The <keyword id="2012900" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gmail-Team">Gmail Team</keyword> has already sent a mass mail (it reached my <keyword id="1281393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="mailbox">mailbox</keyword> in India on January 10), letting people know of the latest change and how it would befit them. On the face of it, the new feature seems a value addition of sorts and more inclusive than before. From now on, you can directly send e-mail messages to <keyword id="2012953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anyone-on-Google">anyone on Google</keyword> Plus even if you don’t have their e-mail IDs and vice versa. Unless, of course, you have adjusted your settings. However, your <keyword id="2012904" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="E-mail-address">e-mail address</keyword> won’t be visible to senders until you mail them back. Similarly, you can’t see their e-mail IDs until they respond. But for all practical purposes, every <keyword id="51500" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gmail">Gmail</keyword> user now faces the risk of a massive <keyword id="2012908" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="E-mail-onslaught">e-mail onslaught</keyword> from a bunch of perfect strangers. 
 You will find this new feature when you start typing in your contact’s name in the ‘To’ field of an <keyword id="2012903" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="E-mail-message">e-mail message</keyword>. Matching contacts will appear at the top of the ‘suggestion’ list and the <keyword id="2012919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-Plus-connections">Google Plus connections</keyword> come below that. According to the <keyword id="354776" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="search-giant">search giant</keyword>, the feature will be fully functional in a few days, but do we really need this new level of integration between <keyword id="699770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-Plus">Google Plus</keyword> and Gmail? 
 The integration of the not-so-social networking service with other popular <keyword id="989743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-products">Google products</keyword> has been a pronounced <keyword id="383688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="business-strategy">business strategy</keyword> for some time now. Gmail saw first <keyword id="2012901" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-Plus-integration">Google Plus integration</keyword> in late 2011 that allowed automatic update of address book with a contact’s most recent information. <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> also added a widget to the Gmail sidebar to display a contact’s most recent <keyword id="2012922" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-Plus-post">Google Plus post</keyword> and allowed you to add them to your <keyword id="2012923" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google-Plus-Circles">Google Plus Circles</keyword>. 
 <keyword id="2012924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pushing-Google-Plus">Pushing Google Plus</keyword> into the mainstream has continued since. But when the <keyword id="2012927" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="YouTube-comment">YouTube comment</keyword> system was integrated with it in November last year, it certainly created a worldwide uproar. The new system requires users to <keyword id="2012929" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Log-in-to-Google-Plus">log in to Google Plus</keyword> for commenting on videos, thus forcing the <keyword id="6355103" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="social">social</keyword> site down the throat of those who would not have it otherwise. <keyword id="693389" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> still maintains it is a goodhearted attempt at cleaning up <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, but the latest move shows that the company would stop at nothing to spearhead its social network – even if it means compromising on <keyword id="1491669" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="User-privacy">user privacy</keyword>. 
 As one can’t ignore the <keyword id="2012952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Privacy-implications">privacy implications</keyword> of the current feature, Google has come up with specific measures that can check the potential deluge of e-mail messages. When it comes to controlling who can contact you, you can choose from ‘Anyone on Google+’, ‘<keyword id="2012954" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Extended-circles">Extended circles</keyword>’, ‘Circles’ and ‘<keyword id="2012956" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="No-one">No one</keyword>’ (in the mail I got, it’s in that order). Going for the last option means one can continue as before. If you choose ‘Circles’ or ‘Extended circles,’ the network broadens considerably. ‘Anyone on Google+’ may not be a palatable option unless you aim to become a <keyword id="6370207" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="lion">LION</keyword> (that’s what they are called on <keyword id="28120" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Linkedin">LinkedIn</keyword>, the acronym stands for <keyword id="2012958" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="LinkedIn-Open-Networker">LinkedIn Open Networker</keyword>) and boast your <keyword id="2012959" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Network-size">network size</keyword>. 
 The new feature will also leverage Gmail’s tabbed interface that splits the inbox into sections such as <keyword id="60906" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Primary">Primary</keyword>, Social, <keyword id="30372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="promotions">Promotions</keyword> and more. Going forward, messages from contacts in your Google Plus Circles will appear under the Primary tab while e-mail from those outside your Circles can be found under Social. But in case you are still using the <keyword id="1659109" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Priority-inbox">Priority Inbox</keyword> interface instead of tabs, the additional load of messages will be extremely troublesome. 
 But at the end of the day, what we fail to understand is why Google has to be this <keyword id="1921615" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="invasive">invasive</keyword> to push just one product. Gmail users may or may not be looking at a huge network or a Web wide party. However, people are certainly not keen to be bombarded with uncalled-for contacts just because the service provider wants to take them to a big, jolly get-together of networkers where millions will mingle and be happy. In fact, it should be totally by choice. LIONS become LIONS by choice and one is free to choose the number of <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> friends without any suggestion of invasion from these immensely popular networks. If Google is in too much of a hurry to dictate terms and amass unwilling followers at the cost of privacy and convenience, it is bound to spoil the party.

