<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Jim Young</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><br /><br /></p><ul><li><strong><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/HOG-Quote">Harley-Davidson's</a> CEO said Tuesday that an electric motorcycle will be arriving in 18 months.</strong></li><li><strong>The announcement happened after poor Q4 2017 earnings.</strong></li><li><strong>Harley rolled out an electric concept bike four years ago, but didn't follow it up with a production two-wheeler.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Harley-Davidson got the biking world pretty excited in 2014 when it rolled out the LiveWire electric concept. But a concept was what it remained, although over the years the company dropped some hints that it might, maybe, possibly take the plunge.</p><p>According to CEO <span>Matthew Levatich, the electric hog will hit the streets in less than two years.</span></p><p>"The EV market is in its infancy today and we believe it will drive excitement into our sport globally in both traditional and nontraditional spaces," he said on a conference call with analysts, <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/harley-davidson-stock-price-earnings-is-plummeting-after-a-big-miss-2018-1-1014576275">following Harley's reporting of weak fourth-quarter, alongside full-year 2017, earnings</a>.</p><p>"You've heard us talk about Project LiveWire," he added. "LiveWire is an exhilarating, no excuses, electric Harley-Davidson. Over 12,000 riders told us so through the demo rides we provided around the world and it's an active project we're preparing to bring to market within 18 months."</p><p>The overall motorcycle market is facing some headwinds in the coming years. Sales have recovered in the US since the financial crisis, but they're less than half what they were when peak bike hit, back in 2016 with 1.6 million two-wheelers sold. The industry is struggling to attract new riders, despite an onslaught of smaller, less-intimidating machines from Ducati, Honda, and even Harley, which for decades has been king of the road with its hulking cruisers.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Markets Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>An aging customer isn't a bad thing: he or she can afford Harley's expensive, profitable bikes. But eventually, they'll age into that great biker bar in the sky. </p><p>Electric motorcycles are promising both because they hold futuristic appeal and aren't as challenging to learn to ride as traditional bikes, with tricky clutches and big, loud rumbling motors. Best of all, electric bikes are plenty fast.</p><p>There could be something else going on as well for Harley. Fourth-quarter earnings weren't great, and they sent the stock into a swoon on Tuesday. The markets haven't been kind to HOG; over the past 12 months, shares are down over 12%, lagging the broader exchanges. </p><p>Harley's challenges are well understood, so some futuristic position is certainly called for from management. Harley-Davidson says it will launch an electric motorcycle in 2019

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="japan">Japan</keyword>'s legendary <keyword id="796285" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Suzuka">Suzuka</keyword> Circuit easily ranks as the country's most dangerous race track.</li><li>The figure eight-shaped course features high-speed corners only meant for the world's top racers.</li><li>We had several of the champion <keyword id="6382597" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="superbike">superbike</keyword> racers explain what makes Suzuka such a difficult track to master.</li></ul><ul class="summary-list"></ul><p><em style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Times, sans-serif;">Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Erratic blind corners, limited run-off areas, speeds upwards of 200 mph. These are just a few of the features that make Japan's legendary Suzuka Circuit the country's most dangerous race track. In its 58-year history, the 3.6-mile track has claimed the lives of 17 professional racers. But competitors continue flocking there, for some of the world's biggest motor sport events. Between the track's overly complicated design, famously high risk corners and unpredictable weather, Suzuka can make for some terrifying races.</p><p>The first thing race car drivers and motorcyclists notice about the track is its design. Take a bird's-eye view of the track and you'll notice its hard-to-follow figure 8 layout. Compared to the simple ovals and basic road courses most racers are used to, Suzuka's design is one of utter chaos. Complicating the track further are a total of 18 different corners. Most of which are blind.