Legendary Entertainment confirms 'Dune 3' following worldwide box office success of 'Dune: Part Two'

And he becomes a powerful messianic figure, called the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-character-guide-houses-explained-differences-from-novel-2021-10#also-in-the-mix-is-the-mystical-bene-gesserit-sisterhood-4">Kwisatz Haderach</a>. But when he drinks the liquid — which comes from a sandworm — he falls into a coma.</p><p>While unconscious, Paul has a vision of Alia hiking through the desert on Arrakis before finding herself on a beach, with the waves of an ocean lapping at her feet. Yes, an actual ocean on the desert planet.</p><p>In the books, Arrakis is eventually terraformed into a less hostile version of itself, complete with jungles and oceans, so this could be a nod to that.</p><h2><strong>Alia Atreides could replace her brother in 'Dune: Part Three'</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Timothee Chalamet holding up a knife" height="960" width="1280" msid="108241046" hostid="261" sizebytes="50964"></div><p>If "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-3-potential-plot-dune-messiah-timothee-chalamet-2023-9">Dune: Part Three</a>" happens, it's possible that Taylor-Joy will become a more prominent part of the franchise, and if Villeneuve continues to follow the books, it's possible she'll replace Paul as the head of the Atreides family, and the universe itself.</p><p>Considering Alia is still in the womb in "Part Two," there would need to be a time jump for "Part Three" to explain how she's already a young woman. Or Villeneuve could just chalk up the accelerated aging to the spooky space-witch magic of Lady Jessica and the Bene Gesserit.</p><p>Regardless, "Dune: Part Three" would presumably adapt the next book in the series by Frank Herbert, "<a target="_blank" href="https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Dune_Messiah">Dune: Messiah</a>," which deals with how Paul's holy war has led to the deaths of billions of people across the universe.</p><p>Because of this, other factions try to assassinate Paul to usurp him from his seat of power — much like he did when he murdered the Baron and took over from the Emperor. He's blinded by one of these attacks, and the Fremen's law dictates that any blind person must wander the desert.</p><p>So, Alia takes his place as the new Emperor instead — and she also cares for his children, Leto II and Ghanima, since Chani (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zendaya-dune-part-two-robot-outfit-mugler-divided-internet-2024-2">Zendaya</a>) is also dead by this point. She even starts a relationship with a clone of Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa).</p><p>So there's plenty of plot twists for Taylor-Joy to explore as Alia if "Dune: Part Three" gets off the ground.</p><p>And we've not even mentioned the fact that the ghost of Baron Harkonnen possesses her in the third book, "<a target="_blank" href="https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Children_of_Dune_(novel)">Children of Dune</a>." It stars <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/timothee-chalamet-kylie-jenner-beyonce-relationship-public-2023-9">Timothée Chalamet</a> as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-remake-cast-timothee-chalamet-zendaya-2020-4">Paul Atreides</a>, whose family takes control of the desert planet Arrakis – which is mined for its natural resources that are essential for space travel.</p><p>"<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-part-two-ending-explained-2024-3">Dune: Part Two</a>" arrived in theaters on March 1, to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. At the time of writing, the sequel earned itself a 93% score on <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dune_part_two" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rotten Tomatoes</a>. If the success continues then Villeneuve has already made it clear that he wants to turn the franchise into a trilogy.</p><p>"If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream," Villeneuve told <a href="https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/denis-villeneuve-teases-dune-part-three-dune-messiah-exclusive/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Empire magazine.</a> "'Dune Messiah' was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero. Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation is closer to his idea that it's actually a warning."</p><p>He added that he wouldn't direct any future "Dune" projects following a third movie. "After that, the books become more… Esoteric."</p><p>The good news is that during a "Dune: Part Two" <a href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/denis-villeneuve-dune-3-script-almost-finished-1235829382/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press conference in South Korea</a>, Villeneuve confirmed that the "Dune: Messiah" screenplay is "almost finished." The bad news is that audiences might be waiting a while to return to Arrakis.