For its critics, ESG might as well be a four-letter word.It represents woke capitalism. It propels a for-profit nanny state. Yet for all the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/conservative-politicians-esg-sustainable-investing-2022-6">political haymaking over environmental, social, and governance efforts</a> — such as Republicans throughout the country pushing anti-ESG legislation and threatening to pull state investments from companies that follow ESG principles — few companies seem to be walking away from their efforts entirely.Many appear to be talking less about their ESG initiatives, though. And job cuts could imperil <a target="_blank" href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/corporate-diversity-pledges-fizzle-amid-layoffs-gop-backlash">progress on diversifying workplaces</a> — pledges that some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/layoffs-diversity-departments-some-ceos-talk-committed-racial-justice-2023-2">skeptics saw as performative gestures</a> following the murder of George Floyd in 2020.Despite challenges, much of the work continues because many companies across industries see it as good for business, ESG experts told Business Insider. In particular, they said, it's important for attracting and keeping younger workers."The work is quietly going on," R. Mukund, the CEO of Benchmark Gensuite, which makes software for ESG reporting, told BI.In fashion, Eileen Fisher is pushing the label she started nearly 40 years ago to reduce its environmental impact by using fewer materials. The company takes back old clothes to be upcycled. Fisher has even called for consumers to buy fewer clothes. She told BI she hopes education can help shoppers realize they don't need as many pieces as they might think. Fisher said the company's environmental efforts had helped attract workers.At the financial giant JPMorgan Chase, Vince Toye leads two divisions focused on affordable housing. In 2022, the bank financed $12 billion in deals to make it easier for people to obtain housing. Toye told BI he's also working on efforts to help renters who make too much to get government help but earn too little to afford market-rate rents.The work at Eileen Fisher and JPMorgan indicates ESG work is ongoing even as some businesses talk about it less often than they once did. Companies generally have been <a target="_blank" href="https://insight.factset.com/lowest-number-of-sp-500-companies-citing-esg-on-earnings-calls-since-q2-2020#:~:text=Since%20peaking%20at%20156%20in,Q1%202023%20decreased%20by%2023%25.">quieter about their ESG work</a> on quarterly earnings calls; data compiled by FactSet suggests the chatter about ESG peaked with fourth-quarter results in 2021.Mukund said many organizations have too much invested in their ESG programs and believe they'll help pull in workers and customers."You can't simply wish it away," he said. "No demagoguing is going to make it go away."But, broadly, does anyone care? ESG doesn't necessarily draw widespread attention. In a <a target="_blank" href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/506171/esg-not-making-waves-american-public.aspx">Gallup poll conducted in April</a>, only 37% of Americans reported being "very familiar" or "somewhat familiar" with the practice of using ESG principles to guide purchasing or investing decisions. The share who said the same in 2021 was 36%.Christine Spadafor, a visiting executive at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, said part of the reason ESG work will stick around is that many organizations think it's good for drawing in younger workers, especially Gen Zers.Gen Zers are much more "decisive and discerning" than older generations about where they want to work, Spadafor said. "It's not just getting the job, but it's getting the job in the right place where the values of the company are consistent with their values," she added.Spadafor said that according to her research, many Gen Zers are choosing to apply to employers only after digging into an organization's stances on environmental sustainability and social issues. "They will look at the diversity in the workplace, and they will decide to apply accordingly," she said. "This generation is doing it more than previous generations."I know when I was looking for jobs, I wasn't looking for that. I was thinking, here's my skill set, you know, where do I want to work?" she said. "That's not the calculus that the younger job applicants are using."Spadafor said a focus on the social part of ESG can help companies improve their cultures and hang on to these workers during an "ongoing war for talent."Mukund said the low unemployment rate in the US and the pressures from inflation — like higher wages — that make going out to find workers difficult can push companies to look for ways to incorporate ESG ideas and diversify their workforces. He said it's causing leaders to say, "We need to