When you read about developing your “executive presence”, you automatically think of your professional attire, your body language, and possibly your voice. Of course, these are all important elements to work on, but quite often, the effort stops there. You figure, if you look and act like a successful businessperson, that’s all you need to be perceived as somebody with leadership potential. 
 
But executive presence is a “total skill”. Your effort to develop executive presence doesn’t stop once you’ve chosen the perfect power outfit or mastered confidence-exuding body language postures. It continues with every interaction you have in your professional life, and that includes your e-mails. 
 To help you lift the level of professionalism in your e-mails and achieve <keyword id="2586891" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Total-Executive">total executive</keyword> presence, I want to share with you five of my favourite tips on e-mail etiquette. 
 
1. Decide if you’re writing a formal or an <keyword id="2586890" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="informal-E-mail">informal e-mail</keyword> This choice really depends on whom you’re writing to and the relationship you have with that person. For somebody, whom you’ve never met, or somebody from a formal culture (e.g., Japan, France or China), it’s a safer choice to use a formal style e-mail. But if you’re writing to a co-worker whom you’ve just had lunch with, a <keyword id="2586889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="formal-E-mail">formal e-mail</keyword> would probably make them feel uncomfortable. Opt for an informal style instead. 
 
2. Choose a subject line that is short but descriptive 
The subject line is the first thing your reader will see. When I’m coaching clients on executive writing, I often explain that the subject line in an e-mail is their “first impression” of you. You wouldn’t turn up to a meeting in sneakers and unkempt clothing. Just as you wouldn’t send somebody an e-mail with a subject line full of errors or no description at all. Take the time to craft a subject line that answers the question in your reader’s mind, “Why is he/she writing to me?”. 
 
3. Use the appropriate salutation to connect with your reader 
Sometimes you may know that person well, and a simple “Hi Jane” is sufficient. Other times you might be writing to an important client, or somebody whom you’ve never met. In that case, using “Dear Ms Hutchinson” or “Dear Jane” is probably more suitable. 
 
4. Know the difference between the US and the UK style punctuation 
Yes, there is a difference. In fact, there are many differences between the US and the UK style punctuation. Why is this important for your e-mails? Because you want to tailor your e-mails to your reader and if your reader is not familiar with the style of punctuation you use, they may assume it’s incorrect and a mistake. The most common difference I’m asked about is: do you place a full stop (period) after “Mr” or “Ms”? Basically, in the US style, you do. In the UK style, you don’t. 5. Always sign-off I know we can all get busy with our jobs or our <keyword id="6358610" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Businesses">businesses</keyword>, but it really doesn’t take long to write a simple “Kind regards”, or “Best”, and then type your name at the end of an e-mail. One of my pet peeves is when I receive an e-mail and the sender hasn’t taken the time to include a simple sign-off after their message and hasn’t even written their name. Going straight from the body of your e-mail directly to your signature line without adding in a simple “Best regards” and your name, can immediately make your e-mail seem rushed, impersonal and often pushy.

<keyword id="536283" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rahul-Yadav">Rahul Yadav</keyword>, CEO of Housing.com was kicked out of the company he formed yesterday, citing that his behaviour was not, "befitting of a CEO and detrimental to the company." 
 
Touted as the bad boy of Indian startups, thanks to his attitude and theatrics, Yadav has been in the media limelight for all the wrong reasons. First it was the public spat with Shailendra Singh, MD at Sequoia Capital India, and then he got into a brawl with the Times of India group. Following that he publicly resigned, only to join again and dole out all his Rs. 200 Crores worth shares to his employees. 
 
While Yadav may be gone for good, here is a list of the top CEOs across the world who did things they wish never appeared in the media: 
 
1.Naughty on SnapChat is fine, on e-mails? Not

Snapchat’s young co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel is often looked upon as technology’s next big thing. He brushes aside offers from Mark Zuckerberg and hangs out with the best in the industry. 
 
While that is all fine, a spill of emails from his college life in Stanford left the young entrepreneur embarrassed. After all, which CEO will like his jokes about peeing on girls to be made public? There are mentions to pole dances, rave parties, cocaine and Snapchat’s co-founder Bobby Murphy - "Bobby is really high now." 
 
2.Kick a Dog, get kicked out of your Job

If you’re caught kicking a dog on camera, it sure can cost you your job, even if you are the CEO. 
 
Desmond Hague, CEO of catering specialist Centerplate was forced to resign on grounds of ‘animal cruelty’. He was replaced by Chris Verros as acting CEO. 
 
The company’s official statement asserted, “The decision comes as a result of Hague's personal misconduct involving the mistreatment of an animal in his care.” 
 
