<ul><li>The Indian PC market recorded its second-best quarter with a shipment of 4.49 million devices in Q3 2024.</li><li>The growth in part is due to the online festival sales by e-commerce giants and retailers.</li><li>HP continues to lead the Indian PC market with a share of over 29%.</li></ul> The Indian personal computer or PC market has recorded its second highest-ever shipments at 4.49 million devices in Q3 2024, recording a 0.1% growth year-on-year. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the growth in sales was recorded due to online festival sales which began early this year. “The e-tail sales, which typically start around the second week of October, began in late September, leading to a surge in PC shipments,” said Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager, IDC India &amp; South Asia. In Q3 2024, desktops recorded an 8.1% year-on-year decline, notebooks recorded a 2.8% year-on-year growth and workstations recorded a 2.4% year-on-year growth. Premium notebooks priced above $1,000 recorded a 7.6% year-on-year growth. “Brands capitalized on e-tail sales by offering steep discounts, cashback, and bundled accessories. Many of them also matched similar pricing in their brand stores and offline channels like Larger Format Retail stores (LFRs), leading to the second biggest consumer quarter in history,” Shenoy added. Asus on the other hand reported a decline from 12.5% in Q3 2023 to 9.7% in Q3 2024. “The Commercial PC Market in India is on the recovery path as enterprises have slowly started refreshing their IT devices. India’s PC market reaches new high with 4.49 million shipments in Q3 2024

The rise in <keyword id="20532742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-battery-manufacturing" source="keywords">EV battery manufacturing</keyword>, alongside the '<keyword id="20018809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Make-in-India" source="keywords">Make in India</keyword>' initiative, will lower manufacturing costs and boost <keyword id="19914921" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-sales" source="keywords">EV sales</keyword> in the country, according to industry experts. According to Liz Lee, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, <keyword id="21214947" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indias-EV-landscape" source="Orion">India's EV landscape</keyword> is on the cusp of significant growth. "Government initiatives such as the <keyword id="8941225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLI-scheme" source="Orion">PLI scheme</keyword> for <keyword id="16365365" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Advanced-Chemistry-Cells" source="Orion">Advanced Chemistry Cells</keyword> (ACC) and the recent reduction in import duties on EVs under $35,000 to 15 per cent are game changers," said Lee. All this not only opens doors for <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> but also signals India's readiness to welcome significant investments and foster a new ecosystem for EVs and their component suppliers. "It is a clear sign that India's journey to become a major player in the global <keyword id="186291" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EV" source="Orion">EV</keyword> market is accelerating," Lee noted. The EV ecosystem is in a fairly nascent stage. "While the conventional automobile manufacturing ecosystem is mature, the building blocks for a robust smart car manufacturing ecosystem, from the battery to infotainment to sensors to full ADAS/ADS, beckon," said Research Vice President Neil Shah. "This would span from the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek designing and offering advanced auto components to BlackBerry providing safety and security software, to Foxconn reducing barriers for new entrants to India with its innovative MIH consortium-based 'localised' design and manufacturing model," Shah explained.

India's EV landscape set to be transformed with key govt initiatives: Industry experts

<keyword id="19963112" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Electric-vehicle-sales" source="keywords">Electric vehicle sales</keyword> registered a 55.2 per cent on-year growth at 1,79,038 units in July driven by a massive 96 per cent jump in e-two-wheeler sales, automobile dealers' body <keyword id="20108734" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FADA" source="keywords">FADA</keyword> said on Tuesday. The total <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> sales for July 2023 were at 1,16,221 units, according to the monthly sales data from Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA). The electric two-wheelers sales during the previous month stood at 1,07,016 units, up 95.94 per cent, from 54,616 units sold in July last year, while the electric three-wheeler sales grew 18.18 per cent at 63,667 units, from 58,873 units year earlier, as per FADA. The commercial vehicle sales during the reporting month was also on an upward trajectory, growing two-fold on a year-on-year basis to 816 units, from 364 commercial vehicles sold in July 2023, it stated. Passenger vehicles, however, declined 2.92 per cent at 7,541 units in July, as against 7,768 units in the same month of last year, as per data. "The rising market share in the 2W and 3W <keyword id="22689146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-segments" source="keywords">EV segments</keyword> for July 2024, with YoY growth rates of 95.94 per cent and 18.18 per cent respectively, and a market share of 7.4 per cent and 57.6 per cent, respectively for the month, is a clear indication of the growing acceptance and demand for electric vehicles in India," FADA President Manish Raj Singhania said. The PV segment, while showing a marginal year-on-year decline of 2.92 per cent, maintains a market share of 2.4 per cent, Singhania said, adding that the CV segment has shown remarkable growth with a year-on-year increase of 124.2 per cent and a current (July) market share of 1.02 per cent. The combination of attractive discounts and the anticipation of the discontinuation of the EMPS (Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme), despite its extension, has significantly boosted sales, he said. Announced by the Ministry of Heavy Industries in March, for a four months period-April 1,2024 to July 31,2024 to boost the adoption of EVs across the country with a total outlay of Rs 500 crore, the EMP scheme has now been extended by September 30, while the scheme's outlay has also been increased to Rs 778 crore. Electric vehicle sales rose 55.2% to 1.79 lakh units in July: FADA