implement these programs not for the sake of delivering a metric but because it's critical to business."At her fashion label, Fisher and her team set a goal of making the company's environmental footprint as small as possible."There was this moment where I realized that I had to actually say, 'We really want to be a 100% sustainable company,'" she said. But because she knew that wasn't possible, she hesitated, even as her staff grew more excited. "They were all saying, 'Let's do it. Let's make it the goal,'" she said. Fisher, 73, said she pushed aside her initial doubts and agreed they had to try.The company has taken steps to simplify its operations and mimic the simple designs of the clothing line Fisher started in 1984. Five years ago the brand was using 1,000 types of fabric; now that's down to 200, Fisher said. They're the ones the designers love, she said, and that are most sustainable.Fisher also wants her customers to buy fewer clothes. It's a view Fisher shares with her company's CEO, Lisa Williams, whom Fisher brought on in 2022 from Patagonia.Fisher acknowledged the position is tough for a leader of a fashion label to maintain. "I look at the sales every week," she said. "I want to know how are these products being received — what are they liking."Fisher said that buying less might mean helping customers understand the dozen foundational pieces of the season or the year and helping them find ways to mix and match garments.The company still has a long way to go, Fisher said, adding that she and her team feel compelled to do what they can. One focus is on moving from organic cotton and wool to versions of those fabrics produced through regenerative agriculture, a set of practices designed to boost soil health.JPMorgan's Toye, who's Black, knows how difficult it can be to obtain adequate housing. He grew up in a small town in Virginia that was essentially segregated. Toye and his six siblings lived in rentals until his mother was able to purchase a house in the "white" part of town.A big part of Toye's work now is focusing on so-called workforce housing. It's aimed at middle-income workers — the teachers, municipal workers, nurses, retail clerks, and others who have essential but not necessarily high-paying jobs. Often it's easier to bankroll market-rate rentals or low-income affordable housing than this middle layer, according to Toye.In 2022, Toye started JPMorgan's first capital-solutions business focused on workforce housing. He said more employers, recognizing the severity of the housing crunch in the US, are looking for ways to help house their workers because insufficient housing — and punishing commutes — can damage morale, hurt productivity, and increase turnover.Companies that opt to pump money into middle-income housing can get a first crack at reserving some of the units for their workers. Employers might also be able to negotiate a master lease for some units and then rent them to their workers, Toye said.For developers, this can help get deals funded and across the finish line. In addition to funding from employers, building a workforce housing unit might require a bank loan, local tax credits, abatements, land grants, and money from the developer. Toye said this is where JPMorgan Chase's connections can come in handy, allowing him to work with professionals across the bank to find a fix."There's no road map, and every deal's different," he said.Companies' ESG efforts might draw less publicity today, though they aren't likely to slow that much, Spadafor said. "It's unfortunate that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-equity-fossil-fuel-divestment-dilemma-blackstone-carlyle-kkr-2023-4">political piece</a> has come into this," she said. Companies that are doing more around climate, for example, aren't likely to stop, Spadafor said. "They've got investors who are now paying more attention," she said. "They've got employees who want it, and they've got other stakeholders."Mukund said companies that have already set up reporting structures to gather information on ESG data are unlikely to stop, especially as some jurisdictions like the European Union will require reporting on some metrics. Already, there's growing interest in the so-called <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.integratedreporting.org/news/the-growing-momentum-for-integrated-reporting-part-1/">"integrated reporting" framework</a>, which pulls together data on a company's strategy, governance, and performance."The grooves are laid," he said. "What you could do is to stop looking at it or hearing about it or doing the things to improve upon your numbers, but the numbers are going to be there."Mukund said that working on ESG measures is in most companies' best interest because many, like his own company, continue to have trouble filling all their open roles. "We all have workforce pressures," he said. "Knowledge workers — they have a lot of choices."

