<ul><li><keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">Online grocery</keyword> segment will grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword>. </li><li>Today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India. </li><li>Startups in the online grocery sector have raised $665.70 million in funding in 2019 so far.</li></ul>The Indian online grocery segment is growing fast and how. Currently the online food and grocery retail holds a miniscule part of online retail with only 0.2% penetration. But it is predicted to grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and BigBasket. The market size of this segment will also expand to $10.5 billion, the report predicts. The customers’ trust on online shopping along with the growing presence of e-grocery players will drive this growth in the sector, added the report. “The online grocery segment has been one of the fastest-growing e-commerce verticals in India and will continue to flourish in both metro and non-metro cities in the years to come,” said Hari Menon, Co-Founder and CEO, bigbasket. Online grocery vs E-commerce in India As Indians are used to visiting the kirana store in the next lane, online grocery has been growing slowly since onset in 2010. In the past few years however it picked up speed. As the number of e-commerce users grew it had a slow but steady effect on online grocery purchases. From a barely any presence in 2010, today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India.

 So, what led to this growth? “The online grocery space in India has accelerated due to the increasing penetration of internet in millions of households across the country, rise in smartphone usage, enhanced customer comfort and trust in e-tailing and a better value for money for customers in online vs offline stores. Grofers co-founder Dhindsa believes that the next big thing in e-grocery is increasing penetration of e-commerce in tier-2 markets and amongst lower SECs (socio-economic classification) in metros. “E-grocery will bring more shoppers into e-commerce as a whole and already 15% of our new users every month are first time online shoppers. Growing disposable income of the consumers in Tier II markets and the adoption of 4G has already laid a strong foundation for the next wave of growth for e-commerce,” he said.

New Delhi, As the e-commerce battle intensifies in India, with <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword>'s JioMart being the latest major entrant with a massive potential to disrupt the space, the next big thing is the <keyword id="6355447" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="delivery">delivery</keyword> of <keyword id="389479" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="groceries">groceries</keyword> online and the market size is estimated to grow eight times in the next five years in the country. As companies from Reliance to BigBasket put their top dollar in serving daily grocery at your doorsteps, <keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">online grocery</keyword> is going to be the next battleground for growth, expanding to over $18 billion by 2024. The eGrocery market has grown 60% from the calendar year 2020 and is expected to grow 41-49 per cent by the first half of CY21, according to the latest data provided by homegrown consulting firm RedSeer. Another recent report by Bengaluru-based RedSeer and Bigbasket (Brand Intelligence) found that demand for comfort foods like noodles and cookies, immunity boosters such as lemon, and hygiene products like sanitisers picked up after the pandemic while essentials remained strong. Within snacks and branded foods, biscuits and cookies were the largest sub-category and grew the most. "We have observed that traditional brands which pivoted quickly to be digitally ready brands have seen 2x+ jump in sales compared to offline brands," said Anil Kumar, founder and CEO of RedSeer. Now, JioMart is set to take the pole position in online delivery of groceries. "Grocery is the largest retail category. This makes it an important category for retailers and one that is going to drive future growth of online retail sales. JioMart will definitely be a key player in the months to come," said Satish Meena, Senior Forecast Analyst with global market research firm Forrester. Driven by the uptick in online grocery adoption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, "online retail sales will grow at a CAGR of 30 per cent from 2019 to 2024 and reach $359 billion", Meena informed. India is witnessing a surge in demand for online grocery. The latest Reliance takeover of <keyword id="44949" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>'s retail business is a major consolidation of organised grocery retail. In terms of grocery retail, the revenue of Reliance Retail in FY20 was Rs 346 billion and that of Future Retail's annualised revenue for FY20 was Rs 100 billion. According to Meena, grocery will also be the category where most marketplaces' investments will be made in the next five years. Reliance Jio's new commerce platform JioMart and Whatsapp will be working closely to create growth opportunities for millions of Indian small merchants and kirana shops, <keyword id="6355199" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani said recently. In India, there are more than 15 million monthly WhatsApp Business app users, and more than 400 million overall users. Reliance aims to integrate JioMart in WhatsApp within the next six months. The Covid-19 induced lockdowns and social distancing led to a surge in online orders for groceries, driven by utility as 80% of those who ordered online during lockdown did it for convenience as opposed to price and selection. According to a survey by LocalCircles, 52% online grocery shoppers found the e-commerce grocery apps useful during lockdown. As many as 32% online grocery shoppers placed one or more orders every week during the lockdown while 38% found fruits and vegetables delivered via e-commerce grocery apps to be of poor quality. A recent Bernstein report said that Reliance is "best positioned in new commerce, digitising neighbourhood stores, and e-commerce apps (JioMart and AJIO)". Online Grocery market estimated to grow eight times in 5 years in India, JioMart big gainer