But no one seems to love the app more than top Cablevision PR guy Jim Maiella, who just posted a long love letter to <keyword id="1281393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mailbox">Mailbox</keyword> <a href="http://brainmatter.tumblr.com/post/43889051356/of-mail-electronic">on his blog</a>.

People love to hate on e-mail. I find this kind of amazing, given how essential it has become in our lives and how much better it is as a communications tool than anything that came before.
I sent my first e-mail in 1994. Work account, not sure I had ever truly considered the odd @ sign on the keyboard before that. I remember being on the phone with a friend who lived across the country and batting back and forth our own versions of “Mr. Watson, come here” messages with the click of a button, amazed they were actually showing up on the other side. “You know, we can attach documents to these things,” he said at one point, a notion that was beyond my ability to comprehend at the time. How would we do that? Where do the pages go? Won’t they fall off?
And now, it seems universally despised. This advance that replaced the ludicrously inefficient process of picking up the phone and actually demanding to speak with someone, right then, to exchange thoughts or information. This thing that took the last real example of jaw-dropping communications technology, the fax machine, and rendered it completely obsolete. This thing that turned the Postal Service into the Pony Express.
Why is this so? I’m taking a shot here, but let’s start with the sheer volume of messages we receive, and how few we actually care about. Quick scroll through Twitter and you’ll find no shortage of sophisticated and technologically aware people venting and flirting with declaring e-mail bankruptcy - a mass delete that results in a kind of First World nirvana known as in-box zero.
Spam, phishing, chronic “reply all” offenders, there are plenty of systemic downsides to this particular form of interaction, to living at an address with a @ in the middle of it that a whole host of nefarious characters can find, barrage, hack or otherwise abuse.
But, to me, that hardly makes up for the enormity of the advance that e-mail represents as a communications tool. Biz Stone went on Charlie Rose with Ev Williams a couple months ago to talk about their new platform, Medium. But the most interesting and true thing he said had to do with e-mail:
“E-mail is like the most intimate witness to our lives, in some capacity, and yet it hasn’t changed since the days of Hotmail and before. We keep files in there, we share pictures of our kids in there, there are receipts in there. E-mail knows a lot about our lives. I’ve been dying for someone to recreate e-mail and just come at it from a completely different angle. Like, show me all the pictures in my e-mail as a photo album right now. Show me all the Excel spreadsheets. Just present it to me in a different way … it’s ripe for reimagining, and someone will do it.”
Biz is right. Again. Particularly in an age of social media and selective sharing, e-mail is true, e-mail is real, e-mail is us. It’s the most accurate and unfiltered version of ourselves, at least the part that relates to corresponding and sharing with others.
Our first personal e-mail accounts were on AOL, like everyone else. Accessed via dial-up modems on Dell computers. Think about that, our primary link to a Web-enabled world was placed in the hands of AOL, Dell and dial-up modems over telephone lines, and it still felt magical. The first real advance we experienced in electronic communications, after the arrival of “always-on” cable modems around 2000, was getting on Gmail in 2005. A revelation. Essentially unlimited storage, messages didn’t auto-delete after a few days, a truly “searchable” archive, clean and functional design. We loved it, stopped paying AOL and never looked back. We had the best e-mail service in the world, and have enjoyed it for years, without ever spending a dime or clicking on an ad - but that’s probably another post.
And the messages piled up. Hundreds, thousands, we lost count, lost control. The occasional mass delete, clicking boxes on dozens of Google Alerts and e-commerce solicitations that missed the mark. But the database was always there, growing, “managed” in name only, like a garden hose waved vaguely in the direction of a California brush fire. Like walking through life hauling the digital equivalent of Santa’s sleigh behind you.
The second great advance in the relatively short history of e-mail was mobile. Suddenly, we could carry our in-boxes around with us, on our person, liberated from the desktop and able to correspond from anywhere.
The combination of Gmail and mobile leads to the third great advance in our e-mail experience, an iPhone app named Mailbox, specifically designed (for now) to be used with Gmail accounts.
A few weeks ago, the cool kids on Twitter were buzzing about this new application, which was taking reservations for accounts. I threw my name on the list, about 100,000 people ahead of me. Waited my turn and, upon activation and a tap of the screen, my entire Gmail account was archived – I had a clean in-box for the first time since, well, 2005.
It was a little jarring at first, to see this comprehensive database just disappear, but the messages were still there, they just weren’t in my face every time I went into my e-mail account. It was a fresh start, a new beginning. A better version of bankruptcy, one that didn’t result in credit problems or having to hire a lawyer.
The whole objective of Mailbox, as far as I can see, is to give users the tools to maintain this important state of equilibrium. Messages arrive and are dealt with through three basic swipes that – respectively – archive the message, delete the message or snooze the message, which is then delivered again after a period of time you designate. Deal, delete, or delay.
The vast majority of the mail I get falls into the instant delete category, so I rarely opt for the snooze function, but it’s a terrific and customizable option. The whole experience has changed my perceptions of e-mail management. I feel like this communications tool, incredibly important in my life, is finally under control and able to be processed in an orderly and effective way.
This is what my in-box usually looks like now, and I hope it never changes.

