Drug maker Cipla Limited on Sunday announced the launch of experimental anti-viral drug remdesivir under its <keyword id="9441113" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brand-name-cipremi">brand name Cipremi</keyword>. Remdesivir is the only US FDA approved Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) treatment for adult and paediatric patients hospitalized with suspected or laboratory confirmed COVID-19 infection. In May, US drug maker Gilead Sciences extended a voluntary non-exclusive license to Cipla to manufacture and market Cipla's generic version of remedisvir called Cipremi. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted Cipla regulatory approval for restricted emergency use in the country as part of the accelerated approval process considering the urgent and unmet medical need, the company said in a statement. As part of a risk management plan, Cipla will provide training on use of the drug, inform patient consent documents, conduct post marketing surveillance as well as conduct a Phase IV <keyword id="122283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinical-trial">clinical trial</keyword> on Indian patients. "Cipla appreciates the strong partnership with Gilead to bring remdesivir to patients in India. We have been deeply invested in exploring all possible avenues to save millions of lives impacted by Covid-19 pandemic, and this launch is a significant milestone in that direction," said Umang Vohra MD and Global CEO, Cipla. According to a preliminary report from the ACTT-1 (Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial 1) study, a randomized clinical trial conducted with remdesivir on 1,063 patients over 60 centres across US, Europe and Asia demonstrated a faster time to clinical recovery in hospitalised patients as compared to placebo. Most of these patients were on oxygen therapy of which some were receiving high flow oxygen or non-invasive ventilation, and some were on a mechanical ventilator. The mortality rates in the study were 7.1 per cent in those given remdesivir and 11.9 per cent in those who were given placebo. In May, Gilead Sciences signed non-exclusive voluntary licensing agreements with six Indian pharmaceutical companies to boost the supply of remdesivir, the experimental antiviral drug that has shown promise in Covid-19 treatment. These companies were -- Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd., <keyword id="9441116" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="zydus-cadila-healthcare-ltd-">Zydus Cadila Healthcare Ltd.</keyword>, Biocon company Syngene, Hetero Labs Ltd.; Jubilant Lifesciences; and Cipla Ltd. Media reports said that Hetero Labs Ltd has also received regulatory approval from DCGI but the drug maker was yet to make it official. Cipla said it will be commercialising remdesivir through its own facilities and partnered sites. The drug will be supplied through government and open market channels, to ensure equitable distribution. Cipla to sell anti-viral drug remdesivir as Cipremi in India

<keyword id="45417" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Power">Adani Power</keyword> on Thursday posted a consolidated net profit of ₹13.13 crore in the March 2021 quarter, mainly on account of higher revenues. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of ₹1,312.86 crore in the quarter ended March 31, 2020, a <keyword id="35140" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword> filing said. Total income of the company rose to ₹6,902.01 crore in the quarter from ₹6,327.57 crore in the same period a year ago. For the entire fiscal year (2020-21), the company's consolidated net profit stood at ₹1,269.98 crore. It had reported a loss of ₹2,274.77 crore in 2019-20. Total income in 2020-21 came in at ₹28,149,68 crore as compared to ₹27,841.81 crore in 2019-20. During fourth quarter of 2020-21, Adani Power, along with the power plants of its subsidiaries achieved an Average Plant Load Factor (PLF or capacity utilisation) of 59.6 pe cent, and aggregate sales volumes of 14.8 Billion Units (BU). In comparison, during the fourth quarter of 2019-20, Adani Power and its subsidiaries achieved an average PLF of 65.5 per cent and sales volume of 16.5 BU. Operating performance was affected due to lower merchant sales and grid backdown in various plants, as well as reserve, shutdown at <keyword id="48302" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Udupi">Udupi</keyword> due to higher penetration of renewables, the company said. Q) We understand you dropped out of college to choose a career path of your choice. Take us back to the beginning of your journey when you sold Pashmina shawls. 
 
