Among connectors or plugs, there are two categories: AC and DC, short for alternating or direct current. Type 1 and Type 2 AC plugs are standard on EVs from America and Asia and deliver charge speeds between 7.4 and 43 kilowatts, depending on the charger you're plugged into. At these speeds, a full charge would typically take several hours. For a faster charge, you'll want to look for DC plugs. Of those, there are two standard types, plus Tesla's. One type of DC is essentially an enhanced type of AC charger with two additional prongs to support faster charging. The other type, CHAdeMO, has fewer prongs, provides a faster charge, and supports bidirectional charging.Once you have identified your plug type, there are three different types of chargers providing various levels of speed.<h2>Level 1 </h2>Most electric vehicles are sold with a Level 1 charger equipped. It can look similar to an outdoor extension cord in size and length.While this is likely the most convenient charging option for a new EV buyer – it's compatible with a standard 120-Volt wall outlet – this is the slowest way to charge. It's best when your car will be plugged in for a long period, like overnight or during the weekend.<h2>Level 2 </h2>A Level 2 charger can often be found in public areas, like parking garages, restaurants, and grocery store parking lots. These slightly faster chargers – averaging about 25 miles of range per hour – can also be installed in your home. Level 2 chargers can be either hardwired or plugged into an existing 240-volt outlet, the same type of outlet used to plug in your home dryer. These are great for overnight charging, as they can usually deliver a full charge in 8 to 10 hours.<h2>DC Fast Charger</h2>These are the best chargers for long trips, as they can provide the most juice in the shortest amount of time.Depending on the size of your battery, a DC fast charger can replenish an empty battery to about 80% in a half hour. Tesla's Superchargers, which only work on Tesla vehicles because of the proprietary connector, are DC fast chargers. But non-Teslas can also plug into a DC fast charger that is not owned by Tesla.<h2>How to find public charging stations</h2>Many EVs now have software built in that can help you locate the nearest charger, and apps like <a href="https://www.plugshare.com/">Plugshare</a> and <a href="https://chargehub.com/en/">ChargeHub</a> are helpful tools for finding the closest compatible charger in a pinch. Tesla is the only EV maker with a dedicated charging network, which has been a big draw for buyers. Other car companies have relied more on partnerships to build out charging infrastructure, which has made the proliferation of much-needed plugs for non-Tesla drivers a much slower process.General Motors, for example, is just getting started on its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-tesla-charging-network-expanding-ultium-charge-360-dealers-locations-2022-12">Ultium Charge 360</a> charging network in North America – a joint effort with its dealer network and charging startup FLO.

It effectively doubles the number of chargers GM drivers have access to, CEO Mary Barra said. It's part of a growing cooperation between Elon Musk and legacy automakers that will help bring them all to "equal footing" when it comes to charging, easily one of the biggest hurdles to mass EV adoption in the United States. Having most, if not all, automakers on one charging standard — with a universal connector — could be huge for driving sales. "Consumers won't have to worry about what plug, what socket, which charging station," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said. "This is a huge advancement for electric vehicles in North America." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-to-bring-supercharger-network-to-rival-ford-musk-says-2023-5">Tesla announced a similar partnership with Ford in May.</a> Tesla has also opened parts of its European charging network to other cars. It means non-Teslas have had to park awkwardly to plug in. Or worse yet, park in the wrong spot, blocking off two charging stalls instead of one. In March, Tesla opened a handful of its roughly 1,700 US charging stations to non-Tesla vehicles. Superchargers themselves — and the surrounding parking spots — are designed to accommodate Teslas only. That poses a problem when other electric cars, which may have their charging ports elsewhere, try to charge up. For example, when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtuber-mkbhd-charging-rivian-tesla-supercharger-chaos-2023-3">tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee</a> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-oaVLRH-js">took his Rivian truck to a Tesla station</a> in New York, he had to park in the wrong spot — effectively blocking another charging stall — in order to plug in. The same happened when Electrek, an electric-car blog, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSscxmAmKHU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brought a Chevrolet Bolt</a> to a