A Love Letter To The App That Makes Email Suck Less

I recently received a mail titled ‘Hi from Abhiraj, Co-founder at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UrbanClap&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">UrbanClap</a>!’ Suspicion sets in. Is he bashing me for negative coverage? I don’t remember any. Does he want to be-friend me? I’m no celeb. 
 Turns out its clever <keyword id="575288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="e-mail-marketing">e-mail marketing</keyword> - an automated message sent to probably thousands of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UrbanClap&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">UrbanClap</a> subscribers. 
 
Don’t jump to close your browser tabs now, hang on. 
 
It’s the first time I remember reading a mail like that from an Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">startup</a> worth over $100 million. Quirky Indian startups like Happily Unmarried and Bewakoof.com have also been sending out personalized e-mails. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Airtel</a> customers have been privy to mails from CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Gopal+Vittal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Gopal Vittal</a>. Only last year the company sent out mails, explaining the call drop phenomenon. 
 
Marketing e-mails from <a href="http://teamtreehouse.com/" target="_blank">Treehouse</a> co-founder <a href="https://twitter.com/ryancarson" target="_blank">Ryan</a> are fun and personal. 
 
E-mails are sent ‘from’ Ryan's email address, and the content is always personalized. The subject lines are creative. What more, if you reply to the mail, you'll even get a prompt response from Ryan himself. 
 
Adding a personal element to marketing emails helps. No one enjoys feeling like they're being marketed to. Most email tools allow you to enter short-codes that will be replaced with the recipient’s name when the email is sent out. 
 
In a day and age where consumers are bombarded with marketing messages, and it’s getting harder to get their attention, being impossible to miss without being annoying can take you a long way. 
 
In fact, according to an <a href="http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/31634/A-B-Testing-in-Action-3-Real-Life-Marketing-Experiments.aspx" target="_blank" title="A/B test conducted by our own marketing team">A/B test conducted by the marketing team </a>at HubSpot revealed that emails sent by a real person are more likely to be clicked on than emails sent from a company name. 
 The opportunity is for marketers to use the capabilities that are unique to <keyword id="2410330" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Marketing-automation">marketing automation</keyword> to make their email more conversational and relevant. This would include behavioral targeting, strategic metrics and multi-step cross-channel conversations. 
 
If <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=marketing+automation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">marketing automation</a> is used to its fullest, it can become a full-blown engagement-orchestration tool, enabling you to listen to consumers’ unique needs and deliver what they really want. No Indian startups have got to that. 
 
We’ve all received messages in our inbox, only to mark it as spam or completely ignore it. Grabbing your audience’s attention doesn’t necessarily mean your calls to action yell “Click me!” 
 
Me? I sleep happy knowing you would at least click on this article. You see, that’s the hook.

