Instead of a mere paint job, Harley-Davidson will enter the e-bike market with something completely new. The manufacturer's e-bike program plans to launch four models this spring, but they aren't Harleys at all. <a href="https://www.serial1.com/">Serial 1 Cycle Company</a> began as a skunkworks project within Harley-Davidson and broke off into its own independent firm earlier this year, launching with the full spectrum of support from Harley: a space on its Milwaukee campus, a minority stake, an engineering and development partnership, and a name that pays homage to its very first motorcycle. <div type="image" title="Serial 1 2" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79815060" hostid="261"></div>"We joke that we're the startup working out of its parents' basement," Serial 1 brand director Aaron Frank told Business Insider. But the kind of living situation that may be a headache for a recent college grad is a boon for the upstart bike manufacturer, as it gets access to resources and manufacturing know-how from a larger and more established company. The brand is staffed in part by former Harley engineers, has access to its testing and development facilities, and gets the same battery technology as the LiveWire electric motorcycle, to name a few perks. <div type="image" title="Serial 1 15" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79815062" hostid="261"></div>The result of that partnership is an initial lineup of commuter e-bikes that are built well, incorporate tons of high-end and custom-designed components, show extraordinary attention to detail, and deliver a smooth and balanced ride.<h2>Four e-bikes, averaging around $4,000</h2>Serial 1 will launch with four bikes: the entry-level $3,399 Mosh/Cty along with three Rush/Cty models that range in price from $4,399 to $4,999. The brand invited me out to Brooklyn to test out the Mosh/Cty and the range-topping Rush/Cty Speed. <div type="image" title="Serial 1 9" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79815064" hostid="261"></div>All the models share lots of high-end features and components, and the philosophy behind many of the design choices was to let buyers - who, market research says, typically are new to biking - "just put air in the tires and go," Frank said. They use a belt drive instead of a conventional chain, which means not only a quiet ride and no more black grease stains on your pant legs, but it also eliminates the need to clean, lubricate, or replace a chain. The bikes also have hydraulic disc brakes - with no potential for cable slack - along with cables that are routed through the handlebars and frame, which makes for a sleek look and cuts down on the possibility of anything getting snagged. <div type="image" title="Serial 1 3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79815066" hostid="261"></div>Some other nice touches: Serial 1 bikes come with a light integrated into the front badge, a headlight mounted to the handlebars, and brake lights embedded in the back of the frame. Rush/Cty models come equipped with front and rear racks, while the Mosh/Cty has mounts for them. As for the drivetrain, each bike comes with the same mid-drive 250-watt Brose motor that delivers four levels of pedal assist. The top half of the model range comes with 706-Wh batteries while the bottom half comes with 529-Wh packs, but the batteries are interchangeable between models.The key difference between the Mosh and Rush models is that the former has a single speed, while the latter make use of an Enviolo NuVinci automatic transmission.The bikes are available to <a href="https://www.serial1.com/">preorder</a> now, with deliveries starting in spring 2021. If commuter bikes aren't quite your style, Serial 1 plans to expand into other types of e-bikes after the launch of the Cty lineup.<h2>The riding experience</h2>Whipping Serial 1's bikes around the bends and up the steep hills of Brooklyn's Prospect Park on a brisk, sunny December day was a blast, and not just by "I've been locked up in quarantine for nine months" standards. The motorized bikes let me effortlessly do things I couldn't do on a regular bike - zip by Spandex-wearing cyclists, hit nearly 30 mph on flats, and easily power up climbs that would normally leave me winded - but they didn't take away from the joy and the connected feeling you get when riding a non-electric bike. Serial 1 bikes don't have a throttle, and - whereas many electric bikes provide pedal assistance based on pedal cadence or wheel speed - the Brose motor uses a torque sensor and puts out power to match the effort a rider is putting in. Power comes on instantly and naturally; the harder you pedal, the more assistance you get. <div type="image" title="Serial 1 16" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79815068" hostid="261"></div>The combination of a mid-drive motor between the pedals and a custom battery that slots in low on the frame - instead of being mounted up high like on some other e-bikes - gives Serial 1's bikes a super low center of gravity and makes them remarkably nimble. The bikes feel balanced and planted even at the Speed version's top speed of 28 mph - and I eagerly pushed the bikes' limits by carving corners at speed.Frank said Serial 1's engineers made "mass centralization," a core tenet of motorcycle design, a top priority. They also developed Serial 