Supercharger. In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KN9D06LIAo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent YouTube video</a>, Dave Conner, of the automotive channel Out of Spec Reviews, charged a Genesis GV60 electric SUV at a Tesla station while taking up two spots. He noted that the situation could pose problems, particularly during times when chargers are in high demand. "People are going to start to get upset here with the fact that Tesla has delivered this Magic Dock station capability, but they haven't thought through the logistics as far as how people are going to charge," Conner said. In <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKRI7pnRA0k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a video on his State of Charge YouTube channel</a>, Tom Moloughney could barely get Tesla's cable to reach the charging port of his Ford F-150 Lightning, but succeeded (while blocking an extra space) after repositioning his vehicle extremely close to a bollard in front of the parking space. He spoke with a Lucid Air owner at the same location who said he would have had to "crash my bumper into the charging station" to top up at one of the standard stalls, so he chose the lone Supercharger off to the side that was positioned differently. Tesla owners sometimes experience <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/580338/is-this-future-waiting-charge-tesla-supercharger-station/">long lines at charging stations</a>, particularly during popular travel times. Ford, Chevy, and Hyundai owners clogging up Superchargers could frustrate Tesla owners further if the company fails to roll out a fix before deploying Magic Docks to more locations. The simplest solution, it seems, would be to add longer cables that can reach the charging ports on more vehicles. Tesla's chargers being open to anyone is set to be a boon for EV owners who currently rely on an inconsistent patchwork of charging providers. But everybody else has to endure the cumbersome process of fumbling through an app, signing up for a membership, or tapping a worn-out touchscreen before unleashing the flow of fuel. Riveting as it may sound, this is not the premise of the next dystopian blockbuster starring Timothée Chalamet (although Mad Max: Gas Wars does have a nice ring to it). Superchargers are plentiful, simple to find, straightforward to operate, and may be the best reason to choose a Tesla over a competitor. <h2>Finding a station</h2>EV owners mostly charge at home in their garages, but every so often one needs to plug in during a longer trip or while out and about. That's where Superchargers and other DC fast-charging stations come in. Tesla has been building out its Supercharger network since 2012 and has <a href="https://www.tesla.com/findus?v=2&amp;bounds=53.59355137652508%2C-66.94258245910325%2C27.91832476113%2C-130.22383245910325&amp;zoom=5&amp;filters=store%2Cservice%2Csupercharger%2Cdestination%20charger%2Cbodyshop%2Cparty">some 1,500 stations in the US</a>, more than any other charging company. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-stations-near-me-electric-car-charger-map-apps-2021-9">Finding Superchargers</a> in a Tesla takes just a few taps of its iPad-like screen. When the time came to charge the Model Y I was testing, I clicked a lightning-bolt icon on the map to browse nearby chargers, filtered for the most powerful plugs, and navigated to one that had stalls available. <div type="image" title="The Tesla Model Y electric SUV." height="1667" width="2500" msid="94209242" hostid="261" sizebytes="97744"></div>Other electric cars have similar features, but their interfaces aren't nearly as user-friendly as Tesla's. And around 20 minutes away from the station, the SUV started getting its battery pack to the optimal temperature for fast charging, which not all EVs do.<h2>The charging experience</h2>After pulling up to an open Supercharger stall in the back of a gas station, I grabbed a charging cord from its dock, noting how much lighter and sleeker it was than the ones I'm accustomed to. (Tesla has a proprietary connector that's more compact than the standard.)I held it near the back left corner of the Model Y, clicked a button on top of the handle, and a flap popped open revealing the car's charging port. Afterward, Tesla billed the credit card on file. Things are not always this quick and easy.In the past, I've had to activate charging in an app, swipe my credit card multiple times, or unplug a car and start all over again because of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-charging-reliability-broken-stations-ev-2022-5">some glitch</a>. The experience isn't always bad, and sometimes everything works. They're afraid of running out of juice and are concerned about the lack of charging locations in the US as compared to gas stations. However, there are ways to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buying-tesla-price-model-options-tax-credit-2018-4">charge your Tesla</a> without stopping to charge — some more realistic than others. <h2>Can I charge my Tesla while driving?