</p><p><strong>Alex Lowes:</strong> It's a figure-of-8 track, but when you ride it, it's so complicated and technical, it doesn't feel like just a nice and simple figure-of-8 track, so it's really hard to get your bearings. The first, maybe two, three, four days that I was riding there, I couldn't really work out where I was. I couldn't work it out, cause there just seemed to be corners everywhere.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> The corners vary in speeds from as slow as 40 mph to as fast as 190. They cause the track to change at a moment's notice. Like the intense Degner Curves, that include a sudden 90 degree right-hander at Turn 9. Or the abrupt chicane following the fastest section of the track that racers frequently prepare for too late. These intense corners lead to drivers encountering a high level of lateral g-forces on their body, the highest being up to 3.5 at the notorious 130 R turn.</p><p>Lateral g-force, is the gravitational force applied to a vehicle as it rounds a curve. It's the push you feel while turning, that tries to force you off the road. But Suzuka also has a total elevation change of over 40 meters, forcing racers to struggle with both lateral and vertical g-forces pressing on their bodies throughout. On a course with a limited number of tarmac runoff areas, this means one wrong move with your car or bike can send you sliding into a patch of gravel or worse, a wall.</p><p><strong>Niccolò Canepa:</strong> I'm inside of the FIM safety board. This is one of the most dangerous in the championship. It's kind of a roller coaster. When I ride there, I have huge respect for the track and sometimes some extra attention. Some corners you feel like the walls are really close because of the speed. You go so fast in some corners, I don't wanna think about what can happen, you know.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Suzuka was originally built as a Honda test track back in 1962, which explains its harrowing layout that most likely couldn't pass today's standards. And because it's older, the pavement is, well old, making it rougher than more refined modern tracks. This can lead to quicker degradation and overheating of the tires.</p><p><strong>Alex:</strong> So, it's obviously fantastic cause you got a lot of grip, and you can really push the bike. The problem is if you have to do a lot of laps, the tires wear a lot, and then you start to slide, and the bike starts to move and becomes difficult to ride.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Suzuka also has some incredibly tight sections, some of the tightest being only 10 meters wide. On par with Belgium's Spa-Francorpchamps, and Germany's Nürburgring, these tight stretches make it tough for one driver to pass another.</p><p><strong>Niccolò:</strong> If you want to fight for the victory, if you want to fight for the top five, you have to overtake all the time somebody. Every lap you have to overtake somebody, and sometimes it's really challenging because the track is narrow and it's not so easy. So, you have to take some bigger risks sometimes.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> But while the track's overall design causes enough problems for racers, Suzuka is most famous for the previously mentioned 130 R corner. Originally named for it's 130-meter radius, the infamous turn takes place on the bridge that overlaps the course. Racers take this intense left corner as fast as 190 mph. Statistics like that have placed it amongst <keyword id="6360432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="RACING">racing</keyword>'s most intimidating corners. And if you're racing in the annual eight hours of Suzuka superbike race, you're encountering that corner over and over and over again.</p><p><strong>Niccolò:</strong> That corner is an amazing corner, and it's really difficult to find actually a good braking point at 300 kph. So it's really something that you hold your breath during that corner, at every lap for eight hours.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Over the years, the turn has been forced to undergo a number of changes to its layout. After Formula 1 driver Allan McNish's violent crash in 2002 at the turn's approaching bump, 130 R was redesigned as a double-apex, one with an 85-meter radius and a second featuring a 340-meter radius. However, this led to 130 R's following Casio triangle chicane, being closer. This closer chicane would be the site of <keyword id="6359451" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="motorcycle">motorcycle</keyword> rider Daijiro Kato's fatal accident in 2003, at the Casio's more sudden braking zone. Since then, the MotoGP racing series has not returned to Suzuka.