In an official notice, the EC said it had received complaints about the use of political content of certain cinematic works like ‘PM Narendra Modi’ and ‘Laxmi’s NTR.’ that seek to advance the electoral prospects of a candidate “in the garb of political freedom.” The latter is based on the life of Telugu Desam Party founder and actor N T Rama Rao that was banned from release in Andhra Pradesh, the home state of TDP. The release of such movies would amount to “surrogate publicity” during the period of model code of conduct for political parties. This code is put in place before general elections. India goes to polls on April 11. Additionally, the notice said such works can potentially affect the level playing field and “free and fair elections,” which is against its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/general-elections-2019-model-code-of-conduct-for-political-parties-and-candidates-in-india/articleshow/68358245.cms">model</a> code of conduct. The biopic, PM Narendra Modi, features actor Vivek Oberoi in lead role, and depicts him as a visionary, a patriot, painting his rags-to-fame story, according to its trailer.

India’s election commission halts release of Bollywood biopic of PM Narendra Modi a day before polls

New Delhi, The <keyword id="40807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="election-commission" source="Orion">Election Commission</keyword> (EC) issued a show-cause notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday for his "panauti", "pickpocket" and "loan waiver for the super rich" jibes at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and asked him to respond by Saturday. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had approached the poll panel against the <keyword id="6316776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="former-congress-president" source="Orion">former Congress president</keyword>, saying it was "unbecoming" of a "very senior leader" to use such language. The EC reminded Gandhi that the Model Code of Conduct prohibits leaders from making unverified allegations against political rivals. The Congress leader used those words targeting the prime minister at recent rallies in poll-bound Rajasthan. In its representation to the EC, the BJP had asserted that the allegation of grant of waivers to industrialists of Rs 14,00,000 crore over the last nine years was "not borne out on facts". The EC notice said the expression "panauti" ex-facie falls in the equity of the prohibition of section 123 of the Representation of the People Act, dealing with corrupt practices. Clause 2, sub section (ii) of section 123 states that any person who induces or attempts to induce a candidate or an elector to believe that he, or any person in whom he is interested, will become or will be rendered an object of divine displeasure or spiritual censure, shall be deemed to interfere with the free exercise of the electoral right of such a candidate or elector, the notice reminded Gandhi. The Congress leader had used the "panauti" barb against Modi in a poll speech in Rajasthan as the prime minister had attended the World Cup cricket final that India lost to Australia after 10 consecutive wins in the tournament. A Hindi slang, "panauti" loosely refers to someone who brings bad luck. The former Congress president took the "pickpocket" dig at Modi during a poll speech on Wednesday, alleging that the prime minister diverts people's attention while industrialist Gautam Adani picks their pockets. This is how pickpockets operate, he had alleged. The notice also recalled a general advisory issued by the EC, in which the poll panel had expressed concerns at the "plummeting level of political discourse" during electioneering. The commission also told Gandhi about a Supreme Court observation that if freedom of speech and expression is protected by Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, the right to reputation is also considered to be an inextricable part of the right to life protected by Article 21 and "balancing these two rights is a constitutional necessity". "Accordingly, you are requested to provide your explanation on the allegation made and to show causes as to why action as deemed fit for alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct and relevant penal provisions is not initiated by the commission. "Your reply, if any, be reached by 6.00 pm of November 25. If no reply is received by then, action deemed fit will be taken by the commission," the notice said.

EC issues notice to Rahul Gandhi for 'panauti', pickpocket remarks targeting PM Narendra Modi