I was 17 when my father gave me six months’ ultimatum to either choose a career line or manage the family-run restaurant business in London. Running the restaurant was not something I was keen on doing. So, I backpacked and set off to discover something that I would want to do my entire life, well aware that I will have to return to London and run the restaurant in case nothing worked out in these six months. However, during my visit to Nepal, my eyes were fixated on the colourful Pashmina shawls that were hanging outside several shops in Kathmandu. As I learnt more about it from the shopkeepers, I felt the product was interesting for the cold climate conditions in London. A credit card with 2000 pound limit in it was all I had. I asked the shopkeeper if he had a factory. He said yes. I asked him to give me one piece of every colour assuring him that I’ll soon get him orders. I swiped my credit card and put all the money into these Pashminas, and took these to London with me. As I reached out to several companies to sell the idea, doors were slammed on my face. Nobody wanted to talk to me since I was a single-man army. Soon, a chance meeting with someone at the airport landed me with a whopping 10,000 crore order. There started my journey. Luck was on my side, and there has been no looking back ever since. 
 
Q) Amid your successful businesses is a low point you faced when Justice Lodha Committee pronounced you guilty in the IPL betting controversy in July this year. It brings your crucial IPL business investment to an end. How has that affected you? 
 
It was not an investment for us, but something Shipla and I were passionate about. We had nothing to sell neither any product to advertise, it was just for the love of the game. I don’t agree with the report. First time around, they said Raj is in the clear but we need to investigate a bit more. To my surprise, without showing me any evidence they suddenly called me guilty. This is huge violation of natural justice. All I know is whoever was guilty has been arrested. I was not once arrested or picked up by the cops. Even they agree that there is no evidence against me. It was an unfair trial. I am not guilty. There’s nothing I have done and I clearly mentioned that if an iota of wrongdoing is found on my part, I’ll forfeit my shares. In any case, it was a judgement that we cannot argue about, so we silently walked off. I don’t want to do anything where there is violation of natural justice. 
 
What brings you to the mobile segment now? 
 
After trading Pashmina shawls, I got into buying and selling mobile phones in UK. It led to me learn the business and eventually, I understood that space very well. Today, I look at India as having so much potential with the demands of nearly 500 billion middle class population residing in the country. I would often complain about certain handsets not working in a certain way. Sometimes you just want to pick your phone, hear a human voice and get your work done. The personal touch that is lost in this tech age is something I still like. And so, I thought not everyone likes to use an app to book their tickets and maybe we need someone to go back to the basics. 
 
What’s the USP?

So are others. Don’t you feel that the entering the mobile market is a risky affair with the telecom giants innovating day by day. Soon, Reliance Jio’s Lyf phones which are again affordable phones like yours will hit the market. How do you aim to crush your competition? 
 
I think there is no dearth of demand. Look at the consumption. There are 2 crore handset requirements every month in India and it’s growing at 20-30 per cent every year. It’s a huge consumer market and an average consumer changes his phone twice in a year. With a billion people living in the country, one can imagine the actual consumption. Yes it’s cluttered and you need to create the brand, but it all goes down to service when it comes to a handset. You will provide the same features - camera, memory, speed etc. What different can you do? It is all going to be in the service you offer, the quality of your phone and the affordability factor. 
 
What are you expecting as returns from this new venture in the coming 2-3 years? 
 
We have tied up with a company in Ukraine and we have already launched in 7 CIS countries simultaneously. This one agent in Ukraine is going to look at the CIS turf. His projected business is $80 million a year. If I am taking $80 million internationally and I am doing the same kind of figure in India, you have done a business which is nearly $200 million in the first year itself. Success is assured. 
 
With several start-ups waiting to climb up the ladder of success, what would be your one advice to the newbies? 
 
You have to take risks if you want to run a business. As they say, with no risk comes no gain. However, you can minimize the perceived damage the decision can have of play safe if you take calculated risks. When you put money somewhere, just make sure you are able to see an exit option during unforeseen circumstances.