</p><p>As intense as 130 R is though, Suzuka is a roller coaster from the start, as the track's first turn leads directly into a section known as the Snake curves, a series of back-to-back winding corners that makes up Turns 3 to 6, and allowing racers to reach speeds as much as 130 mph while twisting through. But it's the technical racing required for this section that is most challenging. Just last year, it was the scene of a very embarrassing crash for racer Tetsuta Nagashima during only a warmup lap.</p><p>The section calls for four perfectly rhythmic turns, one after the other. Too much speed or failing to stay on line going into your first turn, and you destroy your following three, either losing significant lap time or flying of the track.</p><p><strong>Niccolò:</strong> With the Formula 1 car, they almost go flat out around there, but with a motorcycle it's really really difficult and you have to be really precise.</p><p><strong>Jonathan Rea:</strong> It's physically demanding because you need your bike to be quick turning. Physically you have to manhandle the bike from your left to right to left to right. It just goes past in the blink of an eye because you're just focused on apex to apex.</p><p><strong>Alex:</strong> After Turn 1 all the way to Turn 6, you need to be really patient if you're behind somebody cause it's pretty much one line. So, if you're gonna try and pass there, you need to make sure you're really aggressive. Probably wouldn't recommend it.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> One of Suzuka's biggest dangers though, is the weather. The track is in the Mie Prefecture, located on Japan's southeast coastline, well known for seeing unpredictable heavy rain. Just last year, the Japanese <keyword id="18072" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Grand-Prix">Grand Prix</keyword> was nearly canceled due to Typhoon Hagibis, the largest tropical storm of the year. But even when a torrential downpour leads to red flags and postponements of a race, the asphalt is still left slick wet. On a fast track, it makes for a bad combination.</p><p><strong>Niccolò:</strong> We have to be really careful in case of rain because the track is different from any other track. It's really fast and it's so grippy that we can touch our elbows in some corners with rain tires. But of course, when you crash in the rain, it's like, you start sliding and you never stop. So, the feeling is not amazing.</p><p><strong>Alex:</strong> The mental concentration you need, because every little movement you do on the bike in the rain is transferred to the tires and it could cause the bike to slip and slide.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Summers is Suzuka can be scorching hot as well, with temperatures frequently reaching a high of at least 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. For a superbike race like the Suzuka eight hours that takes place in July, this is especially brutal due to the intense heat motorcycle racers already experience.</p><p><strong>Alex:</strong> It's not just the temperature outside. When you're on a bike down the straight, you got all the engine temperature, all the temperature of the brakes and everything. So, just imagine being in a sauna and you getting uncomfortable and your eyes start to get salty sweat going in your eyes. Imagine putting a helmet on. During your hour stint you could use maybe two and a half kilos or three kilos of fluid from your body.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Between a confusingly tangled design, its infamously challenging corners and frequently unbearable weather, Suzuka remains Japan's most difficult and hazardous track. And despite numerous safety changes, including added barriers, additional tarmac runoff areas, and adjustments to the notorious 130 R corner, Suzuka is an old-school track that will always rank among the world's most dangerous. But it's the thrill ride it provides that encourages competitors to continue flocking in groves, and makes Suzuka a favorite amongst professionals.</p><p><strong>Jonathan:</strong> Honestly, it's one of the best tracks in the world. It's got so many cool elements as a track, and when you string them together and do a good lap time, there's no better buzz. There's no atmosphere like Suzuka when you come out of that last chicane and the grandstand from the chicane to Turn 1 is completely full.</p><p><strong>Aj Caldwell:</strong> Hey, I'm AJ. Why Suzuka Circuit is Japan's most dangerous race track