However, a macrotrend listed in the report deserves attention. According to the report, businesses expect that the greatest net job creation impact will come from investments that support the green transformation of businesses, the wider adoption of ESG standards, and the localization of supply chains. While this is a broader trend that will change the future job landscape as much as AI will, now is perhaps the best time ever to build a career in ESG. “ESG as an industry or segment is growing and in India while we are late at it, I think in India the main reason for ESG growth is largely because you now have the government initiatives and the target of being net zero by 2070,” says says Munira Loliwala, business head, TeamLease Digital, a tech staffing solutions firm. Growth in <keyword id="14096025" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="esg-jobs" source="Orion">ESG jobs</keyword> ESG jobs are employment opportunities centered around Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors. These roles involve responsibilities related to sustainable business practices, impact investing, corporate social responsibility, environmental preservation, social justice, diversity and inclusion, ethical governance, and related areas. According to TeamLease Digital, between 2021 and 2022, <keyword id="17432479" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="esg-hiring" source="Orion">ESG hiring</keyword> and new demands grew almost by more than 147%, as compared to 2020-2021, wherein the post Covid year marked almost 85% of growth in hiring by organizations in India. March 2023 saw approximately 19,379 of active job postings for ESG roles, while December 2022, and January 2023 saw the highest number of jobs closed. The average number of ESG jobs posted stood at 12,400 between December 2022, and March 2023, while the average number of closed positions were 14,136. The average number of active ESG related jobs were 24,000. Organizations embracing ESG “ESG plays an important role if India has to attract global investments. ESG increases the chances of investments or chances of the acquisitions that most of the Indian companies today are looking at,” says Loliwala. Both big and small corporations in India have embraced ESG. Reliance Industries, for example, has integrated ESG into their business models. Led by their chief financial officer, their ESG team is a multi-disciplinary group responsible for all of Reliance’s environmental sustainability, stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance activities. In order to enhance their commitment to ESG principles, HDFC Bank has formed an ESG committee. This committee consists of senior members from key departments within the bank and is chaired by a member of the senior management team. The ESG committee is responsible for developing and implementing the bank's ESG strategy, as well as establishing a roadmap to achieve the set targets. Talent in demand ESG jobs do not necessarily require skills in the sustainability domain. “Green jobs or jobs in the ESG space, can be found in a wide range of industries, from renewable energy and clean technology to sustainable agriculture and waste management. There are three categories of green jobs based on their degree of dependence on green skills,” says Manu Saigal, director, general staffing, Adecco India. Jobs that require green skills: These are jobs that cannot be performed without specialized knowledge of environmental sustainability. Examples include renewable energy technicians, environmental engineers, and sustainability consultants. Jobs with significant potential to create and hone green skills: “These are jobs that are not necessarily focused on environmental sustainability but have the potential to develop green skills,” says Saigal. Examples include architects and construction workers who build energy-efficient buildings and farmers who use sustainable agriculture practices. Jobs that do not require green skills: “These are jobs that are not specifically related to environmental sustainability but may contribute to sustainability indirectly,” says Saigal. Examples include accountants who work for green businesses and marketing professionals who promote environmentally friendly products. The crucial aspect of ESG is now focused on proper data analysis, collection, reporting, investigation, and filing. The typical structure involves using various frameworks to collect and analyze data, which requires hiring individuals at entry-level and mid-level positions with backgrounds in computer science, mathematics, or engineering. ESG data is considered a type of alternative data that can be utilized in the analysis of companies. As a result, investors and hedge funds are utilizing it to identify investment opportunities with lower risk by assessing a company's favourable environmental and ethical factors. Organizations are also looking to appoint applicants who have qualifications in energy, social environment, sustainable business management and environmental studies, wind and solar energies. Other companies that produce integrated reports include <a href="https://investors.etsy.com/financials/annual-reports-and-proxy/default.aspx">Etsy</a> and <a href="https://corporate.ford.com/social-impact/sustainability.html">Ford.