3.Oppose gay marriage, see the door

Mozilla’s CEO Brendan Eich was effectively pushed out of the company after a dating website asked for a boycott of the web browser as Eich had offered a sizeable donation to those against gay marriage. 
 
While the donation was back in 2008, the company saw Eich’s actions as a potential threat to its policy of inclusiveness and diversity. The CEO was given the option to seek a sincere apology, stand by his actions and put the company at risk, or resign. He chose the last. 
 
4.Apparel CEO fired after sleaze fest

American Apparel finally got tired of the weird acts of CEO Dov Charney and showed him the door. Some even called him ‘the merchant of sleaze’. 
 
One can’t blame them. After all, would shareholders like to watch a YouTube video with the CEO dancing nude in front of his female colleagues or face repeated allegations of sexual harassment? You guessed it right. 
 
What does he have to say for himself? Hear it from the horse’s mouth, “Sex is inextricably linked to fashion and apparel,” Charney said. “And it has been and always will be. And our clothing is connected to our sexual expression.” 
 
5.Violence is NOT cool. Period.

CEOs that
tried to pull off a Rahul Yadav and got axed

Last Sunday afternoon, at 12.34pm, I received an <keyword id="29411" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="email">email</keyword> from someone I did not know. The email was titled simply "Hey." and contained a link to a nefarious looking website.
Within a half hour or so, another person I did not know responded, adding simply "spam?"
I didn't know it at the time, but this was the beginning of my ascent into "reply-all" hell. Since Sunday afternoon I've received 293 emails from people I don't know in response to this first email. What's worse, is that this doesn't seem to be the standard case of stupidity, naivety, or unfunny jokes — instead, me and the 342 other people trapped on the email list from hell seem to be stuck in some kind of infinite loop.
It took me a little while to realize, but it's all <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>'s fault.
<div class="image-container" style="width:800px"><div class="image">ScreengrabThe beginning.</div></div>Every person who has a Facebook account has a Facebook e-mail address. This is an email address that can be used to send messages to your Facebook account.
This feature was implemented in 2010, but the service never really took off — <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-changes-users-primary-email-addresses-2012-6">despite Facebook making it your "default" email address</a>. It's still there, however, and it's still possible to send messages to people via their Facebook email address, which is usually related to their username.
One place you are likely to have seen Facebook email addresses is in your mobile phone's contact book. If you've ever synced your contacts with your Facebook profile, you may notice that when you look at a contact on your phone is an "@facebook.com" address for them. It's a little confusing, and has sparked a small amount of controversy <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57464415-93/facebook-e-mail-mess-address-books-altered-e-mail-lost/">from some who said it was replacing their original contacts</a>, but other than that it always seemed harmless.
That is, until it trapped me in an infinite loop of "reply-all" emails.
I actually never read the first email with that nefarious link that was sent to me — my spam filter caught it. Looking back, I can see that I must have been in the person's address book because they tried to contact me about a story a couple of times (I never responded). Then it appears that this person got some kind of virus that sent the dodgy link out to everyone in his contact book.
Curiously, I would guess that the email may have been sent from this person's phone. How can I tell? Because more around half of the addresses on the list seem to be "@facebook.com" email addresses, amongst the many gmail addresses and the automatically created "@craigslist.org" addresses.
By their very nature, the Facebook email addresses add another layer of disaster to this "reply-all" email thread. This is because they are two things at once — both emails and Facebook messages.
When one of the Facebook users, understandably, wants to leave the conversation, they click "leave conversation" in their Facebook message window. Doing this, however, sends the following message to all people on the email chain:
"Auto-generated message: [Person's Name] has left this conversation and will no longer see your messages"
For reasons I don't quite seem to understand, it's not quite as simple as that for the Facebook users. Despite the 293 emails that have been sent, almost all attempts to leave the thread, my latest email shows 306 people on the respondent list for the latest email. According to the emails, some people appear to have "left this conversation" multiple times, but they are still there in the latest email. Those who are receiving the messages on their normal email addresses, like me, for example, have no option to "leave the conversation" at all.
Personally, I am not particularly upset when I get stuck in "reply-all" email threads. I am aware of how to block email addresses or mute certain conversations in gmail. Whenever I get a new email in this particular email thread, I chuckle to myself, thinking "Wow, it's still going."
However, amongst the others, things are getting a little Lord of the Flies-esque amongst those in this "reply-all" society.
"Mark" writes:
If I find out who put me on this list, they will be banned from my Friend's list.
"David" seemed confused:
What in the world is all this about and why now am I seeing it on Facebook after a day of constantly having to clean out my regular [mail] inbox the last couple of days?
"Rebecca" is exasperated:
how the hell do you make this message stop.. I have hit leave conversation now over [ten] times and this shit keeps showing up in my inbox and popping up a chat box. .
Someone named "Big David" wrote 560 words in size 18 font admonishing people for hitting the "reply-all" button — slightly missing the point, I felt.
Sadly, the problem may not go away away anytime soon. According to Facebook's Community Help pages, the issue is widespread. One man complains <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/community/question/?id=10151104880743342">he's been getting hundreds of messages for months</a>. In a post marked "leave a conversation for eternity," someone complains that <a href="https://www.facebook.com/help/community/question/?id=521868234522113">they've been getting the messages for around 6 months</a> and have tried multiple tactics to get themselves out of the infinite message loop.
For now, I've put up a filter that will keep the emails out of my inbox. It's a minor annoyance, sure, but it's a sad legacy for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/henry-blodget-facebooks-plan-to-build-a-real-email-system-and-kill-gmail-is-brilliant-2010-2">an email system even Business Insider</a> once called "brilliant."