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Although the Aeroscraft airship was designed to revolutionize long-range cargo transport, its remarkable capabilities excite the imagination well beyond such practical applications.</p>
<p>Designed and built by the Aeros Corp. of Montebello, Calif., the Aeroscraftis longer than two football fields and about as tall as an 18-story building.</p>
<p>Its cargo area is more than 1 million cubic feet, and it can transport as much as 250 tons (compared to about 150 tons for an Airbus A380, the world's largest jetliner). </p>
<p>For this gift, the designers at London's Andrew Winch Designs (which specializes in private aircraft, megayachts, and interiors) have conceived a version of the colossal craft that would serve as an incomparable private residence.</p>
<p>"We're talking about something four times as large as even a big superyacht," says Jim Dixon, head of aviation projects at Andrew Winch Designs. He notes that the living area would have floor space totaling more than 43,000 square feet-just shy of 1 acre.</p>
<p>By comparison, the 285-foot-long motor yacht Ace, launched by Lürssen in 2012 and designed inside and out by Andrew Winch Designs, has 10,000 square feet of living area. With so much space, the flying home could include a wraparound walkway, as many as 20 suites and bedrooms, multiple grand saloons and dining rooms, work and conference spaces, a spa, a cinema, a ballroom, and more. </p>
<p>All of these features and rooms would be contained in a two-level, ring-shaped living area-a "halo" is what Dixon calls it-that surrounds the cargo bay. The cargo bay would be spacious enough to accommodate a megayacht as large as about 180 feet (depending on its weight) and a helicopter. Or it could hold several smaller watercraft or a fleet of cars.</p>
<p>The halo and the vehicles in the cargo bay could be lowered (and raised) from the airship onto water or land with a system of motorized cables. The Aeroscraft's inflatable landing pads allow it to land and remain stationary on just about any terrain or even water. The halo, which would be buoyant like a yacht, would feature transparent floor sections-like those on the viewing stations at the Grand Canyon and atop Chicago's Willis (formerly Sears) Tower-so that when it was lowered onto the water, the residents and their guests would have incredible views of the sea life underfoot. </p>
<p>With a flight ceiling of 12,000 feet, the Aeroscraft does not need to be pressurized. And because the craft can fly as low as local airspace restrictions allow, the design for this gift includes open-air observation terraces along the perimeter of the halo. "This vessel will provide a completely new perspective on the world," says Dixon. "You could fly directly over cities or mountaintops, to largely uncharted territories of the oceans, or to the North and South Poles-all with unrivaled views."</p>
<p>The Aeroscraft has a rigid internal structure containing Aeros's patent-pending ballast system, which uses a series of internal compressed-helium envelopes to make the craft heavier than air for grounding and lighter than air for flight. This design allows the aircraft to hover in place, and its rotating motors enable vertical takeoff and landing. The motors are positioned far enough from the cockpit and what would be the living area that passengers would not hear any noise from them. </p>
<p>Aeros says that the vessel is about eight times as fuel efficient as a large jet and has a range of nearly 6,000 miles and a cruise speed of 130 mph. The version for this gift would include lightweight composites for the frame, structure, and outer skin; honeycomb-cored glass for the windows and floors; carbon-fiber furnishings; and the latest touchscreen and mobile technology for the cockpit and living spaces.</p>
<p>A 266-foot-long prototype of the Aeroscraft first flew in August 2013 and received certification from the FAA. (The gift version would be subject to the necessary certification processes.) Two months later, the warehouse containing the prototype collapsed, essentially destroying the airship. But the company is currently building two Aeroscraft for commercial use, a 66-ton version and a 250-ton version. </p>