</a> From Ford's 2022 report: "Last year we were proud to launch our inaugural Integrated Sustainability and Financial Report,building on more than two decades of sustainability reporting at Ford and giving our stakeholders a more holistic view of our performance." Such reporting is not new, but it's also not universally adopted. Advocates of this type of reporting say that it deepens the connection between business strategy and sustainable goals.Global organizations for decades have wrangled with not just what to report on sustainability goals, but how to report. Novartis' decision to combine financial and sustainability reporting into one combined overview is something more companies may choose to do as international bodies adopt these standards. <h2>Measuring impact on community health</h2>Public health and sustainability goals are not new to Novartis, but the global pandemic clearly brought them under a new kind of scrutiny. Lutz Hegemon, group head of corporate affairs and global health, told Insider about how the pandemic had impacted the company's community health goals. "Our priority now, more than ever before, is to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential medicines, including antibiotics, to all those who need them, wherever they may be," he said.Hegemann also said that the pandemic had demonstrated how fragile infrastructures and public health systems fail to reap the benefits of health innovation. "COVID-19 reinforces the need to continue to do more to strengthen healthcare systems across the globe as we implement the Novartis Access Principles across our portfolio," he said.To learn more about the Novartis Access Principles, Insider turned to the company's integrated report. Among national schemes, the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) focuses on clean mobility and is meant to promote the transition to electric vehicles by providing incentives for manufacturing, adoption and development of associated infrastructure for electric vehicles. OPINION: Towards a carbon-neutral India — How central, state governments, and corporations are striving to tackle the planetary crisis

Yet it's the foundation that enables companies to create and execute robust sustainability goals.The World Economic Forum's International Business Council invokes three of the <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals">United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals</a> aligned with the principles of governance:<ul><li>Goal 12: <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal12">Responsible consumption and production</a></li><li>Goal 16: <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal16">Peace, justice, and strong institutions</a></li><li>Goal 17: <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal17">Partnerships for the goals</a></li></ul>Often in response to shareholder and investor pressures, corporate governance sets the standards for transparent reporting, compensation tied to sustainability or diversity metrics, and an aligned and diverse board.Environmental issues and corporate governance often intersect at the top. For example, in June, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/engine-no-1-exxonmobile-invests-etf-stock-fund-interview-activist-2021-6">Engine No. 1, an ESG-activist hedge fund</a>, ousted three high-profile Exxon Mobil board members with the goal of creating <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exxon-retail-etf-esg-engine-no-1-corporate-management-2021-06">a new fund</a> designed to exert ESG pressure on some of America's biggest companies.After an intense shareholder meeting, Engine No. 1 — backed by larger shareholders like BlackRock — <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/engine-no-1-strengthen-their-clutch-on-exxon-mobil-1030489469">claimed three seats</a> on the oil giant's board. Despite holding just 0.02% of the company, Engine No. 1 saw a victory for sustainability and presented a model for the ways that impact investors can change how a $250 billion company votes.Holding the world's most powerful boards accountable contributes to increased ESG considerations across corporate culture and in the stock market, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/boris-khentov-11977436/">Boris Khentov</a>, a senior vice president of operations and sustainable investing at <a href="https://www.betterment.com/">Betterment</a>, said."It's evident that robust corporate governance and a central role for boards are critical for getting on the front foot with ESG and achieving the strategy shift and cultural mindset change needed to drive a sustainability transformation," Julie Linn Teigland, EY's Europe, Middle East, India, and Africa area managing partner, told Insider.