</p><p>In February, the director told <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/denis-villeneuve-on-dune-part-two-young-people-want-films-to-be-longer-jd0q2rrwp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Times</a>: "There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don't want to rush it." The film ends with Paul killing Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard), and taking over from Emperor Shaddam (Christopher Walken), to become the ruler himself. </p><p>But when "Dune Messiah" starts, the Fremen have transformed themselves into religious extremists, slaughtering 61 billion people across the galaxy in Paul's name. Not exactly a heroic outcome after a full-blown rebellion. That's not to say the Harkonnens were good guys either, but it's interesting that Paul's own journey of self-discovery led to an unthinkable massacre.</p><p>The book is largely about Paul reckoning with the consequences of his own actions, as well his frequent precognitive visions. He also has to deal with the plot to usurp him and his family from the throne.  That also includes his younger sister, Alia — played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who had a cameo role in "Dune: Part Two."</p><p>The Bene Gesserit, the Tleilaxu, and the Space Guild are the ones plotting Emperor Paul's demise. Yes, that sounds like a lot of science-fiction jargon, so let's break it down.</p><p>The Bene Gesserit are essentially space witches, and the Tleilaxu make clones while experimenting with genetics to create people who can store information, like computers. And the Space Guild are the ones who use Spice from Arrakis to expand the minds of its pilots so they can fly ships across the galaxy. Simple enough, right?</p><h2><strong>"Dune 3" would also introduce Paul and Chani's children</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Zendaya as Chani and Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="1346" width="1794" msid="108211565" hostid="261" sizebytes="38704"></div><p>While Paul is married to Princess Irulan, who will be played by Florence Pugh in "Dune: Part Two," their marriage is purely for show. He's actually still in a relationship with Chani, (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zendaya-career-evolution-disney-to-marvel-hollywood-2017-8">Zendaya</a>) who is pregnant.</p><p>Since Paul constantly has prescient visions of the future, he foresees that Chani will give birth to a daughter, but to his surprise, she actually delivers twins. But then she dies in childbirth, because clearly Frank Herbert didn't want any of his characters to be happy. So prepare for a heartbreaking scene between Chalamet and Zendaya when Chani dies in "Dune 3."</p><p>Weirdly, the children are born with some of Paul's supernatural abilities – and are both completely conscious of who they are as soon as they're born.</p><h2><strong>Paul may exile himself to the desert at the end of "Dune 3"</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="1354" width="1805" msid="108211566" hostid="261" sizebytes="64934"></div><p>A key part of the story sees Paul being blinded by an atomic weapon midway through "Dune Messiah," and he relies on his supernatural abilities to see. He's kind of like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/charlie-cox-marvel-daredevil-more-mature-pg-13-rating-challenging-2022-3">Marvel's Daredevil</a>, if Daredevil could also see the future. </p><p>Since Paul can still technically see, the Fremen don't immediately exile him to the desert, as is their tradition. But by the time his children are born and he manages to stop his enemies from taking the throne, he ends up losing his prescient powers, which renders him completely blind. </p><p>Because of this, he's no longer seen as the Fremen's messiah – and he takes himself into the desert, leaving his sister Alia as the new Emperor. Of course, this could all change depending on how Villeneuve and Warner Bros. choose to adapt the book.</p><p>Whatever happens, here's hoping Villeneuve's adaptation would continue to make this complicated sci-fi digestible onscreen — because there's a <em>lot</em> going on.</p>

Gaze upon his striking brow and shining scalp. Is he not gorgeous? Do his gaze and cheekbones not inspire a kind of primal, alluring fear? Is the smoothness of his head not enthrallingly beautiful? Don't just listen to me, listen to Villeneuve.</p><p>"He's probably Giedi Prime's sex symbol," Villeneuve told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/austin-butler-dune-part-two">Vanity Fair</a>, referring to the Harkonnens' home planet. "I was looking for that kind of physical attractiveness. You will see a strong, strong sex appeal in Feyd-Rautha."</p><p>Miraculously, Butler didn't shave his head for the role, due to the fact that he needed hair to film "The Bikeriders" shortly after. His epic baldness is the result of not one, but two bald caps: one to cover his hair, and then a "sculpted cap" that attached at his eyelids, the actor told Vanity Fair. The process took at minimum three hours per day, Butler said on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEgqCXJ5Jk0">Jimmy Kimmel Live</a>.</p><p>That's not even mentioning the fact that Butler's big introduction, an arena fight in honor of Feyd-Rautha's coming-of-age, is the most visually striking sequence in the film. Shot in black and white <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2024/artisans/news/dune-2-shooting-arena-fight-scene-infrared-1235927682/">using an infrared camera</a> to capture the black sun of the Harkonnen home planet, the entire sequence is breathtaking. It also serves to bring out the Harkonnens' most eerie qualities, particularly Butler's sheet-pale skin and void-like mouth.