Raj Kundra- The shrewd
opportunist, with a never-say-die-attitude

For the past four months, <keyword id="157271" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="PVR-Ltd">PVR Ltd</keyword>'s Group President, Pramod Arora, has been clocking up air miles as he travelled the world looking for inspiration. In fact Arora travelled so far and wide that he could be soon be dubbed Ryan Bingham - the character played by <keyword id="11804" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="George-Clooney">George Clooney</keyword> in the film Up in the Air. 
 
Multiplexes are generally not known to be citadels of innovation but in a country where cricket and movies are a religion it is important to keep pioneering to stay relevant. At the heart of this exercise is one of PVR's one of the most ambitious and largest projects till date - the 15 screen 'Superplex' in Noida. 
 
"As plans for the Superplex were drawn, I visited every cinema hall in every part of the world to experience the best practices that we can pick up. At the end I realized cinema industry may not be the correct industry to look at. By looking at the cinema industry we realized that either we were ahead of what others were doing or at par with what they were doing," says Arora. 
 Arora turned elsewhere for insights. "In terms of benchmark we decided to compare ourselves to the hospitality industry and also looked at companies like <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword>. People say there are no similarities between Apple and the cinema industry but there are immense commonalities. 
 
Arora says the trick lies in making sure the consumer is deriving satisfaction from the product you are selling in the minimum possible time and how a company is able to retain the consumer, once he is serviced, for the maximum possible time. "In this minimum and maximum lies your ability to monetize and this is what we are trying to master. For us it was picking up the thread from various industries across the globe," says Arora. 
 
PVR now plans to invest Rs. 250 crore to add 100 new screens this fiscal. It currently has 444 screens in 101 properties spread across 43 cities and targets to touch 1,000 screens by 2017-18. The Superplex is expected to be operational by end of March 2015 and the 15 screen complex would cost the company about Rs. 50 crore to develop. 
 
Inception: 
 According to a <keyword id="50041" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="KPMG">KPMG</keyword> report Multiplexes, as of today, account for approximately 25 percent of the total number of screens in the country with a low screen density of 8 screens per million in comparison with 117 per million in the US. "Given the low screen penetration, India has the potential to significantly increase the number of existing multiplex screens in the country over the next decade without causing an oversupply of screens," says the KPMG report. 
 
In 2013, the industry added approximately 150-200 screens, with major growth coming from expansion of multiplexes in tier II and III cities. Occupancy levels for major multiplexes players have risen from approximately 23-27 percent in 2011 to more than 30 per cent in 2013. 
 
"In India movie watching theoretically begins from the age of 5. If we look at cinema halls we will see that we do not provide anything for five year olds except sit on their mother's lap and cry or disturb others around them. We have realized that the categories of ages 5-9 need to be addressed," says Arora. 
 Arora says PVR Superplex will have a special auditorium designed called the 'PVR Playhouse'- an exclusive fun and <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> destination for children. PVR Playhouse will witness a space exclusively for kids to be at their natural best. The auditorium will have half dim light - brighter lighting than other formats, cartoon characters both on and off screen and special seating facilities like bean bags to create a comfortable environment. "For younger kids, PVR will provide visual attractions like play seats, playful interiors and the middle alley will resemble a slope just like a slide for kids to enjoy. Keeping in mind the safety of kids, the flooring will have a rubberized surface for an easy topple," says Arora. 
 
PVR will also operate on the opposite end of the age spectrum as the new multiplex would also have a different screen for senior citizens.

PVR is well aware that technology changes fast and multiplexes in days to come may not be the preferred medium for cinema as home theater screens are becoming better and bigger. "For example HD has become table stake today and we have understood that if we do not make our medium more immersive, it is not really going to deliver the bang for the buck for the consumer," says Arora. 
 For an immersive movie viewing PVR is addressing the sound and the elctroacoustics in a much more superior way. "<keyword id="16674" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="George-Lucas">George Lucas</keyword> has done this in the US for time immemorial but why people have not taken it up is because it is expensive," says Arora. 
 