<p>The Andrew Winch Designs version of the Aeroscraft will take at least 10 years to deliver. The salaries of pilots and crewmembers, hangar space, and supplementary vehicles (including a megayacht) are not included.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bryan Logan/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">2016 Volvo XC90</p></div><p></p></div></div>The US auto industry is one big story of innovation, success, failure and recovery.</p><p>One look at the bankruptcies and bailouts of the last half-decade among America's big three - GM, Chrysler and Ford - and it's easy to see that even the giants were liable to fall.</p><p>The economic crisis also touched some well-loved import brands, like Volvo and Saab. Saab filed for bankruptcy in 2011. Volvo flirted with an unceremonious near-collapse in the late 2000s.</p><p>All of these carmakers have bounced back in their own way, but the story of Volvo's revival might be the most inspiring. Business Insider sat down with Volvo Cars of North America CEO Lex Kerssemakers at the 2015 LA Auto Show to learn how the Swedish brand turned itself around.</p><h2>A loss of identity</h2><p>Volvo went through an identity crisis after Ford bought Volvo Cars for nearly $6.5 billion in 1999. The Swedish vehicles once known for their quirky, offbeat styling and robust performance, began what would be a decade-long march toward irrelevance.</p><p>Though the carmaker would sell nearly 140,000 vehicles in the US under Ford's ownership in 2004, sales would fall off a cliff from then on. Ford was having a crisis of its own. It sold its other luxury brands - Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin - in 2008, but held on to Volvo, hoping to expand the line to compete with BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the US.</p><p>The effort wasn't successful. "We had to literally reinvent the company," Kerssemakers recalled, citing that harrowing 2008 to 2010 period. "[We had] no platforms and no engines because they were all Ford ... we faced an aging XC90 at that stage, and we had no platform to put a car on."</p><p>Kerssemaker's introspective tone betrays a sense of urgency. Clearly, Volvo was fighting for survival, and it all depended on the product. The Swedish carmaker had to reclaim its identity. It started with the engines.</p><p>"We went for 4-cylinder turbos," Kerssemakers explained, "we combined it with plug-in hybrid technology because we strongly believe that's the best alternative."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson</span></p><p class="caption">A worker polishes the 2016 Volvo XC90 at the Los Angeles Auto Show in Los Angeles, California.</p></div><p></p></div></div>If you think this amounts to the diminution of engine performance, you would be mistaken. As Kerssemakers put it, "you get V8 power with 4-cylinder fuel efficiency."</p><p>Of course, a new engine is no good without a new platform to pair it with. Volvo made "a new platform that was scalable, which facilitates batteries from the start," Kerssemakers said of Volvo's Scalable Product Platform (SPA).</p><h2>The first pitch</h2><p>With a brand-new engine and platform, Volvo still had to show a sign of life - proof that its multibillion-dollar comeback strategy was really taking shape.</p><p>That's where the the new XC90 crossover came in, Kerssemakers said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bryan Logan/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">2016 Volvo XC90</p></div><p></p></div></div>The XC90 concept first debuted in spring 2012, three years before the production model hit US dealers in 2015. It has been very well received. The first batch of 1,927 "launch edition" examples sold out in just under 48 hours.</p><p>As of the end of October this year, customers have snapped up nearly 7,300 new XC90s, and just this week, Motor Trend named it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/here-are-the-best-car-truck-and-suv-of-the-year-according-to-motor-trend-2015-11">SUV of the year</a>.</p><p>To Kerssemakers, this is confirmation that Volvo is finally headed in the right direction. The award "supports our platform strategy, our engine and electrification strategy - that's big for us. Getting a prize like this, you know that what's coming [next] is good. That's why it's so emotional."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Mike Blake</span></p><p class="caption">Volvo's concept cabin of the automated driving vehicle set for release in 2017 is pictured during the Los Angeles Auto Show in Los Angeles, California November 18, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>The next phase</h2><p>Volvo plans to put its newly minted platform to good use.</p><p>In the "next four years, we're going to replace everything," Kerssemakers said, suggesting that Volvo's flagship S80 sedan and its smaller crossover, the XC70, are due next.