</p><p>You can look at photos of Butler in "Dune: Part Two" all you want. However, Stilgar (Javier Bardem), one of the leaders of the Fremen, sees Paul as the "Lisan al Gaib," the Fremen term for a prophet who will unite all of Arrakis.</p><p>Paul's actions continue to turn the naysayers into believers. Still, his mother, Lady Jessica — who becomes the Reverend Mother after drinking the Water of Life — seals her son's fate.</p><p>After drinking the water, Jessica can now communicate with her unborn daughter. She sets out to convince all in Arrakis that Paul is the messiah. Paul fears a holy war is on the horizon.</p><p>In the movie's thrilling conclusion, Paul drinks the Water of Life, which is supposed to bring death to any man who consumes it. But he survives, fulfilling the prophecy that he's Lisan al Gaib and awakening his senses of the past and future. Drinking the water also reveals to him that the Baron is his Grandfather, while he has a vision of his unborn sister, Alia (Anya Taylor-Joy), all grown up.</p><div type="image" title="Sandworms attacking" height="1213" width="2300" msid="108147063" hostid="261" sizebytes="149314"></div><p>Now having the unified power of the Fremen (and a lot of sandworms), Paul takes on the Emperor (Christopher Walken) and the Baron, who has come to the capitol of Arrakis, Arrakeen, to stop Paul from disrupting their spice mining. Paul easily kills the Baron, then threatens to destroy all the spice on Arrakis unless the Emperor surrenders his throne.</p><p>Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler), the Baron's youngest nephew, steps forward to have a knife duel with Paul as the Emperor's champion. Paul wins, the Emperor relinquishes the throne, and Paul agrees to wed the Emperor's daughter, Irulan (Florence Pugh), to make his rule official.</p><p>Seeing what has just transpired, the other great houses do not accept Paul taking the throne. The holy war Paul always feared would happen is now afoot. He orders Stilgar to have the Fremem board ships and launch a war against the other houses.</p><p>Chani, upset by Paul's actions, especially agreeing to wed Irulan, walks away from Paul and her people and gets on a sandworm; meanwhile, ships carrying Paul's Fremen army take to the sky.</p><div type="image" title="Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler fighting" height="3093" width="5289" msid="108147065" hostid="261" sizebytes="2245650"></div><h2>How the "Dune: Part Two" ending is different from the book</h2><p>"Dune: Part Two" ends similarly to Frank Herbert's original novel, with Paul rallying the Fremen in a battle against the Harkonnen's forces. But there are some differences to highlight.</p><p>The biggest one is that Lady Jessica hasn't given birth to Alia Atreides yet in the film, but in the book, Paul's sister is grown up by the time it comes to fighting the Harkonnens. In fact, Alia is the one who kills Baron Harkonnen using a poisoned needle called a gom jabbar. It's the same weapon the Bene Gesserit used to test Paul before he traveled to Arrakis.</p><p>Since there would need to be a time jump to introduce Alia properly, it's understandable why Villeneuve sidestepped the moment where she killed the Baron. Plus, it keeps the focus on Paul following the reveal that the villain is his Grandfather.</p><p>After the Baron's death, the Emperor picks Feyd Rautha as his champion to duel Paul for the universe's fate. In the book, Feyd attempts to sabotage the fight by trying to poison Paul, but it fails, and Paul kills Feyd by stabbing up through his jaw and through his skull.</p><p>Feyd's death is less brutal in the film, as Paul simply stabs him in the chest, which is way less complicated than trying to add in a poisoning attempt in the name of accuracy.</p><p>Then there's the awkward love triangle of it all. Although Paul tries to assure Chani that he'll always love her, she's humiliated by him when he offers to marry the Emperor's daughter, Princess Irulan.</p><p>In the movie, Chani runs off to ride sandworms in the desert to deal with her heartbreak. This is a little different from the book, where Chani stays by Paul's side as his real partner during his marriage to Irulan. Sure, they might stay together if Villeneuve gets to make "Dune 3," but it could be a while before that happens.</p><div type="image" title="Florence Pugh in &quot;Dune: Part Two.&quot;" height="1050" width="1400" msid="108147067" hostid="261" sizebytes="65542"></div><h2>Denis Villeneuve says he doesn't want to "rush" making "Dune 3"</h2><p>Though it's clear the only way to conclude the "Dune" saga on the big screen is for a third movie to be made, Villeneuve isn't clamoring to make it.</p><p>In late 2023, he said at a <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/denis-villeneuve-dune-3-script-almost-finished-1235829382/">press conference in South Korea</a> that the screenplay for the third movie, which would be based on Herbert's book "Dune Messiah," was "almost finished." So that's good; there seems to be a road map in place already for the conclusion to Paul's story.</p><p>But even if "Dune: Part Two" becomes a box office success, the director will not hustle to close the trilogy.</p><p>"There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don't want to rush it," Villeneuve told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/denis-villeneuve-on-dune-part-two-young-people-want-films-to-be-longer-jd0q2rrwp">The Times</a> earlier this month. "The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality."</p><p>So we'll likely have to wait a while until we see sandworms again.</p>