He adds that PVR took two years to re-engineer the technology at a fraction of a cost. "For example if it rains in the movie, you currently hear it from the surround system or from the speakers behind the screen. For you to be able to feel rain the sound must come from the top and when it falls to the ground, the sound must come from the bottom. From an engineering perspective, it is a very big problem but we have worked on it and managed to reduce the cost associated with it," says Rao. 
 
With respect to screens the ones in cinemas today is flat. PVRs new screen would be curved or concave, which would provide a more immersive and greater viewing area. PVR says there is a perceptible difference in viewing. "These Silver screens are more expensive to the tune of about 200 percent but since it lasts for about 20 years so it's worth it," says Arora. 
 
Five formats and a playhouse: 
 
This will be the first time PVR brings all its brands under one roof. PVR currently runs five brands ranging from IMAX, ECX (enhanced cinema experience), PVR Premier, Directors Cut, PVR 4DX in India and with the addition of PVR Playhouse will operate six formats, all under one roof. "PVR stands as a strong mother brand and we were looking to introduce the other brands of cinemas. IMax is one of them and then we go on incorporating multiple other brand that PVR straddles under one roof. This way failure of one brand will never be able to define or shape the final outcome of the mother brand," says Arora. 
 According to Emkay Global Financial Services research report, PVR enjoys a <keyword id="34527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="market-share">market share</keyword> of 20-22 percent and 30-35 percent of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> and Hollywood box-office film revenues, respectively. This provides better negotiating power for content sharing with distributors/producers. Its right location strategy and aggressive expansion plans would continue to drive footfalls and revenues, going forward. Emkay also sees robust growth in F&amp;B and advertisement, which would help drive revenue/EBITDA at a <keyword id="107168" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="CAGR">CAGR</keyword> of 17 percent/23 percent over FY14-16 (estimate), resulting in healthy cash generation. 
 
Chocolat: 
 
As discretionary spends on eating out is on a rise, if cinemas go on serving the consumer with Soda and popcorn, it is not going to take them far. "The consumer is ready to pay money but they need quality and service. In a cinema environment it is challenging to provide gourmet chef driven menu but we have decided to push ahead. We have decided to come up with a menu that change with the season and that is being mastered now and by the time the complex is open, he would be ready to cater to all," says Arora. 
 
A multiplex has limited retail space to display food items so PVR will push information on food on cinema goers' mobile phones and through specialized tablets. "We will have a large base kitchen in the multiplex and once you order your food through the PVR app or through the tablets we will have in the multiplex, fresh food will be delivered to your seats. Different strokes for different folks as senior citizens will get large plasma screens to make their food choice," says Arora. KPMG says currently, an exhibitor's revenue comprises of 70 percent of ticket sales, 20 percent of food and beverages and 10 percent of cinema advertising.

Major corporate houses have multiple Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems running but when it comes to engagement most companies in India have been going wrong. "Forget about going into predictive intelligence, many have not even been able to identify the sex of the individual whose mobile number they have in their database," says Arora. 
 
The mobile app of PVR, developed in-house, now uses predictive intelligence where it knows what you have been watching, what you like, what you did not and a plethora of data around an individual's movie watching habits. "We envisage a situation where you are a part of a community that wants to watch a movie like Mughal-e-Azam, which is not running in the cinemas; you should be able to book a cinema for that movie if say 60 such individuals decide to watch it on a particular date and time," says Arora.