<h2>The role of the board</h2>In EY's <a href="https://www.ey.com/en_gl/attractiveness/22/how-can-boards-strengthen-governance-to-accelerate-their-esg-journeys">annual survey</a> on long-term value and corporate governance, which sampled 200 C-suite and board members across Europe, 49% of leaders said their boards discussed ESG strategy and reporting at every meeting, versus just 15% who said the same in 2020.Additionally, 43% of respondents said their biggest challenge in establishing strong ESG targets was a lack of commitment from the board to make decisions that fully integrate ESG factors and create long-term value.In the <a href="https://www.ey.com/en_gl/attractiveness/22/how-can-boards-strengthen-governance-to-accelerate-their-esg-journeys">survey</a>, 84% of respondents said the pandemic increased stakeholders' expectations that their companies would prioritize sustainability goals and action. Without robust governance and a clear standard set from the top, Teigland said, it will be extremely difficult for companies to meet this new standard.Meanwhile, companies are beginning to publish metrics and objectives they're certain about. The <keyword id="6357328" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nasdaq" source="Orion">Nasdaq</keyword>, for instance, released a <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/board-diversity">listing rule</a> to provide a standardized disclosure framework to improve transparency about board diversity.In addition, Teigland said EY used the World Economic Forum's <a href="https://www.ey.com/en_gl/global-review/value-realized-2021">stakeholder-capitalism metrics</a> to integrate ESG performance into its larger business strategy. To create the report, the International Business Council — composed of over 120 global CEOs — intentionally set metrics based on existing standards so companies could measure, track, and compare their sustainable contributions.Creating a set of standards is one way boards can meet ongoing reporting expectations. In fact, 83% of respondents in EY's survey said they would benefit from companies being required to measure their ESG performance against a globally consistent standard.When companies are pressured to respond to short-term demands from the news cycle and trending social issues, it will be governance that actually forces them to meet the long-term goals they set."For executive teams to be proactive and build a strategy that leads to long-term value — while dealing with competing priorities — they need a board that is committed, empowered, and has the operating model, data, and capabilities it needs to provide strong direction, challenge, and support," Teigland said.Additional reporting by Lily Katzman

Principles of governance: How companies — and their boards — hold themselves accountable for their promises

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Americans are caring more and more about <keyword id="12136103" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sustainable-investing" source="Orion">sustainable investing</keyword>.</li><li>A new rule proposed by the Department of Labor hopes to make <keyword id="12011554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="esg" source="Orion">ESG</keyword> funds more available to employees.</li></ul>Nearly half of <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/348227/one-four-americans-say-environmentalists.aspx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Americans call themselves environmentalists</a>, and those that do are often letting that belief system drive their investment strategies. Interest in investing that <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/06/the-evolution-of-esg-investing-heres-whats-next.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">prioritizes environmental, social, or governance (ESG) factors</a> has been growing over the past few years. In early 2020, one of every $3 of the total $51.4 trillion US assets professionally managed were ESG funds, 42% more than two years earlier, according to the <a href="https://www.ussif.org/sribasics" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">US SIF Foundation </a>— and it's <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/09/esg-investing-to-reach-1-trillion-by-2030-head-of-ishares-americas.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">estimated to keep growing</a>. <keyword id="12313304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="esg-investing" source="Orion">ESG investing</keyword>, also known as socially responsible investing or impact investing, takes into account how well a company or an investment performs in certain criteria. For example, environmental factors include a company's efforts to reduce the impact of climate change; social factors include human rights or working conditions throughout a company's supply chain; and governance refers to how diverse a company's leadership is or what political causes it contributes to. But even for the most sustainably-minded investors it's not always possible to direct company-based 401(k) plans to ESG investments — for now, at least. A new Department of Labor proposed rule could change that. Being able to invest a 401(k) into ESGs depends on what a company offers with its retirement plans. "Oftentimes, plan sponsors will offer a diversified array of investment choices for their participants to choose from to build their investment portfolios, and there may be an ESG-themed investment option that's available in that lineup of choices,"<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/liana-magner/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored"> Liana Magner</a>, executive vice president and head of institutional and retirement strategy at <a href="https://www.im.natixis.com/us/home" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Natixis Investment Managers</a>, told Insider.