016 denoting that that the ecosystem is becoming prudent with both investors and startup founders focusing on profitability and optimising the overall spend. With this impetus, India will become home to over 10,500 startups by 2020, employing over 210,000 people reveals the report. 
 
Furthermore, incubators and accelerators are playing a substantial role in strengthening the startup community throughout India. The report highlights the significant rise in number of accelerators to improve startups' outcomes and provide them with a support that they require. 
 
With impetus from the government and corporates, there is a 40% increase in the number of active incubators and accelerators in 2016 with over 140 active incubators, helping entrepreneurs experiment with new ideas by offering them functional expertise and resources. 
Over 30 new academic incubators have been established under the government's 'Startup India Standup India' initiative this year. With the country showing signs of increased interest in entrepreneurship, Tier-II/III cities have established 66% of the new incubators. 
 
The report reveals an increased interest from student entrepreneurs this year. Growth of 25% has been witnessed in 2016 with over 350 startups founded by young students. Median age of startup founders has reduced marginally from 32 years in 2015 to 31 years in 2016. 
 
Talking about investments, the report states that investors are increasingly looking at opportunities in startups in areas other than online retailing. The sentiments are high for ventures in verticals like Fintech, Healthtech, Edutech, data analytics, B2B commerce and artificial intelligence.

The platform which started off by enabling fee payments online saw a billion dollars worth of transactions. They are now growing from being just a payment enabler platform to offer an umbrella of services. They already have more than 10,000 partnerships in their kitty and are building products across commerce, payments, financial services and marketplace. “Deep dive is a very normal and natural process for us, the way we did with payments (even though it’s a stack), travel and more. Education is a massive opportunity for us,” Vineet Kaul, VP, Paytm Education told Business Insider on the sidelines of the India Education Entrepreneurship Day organised by TiE Delhi. Kaul broke down the several sectors within education that Paytm is entering. Fee transactions – already a billion dollar platform The payments segment was the obvious first choice for Paytm Education by offering its fee payment business and also point-of-sale devices on campuses. Online application – From nursery to government exams Through commerce, Paytm Education is hoping to turn applications online. Kaul gives the example of forms for nursery education in India, for which parents have to stand in long queues. “Now they can do everything online. We are contacting as many schools as possible, parents can also see schools nearby and apply for a number of schools through a single form,” said Kaul. This is also applicable for engineering and government exams. “A lot of the applicants don’t have access to a computer. We are trying to ease out the processes and are also working with the government,” said Kaul. Fee protection – a first in the country Through financial services, Paytm Education is offering co-branded smart debit card for students which also gives them an early taste of financial literacy. “We have also come up with insurance for students. Fee protection for students and that’s a first in the country. Due to unforeseen circumstances, if something happens to the source of income of the parent or guardian, education wouldn’t come to a grinding halt,” said Kaul. In addition, Paytm also wants to enter the crowded coaching business. They are working on a marketplace model where they are democratising the process of choosing a coaching institute.

The investment, which will go towards bringing on board more educators and better the product, also saw the founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini participate in the round. “In the last few months, we have taken bigger strides toward achieving this mission. We have more than 400 top educators from across the country taking live classes every day on Unacademy Plus. This is available to every student, irrespective of their location,” said Munjal. Unacademy plus is the startup’s subscription plan which has more than 50,000 learners. The startup, which was founded in 2015, has over 13 million learners. “We are seeing unprecedented growth and engagement from learners in smaller towns and cities, and are also very humbled to see that top-quality educators are choosing Unacademy as their primary platform to reach out to students,” said Munjal. This also shows the growth trajectory of Indian online education space. Online education industry in India is expected to hit 9.6 million by 2021 user base, which was 1.6 million in 2016, as per a KPMG report. In fact, a survey by education startup GradeUp also shows that students are counting on online teaching for competitive exams — JEE, NEET, GATE, SSC and banking exams. Meanwhile, the big player in Indian <keyword id="1974983" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Edutech">edutech</keyword> space remains Byju’s – which had recently reported profitability with an increase in the number of paid users. Its revenue has tripled to reach ₹14.3 billion in the financial year ending March 2019, though it has not shared the net profit numbers. This volume of numbers has also brought in the renewed interest of investors, who are betting on the Indian education technology space. Unacademy raises $50 million as Byju’s success draws top dollars into online education in India

New Delhi, Mar 11 () In view of the coronavirus scare, edu-tech major BYJU'S on Wednesday said it will provide free access to its complete app to school students till April.The announcement comes following advisory for schools to remain closed to safeguard the health of students. Students across classes 1-12 can download and access BYJU'S learning programs for free until the end of April, BYJU'S said in a statement.Students in classes 1-3 can access Maths and English lessons and students in classes 4-12 can learn Maths and Science concepts on the BYJU'S app. They can download BYJU'S-The Learning App and Disney BYJU'S Early Learn for free from the Play Store and gain access to the entire library of BYJU'S educational content, the statement said. Students with the pre-installed app (free version) will need to update it in order to access the complete learning content for free.Citing an UNESCO report, BYJU'S said education of over 290 million students across 13 countries will be interrupted because of the COVID-19 crisis. <keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> on Wednesday expanded its programme for startups to support startups working on the solutions to solve real-life challenges towards the new normal post COVID-19 landscape in India. <keyword id="9416148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups">Google for Startups</keyword> has opened applications for the new batch of <keyword id="9416150" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups-accelerator">Google for Startups Accelerator</keyword>, with a special focus on health-tech, fin-tech, edu-tech, agri-tech, retail and SaaS startups, the company said in a statement. The next batch will commence in August 2020 and the last date of applications is June 30. This will be the fourth class of startups mentored by Google, which has so far closely mentored over 60 startups in India to date. "We have been working very closely with over 250 Startups founders over the last two months, holding consults with our network of experts, mentors and VCs to help solve for the immediate challenges faced by the founder community," informed Paul Ravindranath G, Programme Manager, Google for <keyword id="9416146" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups-accelerator-india">Startups Accelerator India</keyword>. In addition to the fresh call for applications, Google for Startups also announced the launch of 'Emerging stronger: Playbook' for startups to face the Covid-19 Challenge. "We have captured the work of these last two months into a handy playbook which we hope will benefit the larger ecosystem," Ravindranath added. Google launches program to support Indian startups creating solutions for post COVID-19 world

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Consumer electronics maker Panasonic India has ventured into education sector by launching two education-based solutions CareerEx and XcelIT, and aims to impact around one lakh students by 2025.
Both the solutions are designed and developed at Panasonic's India Innovation Centre (IIC) for the students, colleges and universities to bridge the existing skill gap between current education and employment needs for the future, the firm said in a statement.
CareerEx has been designed to address the needs of college and university students to advance their skillset with emerging technologies such as Data Science, Cloud Computing, Machine Learning/AI and Internet of Things.
XcelIT is designed for school students primarily residing in Tier II &amp; III cities to make them ready for all competitive exams.
"Through the launch of CareerEx and XcelIT, we hope to develop another innovative Edu-tech solution to upskill technology talent pool to address the unemployment rate amongst urban youth and at the same time cater to the demands of industry. We are looking to positively impact nearly 1,00,000 students over next 5 years," Panasonic India Innovation Centre Head Atsushi Motoya said.
CareerEx and XcelIT are available on both Android and iOS application stores.
Panasonic has also collaborated with specialised educational partners for this programme.