</p><p>And with the help of its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/volvo-is-building-its-first-us-factory-2015-5">first-ever US assembly plant</a>, the company wants to pass the 100,000 vehicle sales threshold again.</p><p>In addition to new product launches, Volvo is also wading deeper into autonomous technology, with its "Concept 26" program. It's built on the premise that connected autonomous vehicles could give back the average 26 minutes that drivers spend commuting in the US.</p><p>After its decade of uncertainty, Volvo's transformation into an energetic and self-assured brand is proof that, despite tough odds, the Swedish automaker hasn't lost an ounce of its grit.</p><p>But challenges remain. Volvo can claim only half a point of market share in the US, while BMW and Mercedes handily send hundreds of thousands of customers home with their vehicles year after year.</p><p>And as popular and capable as the Volvo XC90 is, the company has to move quickly on its next new batch of vehicles. Here's how Volvo crawled back from the brink of extinction

<p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Rachel Pitzel</span></p><p class="caption">Rachel Pitzel spent $1,000 on a "party stylist" to ensure her daughter's fifth birthday party theme was cohesive.</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>A one-year-old recently had a Luxembourg Gardens-inspired birthday party in Washington, D.C that cost six figures to throw.</li><li>It's not uncommon for wealthy parents to spend $50,000 or more on swanky soirees for their kids thanks to social media pressure to out-do one another.</li><li>Parents want custom-everything nowadays for their bashes, including $5,000 ball pits.</li><li>Even good old-fashioned sleepovers have been given a luxe makeover by companies charging four-figures for fanciful tent set-ups complete with breakfast trays, accent pillows and lanterns. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>This summer, a Parisian garden-theme party was one of the most lavish events hosted at Washington D.C.'s historic villa, the Anderson House. There was a make-your-own flower crown booth with fresh blooms, a mime, a crepe station, miniature motorized boats for children to play with in the property's pond, a balloon artist and extravagant favors. </p><p>"We had picnic baskets with custom fabric lining, gardening kits, macarons and beautiful candles," said Anne Ligeard Murat of the  NYC party planning company, <a href="https://www.clafoutis-creations.com/">Clafoutis</a>, which orchestrated the six-figure affair.  </p><p>The guest of honor? A very special one-year-old celebrating her first birthday.</p><p>"The family loves Luxembourg Gardens in Paris," said Murat.</p><p>Murat - whose itty-bitty clients include the kids of chef Geoffrey Zakarian, "Million Dollar Listings" star, Fredrik Eklund, MLB player, Adam Ottavino and NHL star, Bradley Peltz - says her basic kid's party package starts at around $6,000, with some bashes costing up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.</p><p>"Our clients wouldn't consider these parties to be over-the-top," Murat says. "It's just their lifestyle, and presentation is key," she said. </p><p>Nowadays, kids' birthday celebrations can put most weddings to shame, with Instagram and celebrities inspiring a seemingly endless game of one-upmanship. Instead of gift bags filled with bubbles, Nike high-tops are doled out. Ball pits are custom $5,000 creations and sleeping bags have been replaced by bespoke slumber party tents complete with breakfast trays, "fairy lights" and "accent cushions."</p><p>"People today are spending more than they were even five years ago," said Murat. "There's a desire for this kind of party." </p><p>And with pizza and cake no longer cutting it, wealthy parents are leaning on professionals to turn their tots' birthdays into five-star affairs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, <a href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/meeting-convention-and-event-planners.htm">job growth for event planners is expected to outpace the average job growth by 4 percent</a> between 2016 and 2026. The costs of parties are rising, too. A <a href="https://www.babycenter.com/0_celebrating-your-babys-first-birthday_1493204.bc">2017 BabyCenter survey</a> revealed that 11% of parents reported spending more than $500 for their child's first birthday. But in affluent cities like New York and Los Angeles, $500 can just  be the cost of the cake - if you're lucky. </p><h2><strong>The days of simple parties are over: "We have done kids parties for $350,000, but I would say the majority fall in the $50,000 range."