<div type="image" title="Liana Magner" height="1631" width="2174" msid="89023678" hostid="261"></div>401(k) managers are responsible for selecting the investment options that are available under the plan for employees to choose from and monitoring their performance. Magner said that<a href="https://corpgov.law.harvard.edu/2020/11/24/the-department-of-labors-esg-less-final-esg-rule/#:~:text=A%20%E2%80%9Cpecuniary%20factor%E2%80%9D%20is%20defined,investment%20objectives%20and%20funding%20policies." target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored"> Trump administration rules</a> required fiduciaries to make these decisions solely on risk and the return objectives of plan participants, not other factors like ESGs. This has led to some hesitation among 401(k) managers in including ESG-themed investments, Magner added. However, the Biden administration has said it will no longer enforce this rule. In October, the Department of Labor issued a <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/10/14/2021-22263/prudence-and-loyalty-in-selecting-plan-investments-and-exercising-shareholder-rights" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">proposed rule</a> stating that <a href="https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/benefits/pages/dol-proposes-rule-to-remove-barriers-to-esg-funds-in-retirement-plans.aspx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">ESG factors could be considered financially material</a> criteria for 401(k) and other plans. If approved, the rule could give employees broader access to sustainable investing. It's tough to say when the final rule might go into effect, but analysts say it will likely be the first half of 2022. <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaronschumm/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Aaron Schumm</a>, CEO of <a href="https://www.vestwell.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Vestwell</a>, told Insider that he hopes more employers will consider including ESGs among their 401(k) investment options. "As part of the plan design and the offering that's being put forth to the employees, I would hope that's part of a deep discussion around what's important to the employer as well as the employee," he added.<div type="image" title="Aaron Schumm" height="3683" width="4911" msid="89023679" hostid="261"></div>As employees are showing more interest in socially responsible investing, Schumm said he's seen more companies (including his own) start offering ESGs. "That was part of the driver for us — we had a lot of people ask, we had our own employees ask if ESGs could be incorporated," he said. "So we made them available in our own plan." In today's highly competitive labor market, Schumm said employee benefits, including retirement plans with options that suit sustainably-minded employees, will help with recruitment and retention. For employees whose employers don't offer ESGs in their 401(k) plans, Schumm and Magner suggested simply asking for it. "You could always put the request into the HR department to say, 'This is something that's important to me, and is it possible to add a sustainable investment option to the core lineup in our 401(k) plan?'" Magner said. "They could also just do more research on the choices that are available in their plan lineup to see if any of those choices actually integrate ESG into the investment process of their traditional core options."

Why you soon might have more access to sustainable investments within your company 401(k)

<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financing-a-sustainable-future-2022"></a><div type="image" title="A field of organic cilantro" height="1080" width="1920" msid="92046740" hostid="261"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11975833" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="chipotle" source="Orion">Chipotle</keyword> recently increased its executive bonus potential from 10% to 15%, based on how well the company does against its environmental, social, and governance goals.</li><li>The restaurant chain's community initiatives focus primarily on helping farmers transition to <keyword id="6359810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="organic-farming" source="Orion">organic farming</keyword>.</li></ul>When companies set out to help communities prosper, it's essential that their executives are truly on board.Chipotle Mexican Grill ties its executive bonuses to progress toward its environmental, social, and governance (<keyword id="12011554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="esg" source="Orion">ESG</keyword>) targets. The bonus scheme is just part of an overall culture shift that has refocused the company on its commitments to all its stakeholders. In February, the company raised the bonus potential for its leaders from 10% to 15%, based on how well the company meets is goals across a range of categories, including reducing emissions, improving diversity, equity, and inclusion, and increasing the amount of local and organic food it serves in its restaurants. Chipotle is into its second year under this bonus structure, and Marissa Andrada, chief diversity, inclusion, and people officer, said transitioning to it wasn't as hard as one might have expected. "For us, it's this really big commitment to living out our purpose," she said. "It's only natural that we actually put our money where our mouth is and hold ourselves accountable."Andrada credits the culture change that took place after CEO Brian Niccol took over in 2018, following a difficult period for the company where it faced food-safety problems that resulted in sales declines. "We layered in people with integrity [into the company]," she said.