HPCL will supply natural gas to ONGC Petro additions Ltd's petrochemical complex at Dahej in Gujarat. OPaL, a joint venture of ONGC, GAIL and GSPC, requires natural gas for operating its own captive power plant for supporting its power and steam requirements. In a stock filing, HPCL said it has won the contract through competitive bidding against a tender floated by OPaL. "HPCL will be supplying 13.53 Trillion Btu of Natural Gas to OPaL during the period October 23 to May 26 under this contract," the filing said. HPCL has ambitions in the natural gas business and is focused to build a strong foothold in the petrochemical and fertilizer sectors. Further, HPCL informed stock it has entered into an agreement with Automin Car Services Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Petromin Corporation, Saudi Arabia to establish co-branded HP-Petromin Express vehicle service centres across India. Petromin is a leading mobility solutions player in automotive technology with more than 700 multi-brand quick-service outlets across the GCC region. "This strategic partnership aims to provide world-class customer experiences at affordable prices and offer a comprehensive range of solutions under one roof, including lube change, light repairs, periodic maintenance, battery replacements, tire services, air conditioning repairs and eco carwash facilities," it added. The Altroz iCNG comes in six variants priced between Rs 7.55 lakh and Rs 10.55 lakh (all prices ex-showroom all-India), Tata Motors said in a statement. It is equipped with a twin-cylinder CNG technology and comes with advanced features such as voice-assisted electric sunroof, wireless charger and air purifier, among others. The twin CNG cylinders are located below the luggage area with valves and pipes protected under the load floor thereby minimising the risk of potential damage, the company added. Tata Motors launches CNG version of Altroz; price starts at ₹7.55 lakh

New Delhi, Feb 4 () State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) on Tuesday said it has acquired a minority stake in Israeli battery developer Phinergy Ltd for developing ultra lightweight metal-air batteries that can be used in electric vehicles (EVs).
 "To start with, IOC has taken a minority equity stake in Phinergy," the company said in a statement, without giving details about the size of interest or the acquisition cost.
 Founded in 2008, Phinergy develops an assortment of zero-emission batteries including aluminum-air and zinc-air batteries designed to offer power sources for electric cars.
 IOC and Phinergy will form a joint venture in India to collaborate in developing aluminium-air battery system including research &amp; development, customisation, manufacturing, assembly, sell and service of aluminium-air energy systems technology.
 "The joint venture intends to set up a factory in India to manufacture aluminium-air batteries for electric vehicles and stationary applications and facilitate development of eco-system for Al-Air technology," the statement said.
 Phinergy specialises in aluminium-air (Al-Air) and zinc-air battery systems that have great potential applications in electric mobility and stationary applications.
 Aluminium is naturally available in India and its extraction and recycling technologies are also very well established.
 "IOC's collaboration with Phinergy in the field of Al-Air will help in reducing import dependence of the country and isolates the country's energy requirements from global geo-political and currency risks," it said.
 IOC Chairman Sanjiv Singh said the company is evaluating and firming up a number of opportunities to provide Indian automobile consumers feasible and scalable alternative energy options.
 "We are confident that this Al-Air battery technology would complement Lithium-ion batteries to provide a hybrid solution for large-scale adoption of electric vehicles in the country. Al-air battery technology has advantages on a number of factors like range, energy density, safety of operations, life-cycle etc., the India-centric," he said.
 Phinergy is a start-up in clean and high energy-density battery systems based on metal-air technology, which generates electricity using aluminium or zinc as an energy source mainly.
 "Both companies are in discussions with leading auto manufactures for adoption of this technology in 3Ws, cars &amp; buses and they have also shown interest in evaluation and subsequent adoption of this technology," the statement said. ANZ RVK

