Asked whether EVs in the US have a perception problem, Rawlinson said the problem was "not perception, but reality." "I think many people have driven EVs that frankly suck. I know because I drive all the competition," he said. "I think that the American public has been ill-served by underwhelming EVs," Rawlinson added. Meanwhile, EV sales growth in the US has slowed this year amid a dearth of affordable electric options. According to Kelley Blue Book, the average price of a new electric vehicle in the US in September was $56,000, compared to $48,397 for combustion-engine vehicles. <h2>China races ahead</h2>US automakers are grappling with the challenge posed by Chinese EV companies like BYD and Xiaomi, who have rolled out affordable electric vehicles packed with advanced technology. While these companies are unable to sell their cars in America due to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-criticizes-biden-plan-to-ban-chinese-tech-in-cars-2024-11">cripplingly high tariffs</a>, they are putting Western companies under pressure in China and attracting plaudits in the US, with Ford CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-ceo-driving-xiaomi-su7-electric-vehicles-ev-2024-10">Jim Farley praising Xiaomi's SU7 EV</a>. Rawlinson previously described China's automakers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-chinese-automakers-years-behind-tesla-electric-vehicles-elon-musk-2024-5">as "years behind" the likes of Tesla</a> in terms of core EV technology. Speaking on the Cars and Culture podcast, he said Chinese companies like BYD were ahead of US rivals in battery chemistry and assisted driving technology — but said they benefit from an "uneven playing field" due to government subsidies. "I think the Chinese do have a fundamental advantage because when the government says go, they all go in the same direction instead of arguing with each other," Rawlinson said. With Tesla only producing electric cars, they have plenty of credits to sell to other automakers, Morgan Stanley noted."Tesla recognized zero emission vehicle credit revenue equating to around $2k/unit in the quarter, more than 2x the recent run-rate. We believe as more legacy OEMs pull back on their EV plans, combined with increasingly stringent EPA standards, that Tesla may achieve an even more dominant position in the market for highly lucrative ZEV credits going forward," Jonas said.Ford indicated in its recent quarterly earnings report that it entered into agreements to purchase $3.8 billion worth of regulatory compliance credits in North America and Europe, and General Motors and Stellantis are likely to follow suit, according to the note."We anticipate other car companies such as GM and STLA may be wading more deeply into the ZEV market as buyers in the quarters ahead. We estimates Tesla may account for as much as ½ the credit sales in the market, supporting a 100% margin business for Tesla that may not be anticipated by the investment community at this time," Jonas said.Finally, Jonas highlighted Tesla's energy business as a bright spot that could see significant growth as overall <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-data-centers-us-power-grid-gpu-nvidia-cerebras-amazon-2024-7">energy demand increases because of AI data centers</a> and as the grid gets less reliable due to severe storms."Recent indicators of climate change are bringing even greater attention to Tesla's dominant position in energy storage. Meanwhile, Tesla has continued to grow its fleet of options, while enjoying the benefits of attracting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-electric-car-sales-plateau-early-adopters-competition-2023-8">wealthy early EV adopters</a> who initially dominated the segment.The result today is that EV shoppers simply have more choices. Just in the second quarter, BMW, Cadillac, Honda, and Kia all offered new entries to the market, according to Cox. Many of these models are stealing market share from Tesla simply by existing.Take <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-silverado-equinox-ev-flood-the-zone-competitors-pull-back-2024-5">Chevrolet</a> for example. The bowtie brand is executing its plan to flood the EV market with new releases this year, and it appears to be paying off so far.Cox credits new releases like Chevy's electric Blazer, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-equinox-ev-first-drive-much-needed-electric-crossover-suv-2024-5">Equinox</a>, and Silverado with adding 21,000 EVs to the market and chipping away at Tesla's dominance.<h2 id="34a05545-bab2-4354-a3d7-8a25f3557846">Musk made the right bet on EVs</h2>Even as its market share diminishes and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-sales-miss-ev-slowdown-new-wave-customers-2024-4">sales slow</a>, Tesla remains the most dominant EV company in existence.So far in 2024, Tesla is still the top seller of EVs with 304,451 deliveries through June, according to Cox. There's a seismic gap between Tesla and second-place Ford, which has sold 44,180 EVs so far this year.Overall growth in the EV segment, regardless of Tesla's decline, also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-can-make-cars-cheaper-than-competitors-2024-6">proves Musk right</a> in his bet on electric vehicles more than a decade ago.The EV market is still increasing in volume and share, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/automakers-over-estimated-electric-vehicle-demand-early-adopters-2023-10">just at a slower rate</a> than when the segment first took off in 2020. And Tesla is still in a good position to benefit from that growth."The growth will, at times, be very slow, as all-time horizons in the automobile business are vast, but the long-term trajectory suggests that higher volumes of EVs will continue over time," Valdez-Streaty said.