1's frames to the same rigidity standards as Harley's motorcycles.You might think all that Harley influence would produce bikes that ride like motorcycles, but - due to their balanced ride, natural-feeling motor, and comfortable upright riding position - cruising around on a Serial 1 e-bike feels surprisingly similar to riding a regular bike, even with all the added weight and tech. <div type="image" title="Serial 1 4" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79815070" hostid="261"></div>The Mosh/Cty is engineered so it's easy to get going from a stop, and the lack of gears doesn't pose much of an issue for hills when you have an electric motor picking up the slack. But the assisted top speed of 20 mph doesn't come easily - in order to hit it, you'll need to pedal quickly.The automatic transmission found in the Rush models really steps the ride quality up. All you do is set your preferred pedaling speed through a companion app and the transmission constantly - almost imperceptibly - reacts to keep you in the right gear.<div type="image" title="Serial 1 6" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79815073" hostid="261"></div>The torque-sensing motor plus the continuously variable transmission means all you have to do is choose a pedal-assist level, and the bike smoothly takes care of everything else. <h2>A break from the norm</h2>It would have been much more straightforward - and probably a whole lot cheaper - for Harley-Davidson to cash in on the e-bike boom by licensing out its name or cobbling together a bike from off-the-shelf parts. But Serial 1, with Harley's financial backing and support, has created something worlds better than that. Having ridden solid e-bikes that cost less than half the price of Serial 1's cheapest offering, I came in thinking that the $3,000 to $5,000 e-bikes might be overpriced due to their Harley-Davidson affiliation. But Serial 1 isn't competing with those budget-friendly or mid-market products, and it offers a lot more than just a "Powered by Harley-Davidson" label emblazoned on its frames. Its price tags and components are in line with what you'd find from the high-end e-bike makers it's gunning for, like Trek, Specialized, and Giant, plus it benefits from wearing the Harley badge - something those brands can't say.The Rush/Cty and Mosh/Cty make it clear that Harley-Davidson and Serial 1 are in it for the long haul, and they bring heaps more to the table than some of the badge-slap bikes on the market today. For Harley, that was the goal from the start."People have expectations from the Harley-Davidson brand in terms of quality and execution and design and styling and originality, and all of that stuff is very important to us," Frank said. "We're taking this space very, very seriously."

Matthew DeBord/BII'm a hippie and a hipster.I recently took a short vacation to Bologna, Italy and while I was there I spent some time at the Ducati factory and museum.Ducati is a very old motorcycle brand, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Bologna for its entire history. In recent years, the company has gained renown for its so-called "naked" bikes, mainly the Ducati Monster, which was rolled out in 1993 and has achieved widespread popularity (it has an open trellis frame that exposes its unique desmodromic v-twin engine).Ducati is also well-known for its aggressive superbikes, such as the Panigale - often called the "Ferrari" of motorcycles.But it's biggest hit of late is a reboot of a motorcycle that it first built back in the early 1960s and discontinued in the early 1970s. It was called the "Scrambler," and Ducati resumed making it, with a completely different level of technology and much more horsepower, in 2015.Matthew DeBord/BIAwesome bike.I was a big fan of the Monster, but the Scrambler is really just about my favorite bike on the road right now. For Ducati, it gives the brand a bike to put against some of the revived "cafe racers" that have been produced by the likes of Triumph and even Harley-Davidson, which is famous for its hulking cruisers.Triumph's bikes are pure hipster, but the Scrambler nods at a subset of hipsterdom: riders who want to tackle the road and the trail. In this sense, they probably would have appealed to somebody like Steve McQueen, a motorsport nut who <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=kSkDAAAAMBAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">actually sampled a whole bunch of dirt bikes for Popular Mechanics in 1966</a>.The original Ducati Scrambler wasn't on his docket, but it should have been.Ducati made the original Scrambler for the US market, and if a photo I snapped while I was at the museum is any indication, it was a bike beloved by counterculturalists:Matthew DeBord/BIDucati hippies.I'm not sure if the new Ducati is similarly pitched; the target market seems to be especially chic hipsters. In fact, the Scrambler has been so successful that rather than allow it to exist as a single model in the overall Ducati lineup, the company has turned it into a standalone brand selling a variety of different bikes.From a business standpoint, this shows a pretty bold pivot for Ducati. The bike maker is now appealing to several different markets, uniting them with its high-end, design-and-engineering-driven DNA. As I learned when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/2016-new-york-motorcycle-show-2016-12">I stopped by the New York Motorcycle Show last year</a>, American bikers are now absolutely spoiled for choice. There are far more great, modern motorcycles now than there were when I was growing up. Back then, it was essentially cruisers and sport bikes; if you wanted something different, you had to scour the vintage realms. Nowadays, kickstarting is a thing of past and all these retro-bikes are outfitted with state of the art tech. But as in the case of the Scrambler, they haven't lost their spirit. The bikes of the 1960s and '70s may have appealed to hippies, but there aren't that many of those folks around these days. The Ducati Scrambler was a bike for hippies - but now it's a motorcycle for hipsters