IOC acquires stake in Israeli battery developer Phinergy

(Eds: Updates with Ayush Ministry statement) Haridwar/New Delhi, Jun 23 () Yoga guru Ramdev's herbal medicine company Patanjali Ayurved on Tuesday claimed to have discovered a medicine that could cure coronavirus in just seven days - a claim that the Ayush Ministry scoffed at by seeking stopping of advertisements for the drug. While Ramdev claimed that Ayurved-based 'Coronil and Swasari' medicine have shown 100 per cent favourable results during clinical trials on COVID-19 infected patients except those on a life support system, the Ayush Ministry sought from the company detailed report on composition, testing and other data of the drugs. The ministry also used powers under a 1954 law to ask the firm to "stop advertising/publicizing" claims of corona cure drug until the issue is examined by it. A government notification bars companies from advertising a cure without government approval. But it wasn't immediately clear if the drug can still be sold. Talking to , Ramdev said the medicines have been developed by Patanjali Research Center, Haridwar and privately-owned National Institute of Medical Science, Jaipur following all protocols with clinically controlled trial-based evidence. "Patanjali first conducted clinical case study and conducted clinical control trials following all protocols of drug discovery," he said. Sidestepping questions on the drug being approved by government agencies such as ICMR, Ramdev said clinical controlled study of these medicines was done in several cities including Delhi, Ahmedabad and Meerut and the RCT (Randomized Clinical Trial) controlled with placebo was conducted at Jaipur-based National Institute of Medical Sciences &amp; Research. "This was done after getting approval from Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI) and all other required formalities," he said. "We have followed all the parameters set up by modern science for such clinical trials." Reacting to the announcement, the Ministry of Ayush issued a statement saying, "Facts of the claim and details of the stated scientific study are not known" to it. "Patanjali Ayurved Ltd has been asked to provide at the earliest details of the name and composition of the medicines being claimed for COVID treatment; site(s)/hospital(s), where the research study was conducted for COVID-19; protocol, sample size, Institutional Ethics Committee clearance, CTRI registration and results data of the study (ies) and stop advertising/publicizing such claims till the issue is duly examined," the ministry statement said. The ministry also asked the concerned State Licensing Authority of Uttarakhand Government to provide copies of license and product approval details of the Ayurvedic medicines being claimed for the treatment of COVID -19. Under the ministry's guidelines for drug development of ayurvedic formulations, state licensing authority grants licenses for manufacturing any Ayurvedic, Siddha or Unani medicine. Ramdev at a launch press conference in Haridwar, where his company is based, claimed that his ayurvedic drugs have shown 100 per cent favourable results during the clinical trial. "We conducted a clinical case study and clinical controlled trial, and found 69 per cent patients recovered in 3 days and 100 patients recovered in 7 days," he said. According to him, this medicine is useful for prevention from COVID-19 and also for treatment. Claiming that during the trial other complications of patients were also cured and their critical parameters were normalised, he said no infected patient lost his life during the trial. Patanjali, he said, had started to work on corona medicines in December 2019. The Corona kit, priced at Rs 545, would be available pan India within a week. The kit will have medicines for 30 days. Ramdev said the medicines can be ordered online through a mobile app from next Monday. The COVID-19 therapy suggested by Patanjali is applicable for adults ranging between 15-80 years of age whereas children are advised to take half the dosage prescribed for adults. Patanjali's anti-COVID tablet, Divya Coronil Tablet consists of Giloy, Tulsi and Ashwagandha and is prescribed to be taken thrice a day with hot water 30 minutes after breakfast, lunch and dinner. Medical experts, however, were not convinced by the claims. Dr Ravi Shekhar Jha, Head of the department and senior consultant, Pulmonology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, said physiologically it is quite impossible that there is any medicine which can finish the viral load from the body in 5-7 days. "These claims can be very harmful because people, instead of taking actual medical help, may start rushing to these kinds of claims which have no proven clinical trial," he told . Instead of taking actual medical help, opting for a "desi nuskha" kind of a thing is just going to result in loss of precious time in curing the disease, Jha said. Noted city-based lung surgeon Dr Arvind Kumar said only a proper clinical trial can prove the efficacy of the medicine. Haridwar-based Patanjali group has an estimated turnover of around Rs 10,500 crore. It had acquired debt-ridden Ruchi Soya in a corporate insolvency resolution process for around Rs 4,350 crore after competing with Adani Group.