As <keyword id="1729388" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-grocery" source="Orion">e-grocery</keyword> platforms pick up momentum in India, <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword>'s social commerce offering <keyword id="12587365" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shopsy" source="Orion">Shopsy</keyword> on Tuesday announced that it has started offering grocery as a category on its platform. Leveraging the Flipkart Group's supply chain infrastructure and tech capabilities, Grocery on Shopsy will cater to consumers across 700 cities, spanning over 5,800 pincodes. "Grocery is a key consumer need and we are committed to making e-grocery affordable for consumers and sellers alike. We have been working on reducing the cost of delivering groceries over the last few months. We are happy to announce that we have achieved best in class cost structure which makes us confident of scaling grocery on Shopsy," Prakash Sikaria, Senior Vice President - Growth, Flipkart said in a statement. Grocery on Shopsy will host over 6,000 products across 230 categories - ranging from staples, FMCG, and other dry groceries; matching the selection and range available on <keyword id="7658655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-grocery" source="Orion">Flipkart Grocery</keyword>. With groceries on Shopsy, users can now shop for value groceries by adding and checking out products in their cart or by combining orders for multiple individuals in their network. Users can avail of a flat 5 per cent commission margin that will directly be credited to the linked bank account as well as enjoy up to 50 per cent savings, the company claims. Flipkart's Grocery fulfilment centres including centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna and Pune that will be leveraged by Shopsy, have fully digitised processes and product quality checks. These centres have implemented effective quality management systems to ensure the products are traceable from raw materials until they reach the consumer, without losing their freshness. Launched by Flipkart in July 2021 with the aim to make digital commerce accessible across India through a zero-commission marketplace. Shopsy has over 2.5 lakh sellers on the platform who provide 150 million products across 250+ categories and is on track to enable over 25 million online entrepreneurs by 2023. Flipkart's Shopsy launches e-grocery in 700 cities

Yesterday, <a href="https://factordaily.com/amazon-future-group/">news broke</a> that <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> was planning to buy a 10% stake in the <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> arm of Future Group, an Indian conglomerate headed by Kishore Biyani. The move highlights Amazon India’s ambitions in the brick-and-mortar retail space, and follows its acquisition of a 5% stake in Shoppers Stop last September. Given that foreign companies are barred from directly investing in India’s multi-brand retail space, as <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> knows all too well, Amazon has to make its investment through an entity that is registered as a foreign portfolio investor. It is also limited to a 10% stake. Talks between the two companies commenced <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/kishore-biyani-explores-future-groups-journey-with-amazon/articleshow/62798408.cms">in January</a>. The $600 million deal, if it goes through, will be significant for India’s retail market. Future Retail Ltd includes the company’s Big Bazaar, Easyday and Foodhall brand of supermarkets. The companies already have <a href="https://www.amazon.in/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=8520579031">a strategic alliance</a> in place, wherein Amazon sells clothes on its online platform from Future Retail’s fashion brands. With the deal, Amazon can give Future Retail’s <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> and sourcing operations a leg up while gaining access to the latter’s extensive customer base and supply chain network. Amazon wants to expand its grocery businesses in India and a tie-up with Future Retail, which sources a large portion of its sales from the food and grocery segment, can achieve that. Amazon’s potential consolidation of a multi-channel approach to India’s retail market, with a special focus on grocery, comes hot on the heels of US competitor Walmart’s $16 billion acquisition of <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, India’s largest e-commerce firm. Walmart, <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/walmart-flipkart-deal-signals-churn-in-e-grocery/1174255/">which has its own plans for India’s food and grocery market</a>, is also said to be in talks to buy a stake in Future Retail, although sources revealed that Amazon was a frontrunner. The Whole Foods acquisition The move echoes Amazon’s retail strategy in the US, where it’s fending off Walmart’s entry into e-commerce by expanding into physical retail. In June 2017, Amazon agreed to buy Whole Foods Inc, a food supermarket chain with an entirely physical presence, for <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/16/business/dealbook/amazon-whole-foods.html">$13.4 billion</a>. While this was partly an attempt to take on the giant Walmart in the brick-and-mortar retail space, it also showed Amazon’s intent to become a bigger force in the food and grocery market. It realised that there was still a sizeable amount of customers who preferred buying their food in person. By combining its online and physical presence, Amazon wanted to provide customers in the US with a variety of channels to purchase groceries and other items - just like it plans to do in India. But the plan in the US wasn’t just limited to groceries. It wanted to start selling groceries offline, and then use that as a launchpad for selling everything that is non-perishable to customers. The battle comes to India It was clear with Amazon’s counter-offer for Flipkart that Amazon and Walmart are gearing for another faceoff in India. With a lot of cash at their disposal, both companies will exploit a number of retail channels in the race to sales and customer growth. Amazon has already got it’s online grocery business in India <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/amazon-food-retail-pune/">off the ground,</a> and now it will look to one-up Walmart and make inroads in the physical retail space. As has been said before, one thing is for certain. It is Indian consumers who stand to benefit most from this competition in the short term. Not only will all kinds of products be more accessible than ever before, they will be cheaper. However, the freedom of choice isn’t going to last forever. There will be more acquisitions, and Flipkart and Amazon India will get bigger and smaller players will be eaten up. One company will likely edge the other out. And then we’ll be totally dependent on the winner.