<keyword id="11896309" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sustainability" source="Orion">Sustainability</keyword> goals are interlinked. In order for sustainability initiatives to be effective, they have to reflect the company's own culture. If a company lacks diversity, its opportunities to innovate and drive sustainability can be more limited. Diversifying the company's leadership ranks was one of Niccol's early goals."Our old leadership wasn't very diverse," said Andrada. "We made the decision to do a hard reset." Chipotle moved its headquarters from Denver, CO to Newport Beach, California the same year that Niccol joined, in part so that it could attract top talent. Andrada said the company enlisted a network of minority- and female-owned boutique search firms to fill leadership positions and has increased diversity at the leadership levels by 50%. <h2>Focus on the farming community</h2>Supporting farmers is Chipotle's primary community imitative, and its inception actually predates Niccol's tenure. But the programs have accelerated since then, as have the problems that farmers face. "Over the last several years, US <keyword id="11963490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="agriculture" source="Orion">agriculture</keyword> lost 40 times more farmers than it gained, challenging the future of small and mid-sized farms throughout the country," Chris Brandt, Chipotle's chief marketing officer,said. "Chipotle sources more local produce than any other national restaurant brand and our ability to serve real food relies on these local farms."Lena Brook, director of food campaigns for the nonprofit advocacy group <keyword id="14130986" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nrdc" source="Orion">NRDC</keyword> (Natural Resources Defense Council), has been following Chipotle since 2015 when it led the fast-food industry in the use of antibiotic-free beef and chicken."They have been an early adopter for the industry. Now their work on organic farming and their support of farmers is using procurement to positively impact local and regional economies and food systems," Brook said. "Given the state of our world, their procurement practices are also helping with food security."In the sustainability report update, Chipotle said it has so far spent $1.3 million on the next generation of farmers as part of a five-year, $5-million commitment. It increased the total pounds of produce purchased from local farmers by more than 4.7 million pounds between 2020 and 2021.Brandt said the company also partnered with growers "to convert 110 acres of conventional farmland to organic farmland via transitional growing methods in 2021."Chipotle also offers three-year contracts to young farmers, including beef, pork, and dairy. Brook says farms need to be managed organically for that length of time in order for their crops to be certified as organic. "Three-year contracts help mitigate the risk for young farmers looking to transition to organic," she said. "The longer-term contracts take the risk out of farming, and provide that incredibly important stability to keep them farming."Julia Hood contributed reporting to this story.

Chipotle incentivizes executives to support farmers going organic — and it's upped the stakes

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Integrated reporting is growing more popular as stakeholders look to understand how companies are building sustainable growth. </li><li>BASF produces an integrated report and is involved in the International Integrated Reporting Council. </li></ul>If you want to read about BASF's financial performance in 2022, chances are you will be looking at the global chemical company's <a href="https://report.basf.com/2022/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">integrated report</a> to learn more. According to the <a href="https://www.integratedreporting.org/news/the-growing-momentum-for-integrated-reporting-part-1/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IFRS Foundation</a>, more than 2,500 companies worldwide have adopted integrated reporting.But what exactly is an integrated report?"In simple terms," said Martin Whittaker, CEO of JUST Capital, "an integrated report captures in a single place the full range of factors — strategic, operational, societal, environmental, legal, regulatory, and more — that management believes could affect the competitive and financial success of a company, now and into the future."Whittaker recalls that in the late 1990s, stand-alone, lavishly produced corporate social responsibility or sustainability reports were not uncommon, but were often light on detail."The only numbers in there were the page numbers," he said. "The arc of corporate reporting on sustainability, ESG, purpose, and impact has really changed rapidly and for the better since then."A major shift occurred with the launch of the <a href="https://www.integratedreporting.org/10-years/10-years-summary/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">International Integrated Reporting Council</a> in 2010, and the framework it rolled out in 2013. An integrated report brings with it a higher threshold of measurement and accountability than a standalone sustainability report. An integrated report, as the framework lays out, focuses on material topics that could impact the company's bottom line. "Once you put information out in a way that is not just a voluntary report of all the things you are doing, but is now baked into obligatory financial reporting, it takes on a more serious connotation," Whittaker said. "It requires validation of the information and connection to the [company's] performance."BASF has reported on its sustainability performance since 2003, in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and has been active in the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) since 2014. Luiziana Ribeiro, BASF North America's director of sustainability, answered questions from Insider about why integrated reporting is an important part of the company's sustainability communication. <h3>Integrated reporting takes a lot of effort. Why does BASF do it?