</h2>It is possible to charge a Tesla while driving, kind of. One YouTuber's experiment involved a gas generator to power his Tesla Model S during an 1,800-mile road trip through the Midwest without stopping to plug in. (He did have to stop for gas, ironically). But it wasn't the magical solution to range anxiety and lengthy charges. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-402-mile-range-upgrade-the-best-2020-6">Tesla Model S</a>, which has an EPA range rating of 405 miles, sucked more energy than the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-gas-generator-charging-warped-perception-road-trip-2022-10">gas generator</a> could produce, Insider's Tim Levin reported. Matt Mikka, who published the multi-year experiment on his channel, Warped Perception, said he had to park for up to six hours per day while the car charged — and even once got pulled over for driving too slowly on the highway as he tried to keep energy consumption low. <iframe width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hHhf223jGIE"></iframe><h2>Can I use electric roads to charge my Tesla?</h2>Luckily, there are some better options in the work to still be gas-free. Electreon, an Israeli startup founded in 2013, is working to build roads that can wirelessly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electreon-wireless-electric-road-that-charges-electric-vehicles-2020-6">charge moving electric vehicles</a>, a technology that could theoretically eliminate the need for lengthy pit stops or plugging in.In a demonstration of the technology's potential, the startup drove an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-ev-drives-1200-miles-range-wireless-charging-roads-electreon-2023-6">electric Toyota Rav4 Prime</a> — a plug-in hybrid vehicle — for 1,207 miles on a test track without stopping. That's about five times farther than a normal EV can travel on a full charge. In 2022, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/public-road-detroit-to-charge-electric-cars-as-they-drive-2022-2">Electreon</a> announced plans to build a mile-long stretch of road embedded with its technology in Detroit that will be able to charge cars as they drive, so long as they install a special receiver. It's expected to be functional sometime in 2023. <h2>Can I charge my Tesla with solar panels?</h2>While a few startups and automakers have toyed with the idea of installing solar panels on a car to charge while driving, it's likely to be a while before they could generate enough power to run the car on their own. Hyundai's Sonata Hybrid experiment in 2019, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/05/hyundai-launches-car-with-a-roof-based-solar-charging-system.html">for example</a>, could add about 1,300 kilometers per year to the car's range, the company estimated. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aptera-electric-vehicle-launch-edition-solar-panel-car-2023-1">Aptera</a>, a startup, in 2023 said it was working on a futuristic car with a 400-mile range that could travel 40 miles on built-in solar panels.More realistically, it's possible to charge your Tesla using solar panels on your roof — a product Tesla also sells. The product line has been growing in importance to the company's bottom line each year, and in 2022 Tesla reported installation of 348 megawatts of solar capacity. Tesla also sells inverters and energy storage so that your home can be powered — and your car charged — regardless of the weather. Musk has long said Tesla's goal is to support a clean-energy future on all fronts, not just transportation. <h2>Can I swap my Tesla battery?</h2>A handful of companies are working on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-battery-swapping-could-charge-electric-vehicle-faster-than-gas-2023-5">battery-swapping technology</a> that could make getting a fully charged battery as fast as getting gas, but it's yet to catch on in the US as much as it has elsewhere. Tesla does not offer battery swapping as a service, and its cars appear to need battery replacements less often than some other electric cars.<h2>Do Tesla cars come with a power cord?</h2>Tesla no longer includes charging cables with cars because, <a href="https://electrek.co/2022/04/16/tesla-goes-full-apple-stops-delivering-cars-with-included-charging-cable-now-sold-separately/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Musk, they're rarely used. The company sells a home charger that, depending on your home's wiring, could add up to 44 miles per hour of charge. With a regular outlet, you should expect only about 10 per hour, but you can also get an electrician to install a more powerful <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-set-up-home-charging-electric-car-ev-2023-1">electric car charging plug</a>. Tesla also <a href="https://www.tesla.com/support/home-charging-installation/mobile-connector" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sells</a> a mobile connector for charging on the go that comes with an adapter to fit standard household plugs wherever you are.