The Election Commission today assured that polled electronic voting machines (EVM) are ‘absolutely safe in strongrooms’-- reacting to videos on media and social media which show EVMs being transported in private vehicles. “The visuals seen viral on media do not pertain to any EVMs used during the polls,” said EC in a press statement. These series of videos show these machines being tampered in Bihar, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh (UP). Opposition Unites Leaders of several parties like Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) complained to the EC on these alleged movement of electronic voting machines (EVMs) to replace the polled machines in strongrooms. Chandrababu Naidu who is already doing the rounds and gathering steam against Bharatiya Janata Party, is one of the leaders along with Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury who is mobilizing parties to meet EC. “The EC is yet to come out with a procedure in case there is a mismatch between the VVPAT and the EVM tally. We want that even for a single mismatch in the VVPAT samples picked for counting and EVMs, all VVPATs in that assembly segment must be counted. This is important to maintain integrity of the electoral process,” Yechury said, according to a <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/lok-sabha-elections/oppn-parties-may-meet-ec-to-demand-evm-tracking/story-e6PJ9EOGW99ZuX7GGcvuRM.html">HT report</a>. EC however has been assuring that its procedures are in place. “The aspersions in clips being used in media merely pertain to the storage or movement of Reserve unused EVMs. However, any case of lapse even in handling of reserve EVMs is thoroughly investigated and disciplinary action taken against the officers responsible,” EC assured in a statement. Exit Poll Effect These allegations which came a day after exit polls, and mostly by opposition parties, could cast a shadow of doubt on Lok Sabha election results, which are to be announced on May 23. A poll of polls predicts a comfortable win for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by PM Narendra Modi. An aggregation of the various exit polls says that NDA would win more than 300 seats in the current Lok Sabha Election, leaving no option for many opposition parties to come together and form a front, in case of a fractured mandate. Conspiracy theories hound electronic voting machines two days before India’s election results

As Indian GDP growth slumped to a ten-year low, Modi won the 2014 general election framing his campaign on promises of better governance and economic growth.
Indian stocks have a had a good run up in recent months on expectations that Modi would come to power. India saw $3.5 billion in <a href="http://dipp.nic.in/English/Publications/FDI_Statistics/2014/india_FDI_March2014.pdf">foreign direct investment (FDI)</a> equity flows in March, up 41% from a year ago. His win also prompted many economists to raise their <a href="https://twitter.com/mamtabadkar/status/467343646459985922">growth forecasts</a>.
Once Modi gets his cabinet together, the pressure will be on for him to start delivering on his campaign promises.
CLSA analyst Mahesh Nandurkar identifies the first thing Modi should do.
"Accelerating project approval process will be a low hanging fruit," writes Nandurkar.
India has $150 billion worth of stalled projects in its pipeline as of March 2014. "Assuming even half of them were to get moving, then assuming a 4-5 year average execution period, same can add US$15-20bn to India's GDP," writes Nandurkar. "This will imply a c.75-100bps impact on GDP."
One of the key choke-points has been environmental clearance (EC). The average time takes for EC has climbed from 8 months in 2007, to 30 months now. Meanwhile, the approval rate has fallen from over 400 per quarter in 2007-2008 to 100 per quarter in 2012-2013, even as the flow of proposals has been steady. The government can also work to revive the public-private partnership (PPP) project award program.
"Rationalization of ministries and appointment of the right people (including technocrats) will likely accelerate this process," writes Nandurkar.

There are other key reforms that analysts are expecting as well.
Modi will need to push reforms to drive manufacturing growth, develop infrastructure, reform the tax code through the goods and services tax (GST), drive an agricultural revolution through irrigation like he did in Gujarat, and federal reforms which give greater power to states and demand more accountability from them.
Of course, the 29-party National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of which Modi was just named leader has won 63% of seats in Lok Sabha (or the lower house) of Parliament, but only has 24% of seats in the Rajya Sabha (upper house).
Nandurkar writes that this means that over the next two years passing new bills won't be easy. But that the NDA should get more seats as members of the upper house slowly retire and new ones are elected by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).

 Even as <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=arun+jaitley&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Arun Jaitley</a> assured the opposition that PM Modi would be back soon to speak in the ongoing debate on the notes ban, the opposition continued raising slogans demanding that he be present for the entire debate. 
 
 "The opposition was taken by surprise that the government said the PM would participate and now wants to run away from the debate. It is looking for new excuses to run away," Mr Jaitley alleged, stating that the opposition has "lots more noise and little substance" against the notes ban. 
 As of the moment, the <keyword id="48510" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajya-Sabha">Rajya Sabha</keyword> stands adjourned till tomorrow morning.