</h3>Doing an integrated report does require a lot of work. There are many people involved in putting it together, from across the globe. It provides a detailed overview of our financial objectives to stakeholders, but also how these objectives tie into our priority action areas and, most importantly, how our sustainability efforts are driving our financial performance.The reason we take this approach is because we have a clear corporate purpose — we create chemistry for a sustainable future. Understanding how and why sustainability plays a relevant role in our future is important to share with investors and all of our stakeholders.<div type="image" title="headshot of Luiziana Ribeiro , director of sustainability, BASF" height="2048" width="1363" msid="99970265" hostid="261" sizebytes="166222"></div><h3>One of the headlines from <a href="https://report.basf.com/2022/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BASF's 2022 report</a>, which was published in February 2023, noted that BASF is "pursuing our climate protection targets with investments of up to €4 billion by 2030." What are your targets? </h3>In 2018, BASF set ambitious climate protection goals and we are now striving worldwide to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. We also intend to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 25% by 2030 compared with 2018, while continuing to grow.So the targeted investment figure cited in our 2022 report is the amount of investment that we feel will be needed to achieve our net-zero ambitions, which we will continue to report on.Our integrated report allows us to keep our stakeholders informed on the many steps we are taking to meet our ambitions, while also keeping our employees engaged in seeking out solutions to help us achieve this longer-term goal.<h3>What do stakeholders gain by seeing these sustainability goals bundled with the financial disclosure report?</h3>It ties back to creating a tangible understanding of the main areas that the company will be investing in to achieve our business and climate protection goals. The report combines the major financial and sustainability-related information necessary to comprehensively evaluate the company's performance.At the same time, it reinforces the fact that creating chemistry for a sustainable future requires continual innovation and process improvement across many areas of our business. To share some perspective, we have more than 111,000 employees globally, and 10,000 of these employees are fully focused on research and development. We spend around €2.3 billion annually in R&amp;D activities globally.There's virtually no innovation BASF is pursuing that does not have a huge sustainability component attached to it. Innovation needs to work toward enabling climate protection, building a more circular economy, and making the most efficient use of our limited natural resources. <h3>How does the report help employees connect to the company's mission?</h3>There's no innovation without our employees. They are the ones thinking about, "What is next for the company and our stakeholders, what are the next-generation products and solutions that we need to be developing and bringing to market?"We wouldn't be having this conversation or thinking about our 2050 ambitions without having the dedicated focus of our employees. They are our No. 1 priority. We need to keep them engaged, motivated, and focused on our goals. This is directly linked to our ability to continue innovating and delivering on our commitments to our customers, investors, and society at large. You cannot have one without the other — sustainability and financial success are both equally important and vital to our ability to keep delivering on our targets and commitments.

Integrated reporting is one way BASF connects sustainability to strategy for stakeholders  — including its own employees

Climate change is already manifesting rapidly in the form of droughts, fires, floods, resource scarcity and species loss, among other impacts. In 2020, multiple cities around the world experienced extreme temperatures not seen for years."<div type="image" title="Sophia Mendelsohn, Chief Sustainability Officer and Global Head of ESG, Cognizant" height="2448" width="3264" msid="89976005" hostid="261"></div>This urgent need means that businesses need to shift from an era of sustainability talk to an era of sustainability action. But not just any action: transparent, measurable, and meaningful action. And that requires a conscious and calculated spend on digital tools and technology.Sustainability requires the design and deployment of complex, organization-wide road maps to achieve business objectives and ESG goals.