</strong></h2><p>When it came time for Rachel Pitzel to plan her daughter Harper's fifth birthday party last year, the Los Angeles resident didn't blink at shelling out thousands of dollars for the picture perfect fete. She hired elite party planner and rental service <a href="https://www.teakandlace.com/">Teak and Lace</a>, which has worked with the Kardashians, Nick Lachey and Lily Aldridge. She spent $1,000 on a party stylist to make sure the "Carrousel" theme (spelled the Disneyland way) was cohesive, and cut a check for nearly a thousand dollars on a professional photographer to document the event.</p><p>"I drew the line at a $500 cotton candy stand," Pitzel said of her daughter's bash, which included a huge rack of rented dress-up clothes like tutus, tiaras, bracelets, necklaces, pretend earrings and kids makeup. </p><p>Pitzel says her pricey affair was entirely in line with what her friends were throwing.</p><p>"The days of simple parties have started waning with the rise of Instagram, Pinterest, Etsy and Amazon," said Pitzel.  "Parents spare no expense for the location or food. One party we went to had a manicure truck and a grilled cheese truck, and every girl got a spa makeover complete with nails, hair and make-up, plus robes. Yhey got to make their own bag of candy to go, just like at Dylan's Candy Bar."</p><p>Rachel Huntington, owner of the Los Angeles party planning company, <a href="https://www.bonjourfete.com/">Bonjour Fete</a>, says her sales have been consistently climbing since she opened her doors in 2016. </p><p class="source"><span>Mary Costa</span></p><p class="caption">Rachel Huntington, owner of the party planning company, Bonjour Fete, constructed this balloon rainbow for a lucky one-year-old's birthday celebration.</p><p>"We've surpassed every goal we've set," said Huntington, whose clients include Kate Hudson and Hilary Duff. She says social media has been a driving force behind her growing business, leading parents to spend more than ever before so they can post the extravagant party photos online. </p><p>"I have seen an insane amount of money poured into food stations, snow hills, entertainment, flower walls, balloon clouds and custom everything. Need an American Ninja Warrior set-up in your backyard? I got you. Need a famous chef to flip burgers on your grill? No problem. If the client wants it - we don't hold back," Huntington said. "We have done kids parties for $350,000 but I would say the majority fall in the $50,000 range."</p><h2><strong>Embracing their inner child</strong></h2><p>From a "Singing in the Rain" theme with custom lyric books to a "Little House on the Prairie" party with kids learning how to churn butter, Murat says throwing these kinds of gatherings allows deep-pocketed adults to revisit their childhood days. </p><p>"They get so excited around cotton candy or even miniature sandwiches; it allows them to feel young again," Murat said. </p><p>One of Murat's clients, NYC mom Yuliya Zhang, has been hiring Murat to plan her now five year-old son's birthdays since he was one. Zhang, 33, admits she doesn't bat an eye at spending between up to $40,000 on her son's celebrations. </p><p>"What's most important for me is to love what I see and to be in a beautiful, magical, organic environment that brings a fairy tale to life," said Zhang, a stay-at-home mom.</p><p class="source"><span>Paige Rigoglioso</span></p><p class="caption">NYC mom Yuliya Zhang spends five figures on her son's extravagant bashes including a "Jurassic World" party complete with archeological digs and life-like dinosaurs.</p><p>Together, she and Murat have thrown her son a policeman party complete with a NYPD-costumed actor who led a mini police academy, a dress-up corner where kids could choose to be a cop or a robber, a mugshot photo booth, and a magician. Another year, the duo planned a "Jurassic World" bash with life-like dinosaurs, an actor dressed as Owen Grady - the birthday boy's favorite character from the movie - and activity tables where kids could dig for dinosaur bones.</p><p>"As adults, we like to go back in time and experience these happy moments again," said Zhang, "which is why we also hired a professional photographer to capture every party."</p><h2><strong>Custom, custom, custom</strong></h2><p>Status-quo party packages at the neighborhood play gym or at-home gatherings with a pinata and Betty Crocker cake just don't pack enough punch when every parent with an Instagram account is a micro influencer.</p><p>That means throwing a party with a wow factor is of utmost importance.</p><p>Murat says for one youngster's party, she had actors dress up as Ghostbusters to create slime with the kids and even parked an Ecto-1 car outside just as the guests were leaving.