And this is the time of year that the two-wheelers pull into New York City in force.Running through the weekend, the New York Motorcycle Show is at the Javits Center on Manhattan's West Side.We took it all in last year and came back for more in 2017. There were a few trends. One as the notable absence of Ducati, on of the world's major bike brands. Another was the ongoing roll-out of stylish throwback bikes, typified by the expansion of Royal Enfield outside its home market on India and setting up shop in the US.<h2>Check out all the cool sights:</h2>

Known for its line up of exotically styled, high performance motorcycles, Ducati has certainly captured the imagination of American consumers with 14% sales growth in 2015.In fact, the US is Ducati's top market - ahead of its homeland of Italy. The man in charge of the historic Italian marque in the US is Ducati North America CEO Jason Chinnock.Chinnock, a long-time Ducati-guy, rejoined Ducati North America as CEO in January after a couple of years at fellow Audi-owned brand Lamborghini.Recently, Chinnock spoke with Business Insider about the Ducati and his career in the motorcycle and automotive industries. <h2>On what Ducati stands for</h2>According to Chinnock, the Ducati brand stands for three things: style, sophistication, and performance."When someone sees a Ducati, it must be unmistakably a Ducati," Chinnock said about the style conveyed by his company's bikes.As for sophistication, Chinnock believes Ducatis are more than just an engine, two wheels, and a seat. "It's about the engineering and the technology that allows riders have a great experience," Chinnock said. And then there's performance. It's the element for which Ducati is most famous."The brand is rooted in racing and performance is something that comes quite naturally to us," he said. "Our aim is to build an emotional connection between the motorcycle and rider."<h2>On where Ducati is headed</h2>While Ducati is best known for its sport and super bikes, the legendary Italian marque is set to explore a different segment of the market."The cruiser market is new to us, but it's the single largest market opportunity for us in North America," the chief executive said.According to Chinnock, the cruiser market represents around 115,000 bikes annually and the brand would be very pleased with just one or two percent of that pie. While cruisers aren't necessarily known for the kind of fire-breathing performance synonymous with Ducati, Chinnock assured us that the new XDiavel "doesn't compromise the company's performance reputation."<h2>On his time at Lamborghini</h2>In 2013, Chinnock left his position as Ducati North America's sales and marketing development director to become a marketing manager at Lamborghini. He spent nearly three years at the supercar maker before returning to Ducati.The executive told us that his time at Lamborghini was time well spent. "I picked up the automotive industry's attention to detail and high level of professionalism," Chinnock told us. "In addition, it also allowed me to view Ducati more from the perspective of a consumer and gather new ideas for how to elevate the brand."<h2>On his time in the US Army</h2>After graduating from Colorado State University, Chinnock served as a tank pilot in the US Army. According to Chinnock, his time in the Army instilled within him an added sense of discipline and team focus.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">DucatiDucati XDiavel.</div></div></div>"It was an invaluable experience for someone between the age of 18-21," he told us. "It helped me mold my drive and determination with an understanding that there was a whole world out there and that I could do anything I set my mind to."<h2>On the possibility of an electric Ducati</h2>A couple of years ago, Harley-Davidson unveiled an electric motorcycle called the Project LiveWire. But Ducati isn't quite ready to jump on that bandwagon yet. Ducati is making a major change that could transform its business

The floor at the Javits Center on Manhattan's West Side was crammed with all manner of two-wheeled delights (as well as some three- and four-wheeled attractions).All the major players were represented. We had big ole hogs from Harley-Davidson, cool flat-track racers from Indian, style machines from Triumph, Ducati, and Aprilia, and some flash new bikes from Royal Enfield, the freshest brand to hit the US market.Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki also showcased their wide range of bikes, ATVs, and of course, JetSkis. I also sampled helmets, riding gear, and even tires!Let's have a look.