Breaking down the thrilling ending of 'Dune: Part Two,' and if we'll ever see a third movie

It stars <a href="https://www.insider.com/timothee-chalamet-kylie-jenner-beyonce-relationship-public-2023-9">Timothée Chalamet</a> as <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-cast-timothee-chalamet-zendaya-2020-4">Paul Atreides</a>, whose family takes control of the desert planet Arrakis – which is mined for its natural resources that are essential for space travel.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-2-cast-release-date-what-we-know-2023-2">"Dune: Part Two"</a> has been delayed to March 2024 due to the ongoing writer and actor strikes in Hollywood, but Villeneuve has already made it clear that he wants to turn the franchise into a trilogy.</p><p>"If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream," Villeneuve told <a href="https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/denis-villeneuve-teases-dune-part-three-dune-messiah-exclusive/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Empire magazine.</a> "'Dune Messiah' was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero. Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation is closer to his idea that it's actually a warning."</p><p>He added that he wouldn't direct any future "Dune" projects following a third movie. "Dune" ends with Paul defeating the Emperor of the universe, Shaddam, to become the ruler himself. </p><p>But when "Dune Messiah" starts, the Fremen have transformed themselves into religious extremists, slaughtering 61 billion people across the galaxy in Paul's name. Not exactly a heroic outcome after a full-blown rebellion. That's not to say the Harkonnens were good guys either, but it's interesting that Paul's own journey of self-discovery led to an unthinkable massacre.</p><p>The book is largely about Paul reckoning with the consequences of his own actions, as well his frequent precognitive visions. He also has to deal with the plot to usurp him and his family from the throne. (That also includes his younger sister, Alia, since Jessica was pregnant when the Atreides family was overthrown by House Harkonnen.)</p><p>The Bene Gesserit, the Tleilaxu, and the Space Guild are the ones plotting Emperor Paul's demise. Yes, that sounds like a lot of science-fiction jargon, so let's break it down.</p><p>The Bene Gesserit are essentially space witches, and the Tleilaxu make clones while experimenting with genetics to create people who can store information, like computers. And the Space Guild are the ones who use Spice from Arrakis to expand the minds of its pilots so they can fly ships across the galaxy. Simple enough, right?</p><h2><strong>"Dune 3" would also introduce Paul and Chani's children</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Zendaya as Chani and Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="1346" width="1794" msid="103555120" hostid="261" sizebytes="38704"></div><p>While Paul is married to Princess Irulan, who will be played by Florence Pugh in "Dune: Part Two," their marriage is purely for show. He's actually still in a relationship with Chani, (<a href="https://www.insider.com/zendaya-career-evolution-disney-to-marvel-hollywood-2017-8">Zendaya</a>) who is pregnant.</p><p>Since Paul constantly has prescient visions of the future, he foresees that Chani will give birth to a daughter, but to his surprise, she actually delivers twins. But then she dies in childbirth, because clearly Frank Herbert didn't want any of his characters to be happy. So prepare for a heartbreaking scene between Chalamet and Zendaya when Chani dies in "Dune 3."</p><p>Weirdly, the children are born with some of Paul's supernatural abilities – and are both completely conscious of who they are as soon as they're born.</p><h2><strong>Paul may exile himself to the desert at the end of "Dune 3"</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="1354" width="1805" msid="103555123" hostid="261" sizebytes="64934"></div><p>A key part of the story sees Paul being blinded by an atomic weapon midway through "Dune Messiah," and he relies on his supernatural abilities to see. He's kind of like <a href="https://www.insider.com/charlie-cox-marvel-daredevil-more-mature-pg-13-rating-challenging-2022-3">Marvel's Daredevil</a>, if Daredevil could also see the future. </p><p>Since Paul can still technically see, the Fremen don't immediately exile him to the desert, as is their tradition. But by the time his children are born and he manages to stop his enemies from taking the throne, he ends up losing his prescient powers, which renders him completely blind. </p><p>Because of this, he's no longer seen as the Fremen's messiah – and he takes himself into the desert, leaving his sister Alia as the new Emperor. Of course, this could all change depending on how Villeneuve and Warner Bros. choose to adapt the book.</p><p>Whatever happens, here's hoping Villeneuve's adaptation would continue to make this complicated sci-fi digestible onscreen — because there's a <em>lot</em> going on.</p>