Facebook has banned an Indian politician from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party for violating its rules on hate speech

AMETHI: The stage is set for the mother of all battles in Amethi, which is going to the polls on Wednesday. With campaigning for the high-profile contest coming to an end at 5pm on Monday, both the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> and <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> have lined up their arsenal in full force for a fight to finish. While BJP’s charge will be led by its PM candidate <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, Congress will have <keyword id="12587" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Priyanka-Gandhi">Priyanka Gandhi</keyword> leading from the forefront. 
 While Modi is defying tradition to storm into the constituency of his chief rival, Congress insiders say that even party chief <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> might join her razing army on the front on Monday to give the prospects of her son one last push.

“It’s a big battle and neither side wants to yield even an inch,” was the feeling among party workers in both Congress and BJP camps. They admit that the fact that Modi chose to take the battle right into Rahul’s territory shows the intensity of the fight as it is an accepted norm that top leaders do not generally campaign in territories of their main rivals. 
 
With reports trickling in from Amethi — a Gandhi pocket borough since 1967 with only two occasions when the Congress lost it — that the bastion was showing signs of chinks, this could be BJP’s way to prise open the giant door. Modi's rally in Amethi is slated around 3.30 pm, barely making it before the EC code puts a clamp on campaigning. 
 
 
 
Although the Congress camp is trying its best not to send out any signs of distress over the close battle, the valiant attempt that the family has put in this time in the constituency, which has mostly been a walkover in the past, is everybody to see. 
 
Rahul, after spending two days in the constituency, finished it off with two back to back road shows in Jayas and Salon to establish a one last-minute connect with his constituency. He will be in UP on Monday but hold rallies in Phulpur, Allahabad and Gonda for the candidates which are considered to be on stronger wickets. So, it will be left to Priyanka to single-handedly rebut Modi’s attack. An unofficial chief poll manager for both her mother and brother in adjacent constituencies, she will remain in Amethi and handle both the front and back-end of poll preparedness. Incidentally, she will also the chief poll manager for Rahul on the polling day, marshalling booths across the constituency.

After Trump's Twitter ban, critics want other populists like Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro and India's Narendra Modi booted from social media

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif met in Paris on the sidelines of <keyword id="2935842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="COP-21">COP 21</keyword>. 
 
The two premiers shook hands and sat down for a chat. However, there was nothing constructive about the meeting. 
 
But, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the meeting between the two leaders. 
 
"...obviously, if the meeting did take place, we welcome it," Ban's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. 
 
The Indian side describing the encounter as a "brief exchange of courtesies", but Pakistanis terming it as a "good" meeting. 
 
The meeting was the first between the two leaders after July when they had met in the Russian city of Ufa and had agreed that their National Security Advisors would meet. 
 
The two leaders had attended the UN General Assembly session in September but did not meet even though they had stayed in the same hotel.

Husain</keyword>. Just when you open the search engine expecting to see the Doodle on Modi! 

	India is thankful to Google though <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Educate-In-India-Narendra-Modis-new-pet-project/articleshow/47456640.cms">Narendra Modi</a> might not be. Looking beyond the ego-battle, <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> should be thankful that this Art Master was born and turned 100 today. Here’s why a man claiming to be the true Indian has much to thank the self-exiled true Indian for. 
	 
	 

	1. Using some of the painter’s favourite colours, notably pastels of red, yellow ochre, blue, mud brown, <keyword id="419433" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="google-doodle">Google Doodle</keyword> was an abstract geometric illustration with MF Husain’s self portrait holding a brush in the middle. MF Hussain was among those rare artists whose prized collections of life works also include an accurate self-portrait. 

	In Modi’s selfies and publicity, the nation is fed with a hazy picture of the man himself. Thanks to this great prodigy, Modi has the most accurate example of self portrait of a true Indian in the whole world, to refer to.
 

