The platform which started off by enabling fee payments online saw a billion dollars worth of transactions. They are now growing from being just a payment enabler platform to offer an umbrella of services. They already have more than 10,000 partnerships in their kitty and are building products across commerce, payments, financial services and marketplace. “Deep dive is a very normal and natural process for us, the way we did with payments (even though it’s a stack), travel and more. Education is a massive opportunity for us,” Vineet Kaul, VP, Paytm Education told Business Insider on the sidelines of the India Education Entrepreneurship Day organised by TiE Delhi. Kaul broke down the several sectors within education that Paytm is entering. Fee transactions – already a billion dollar platform The payments segment was the obvious first choice for Paytm Education by offering its fee payment business and also point-of-sale devices on campuses. Online application – From nursery to government exams Through commerce, Paytm Education is hoping to turn applications online. Kaul gives the example of forms for nursery education in India, for which parents have to stand in long queues. “Now they can do everything online. We are contacting as many schools as possible, parents can also see schools nearby and apply for a number of schools through a single form,” said Kaul. This is also applicable for engineering and government exams. “A lot of the applicants don’t have access to a computer. We are trying to ease out the processes and are also working with the government,” said Kaul. Fee protection – a first in the country Through financial services, Paytm Education is offering co-branded smart debit card for students which also gives them an early taste of financial literacy. “We have also come up with insurance for students. Fee protection for students and that’s a first in the country. Due to unforeseen circumstances, if something happens to the source of income of the parent or guardian, education wouldn’t come to a grinding halt,” said Kaul. In addition, Paytm also wants to enter the crowded coaching business. They are working on a marketplace model where they are democratising the process of choosing a coaching institute.

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Expenses of a student on books, stationery and uniform in rural India on an average are over 10 percentage points higher than those in urban areas, although participation in <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> system has seen improvement at all levels, according to the <keyword id="6354872" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-survey">Economic Survey</keyword>. As per the Economic Survey 2019-20 tabled in the Parliament by Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, the absence of suitable financial support system and high burden of course fee, especially in higher education, pushes the poor and underprivileged out of the education system. Citing data from the National Sample Survey (NSS) report on 'Key Indicators of Household Social Consumption on Education in India 2017-18', the survey said that in 2017-18, there were about 13.6 per cent persons of age 3 to 35 years who were never enrolled in the education system.
 "The reasons they cite for not enrolling were 'not interested in education' and 'financial constraints'," it said.
 Among those who were enrolled, drop-out rate was as high as 10 per cent at primary level, 17.5 per cent at upper primary/middle, and 19.8 per cent at secondary level, the survey added.
 Highlighting the challenges for 'Education for All' initiative, the survey said the composition of various components of expenditure on education indicates that the course fees, which is 50.8 per cent at all India level, among others contributes about half of the average expenditure of a basic course.
 Course fees include tuition, examination, developmental fees and other compulsory payments.
 The proportion of course fee is also high in rural and urban areas, it added.
 "The second largest component of average expenditure on education by student is books, stationery and uniform where an average student in the rural areas is surprisingly spending more than 10 percentage points as compared to urban areas," the survey said.
 It also pointed out that students pursuing education in private aided institutions are spending significantly higher as compared to government institutions across rural-urban India.
 Quoting the NSS report, the survey said in 2017-18, the average expenditure of an average student in government institutions pursuing secondary education was Rs 4,078 whereas the same for a student in private aided institution was Rs 12,487.
 When it comes to graduation, the expenditure for an average student in government institutions was at Rs 10,501, while in private aided institutions it was Rs 16,769.
 The survey said "due to absence of competition in government schools/institutions, quality of education in government schools/institutions is low. As a result, more and more students prefer to enrol themselves in private institutions".
 It cited initiatives such as Samagra Shiksha started in 2018-19, which subsumes three erstwhile centrally sponsored schemes of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Teacher Education (TE), as steps taken to provide quality education in government schools and institutions in affordable and competitive manner. <ul><li>As per CARE <keyword id="164127" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rating-agency">rating agency</keyword>, the unemployment rate in India may increase further as a high proportion of students enroll in engineering, vocational and information technology courses. </li><li>Per student, the average expenditure on education in India is ₹8,331. </li><li>According to the report, the average expense for enrolling in a professional course can go as high as ₹72,000 per student. </li><li>Of the total expenses incurred on the education of every student, over half of the amount is spent on tuition and exam fees — and that excludes course material, books and uniform. </li></ul>India is one of the world’s largest economies which is also home to the youngest population. Most of these youngsters are pursuing higher studies and spending more on education. That could be a boon and a curse both as it will increase the already high unemployment rate, says a report by CARE agency. In the last decade, the expenses on general education that includes primary to post graduate courses increased fourfold to ₹8,331 per student per annum.  India's economic growth has been weakening for five straight quarters and is at a six-year low. The sliding economic growth does not bode well for employment opportunities but the cost of education is constantly rising.

 Engineering Employment declines on a monthly basis The unemployment rate in October stood at 8.5% — the highest in three years. According to a recent survey by trade body of IT and staffing <a href="https://www2.staffingindustry.com/site/Editorial/Daily-News/Engineering-shows-first-sign-of-weakness-employment-ticks-down-in-October-report-says-51947">TechServe Alliance</a>, engineering employment is declining on a month-on-month basis. It fell by 0.18% in October compared to September for total employment of near 2.7 million. All this while, education is turning costlier in India. The average expenditure for professional course stood at ₹ 64,763 in urban areas — twice that of in rural India at ₹32,137. According to the report, it can go as high as ₹72,000 per student. The chart below shows a significant rise in expenses as the education level increases. However, the education expenses for technical courses has declined due to higher subsidies, scholarships and growing number of institutes and the resultant competition.

 Where are the returns? But it is yet unknown as to what kind of returns these expenses will provide. “It is of utmost importance that there is sufficient number of jobs created in these fields. In the absence of such jobs, the unemployment rate would tend to increase as qualified students may not be willing to take up jobs which require lower qualification,” it said. But those in urban areas spent three times more at ₹16,308. “This could potentially act as a deterrent for economically weaker sections to continue being enrolled in schools. For this, government intervention needs to come in at the right levels for drop outs to reduce,” the report highlighted. Not only has the number of high school seniors taking a shot at a higher education gone up 13%, but each person is applying to more schools than before. Christopher Rim, founder and CEO of Command Education in New York, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/07/college-admission-applications-spike-as-january-deadline-nears.html">told</a> CNBC that while students were applying to 12 to 15 colleges pre-pandemic, now that range has jumped to 20 to 25 schools. The news isn't so great for low-income students. According to the Common App, 60% of those applications are from the "most affluent" communities — or the top 20th percentile — of zip codes nationwide, while applications from the lowest-income areas made up just 5% of the pool, unchanged from previous years.A primary reason for this disparity comes down to affordability. Applying to college isn't free — it often comes with a $75 fee, and as CNBC reported, those fees generate significant revenue for colleges.