Herbert's novel was previously adapted by David Lynch in a <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-pug-scene-david-lynch-movie-house-atreides-explained-2021-10">controversial 1984 film</a> that starred Kyle MacLachlan, Sting, and Patrick Stewart, among others, and featured a soundtrack by Toto. A 2001 miniseries also attempted to capture Herbert's richly-crafted world.</p><p>Like Herbert's novel and the adaptations before it, Villeneuve's "Dune" follows a young nobleman, <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-cast-timothee-chalamet-zendaya-2020-4">Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet </a><a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-cast-timothee-chalamet-zendaya-2020-4">in Villeneuve's version</a><a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-cast-timothee-chalamet-zendaya-2020-4">)</a>, as he travels with his family from their home planet Caladan to the desert wasteland Arrakis. House Atreides has been instructed to seize control of <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-character-guide-houses-explained-differences-from-novel-2021-10">mining the "spice melange"</a> — an all-important substance that increases awareness and extends the physical life of those who consume it.</p><p>When they arrive on Arrakis, however, they quickly learn that multiple forces have conspired to take the planet away from them, leaving Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), to flee into the open desert and seek the help of the indigenous Fremen people. Paul also comes to realize that he's the Kwisatz Haderach — a long awaited messiah whose coming has been foretold by both Fremen devotees and the powerful Bene Gesserit sisterhood. </p><p>As we've previously said in <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-movie-review-denis-villeneuve-adaptation-frank-herbert-2021-10">our review of the movie</a>, the new film is the only adaptation to really do Herbert's vision justice, while also providing some much-needed updates to the story. Female characters are given more agency in this iteration, and nonwhite actors play some of the film's most crucial roles, although it's worth noting that the lead cast is <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-movie-denis-villeneuve-white-savior-interview-2021-10">still predominantly white</a>, and some elements of Herbert's story are clearly taken from real-life Middle Eastern cultures. </p><p>But despite its flaws, the movie is both visually stunning and emotionally charged, and seems poised to become the <a href="https://www.insider.com/timothe-chalamet-zendaya-dune-is-loud-long-entertaining-2021-9">next great sci-fi franchise</a>. Even smaller, more mundane moments, like a breakfast conversation between Paul and Jessica, instantly transport viewers to the complex, meticulously-crafted world of Villeneuve's "Dune," which provides a welcome break from this year's pandemic-related anxieties.</p><p>In many ways, the film is incredibly escapist, like all good sci-fi movies should be. But at the core of "Dune" is a relatable narrative about finding yourself and coming to terms with your destiny — and even if you're not the Kwisatz Haderach like Paul, I think we've all felt similarly overwhelmed by expectations suddenly thrust upon us. </p><p>"Dune" is the rare film that effortlessly combines magnificent world-building, memorable characters, and a surprisingly relevant storyline into a visual and thematic feast that's a must-watch for casual fans or Herbert aficionados alike. For some, the sci-fi trappings of the story might be off-putting initially, but even the most jaded of viewers can find something to love in Villeneuve's visually stunning and poignant work. </p><p>Anchored by standout performances from Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Jason Momoa, "Dune" is undisputably a masterpiece — and the best film of 2021.</p>

Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration," the saying goes. In David Lynch's 1984 adaptation, it's Paul Atreides who most often utters this prayer. And in Denis Villeneuve's stunning new adaptation, it's Paul's mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) who first says the words onscreen. </p><p>It's a memorable litany for sure (I've personally found myself repeating it in times of stress), and one that applies in more ways than one to the daunting task of adapting an <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-movie-denis-villeneuve-white-savior-interview-2021-10">epic, esoteric work</a> like Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "<keyword id="11975656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dune" source="Orion">Dune</keyword>" into a cohesive film. </p><p>To take on such a gargantuan task, one has to be fearless, able to parse Herbert's dense prose for plot nuggets and hidden meanings without getting bogged down. Villeneuve, along with fellow screenwriters Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth, are up to the task, doing justice to Herbert's vision while facing the pitfalls of previous adaptations head on. </p><p>I'm a superfan of "Dune" - I've devoured the novel, and Lynch's 1984 version has a special place in my heart (shout out to the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj3-Ay6VCX8">House Atreides pug</a>, who is definitely not canon but one of my favorite parts of the film nonetheless).