	If only Narendra Modi could paint his true self portrait, it would have been marred with red pastels of Gujarat riots and orange shades of the true Hindu that he is.

	 
	 
	 

	2. Husain was self-exiled at the age of 90 after facing more than a decade of lawsuits and abuses for his paintings. It all started with his abstract depictions of Hindu Goddesses and nudity. Though critics state the main reason of his troubled years as a painter was he depicting Hindu mythology in its bare state being a Muslim. This even led to his being treated as a religious bigot.
 

	In his process of ‘saffronisation’ of the nation, Modi can easily put the Gujarat riots case to the background. After all he is true to his religion, unlike Husain, the Indian.

	 
	 
	 

	3. In his ambitious vision <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Modi-to-call-on-Samsung-LG-to-Make-in-India/articleshow/47262269.cms">‘Make in India’</a>, Modi seems to be confused whether to manufacture in India or to make in India. Yes, there is a difference between the two which is debated on. But much to the credits of MF Husain, Modi has the best solution to look at. The artist created a unique language of expression through his paintings which were a combination of Indian visual idioms and contemporary western forms. His paintings were so successful at the international markets that it led to a seal of approval over making art a stock option. 
 

	Modi needs to acknowledge that we need to embrace western talent while working on Indian potential. Calling to foreign investors and manufacturers to manufacture in India or buying Rafale jets from France should be coupled with steps to make the most of the hidden potential in the hearts of Indian land.

	 
	 
	 

	4. <keyword id="127432" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maqbool-Fida-Husain">Maqbool Fida Husain</keyword> was named the ‘Picasso of India’ not for nothing. His unique abstract paintings based on Indian mythology and Goddesses celebrating womanhood made his style stand out among the masses. His paintings were not a disgrace to Indian culture nor did it represent fanaticism, he showed it as it was. It exposed the dilemmas of the nation through pictorial eclecticism. One might remember his famous impression of <keyword id="6354478" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi">Indira Gandhi</keyword> as Goddess Durga riding a lion during emergency. 

	If only Modi had this courage, instead of calling to people to post pictures of incredible India he would have asked them to post images of the things that is tearing apart its incredibility.
 

	But since Husain was exiled for this very reason, Modi is grateful to have a reason to do elsewise.

	 
	 
	 

	5. Husain’s paintings were banned like the books of <keyword id="25391" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Rushdie">Salman Rushdie</keyword>. So also movies, wearing skirts to school and now meat! Narendra Modi’excuse-it all went against the integrity of the nation and its culture. Hence, after years of being represented to its true form, the nation is happy to pull itself out of the artist’s canvas safely.

Acknowledging the difficulties thrown up by the note ban decision, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Saturday cautioned that the coming days may even be tougher but the situation will gradually move towards normalcy after the 50-day period, according to a news report by the <keyword id="6367495" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PTI">PTI</keyword>. 
 He also slammed the <keyword id="6360456" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="opposition">Opposition</keyword> for disrupting <keyword id="6354721" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="parliament">Parliament</keyword> saying he has been forced to speak out in 'jan sabha' as he was not allowed to do so in <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword>. "I had said from day one that this is not an ordinary decision. It is full of difficulties. 
 
"For 50 days this difficulty will be there. This difficulty will even increase, but after 50 days - I have done my calculation - the situation, in one go, will gradually move towards normalcy,, he said. The prime minister's remarks assume significance in the context of reports of widespread difficulties being faced by people in accessing their money in banks. 
 "Whenever I would get a chance, I will try to represent the voice of 125 crore people in Lok Sabha,” <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> said at a rally here, in a retort to the Opposition leaders including <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> accusing him of running away from speaking on demonetisation in Parliament. 
 
The PM said those criticising him and highlighting people's problems should also inform masses that they need not stand in queues and can use mobile banking. Modi also said that the government is ready for a debate on the issue if the Opposition is willing. 
 
"Opposition is running away from a discussion as they know that their lies will be nailed. They don't have the courage to demand complete roll back of note ban as they know that people are also in favour of demonetisation,” he said.