Amazon and Walmart prepare for a face-off in India’s physical retail and online grocery markets, just like in the US

<ul><li>After a couple of dull years and a few failures, online grocery in India is back with a bang. </li><li>SoftBank has put in fresh funds in Grofers while Reliance Industries Limited is reportedly looking to buy a majority stake in Grab. </li><li>Swiggy had recently announced its foray into online grocery delivery with Swiggy stores. </li></ul> There was a time when the online grocery vertical had become the hot favourite with major players trying their luck in the game. But soon with failures piling up one over the other, exits were announced. Come 2019 and it seems like it’s going to be the year hyperlocal grocery delivery again. Sector leader BigBasket may become the first unicorn – clock a valuation of $1 billion – of 2019, and food delivery startup Swiggy threw in its hat into groceries with Swiggy Stores. Swiggy, which raised a whopping $1 billion in funding in December, has already piloted the operations in Gurugram and has tied up with <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/swiggy-takes-on-bigbasket-grofers-to-deliver-groceries-from-local-stores-119021201294_1.html">3,500</a> local stores. However, these startups will be battling the deep pockets of Mukesh Ambani and the Japanese Softbank. Reliance Industries Limited is <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/ril-in-talks-for-majority-stake-in-startup-grab/articleshow/68192744.cms">reportedly</a> in talks to buy a majority stake in Grab, a hyperlocal delivery startup for groceries, medicines and food based out of Mumbai. Grofers has raised <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/grofers-raises-fresh-funds-from-existing-investor-softbank-as-e-grocers-valuation-hits-425m/68203728">fresh funds</a> from SoftBank Vision Fund (the Japanese firm had earlier too invested in the e-grocery company) which takes its valuation to $425 million. This excitement was missing in the space the last few years. E-grocery startup PepperTap had to shut its operations in 2016. In a blog on <a href="https://yourstory.com/2016/04/peppertap-journey-navneet-singh">YourStory</a>, Navneet Singh, founder of PepperTap, wrote about the problem they faced. “The integration of our app with our partner stores was not great. In the race to pepper the whole country with PepperTap, we had brought too many stores online far too quickly,” he wrote. Another unicorn startup Paytm too had explored the e-grocery space with Paytm Zip, only to shut shop in 2015. So, even with clear failures in the past, what makes today’s unicorns still find their way into the space? A simple answer - the demand still exists. Grocery stores aren’t called convenience stores for nothing. For today’s millennial who is busy with work to order groceries on a tap is an easy, convenient way out. A report on the online grocery space in India by Red Seer consulting states, “Inspite of all these disruptions and changes, one thing that did not change was the massive potential for online grocery- as indicated by India’s USD 500+ Bn grocery market out of which a mere 0.2% is online (~USD 1.2 bn overall and ~USD 1 Bn considering only hyperlocal grocery).” The proof that it still works is seen in BigBasket’s <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/bigbaskets-wholesale-unit-revenue-up-35/articleshow/67358734.cms">revenue</a> report. In the year 2017-18, BigBasket saw its revenue grow by 35% while losses dropped by 53%. In FY19, the company expects the revenue to grow by <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/bigbasket-chief-hari-menon-expects-75-revenue-jump-in-fy19-to-rs-3500-crore-3183251.html">75%</a>. Grofers which had posted a net loss of <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/grofers-narrows-loss-to-rs-258-cr-as-sales-double-in-fy2018/68105608">₹268 crore</a> in FY 17, managed to post a loss of ₹258 crore in FY18. The company has also added <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/grofers-eyes-rs-2500-crore-revenue-in-fy19-adds-2-5-lakh-new-customers-in-january-3453911.html">2.5 lakh</a> new customers in January, while also aiming for a revenue of over ₹2500 crore. And with big backers like Mukesh Ambani and Softbank entering the fray, the competition, too, will be intense. The battle for dominance may mean more discounts and cashbacks for consumers. Online grocers are back in business in India with billions more to burn – and that may be good for consumers

Flipkart ups its game in e-grocery by expanding to 50 cities as competition rises from JioMart, Amazon and others