New York, Do you find drinking <keyword id="6359858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="alcohol">alcohol</keyword> pleasurable? If so, you are more likely to develop an alcohol use disorder (AUD), a <keyword id="1243099" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-study">new study</keyword> suggests. The findings, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, indicate that individuals developing an AUD are more likely to be sensitized to the <keyword id="79322" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="effects">effects</keyword> of alcohol -- that is, they experience a stronger positive <keyword id="61262" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="response">response</keyword> -- rather than habituated to the substance with a lower level of response. "These pleasurable alcohol effects grow in intensity over time, and do not dissipate, in people progressing in excessive drinking," said lead author Andrea King, Professor at the University of Chicago in the US. "This tells us that having a higher sensitivity to the rewarding effects of alcohol in the brain puts such individuals at higher risk for developing an addiction," King added. For the study, the team followed a cohort of 190 young adults in a laboratory-based binge drinking scenario at three regular intervals over the course of 10 years.When retested on their responses 10 years later, those who became alcoholics had the highest levels of alcohol stimulation, liking and wanting - and these were heightened compared to their baseline with no signs of tolerance to these pleasurable effects. The study showed that higher sensitivity to the euphoric and rewarding effects of alcohol can predict who will go on to have an AUD as they progress through their 20s and 30s. "Our results support a theory called incentive-sensitization," said King. "In response to a standard intoxicating dose of alcohol in the laboratory, ratings of wanting more alcohol increased substantially over the decade among the individuals who developed more severe AUD. Additionally, the hedonic response -- essentially, how much a person liked the effects -- remained elevated over this interval and didn't go down at all. This has traditionally been the crux of the lore of addiction -- that addicts don't like the drug (alcohol) but can't stop using it," King added. Enjoy alcohol? A new study says it could lead to liquor related disorder

The overall hiring at year-on-year level showed a decline of only 10% in December, according to <keyword id="218117" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naukri-com">Naukri.com</keyword> 'JobSpeak' report. The hiring in the insurance sector grew by more that 45% in December, as Indians felt the need for securing their health and businesses in the post-Covid era. The auto and ancillary sector (33 per cent) continued to register <keyword id="42546" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Growth">growth</keyword> in sequential hiring with increased consumer demand during the year-end period. Other key sectors such as BFSI (+18%), Pharma/Biotech (+28%), FMCG (+21%) and IT-Software (+11%) too have shown positive growth in hiring. "Key sectors like hospitality, travel, auto and retail are still bouncing back, and the sequential numbers reassure us of robust recoveries in 2021," said Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com. "As we look forward to a brighter year ahead, the overall hiring sets in the right direction for the closing month." Within metros, Pune and Delhi led the sequential recovery at more than 18% and 16% increase in hiring, respectively, followed by Kolkata (+14%) and Mumbai (+10%). Coimbatore saw the highest hiring growth of +30% among Tier-2 cities, followed by Ahmedabad at +20% and Jaipur at +15% in December. In fact, hiring of professionals in the hotels/restaurants domain also saw an uptick of 13% sequentially, indicating the revival of the sector. Hiring activity in the month of December declined by 10% vs the last year, the findings showed. While Bengaluru (-1%), Pune (-2%), and Hyderabad (-5%) were less impacted given the growing demand for IT professionals in the virtually connected world, cities such as Mumbai (-25%) and Delhi (-18%) saw a decline in hiring activity in December as compared to the same month last year. "Of the great motorcycles available in 2016, the Triumph Street Twin delivers on all of its promises - attractive looks, comfort, electronic rider aids and strong performance, all at an amazingly reasonable price.