I'm Trapped In The Reply-All Email Chain From Hell, And It's All Facebook's Fault

We're not used to the pacing yet. Rutgers <keyword id="107736" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Business-school">Business School</keyword> professor Terri Kurtzberg says that while in audible conversations “it’s clear how long a silence should last before you need to respond. There’s no norm with digital communication."

We want to say no to a favor asked, but feel guilty. “I want to say ‘no,’ but feel that the right thing is to say ‘yes,’ so I am frozen and then I plan on going back to the e-mail to draft a reply, but it gets buried. Then I feel even worse for not replying and put it off again. It’s not nice to leave people hanging, but I do.”

It's easier. “If people send me a message that I don’t want to deal with, it’s easier not to respond. At this stage, there are so many requests from my children, I can’t deal with requests from adults.”

Not replying sends a message. “Recently, a nanny asked me for a job reference. I don’t think the nanny deserves the reference. I thought about responding, but didn’t. To me, it’s easier not to say something.”

REVEALED: Why People Don't Respond To Emails Anymore

The <keyword id="6406875" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="life-insurance">Life Insurance</keyword> Corporation (<keyword id="6367143" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="LIC">LIC</keyword>) has pulled off a record claim performance by settling 99.92 per cent of death claims in 2016-17 as against industry average of 95 per cent, according to a PTI news reporter. The <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> behemoth is keen to push the boundary further, looking to settle 99 per cent claims on a monthly basis too in future. "LIC has settled 99.92 per cent of death claims in 2016- 17, which is undoubtedly one of the best performances not only in the country, but in the world," an LIC source told PTI here. According to industry body <keyword id="75047" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Life-Insurance-Council">Life Insurance Council</keyword>, there are a total of 24 players, including LIC, active in the life insurance space and the industry average of death claim settlement stands at around 95 per cent. "One of the fundamental reasons for the strong brand of LIC is our service delivery and... our claim settlement operations in particular," the source said, adding that "we would expect that not only we continue to focus on this area, but further strengthen it by settling 99 per cent claims on month on month basis". Till date, LIC has had nearly 11 lakh such cases outstanding and expects that each and every case needs to be followed up to its logical end. According to the source, the customer relationship management (CRM) department of LIC has been asked to ensure claim particular sheis prepared for every outstanding case and regular monitoring is done. LIC, the source said, is making further efforts in the CRM space, where the corporation would like to see visible and perceptible changes in the quality of response to customers, turnaround time in attending to customer complaints or queries, courteous attitude and business etiquette of officials dealing with customers. According to the source, prompt handling of queries by the SMS-based helpline has brought down the number of complaints drastically and it would revive the helpdesk in each branch so that customer is attended to promptly. "Further, to provide instant service, we need to ensure our customers are empowered to use e-services. Their mobile numbers, e-mails and <keyword id="285745" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEFT">NEFT</keyword> details are registered as early as possible to provide instant services," the source added. As for information technology, LIC's immediate focus is to ensure comprehensive cyber security for data, software as well as hardware. This is all the more relevant in the wake of the Wannacry malware attack that hit computers across globe. The corporation may go for a net addition of 69,000 agents, potentially taking its agency strength to 11,31,181 at the end of March 2017.