</p><p>But watching Villeneuve's <a href="https://www.insider.com/timothe-chalamet-zendaya-dune-is-loud-long-entertaining-2021-9">incredible adaptation</a> at the New York Film Festival was an entirely different experience. From the mammoth sets that <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CUySLqugFdZ/">stunned even Jason Momoa</a> (who <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-cast-timothee-chalamet-zendaya-2020-4">plays Duncan Idaho</a>) to the fearsome villain Baron Harkonnen (a disturbing Stellan Skarsgård), Villeneuve's "<a href="https://www.hbomax.com/dune/?offer_id=5&amp;transaction_id=102cb42310eb2042076c394043d04c&amp;affiliate_id=1012&amp;aff_click_id=&amp;utm_source=Business+Insider&amp;utm_medium=affiliateutm_medium=affiliate" rel="nofollow sponsored">Dune</a>" gave me chills all the way through. </p><div type="image" title="Timothée Chalamet as Paul and Charlotte Rampling as the Reverend Mother Mohiam in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="2622" width="3496" msid="86992453" hostid="261"></div><h2>The new 'Dune' doesn't stray too far from the novel, but still provides some much needed updates </h2><p>At the core of Herbert's "Dune" (and Lynch's adaptation) is the story of Paul and his journey to becoming the Kwisatz Haderach, a messiah predicted by the mythical Bene Gesserit sisterhood and mythologized by the Fremen people.</p><p>While the new "<a href="https://www.hbomax.com/dune/?offer_id=5&amp;transaction_id=102cb42310eb2042076c394043d04c&amp;affiliate_id=1012&amp;aff_click_id=&amp;utm_source=Business+Insider&amp;utm_medium=affiliateutm_medium=affiliate" rel="nofollow sponsored">Dune</a>" still centers Paul in the narrative, it also gives the women of House Atreides and Arrakis far more agency than previous versions. In both Herbert's novel and Lynch's film, Paul's mother Jessica is described as a "concubine" to Duke Leto who bore a son, despite being ordered by the Bene Gesserit to give birth to a daughter.</p><p>In the new "Dune," however, Jessica's position in the Atreides house isn't described in such dated, subservient terms - instead, she's portrayed a near-equal to Leto, with her standing as a Bene Gesserit witch giving her a great deal of autonomy and power. </p><div type="image" title="Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica and Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="3622" width="4830" msid="86992455" hostid="261"></div><p>Other characters in the new "<a href="https://www.hbomax.com/dune/?offer_id=5&amp;transaction_id=102cb42310eb2042076c394043d04c&amp;affiliate_id=1012&amp;aff_click_id=&amp;utm_source=Business+Insider&amp;utm_medium=affiliateutm_medium=affiliate" rel="nofollow sponsored">Dune</a>" who also received much-needed updates include Chani (Zendaya), a Fremen woman who's shown as a ruthless warrior in her own right and not just Paul's love interest, and Dr. Liet-Kynes, who in previous iterations was male, but is played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster in Villeneuve's version. </p><p>As a longtime fan, it was great to see some of the novel's female characters finally getting their due, and being afforded more status than a love interest for or accessory to the story's men. I also appreciated the decision to cast Zendaya and Duncan-Brewster, both women of color, for two of the film's most prominent roles. </p><p>And in a departure from Lynch's adaptation, the villainous and scheming Harkonnens are actually terrifying in the new "Dune." Stellan Skarsgård and Dave Bautista each give memorable performances as <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-stellan-skarsgard-baron-harkonnen-makeup-2021-4">Baron Harkonnen</a> and his nephew Glossu Rabban, respectively, and even the Baron's signature way of floating above the ground is more menacing and less campy than in previous versions. </p><div type="image" title="Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="1715" width="2287" msid="86992457" hostid="261"></div><h2>By splitting the film into two parts, Villeneuve avoids the mistakes of other adaptations</h2><p>One of the downfalls of Lynch's adaptation is that it attempts to cram all of Herbert's 400-page novel into a two-hour film. </p><p>Villeneuve's "<a href="https://www.hbomax.com/dune/?offer_id=5&amp;transaction_id=102cb42310eb2042076c394043d04c&amp;affiliate_id=1012&amp;aff_click_id=&amp;utm_source=Business+Insider&amp;utm_medium=affiliateutm_medium=affiliate">Dune</a>" does clock in at around two and a half hours, but he wisely decided to split the narrative into two parts, which means the ending of his version takes place about halfway through the novel. The sequel, which has <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2021/08/denis-villenueve-optimistic-dune-2-gets-made-1234658549/">unfortunately yet to be confirmed</a>, will most likely follow the second half of the book. </p><p>If you're not familiar with the novel, the ending to Villeneuve's film will likely seem abrupt. But as a diehard fan, I loved being able to spend more time with the characters, instead of rushing through Herbert's sprawling, multilayered narrative to hit certain plot points.