As the world celebrates World EV Day, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s significant progress in adopting <keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">electric vehicles</keyword> (EVs) across various categories is commendable, however, there is still a long way to go. The government of India's <keyword id="23096041" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vaahan-Dashboard" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Vaahan Dashboard" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Vaahan Dashboard">Vaahan Dashboard</keyword> data shows an increasing trend to shift towards green mobility solutions. The most notable trend in EV penetration has been witnessed in the three-wheeler category, where EVs have surged ahead in overall sales. According to the data, 53.61% of all new three-wheeler vehicles purchased this year (2024) were electric, making this segment the leader in <keyword id="20421629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-adoption" source="keywords">EV adoption</keyword>. The two-wheeler segment has also shown encouraging signs of EV adoption, with electric vehicles accounting for 4.97% of all two-wheeler sales so far in 2024. Interestingly, the penetration of electric buses is higher than that of electric cars, with 3.20% of all new buses sold in 2024 being electric. "Electric vehicles offer a very compelling solutions because they do not emit any tailpipe emissions so that improves their air quality that reduces their air pollution. It also reduces the carbon emission so it helps India to meet with its climate goals and generally, electric vehicles have lower operating cost as compared to the IC engine vehicles," said Samhita Shiledar, Director RMI to ANI. On a state-wise level, the Vaahan dashboard data highlighted that Goa leads the country in EV penetration, with 14.20% of all new vehicles sold this year being electric. Tripura ranks second, followed by Chandigarh in third place. In the financial year that ended in March 2024, the share of electric two-wheelers was at 5 per cent. Share of EVs in two-wheeler sales rose from just 0.4 per cent in 2020-21 to 5.4 per cent by early 2023, led by rising subsidies and new launches. However, Jefferies claimed that a subsequent reduction in incentives has resulted in the share remaining in the 4-7 per cent range for most of the past 24 months, despite the introduction of lower-priced vehicles by manufacturers. This week, the Union Cabinet has approved a scheme for the promotion of electric mobility in the country. The scheme has an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years. The Cabinet's approval for the 'PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme' was based on a proposal from the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI). Among others, subsidies or demand incentives worth Rs 3,679 crore would be provided to incentivise e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks and other emerging EVs. The scheme will support 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses, a release said. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is also introducing e-vouchers for EV buyers to avail of demand incentives under the scheme.

A project in California's Salton Sea started construction earlier this year. The three sites, expected to come online between 2026 and 2028, would massively increase the US's lithium supply. Since the 1960s, only one site, Silver Peak, in Nevada, has operated in the country.The expansion is aimed at curbing China's control over the metals used in EV batteries and other renewable-energy technologies that countries need to decarbonize their economies. While most of the world's lithium is produced in Australia and South America, some two-thirds of it is processed in China, which also dominates EV-battery manufacturing. The US imports about 25% of its lithium supply from Chile and Argentina, but an analysis of federal data by the Atlantic Council found that it relied on China for about 70% of its lithium-ion batteries in 2023."If we're electrifying the transportation industry, you don't want to rely on any one country," Bernard Rowe, a managing director of Ioneer, which is developing Rhyolite Ridge, told Business Insider. The incentives cover activities including extracting critical minerals like lithium; manufacturing solar, wind, and battery parts; buying EVs; and recycling components.Rowe argued that while the US alone can't meet the skyrocketing demand for lithium due to rising sales of EVs and battery storage, some of the supply has to be sourced domestically for national security reasons.Karl Friedhoff, a fellow for Asia studies at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, agreed. He said there's no world in which the US and its partners can quickly compete with China on critical minerals; China already has so much capacity that it sets global prices."The question then is, can the US and other partner countries create a supply chain that meets their basic requirements," Friedhoff, who's part of a project exploring how the US, Japan, Australia, and India can cooperate to shift supply chains away from China. "Can we supply our own batteries? Can we build our own battery technologies? Do we have enough rare-earth elements for defense?"Based on estimates from Ioneer and other lithium project developers, the US could produce more than enough supply for the 1.4 million EVs sold in the country last year, which accounted for 7% of the auto market.The Biden administration wants EVs to account for at least 50% of car sales by 2030, and states like California and Texas are quickly deploying more battery storage to help balance stressed power grids. In September, the White House said US lithium production was on track to meet one-fifth of global demand outside of China this decade.<h2 id="c11b28df-2899-481e-8b55-b52898315793">Some environmentalists, Native tribes are alarmed</h2>The lithium projects haven't been without controversy, however. The Center for Biological Diversity <a target="_blank" href="https://biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press-releases/blm-grants-final-approval-to-nevada-lithium-mine-threatening-biodiversity-cultural-landscapes-2024-10-24/?_gl=1*jmu4dt*_gcl_au*MTc3Mjg1OTA3Ni4xNzI5ODYzNzkz">has threatened to sue the Biden administration</a> over its permit for Rhyolite Ridge, arguing that the project could drive an endangered wildflower to extinction. He said Ioneer would also monitor the pollinator population and adopt dust-control strategies. The Biden administration, in issuing the permit for the mine, said it would not jeopardize the flower's survival.Some companies are working on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lithium-mining-electric-vehicles-climate-crisis-2023-5">direct lithium extraction techniques</a> that don't involve open-pit mining or large evaporation ponds and therefore could require less land and water and produce less toxic chemical waste. Controlled Thermal Resources is developing such a project in the Salton Sea, where lithium-rich brine is already being used to power geothermal plants.Tapping the US's newly discovered lithium resources likely hinges on the new extraction techniques, which currently cost more than traditional methods and still haven't been used commercially. The US Geological Survey this month estimated that there's enough lithium underneath southwestern Arkansas to meet the projected global demand for car batteries in 2030 nine times over.Actually extracting that lithium, including from brines left over from oil and gas production in the region, depends on whether the direct extraction techniques are viable, USGS researchers said.