LIC sets record on claims front, settles 99.92 per cent cases

Of those, 2,576 - almost half - were accompanied by "secrecy orders," meaning that Microsoft wasn't allowed to tell the customer or anybody else that law enforcement had access to their data.In fact, Microsoft says, 1,752 of those secrecy orders came with no time limit, meaning that they will never be allowed to inform the customer. In the <a href="https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/2803275/Microsoft-challenges-constitutionality-of-gag.pdf">court filing</a>, Microsoft writes:Microsoft brings this case because its customers have a right to know when the government obtains a warrant to read their emails, and because Microsoft has a right to tell them. Still, it's challenging to make meetings as engaging, efficient, and productive as the "real" thing. Here are five ways to jump-start your next virtual meeting:<h3>1. Encourage interactivity.</h3>One of the main drawbacks of virtual meetings is that you don't always have that ease and familiarity with the coworkers in your office. But just because you're not sitting in the same room doesn't mean you can't engage in office banter or small talk to make meetings more enjoyable. Make your meetings as interactive as possible by doing something as small as starting the meeting by asking everyone how they're doing (in their respective part of the world), calling on people, and eliciting feedback.<h3>2. Make sure everyone knows the purpose of the meeting.</h3>There's nothing more annoying than going to a meeting without knowing what the goal is. Be sure to circulate an agenda and all necessary materials ahead of time, and let everyone know what you hope to accomplish. Structure the meeting so you address all of the most important points and can reach a decision by the end. Otherwise, you might waste time on a conversation that could have taken place over e-mail. Everyone's time is valuable, including yours.<h3>3. Use reliable technology.</h3>Technology can either be a saving grace or a burden. For virtual meetings especially, you have to make sure your tools are intuitive and reliable. Technical difficulties - or disturbances like frequent software updates - can quickly ruin any meeting. No one likes having a meeting at the tail end of his or her workday.<h3>5. Be selective about who is invited.</h3>Unsurprisingly, meetings are even harder to schedule when there are a lot of people involved. And they can get out of hand when there are several people talking at once. 5 ways to make virtual meetings as good as the real thing

However, in tech media circles, D'Aloisio was already well known.
In 2011, Gizmodo's Casey Chan <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5830076/how-i-made-a-15+year+old-app-developer-cry">wrote about making D'Aloisio cry</a>. Chan covered apps for Gizmodo. So, D'Aloisio emailed Chan to see if he would write about his app, which was called Trimit at the time.
Chan said he was interested in the app. This led to D'Aloisio going nuts.
"Over the course of a few days, D'aloisio berserker barraged me with over a hundred e-mails about Trimit," says Chan, "I saw him go from calm to excited to a nervous wreck to suffering a nervous break down to threatening to bat shit crazy to borderline suicidal."
D'Aloisio never mentioned that he was only 15 at the time.
After not getting quick responses from Chan, he went on to email everyone else at Gizmodo. In response to D'Aloisio's email barrage, Gizmodo decided to name Trimit the "worst app of the week." But, the editors felt bad about that, so they just pulled the coverage altogether.
This sent D'Aloisio over the edge. He wrote to Chan:

We'd planned so much marketing and SEO for this feature. Now we're not going to get the visibility and get into debt. Casey, you must understand what this will do to us if you don't put us back on the list. I thought you liked the app, why do you want to destroy it.
Come on man, please forgive me. We all make mistakes. Why didn't you tell me days ago to stop emailing you! I thought you weren't getting them, that's why I kept sending them.
Seriously without this feature we will lose ranking and then we won't pay back our purchases and then will have to stop the business.
I plea for you to put it back to how it was before. I plea.
Now we've wasted $10,000 as we dont have the article to accompany the efforts.
That puts us in debt and we can't pay that back for ourselves so now I'm going to have to go without food for the next month.
I am new, we've just started the startup, and I've never been in PR so I'm not familiar with these journalistic conducts and etiquettes I seem to have broken. I was not meaning to hurt any of you guys or disrupt your work at all; none of that was intentional. I WILL GET FIRED now because of all of this but I guess I can't change what has happened now. Our marketing has failed since we were not featured and now I have massive debt which is my responsibility to fix.
I'll ask you for the final time to understand the seriousness of the situation and change it back to the way it was. What is stopping you? Why ruin my livelihood and my app? Why would you want that, seriously?
Please man. Please.

While this appears to be the ramblings of a crazy person, it also shows someone with a dedication, focus, and energy to succeed. (And, again, he was 15!)
Gizmodo wasn't the only publication that got aggressive emails from D'Aloisio. He was in our writers' inboxes too.
While we don't want to encourage others to bomb our inbox with pitches, we think his behavior reveals a big part of the reason he's successful.
The kid is a hustler. He works hard. He's aggressive. He went after his investors, he pursued the media.
In one of his interviews from yesterday <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/17-year-old-startup-millionaire-want-to-be-like-me-just-do-it-2013-3">he told people who want to be like him</a>: "If you have a good idea, or you think there's a gap in the market, just go out and launch it because there are investors across the world right now looking for companies to invest in."
This is obviously an oversimplification, but it's not terribly far from the truth. If you have a good idea, and you're willing to work incredibly hard like D'Aloisio, you'll probably find success.