Electric two-wheeler manufacturer <keyword id="143042" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="okinawa" source="Orion">Okinawa</keyword> had recalled 3,215 units of its 'Praise Pro' scooters on April 16, just before the dealership was engulfed in flames in Tamil Nadu The EV maker was yet to make a statement on the latest EV fire at its dealership. No casualties were reported and the fire was put out with the help of locals but the entire showroom was gutted. This was the sixth EV fire incident since the onset of summer this year. While recalling 'Praise Pro' e-scooters, Okinawa Autotech had said that this voluntary campaign is "in the wake of the recent thermal incident and in line with the company's long-standing commitment to customer safety". According to the company, the recall has been initiated to fix "any issue" related to batteries. "The batteries will be checked for loose connectors or any damage and be repaired free of charge at any of the Okinawa authorised dealerships pan India," the company said. On March 26, a father-daughter duo died due to a blast in the battery of their <keyword id="6080167" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="okinawa-scooter" source="Orion">Okinawa scooter</keyword> which was being charged at their home. Late last month, a blue-coloured Ola S1 Pro e-scooter that was parked on the side of the road in Pune caught fire. The scooter burst into flames which soon engulfed the entire vehicle. As more and more electric two-wheelers catch fire in the country, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant last week asked EV original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to voluntarily recall batches involved in the EV fire incidents. Several electric two-wheelers belonging to Jitendra Electric Vehicles caught fire in Nashik on April 9. The global smartphone applications processor (AP) market grew 26 per cent to reach $8.9 billion in the second quarter (Q2) this year. According to Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm maintained its lead in the <keyword id="10966499" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-AP-market" source="Orion">smartphone AP market</keyword> with a 40 per cent revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 26 per cent and Apple with 25.5 per cent. 5G-attached AP shipments accounted for 55 per cent of total smartphone APs shipped in Q2 2022. TSMC manufactured over 80 per cent of smartphone APs shipped in Q2 2022. Samsung Foundry's key customer Qualcomm shifted orders to TSMC in the recent quarters. "Qualcomm's smartphone apps processor (AP) revenue grew 41 per cent despite a 23 per cent shipment decline. Qualcomm's momentum in premium-tier Android APs helped," said Sravan Kundojjala, Director of Handset Component Technologies service at Strategy Analytics. The Samsung Galaxy S22 design win fueled Qualcomm's AP average selling prices (ASPs) to an all-time high. "Despite traction in the premium tier, Qualcomm will likely face inventory correction headwinds in 2H 2022. Samsung LSI' Exynos smartphone AP shipments declined 46 percent year-on-year but showed signs of recovery with traction in mid-range," said Kundojjala. MediaTek posted its all-time high quarterly AP revenue in Q2 2022, driven by a high mix of high-end and premium tier Dimensity 5G APs. The company, however, will see a decline in its AP shipments and revenues in the second half of 2022 "due to continued Android weakness in China". Unisoc, on the other hand, posted a 26 per cent shipment growth in Q2 2022, thanks to continued traction in tier-one 4G smartphones," Kundojjala said. Tesla's website lists the new wall connector for $415, and says that Tesla owners will need an adapter to use it.Until now Tesla chargers were bespoke to Tesla cars. "This move directly supports our mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy."Tesla said non-Tesla drivers would be subject to additional charging costs to "support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles." To use the charging posts, non-Tesla drivers will have to download the Tesla app, the company said.Musk said in July that Tesla would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-will-let-other-cars-use-supercharger-network-2021-7">allow other electric vehicles to use its Superchargers</a> by the end of 2021. DC fast chargers provide the quickest charging experience and are capable of replenishing an electric car's battery in roughly 20 minutes to an hour. If you aren't plugging in at home overnight or at work throughout the day, you'll probably frequent these kinds of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-expand-access-ev-charging-rural-america-2022-3">stations</a>. The Leaf can use DC fast chargers, but only with an aging type of connector called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHAdeMO">CHAdeMO</a>, which is harder to come by at public stations than the newer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_Charging_System">CCS</a> plug. But hatchbacks like the Leaf can be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-3-turbo-hatchback-review-crossover-suvs-2022-3">just as practical as SUVs</a>. The Leaf's cabin feels nice and spacious, and there's plenty of headroom for rear passengers thanks to the hatchback's tall, horizontal roofline. The Leaf affords 23.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seats, more than the Tesla Model 3, Chevrolet Bolt, or Hyundai Kona Electric. Among other things, he said a company's relying on patents for revenue is a sign of weakness, and he slammed the state of patent controls in America.