In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHf4S2qsak0">video trying to help his colleagues break free</a>, one Microsoft employee claimed that the email had ensnared as many as 11,543 Microsofties.Microsoft declined to comment.It all started when an employee changed a setting on the corporate GitHub account, according to reports from Microsoft employees on social media. GitHub is the mega-popular code-sharing site for programmers, of which Microsoft was a major power user even before it acquired it last year for $7.5 billion.The changed setting caused GitHub to send out an automatic message, with everyone involved in the account copied&#xa0; - which, judging from reports on social media, included everyone who works on Microsoft's GitHub account. Given that <a href="https://octoverse.github.com/projects">Microsoft is the top corporate contributor to open source projects on GitHub</a>, it's no surprise that it potentially reached over 11,000 people.&#xa0;According to Twitter posts, it didn't take long before it turned into a full-fledged fiasco: Some people committed the cardinal sin of this situation, and replied to everyone in the e-mail thread asking to be removed. Others cracked jokes to their captive audience, begged their colleagues to stop replying, or tried to offer useful advice to those stuck in the thread.What's more, a quirk in the system meant that even employees who managed to unsubscribe kept getting resubscribed, according to reports.&#xa0;It was, apparently, chaos.&#xa0;Ironically, the original message itself appears to have been a notification from GitHub with a tip on how to get fewer notifications from GitHub.&#xa0;<h2>The Bedlam connection</h2>The whole incident appears to have been extra-funny to long-time Microsofties, as it evokes a <a href="https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/exchange/2004/04/08/me-too/">legendary episode in the company's history</a>.Way back in 1997, Microsoft was still working the kinks out of Exchange, its now-ubiquitous corporate e-mail server. For the purposes of testing, Microsoft created a mailing list with some 25,000 employees on it, called Bedlam DL3, with the name chosen for reasons that are lost to time.An employee noticed that they were in the Bedlam DL3 group, and sent a message to the list asking to be removed.&#xa0;That message went to all 25,000 others in the mailing group. It sparked plenty of responses - again, some people tried to help, while others cracked jokes. But the most common reply was a simple "Me too!" from people who wanted off the Bedlam DL3 list and off the thread.&#xa0;Factoring in all of those messages, not to mention the read receipts that many employees had enabled, and it actually brought Microsoft's e-mail server to a standstill for two days while the IT department figured out how to fix it.To this day, Bedlam DL3 is still a running joke among Microsoft employees - indeed, during Microsoft's newest reply-all apocalypse, several employees are said to have added their own "Me too!" to the thread.&#xa0;In fact, some are already calling it "Bedlam V2," or even "Gitlam."Oh, and on a final note: The best advice for how to make sure a similar situation doesn't happen to you is to simply not reply to everybody when you're copied on a mass e-mail or other kind of message. As many as 11,543 Microsoft employees got swept up in a reply-all e-mail apocalypse

Rob LudacerIf you've corresponded with someone who uses Microsoft's Outlook email product, you may have noticed something weird: Their <a href="https://www.quora.com/Why-does-Outlook-insert-a-strangely-shaped-J-into-emails-instead-of-an-emoticon">e-mail messages might inexplicably end in the letter "J."</a>So you get weird messages like this:Screenshot/Matt WeinbergerIt's an infamous and longstanding issue, with a totally mundane answer - Microsoft Outlook autocorrects the ":)" smiley face emoticon to the "J" symbol in Microsoft's wacky, and proprietary, "Wingdings" font.That's fine if you're using Microsoft Outlook, or Microsoft Internet Explorer. But Google Chrome, the iOS Mail app, and plenty of other e-mail programs don't support the Wingdings font. So people using those products only see that weird and otherwise inexplicable "J," whenever their Microsoft-loving friends send them an emoji. This has been a <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/kasiagalazka/smiley-faces-js?utm_term=.nnAVL122Z#.nbJkQjwwE">well-documented problem since Outlook added emoticons in 2010</a>. Now, Microsoft tells Business Insider, the "J" problem is finally getting a fix, seven years later. The fix was first noticed by Guardian reporter Alex Hern on Twitter.Users of Outlook on Office 365, Microsoft's subscription-based cloud productivity suite, will find that the ":)" emoticon will actually get autocorrrected into a standard emoji. Which means that, as the feature rolls out, it's goodbye "J," and hello "😀." Microsoft expects the rollout of this update to be totally complete by the end of the year.So long as the recipient's e-mail program or web browser renders emoji - and the vast majority do - your message will be a lot more comprehensible. Plus, Microsoft says, Outlook itself will get better at rendering iOS and Android emoji, meaning that the emoji language barrier between Office and the rest of the world is slowly cracking.Here's Microsoft's full explanation:Outlook uses Word as its authoring tool. Previously, we automatically changed ":)" to a smiley face character in the font face WingDings. When that email would show up in another client that doesn't support Wingdings font, it can't show that character. So it gets replaced. J is the character in the windings font that is a smile, so that is what was displayed in Gmail, iOS Mail, etc. We've recently released an update that fixes this. Now, we properly represent emojis as true emojis. This means any other email app that recognizes emojis will display the emoji in their app. We have also improved Outlook's rendering of other email services emojis. The whole mess was documented in the cringe-worthy e-mail exchange below. The kid's <keyword id="93698" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="resume">resume</keyword> was also attached, and it was a mess - difficult to read and including zero relevant experience for finance.
Luckily, the MD he e-mailed had mercy. He didn't tell the kid he was a failure, he didn't tell him he'd 'never work in this town again'. Instead, this MD told the kid he'd pretend the e-mail exchange never happened.
It's a gracious thing to do, and when you read the exchange below, you'll see why.