</p><p>The world of "Dune" is complex, with Fremen and Bene Gesserit mythologies taking some getting used to, not to mention the interplanetary politics at play. But by splitting the film into two, Villeneuve is able to pay greater attention to the intricacies of Herbert's world - and actually takes time to develop his characters into multifaceted individuals.  </p><p>Unlike other adaptations, the new "<a href="https://www.hbomax.com/dune/?offer_id=5&amp;transaction_id=102cb42310eb2042076c394043d04c&amp;affiliate_id=1012&amp;aff_click_id=&amp;utm_source=Business+Insider&amp;utm_medium=affiliateutm_medium=affiliate" rel="nofollow sponsored">Dune</a>" completely immerses you in the story, making Paul's journey and the conflict over Arrakis all the more engaging. </p><div type="image" title="Timothée Chalamet as Paul and Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="3942" width="5256" msid="86992458" hostid="261"></div><h2>Villeneuve's film is also visually breathtaking </h2><p>There were numerous moments during the new "<a href="https://www.hbomax.com/dune/?offer_id=5&amp;transaction_id=102cb42310eb2042076c394043d04c&amp;affiliate_id=1012&amp;aff_click_id=&amp;utm_source=Business+Insider&amp;utm_medium=affiliateutm_medium=affiliate" rel="nofollow sponsored">Dune</a>" that gave me goosebumps, and most of them occurred because of the film's dedication to portraying Arrakis and the Atreides' home planet of Caladan in stunning detail.</p><p>On Caladan, there are gorgeous shots of Paul walking along a misty beach or visiting graves with his father on a desolate hill.</p><p>But the real magic happens when the Atreides family first steps foot on Arrakis. Legions of soldiers and Fremen arrive to greet them, although the true standout of that scene is the vast, sandy desert that extends as far as the eye can see. As Paul, Jessica, and Leto adjust to their new home, you can almost feel the scorching heat and sand beneath your feet. </p><div type="image" title="The battle between House Atreides and the Harkonnens in &quot;Dune.&quot;" height="1716" width="4096" msid="86992459" hostid="261"></div><p>I was also stunned by film's brutal battle scene, when the Harkonnens and imperial soldiers massacre the Atreides forces. It'd likely be an enjoyable watch at home, but the film's sweeping sets, epic battle scenes, and thrilling one-on-one action sequences were made to be seen in a theater (and it's also worth noting that <a href="https://www.insider.com/denis-villeneuve-slams-warner-bros-dune-streaming-plans-hbo-max-2020-12">Villeneuve wants people to see it in on the big screen, too</a>). </p><p>It's rare to feel so satisfied after seeing a film adaptation of a novel (especially when <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2020/04/david-lynch-zero-interest-villeneuve-dune-1202225984/">past versions have been so fraught with difficulty</a>), but the new "Dune" is everything I had hoped for - and more. </p><p>Even if you're not a superfan like I am, you won't want to miss this.</p>

Now, another adaptation - <a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-cast-timothee-chalamet-zendaya-2020-4">starring</a> Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, and more - is set to premiere in October. </p><p>Longtime fans of the "Dune" novels and the (admittedly campy) 1984 adaptation are excited to see how <a href="https://www.insider.com/denis-villeneuve-slams-warner-bros-dune-streaming-plans-hbo-max-2020-12">director Denis Villeneuve</a> brings this iconic story to life in his upcoming film. </p><p>And while "Dune" isn't a perfect story, here's why you shouldn't overlook this awe-inspiring and enthralling epic. </p><h2>'Dune' focuses on the Atreides family as they try to survive on a new hostile planet </h2><p>The Atreides family are the rulers of the ocean planet Caladan, and "Dune" begins with patriarch Duke Leto (Isaac) receiving an assignment from the Emperor to relocate to Arrakis - a dangerous desert planet. </p><p>Once on Arrakis, Leto and the rest of his family take over mining of melange, or "spice," a mysterious substance that prolongs human life and enhances cognitive abilities.</p><p>Joining the Atreides on Arrakis are Duncan Idaho (Momoa) and Gurney Hallack (Brolin), two fierce fighters helping to train Leto's son Paul (Chalamet) in battle. </p><p>But unfortunately for the Atreides family, they're betrayed by one of their own soon after their arrival on Arrakis, and Paul and his mother, the Bene Gesserit witch Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) are left to fend for themselves. </p><p>Eventually, Paul and Jessica come into contact with the Fremen, a group of people native to Arrakis. Paul learns more about his heritage and psychic abilities, and even meets his love interest, a Fremen woman named Chani (Zendaya.) </p><p>The remaining members of the Atreides family soon join forces with the Fremen to take back Arrakis and avenge their family. </p><div type="image" title="dune timothee chalamet rebecca ferguson" height="1334" width="1778" msid="78029028" hostid="261"></div><h2>Understanding the planets, customs, and people of 'Dune' can be daunting, but at its core, it's a coming-of-age story</h2><p>Bene Genneserits, the Kwisatz Haderach, gom jabbars, and Arrakis - much like any sci-fi story, the names of people and places in "Dune" can take some getting used to.