</p><p>"You can't just park an Ecto-1 in front of a building on Park Avenue, so it requires a lot of coordination," said Murat. </p><p>Last April, Manhattan mom, Madelyn Mejia, went all out to make sure her five-year-old son's $12,000 knight-themed birthday party was an unforgettable affair.</p><p>"The cake was the most beautiful medieval castle that had been sketched and envisioned by Anne [Murat]," said Mejia. "And the party favors were beautiful ceramic unicorn trinket boxes that we had personalized by a calligrapher for each child." </p><p class="source"><span>Arianna Tettamanz</span></p><p class="caption">Madelyn Mejia's five-year-old son's $12,000 birthday party included a custom-designed medieval castle cake.</p><p>It's that craving for something unique that helped Eunice Ong of <a href="https://meshkids.co/">MESH Kids Co.</a> break into the pint-sized party scene. Ong says she creates anywhere from ten to 25 personalized ball pits per month - with each 10 foot by 20 foot space costing between $4,000 and $5,000. </p><p>"Our core demographic is children five years-old and under," said Ong, who is already booked into mid-2021 and counts the Kardashians among her clients. </p><p>Marie, a stay-at-home mother of two in Los Angeles, who didn't want to reveal her last name for fear of social media backlash, is using Ong's services next month. She's justified the cost with the mindset that her son will only turn three once.</p><p>"I'm always trying to find new and experiential ways to entertain my kids and the birthday guests," said Marie. </p><p>After all, for moms like Marie, ordering a "Fudgie the Whale" Carvel cake is out of the question. </p><p>Baker Sheila Volk-Weiss, who owns the Los Angeles baking company, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/peachtreeandbelle/?hl=en">Peachtree and Belle</a>, says kid birthday party cakes can go up to $700 for her three-tier confections. "They're like small wedding cakes."</p><p>Her recent orders have been filled with requests for $250 volcano cakes complete with buttercream lava erupting from their cores and two cakes connected by a foot-long fondant rainbow that cost $325.</p><p>And that's not where her edible masterpieces stop. "We'll often do on-theme cupcakes for the adults and personalized cookies as party favors and table decor," said Volk-Weiss, who says those treats typically tack on an extra couple hundred dollars. </p><p>"I'm busier than ever because parents are feeling more and more pressure to put on photogenic parties that resonate on Instagram," said Volk-Weiss.</p><h2><strong>Bring on the professionals</strong></h2><p>Just don't expect the parents to be getting down and dirty with set-up.</p><p>One Dallas mom, a human resources professional who asked to remain anonymous for professional reasons, said it's not uncommon for toddlers' parties in her neighborhood to have valet services, black-tie servers passing trays of sushi and a full bar service.</p><p>"People have staff-managed bounce houses, characters in costume, deejays, full catering, personalized candy, clean-up staff and paper invitation suites," said the Dallas mom.</p><p>Even good old fashioned sleepovers are becoming fancy affairs thanks to companies like Trish Healy's <a href="https://www.wondertentparties.com/">WonderTent Parties</a>. Their "SleepOver" package starts at $450 for five guests and includes a tent, plush mattress, blankets, fairy lights, accent cushions and a breakfast tray for each kid. Celebrities like Molly Sims and Kyle Richardson have called upon the company to erect backyard installations for picturesque campouts. </p><p class="source"><span>Leyna Noelani/@Yellowheartphotography</span></p><p class="caption">Companies like WonderTent erect whimsical structures for kid parties that rival most weddings.</p><p>Shawna Wilson, a mother of two and founder of SBW Tennis Academy in Los Angeles said she never even gave old-school sleeping bags a thought when she planned her daughter's $2,000 slumber party.</p><p>"It's all about convenience. It's so much more comfortable to have a mattress and blankets and lamps and it means the kids don't have to bring anything other than themselves and the set-up is magical looking - the kids were so excited when they saw the tent," she said. </p><p>Healy says it's not uncommon for parents to add on additional services like outdoor movie packages starting at $300, outdoor dining experiences that start at $300, or karaoke machines, candy stations or dress-up stations that start at $100. </p><p class="source"><span>Leyna Noelani/@Yellowheartphotography</span></p><p class="caption">Say bye bye to the sleeping bag.
