Venture capitalists are flocking to Phoenix to invest in the growing ed tech sector

New Delhi: The <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> on Wednesday said it will hear on September 17 the appeal of US-based creditor Glas Trust Company LLC against a judgment of the <keyword id="19916400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nclat" source="keywords">NCLAT</keyword>, which had stayed insolvency proceedings against ed-tech firm BYJU's and approved its Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the <keyword id="19901245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="keywords">BCCI</keyword>. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was urged by a battery of lawyers that the plea be heard urgently keeping in mind the subsequent developments in the case. The plea was mentioned by senior advocate NK Kaul, appearing for the ed-tech major, that the case needed to be heard at the earliest. The submission was supported by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the <keyword id="19901245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="keywords">BCCI</keyword>, and senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi, also appearing for the ed-tech firm. Kaul said another plea in the case has also been filed and that is listed for hearing on September 17 and hence, the present plea be either heard on that day or the hearings in both the cases be advanced to this Friday. "We will hear both the pleas on September 17," the CJI said. Senior advocate Shayam Divan, appearing for the US-based creditor, said let the matters be heard together on September 17. Earlier on August 22, the bench had refused to pass an interim order to ensure that the committee of creditors (CoC) does not hold any meeting in pursuance of the insolvency proceedings against the embattled ed-tech firm. It had listed the plea for a final hearing on August 27. The bench had said the developments, which may take place in the meantime, can be negated if it finds there was no merit in the appeal of the US-based creditor against the judgment of appellate insolvency tribunal <keyword id="19916400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nclat" source="keywords">NCLAT</keyword>. The plea was mentioned earlier also on August 20 by Byju's and the BCCI and the top court had then also refused to pass an interim order to restrain the Insolvency Resolution Professional (IRP) from constituting a committee of creditors (CoC) in the insolvency proceedings against the ed-tech firm. In a major setback to Byju's, the top court had on August 14 stayed the verdict of NCLAT, setting aside the insolvency proceedings against the ed-tech major and approving its Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the Indian cricket board. The August 2 verdict of the NCLAT had come as a huge relief for Byju's as it had effectively put its founder Byju Raveendran back in control. The top court, however, had prima facie termed the NCLAT verdict as "unconscionable" and stayed its operation while issuing notices to Byju's and others on the appeal of the ed-tech firm's US-based creditor against the judgment of the insolvency appellate tribunal. The case stemmed from Byju's default on a Rs 158.9 crore payment related to a sponsorship deal with the BCCI. The top court had directed the BCCI to keep a sum of Rs 158 crore it had received from Byju's after a settlement in a separate escrow account till further orders. "Issue notice. Pending further orders there shall be a stay of the impugned order of August 2 of NCLAT. In the meantime, BCCI shall maintain the amount of Rs 158 crore, which shall be realised in pursuance of a settlement, in a separate escrow account until further orders," the bench had said. The NCLAT had approved the Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the BCCI and set aside the insolvency proceedings against Byju's. Byju's had entered into a "Team Sponsor Agreement" with the BCCI in 2019. Under the agreement, the ed-tech firm got exclusive rights to display its brand on the Indian cricket team's kit and some other benefits. Byju's had to pay a sponsorship fee. The company met its obligations till the middle of 2022 but defaulted on subsequent payments of Rs 158.9 crore. After insolvency proceedings were initiated, Byju's entered into a settlement with the BCCI. On July 16, the Bengaluru bench of the <keyword id="19902197" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-company-law-tribunal" source="keywords">National Company Law Tribunal</keyword> (NCLT) had admitted 'Think and Learn', Byju's parent company, to the insolvency resolution process on a plea filed by the BCCI over default in payment of outstanding dues of almost Rs 158.9 crore. While suspending the board of the ed-tech firm, the NCLT had appointed an interim resolution professional to run the operations of the company, suspended the company's board of directors, and brought it under moratorium by freezing its assets. The US-based lenders suspected that the settlement amount was being diverted from the credit they had extended to Byju's.