Hidden among the patents announcement was Musk's comments on automakers' use of fuel cells, which use the reaction from combining hydrogen with oxygen to generate electricity.
"I don't think fuel cells are a viable path," he said. "Even the best theoretical fuel cell doesn't compete with batteries. It doesn't seem like the right move."
This is a weighty statement to make. Confronted with rising costs and flagging sales, major automakers have been ramping up fuel cell production while winding down their battery-powered vehicles. Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne recently <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/21/chrsyelr-ceo-evs-idUSL1N0O71MS20140521">implored</a> an audience not to buy any more of the firm's battery-powered 500e car because the company loses too much money on them. Hyundai <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-10/hyundai-positions-hydrogen-suv-as-alternative-electric-vehicle.html">is expanding</a> its fuel-cell fleet. And Toyota just rolled up its contract for Tesla components. 
"Personally, I don't care what Elon, [Renault-Nissan CEO] Carlos [Ghosn], or [Volkswagen CEO] Jonathan [Browning] say about fuel cells," Toyota SVP Bob Carter <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/toyota-accuses-teslas-musk-of-fuel-cell-myopia-15313296/">reportedly said at the Automotive News World Congress in January</a>. "If they want to 'plug in and tune out' other technologies, that's fine." 
Indeed, on paper at least, Tesla is not the only EV holdout. Volkswagen <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-vw-e-golf-20140530-story.html">plans to roll out an eGolf in the U.S. this fall</a>. And Nissan <a href="http://www.hybridcars.com/nissans-e-nv200-ev-being-tested-in-portland/">is now testing</a> its first commercial electric vehicle in Portland.
Meanwhile, Musk said Tesla had met with BMW about collaborating on EVs. BMW <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/13/bmw-tesla-motors-idUSL5N0OU1QL20140613">confirmed</a> the meeting but declined to talk about what was discussed. BMW's i3 is, in principle, a rival to Tesla's Model S.
But both are considered luxury vehicles. And Musk's goal is to make all EVs, not simply Tesla's, cost competitive with regular gas guzzlers. With the patents announcement, he has now acted on his frustration that the market for them has not grown fast enough.
"He'd love to be the Microsoft Windows of a fast charging network," MLV &amp; Co.'s Carter Driscoll told BI. 
As Reuters' Ed Taylor <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/13/bmw-tesla-motors-idUSL5N0OU1QL20140613">points out</a>, many major automakers long ago agreed on making a standardized EV connector on their cars. But the rollout of charging station networks has stalled. Tesla's connector does not conform to the Big 3 standard (although it's possible to buy an adapter), but its station network is now more robust. Taylor speculates that Tesla likely talked with BMW about nudging, for starters, Germany's EV market closer to Tesla technology. 
Tesla's main goal is obviously to sell more vehicles. But Musk has stressed the environmental urgency of choosing what he sees as the right technology before its too late. "Given that annual new vehicle production is approaching 100 million per year and the global fleet is approximately 2 billion cars, it is impossible for Tesla to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis," <a href="http://www.teslamotors.com/blog/all-our-patent-are-belong-you">he said in his blog post announcing the move.</a>
The key question is what consumers think. Right now markets for both are so small that it's difficult to find a reasonable gauge of sentiment. A report from Navigant research says that at current rates the two technologies combined will comprise less 2.5% of the market by 2035. 
But the cost of lithium ion batteries is falling, and could fall even faster if and when Tesla's gigafactory, which aims to double the total amount of lithium ion batteries in the world, finally launches.
"With the cost of electrics dropping along with the cost of lithium-ion batteries, fuel-cells have a long road ahead to convince car buyers that the extended range is worth the distended price tag," <a href="http://cars.chicagotribune.com/fuel-efficient/news/chi-hydrogen-or-electric-vehicles">the Chicago Tribune's Robert Duffer wrote recently</a>.
The road may just become even longer.