</p><p>There are also complicated interplanetary politics at play involving House Atreides, their rivals the Harkonnens, and the Padishah Emperor Shaddam. </p><p>But at the center of "Dune" is a coming-of-age story involving Paul, the young son of Duke Leto who's forced to fight for his life and his family after a terrible betrayal on Arrakis. </p><p>Throughout "Dune," Paul grows from a naive young nobleman into the all-powerful Kwisatz Haderach - the messiah of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood who's thought to see both the future and the past. Along the way, he also meets his love interest, Chani, and becomes a skilled fighter and soldier, even planning revenge on the Harkonnens. </p><p>Strip away the sci-fi trappings, and "Dune" is just a classic coming-of-age story - albeit one set on a distant planet in the future. </p><div type="image" title="zendaya chani dune" height="1200" width="1600" msid="78029030" hostid="261"></div><h2>While the 1984 adaptation was definitely entertaining, this adaptation seems better suited to Herbert's original vision</h2><p>There's a lot to unpack in David Lynch's 1984 adaptation.</p><p>Starring Sting, Kyle MacLachlan (of "Twin Peaks" fame), Patrick Stewart, and Max von Sydow, among others, the movie was a commercial and critical failure that was subsequently disowned by Lynch. </p><p>But for true "Dune" fans, the movie is still worth a watch, if only for the '80s-appropriate soundtrack by Toto and the inclusion of the <a href="http://www.moviefanfare.com/?p=50679">Atreides' pug that's never explicitly mentioned in the book</a>, yet somehow included in key scenes in the movie. </p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CnuaXR933mA" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Despite the endearing parts of the <a href="https://www.insider.com/1980s-movies-remakes-reboots-upcoming">1984 version</a>, Villeneuve's adaptation seems like a much more accurate representation of Herbert's sprawling, dense novel. </p><p>For starters, the new "Dune" wisely focuses on the first half of the novel, meaning that there will hopefully be more exposition and character development than in Lynch's jam-packed version. </p><p>There also seems to be a marked shift in tone - while Lynch's film was (unintentionally) campy and featured a buffoonish villain, Villeneuve's adaptation seems darker and sleeker, with an antagonist (<a href="https://www.insider.com/dune-remake-stellan-skarsgard-baron-harkonnen-makeup-2021-4">Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Harkonnen</a>) to match. </p><p>While some fans may always have a soft spot for David Lynch's fantastical reimagining of Herbert's novel, if the new trailer is any indication, Villeneuve seems like he's truly done right by the unforgettable epic. </p><div type="image" title="jason momoa dune" height="1142" width="1523" msid="78029032" hostid="261"></div><h2>The star-studded cast will also make it worth a watch, too</h2><p>Chalamet was a brilliant casting decision for the role of Paul. The movies will be available on HBO Max for one month, after which they'll leave the streamer and continue to play in theaters.</p><p>While the plan is only for 2021 (for now), it could have major and permanent ramifications for Hollywood.</p><p>The theatrical window, which has typically been 75 days before a movie can debut on digital or streaming, has shortened during the pandemic. Some movies have skipped theaters entirely this year for video-on-demand and streaming services, and Universal Pictures has struck deals with several major chains to dramatically shorten the window for future releases.</p><p>But the announcement from Warner Bros. is a big evolution in these strategies. The studio had committed to theaters just three months ago when it debuted Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" in cinemas. Major chains like Regal and Cineworld are closed in the US and UK, and it's unclear when they'll reopen.</p><p>Theater stocks took a nosedive on Thursday after the announcement. AMC, the largest theater chain, was down 8% after the announcement.</p><p>However, studios make most of their box-office revenue internationally, and Warner Bros. movies will release exclusively in theaters outside the US as intended next year. In 2019, the studio earned $2.85 billion from international markets compared with $1.58 billion domestically.</p><p>The move is also a sign that WarnerMedia is looking to boost subscribers for HBO Max, which has struggled to convert those who are already HBO customers.</p><p>The service has yet to strike a deal with Roku, one of the largest streaming-distribution platforms, and Variety's Todd Spangler <a href="https://twitter.com/xpangler/status/1334566313419825153?s=21">tweeted</a> on Thursday that the strategy could pressure Roku into making a deal.</p><p>WarnerMedia has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-warnermedia-layoffs-and-future-of-cnn-hbo-max-2020-11">undergone a heavy shake-up this year under its new CEO, Jason Kilar</a>, that includes hundreds of layoffs and a focus on its streaming business. In August, after WarnerMedia <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="entertainment">Entertainment</keyword> and Direct-To-Consumer Chairman Bob Greenblatt and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly were axed, Warner Bros.