Understand Your Target Audience A thorough understanding of the end target audience is a must in the education space. To simplify, for a working professional most decisions are taken by them sans any need to consult parents but they are likely to rely on customer feedback or word of mouth before signing up for a program. However, they are the end decision makers and winning their confidence is important for the brand. On the other hand, for brands catering to children and young learners (K-12 audience), consumers and customers are different. The parents are customers and the children are consumers. A constant challenge here will remain to appeal to the students and win the trust of their parents. Often parents see services while kids look at the fun,engaging aspect of the product. And hence as a marketeer one needs to coin communication that appeals to both audiences. To ensure a foolproof campaign make note of your TG and address their specific need. Currently, the company employs 6,000 people and the strength will grow to 8,500 after the expansion. According to the company, the new hires will be at entry and <keyword id="4512110" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mid-level">mid-level</keyword> from <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s premium B-schools and engineering institutes. "With the boom in online learning adoption, we aim to hire highly driven and inspired individuals who can become a part of the Vedantu mission. We are further expanding our presence in tier 2 and 3 markets," said Vamsi Krishna, CEO, and Co-Founder, Vedantu. The e-learning platform last month acquired Instasolv, a doubt-solving app for students from Class 6 to 12 for science, mathematics, IITJEE and NEET, for an undisclosed sum. According to the company, the acquisition will enhance its doubt-solving and reinforce presence in tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. This was Vedantu's first acquisition in an EdTech company to strengthen its focus in the instant doubt-solving space. Vedantu has witnessed six to seven times growth with 75 million hours of classes delivered across its platform last year as millions stayed home. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ITT_Technical_Institute_campus_Canton_Michigan.JPG">Wikimedia Commons</a></div></div></div>For-profit educator ITT Technical Institute announced Monday that it will no longer accept any new enrollments, <a href="https://www.itt-tech.edu/">according to a notice at the top its website.</a>The news came four days after the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-education-department-slapped-serious-sanctions-on-itt-2016-8">US Department of Education (ED) imposed sanctions on ITT Education Services,</a> the college chain's parent company, barring the school from enrolling students who use federal financial aid and requiring ITT to provide a letter of credit showing it's sufficiently funded.Those sanctions will likely cause the demise of ITT Tech, according to Ben Miller, a senior director at the Center for American Progress and a former senior policy advisor at the Department of <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">Education</keyword> (ED)."It is highly unlikely ITT can meet the requirements requested by the Department," Miller told Business Insider. "It does not have the $153 million needed to satisfy the financial conditions and now will not have new students to help bring in revenue."The ED has required ITT Tech to post a $153 million letter of credit on top of the $94 million reserve requirements that it must already meet. The sanctions prohibiting the enrollment of students who use financial aid struck such a blow to ITT Tech because, like most for-profit colleges, it's highly dependent on federal aid.Since ITT Tech must meet the ED's conditions by September 5, Miller anticipates a bleak outlook for the company."Barring a big change, I would guess that by then [ITT] would either have tried to sell itself or will have declared bankruptcy, unless it sues and wins an injunction, which is a possibility but likely difficult," he said.ITT Tech is under multiple federal and state investigations relating to the way the for-profit organization runs its operations. New Delhi, Jan 6 () Entrance test preparation services provider Aakash Educational Services Ltd (AESL) on Monday said it has acquired ed-tech company Applect Learning Systems for Rs 100 crore.
 The company has entered into a definitive agreement with Info Edge (India) Ltd and other selling shareholders to acquire ALSPL, which offers learning programmes under brand name 'Meritnation' catering to students of class I to XII, AESL said in a statement.
 When asked about the value of the deal, a company official said, "it is Rs 100 core for the entire stake."
 In October last year Blackstone had picked up 37.5 per cent stake in Aakash Educational Services for Rs 1,350 crore and announced the intention to create a digitally enabled, omni-channel test preparation company. 
 "As part of this strategy, AESL plans to acquire Meritnation to accelerate the growth of its online live tutoring business and continues to evaluate potential acquisition opportunities," the company said in a statement.
 Commenting on the acquisition, AESL Director and CEO Aakash Chaudhry said, "Meritnation's decade long EdTech experience and leadership in live tutoring technology, will further strengthen AESL's competitive positioning not only in digital education but will also further enable its offline student offering across its 200 classroom centres, teaching over 2,50,000 students".
 Chaudhry further said the company is "continuing to evaluate several acquisition opportunities in the ed-tech space as part of our digital growth strategy, so that we can make our well-crafted student performance journey more productive". RKL DRR

The lamp can connect to a parent's smartphone, with the dual cameras allowing parents to see both their child's face and their homework while video chatting, according to an October <a href="https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/x-_9Ze0zb_G9BjKOWuk2Fg">news release</a> about the product. An iPhone-sized screen on the lamp lets children video chat with parents or tutors. It also has an artificial intelligence-powered digital assistant to help with vocabulary and math problems.The lamp was designed to let busy parents stay involved in their children's studies, according to the news release."When parents work overtime or are away on business, they can use the powerful dual-camera video call function to talk to their children anytime and anywhere," the release reads. "When they see their children, they can see the desktop more clearly, remotely counseling, and they don't miss their children's growth."Promotional images show the lamp is T-shaped and that it comes in two colors - "lake blue" and "cherry blossom powder."A slightly pricier $170 version of the lamp can send alerts and photos to parents when their children slouch, per The Journal.<div type="image" title="supermarket phone man" height="1606" width="2141" msid="83140168" hostid="261"></div>ByteDance sold more than 10,000 of the lamps within a month of launch in October 2020, and the products have gotten "overwhelmingly positive" reviews on Chinese social media, according to The Journal. ByteDance has been selling <a href="https://supchina.com/2021/04/21/edutech-bytedance-invents-entirely-new-product-category-with-dali-smart-lamp/">$1.5 million worth of the smart lamps</a> each month on Tmall, the Chinese e-commerce site operated by Alibaba, according to SupChina, a New York-based, China-focused news site. ByteDance and Alibaba did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on sales figures.Some people have expressed privacy concerns over some of the lamp's functions, like the remote working and the ability for children to upload videos. (ByteDance told The Journal that only videos of homework can be uploaded, and only with parental permission.) China's <a href="https://www.iresearchchina.com/content/details8_66010.html">online education market surpassed $40 billion</a> in 2020 and is <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2020/12/03/2138847/0/en/China-Online-Education-Market-Report-2020-2026-K12-Steam-Education-Leads-the-100-Billion-Market.html">expected to reach $100 billion by 2026.</a>Last July, Chen Lin, a senior vice president at ByteDance, said in an internal meeting that the company planned to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bytedance-education-idUSKCN24N10P">invest a "huge amount"</a> into its education technology business, Reuters reported.<div type="image" title="bytedance headquarters beijing" height="1665" width="2220" msid="83140171" hostid="261"></div>In October, ByteDance launched <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-owner-bytedance-launches-education-technology-brand-dali-for-china-2020-10">its ed-tech brand, Dali Education</a>, and its first education hardware product, the Dali Smart Lamp. Chen, who became Dali's CEO, said in October that the brand already had 10,000 employees. Four months later, ByteDance said it was <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3123407/bytedance-looks-hire-13000-effort-supercharge-its-ed-tech-business">hiring 13,000 new employees</a> at Dali.