But, as he's found, it can be hard to keep up with all those messages, and things can fall through the cracks. Which is why, when Arnett found out about <a href="http://www.timyo.com">Timyo</a>, an app designed to give users more control over their inboxes, he got really jazzed."Selfishly, I thought, 'oh, this would be great for me,'" he told Business Insider.He was so excited about the app that about a year ago, he bought a stake in the eponymous company behind it, marking his first-ever investment in tech. And he was so enthusiastic, he gradually became an advisor to the company, too. New Delhi, The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday conducted raids against <keyword id="6357252" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hero-motocorp" source="Orion">Hero Motocorp</keyword> executive chairperson <keyword id="87849" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pawan-munjal" source="Orion">Pawan Munjal</keyword> and others as part of a money laundering investigation, official sources said. The searches were carried out at premises located in Delhi and neighbouring Gurugram in accordance with provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The investigation stems from a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) complaint against a person, allegedly close to Munjal, who was investigated on charges of carrying undeclared foreign currency. There's just one problem with the allegation: Weather Channel tells Business Insider that it's totally false.
The Reddit user, <a href="http://www.reddit.com/user/czarrie">czarrie</a>, says:
So I logged into my GMail account for the first time in a few days and find a pile of bizarre-looking replies to e-mails that I never sent, addressed to people with names that can be abbreviated to my email address (which I won't share here). The e-mails I have are all generated replies, whereas the original messages all seem to be directed at DirectTV, concerned about how DirectTV has dropped TWC, and how these letters are "being forward to their Congressmen" or something of the like.
... So, who's getting paid to spoof these e-mails/faxes to DirectTV?

No, The Weather Channel Is Not Hacking Your Gmail Account To Deliver Spam To DirecTV

<keyword id="1702690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Edward-Snowden">Edward Snowden</keyword> <a href="https://twitter.com/Max_Fisher/status/355702194437226498">is apparently using the service,</a> which jumped into existence in 2004 as a result of a few privacy concerned citizens and some scary Google Gmail analytics.
"At the time, Lavabit’s founders felt Gmail was a great service but that Google was actively violating the privacy of its users by displaying ads related to keywords in their e-mail," says the Lavabit official website.
So a few Texas programmers with a self-described "maniacal level of dedication" and "experience building mission critical systems" started a company called Nerdshack LLC, which then changed to Lavabit in 2005.
Google's propensity to scan emails for key words and then market those analytics to advertisers was a clear violation of privacy to the Lavabit founders.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/snowden-says-nsa-has-direct-access-to-tech-companies-2013-7"> Considering recent revelations</a>, the founding of Lavabit seems almost prophetic.
Among other services, the one they offer, and the one Snowden wanted (and possibly all of us now ... thanks to Edward), was an encrypted email service that requires a user's password to decrypt.
It's called "Asymmetric <keyword id="207797" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="encryption">Encryption</keyword>."

The short description is that for users of this feature, incoming e-mail messages are encrypted before they’re saved onto our servers. Once a message has been encrypted, only someone who has the account password can decrypt the message. Like all safety measures, encryption is only effective if it’s used. 
There's <a href="http://lavabit.com/secure.html">a more in-depth description here</a>, but the simple end-state is that the information is passed through a highly convoluted encryption process that ultimately makes it a massive pain in the rear for agencies like the <keyword id="38879" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NSA">NSA</keyword> to decrypt.
"In theory, an attacker with unlimited computing resources could use brute force to decipher the original message," reads the site, "However in practice, the key lengths Lavabit has chosen equal enough possible inputs that a brute-force attack shouldn’t be feasible for a long time to come."
