<ul class="summary-list"><li>A condiment called the "Pink Sauce" has gone viral on social media. </li><li>Its creator, a social-media food content creator, began selling the pink liquid in June.</li></ul><p>A bright pink condiment bottled and sold by a <keyword id="11894125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tiktok" source="Orion">TikTok</keyword> chef has been the subject of memes and scrutiny across social media for its mysterious ingredients, unknown taste, seemingly nonsensical nutrition facts label, and its unconventional appearance. </p><p>The substance, appropriately dubbed "Pink Sauce," is the product of food content creator Carly Pii, who has since <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7108104226391231787?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">June 11</a> promoted the product on her social-media pages. In reviews touted by Pii, the product has been described as "sweet, savory, and seasoned." Others who said they ordered and tried the sauce described the condiment as "watery," "thin," and like "colored ranch." </p><p>Pii, who has 57,000 followers <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii">on her TikTok page @chef.pii</a>, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp_IXcs5EcbxtO_3DBtDTCA/videos">a couple thousand YouTube subscribers</a>, in June started advertising the sauce featuring supposed reviews from the public, videos of her dipping chicken in the fluorescent pink condiment, and videos that emphasized the sauce was both "natural" and "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7112866452121718062?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">edible</a>." </p><p>The sauce costs $20 plus additional shipping charges (placing an order of the sauce to Insider's New York offices, for instance, would result in an additional charge of about $11). A graphic on the pink sauce website says its ingredients include sunflower seed oil, dragon fruit, honey, chili, and garlic.</p><p>Pii's TikTok videos promoting the sauce range in views with some having been viewed millions of times. A <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7115235372149411118?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">July 30 video showing Pii drenching a KFC drumstick</a> in the pink liquid has amassed 2.1 million views. Another <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7113630033960242475?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">video showing the sauce used on chicken wings</a> from WingStop has been viewed 3.6 million times since it was posted June 26.</p><p>In a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7113883673258118442?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">June 27 video</a> posted to TikTok, Pii claimed 100 preorders for the sauce had sold out. The sauce officially launched at 11:11 a.m. on July 1, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7115104120041901358?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">according to Pii</a>. She has since posted several videos showing <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7120756233698544942?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">supposed orders</a> for the product. In a video posted Monday, Pii said she <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7121714123393469739?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">shipped 1,000 orders</a> in a single week.</p><h2><strong>Backlash and questions about food safety</strong> </h2><p>Some creators turned to TikTok to complain that their Pink Sauce had arrived in bad condition or the bottles had arrived broken. Viewers of Pii's videos have noted the sauce appeared to vary dramatically in color — at times appearing hot pink while sometimes appearing pale. Some videos posted by Pii appear to show different variations of the Pink sauce, though she in a video <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7113175505582542123?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">likened the variety to lighting differences</a>. </p><div type="image" title="Nutrition label posted on the &quot;Pink Sauce&quot; website." height="1206" width="692" msid="93038604" hostid="261"></div><p>Other posts noted abnormalities with the nutrition label, which appeared to be affixed to the back of the plastic bottle with glitter glue. TikToker <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@annareportsnews/video/7122301867660692782?_t=8U8e8svwZUs&amp;_r=1">Anna Reports News</a>, for example, noted there was milk listed in the ingredients, but no storage instructions. Others pointed out a misspelling of the word "vinegar."</p><p>The nutrition label claims there are 444 servings in each bottle of the sauce, with each serving as 90 calories. That means the label states there are nearly 40,000 calories per bottle. The label claims each serving is 1 tbsp, which means the bottle should contain more than a gallon-and-a-half of sauce.</p><p>Pii told Insider she made an "honest mistake" and "we are working rapidly to fix everything." She said she never anticipated Pink Sauce would blow up like it did, and her small team was learning "by trial and error."</p><p>"We are working to show people that, hey, we're focused on the solution, we're not focused on the problem," she said. "How can we fix this to get Pink Sauce to everyone who wants it?"</p><p>She added she had changed the courier, and Pink Sauce would not be shipped using UPS to ensure it would arrive in good condition. She said the label would also be corrected to say "please refrigerate after opening."</p><p><a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chef.pii/video/7122476861501836587?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">Pii on Wednesday also posted a video on TikTok</a>, saying it was time to "acknowledge the elephant in the room."</p><p>"First of all, my apologies," she said. "I'm only human, I'm not perfect."</p><p>Pii said in the video that errors with serving size would be corrected on future orders and were the result of an error in labeling (the nutrition facts on the Pink Sauce website have not been updated by Thursday). She did not address any of the comments about ingredients or storage. She said customers would also receive a gift and a thank you note and said her team was working on lowering the price of the sauce.</p><p>Pii also stated in the TikTok she was following FDA standards, claiming the product was "currently in lab testing."</p><p>Ben Chapman, a food safety specialist and professor at North Carolina State University, told Insider he thought ordering and eating the Pink Sauce was "risky" based on what he had seen from videos featuring the sauce and its labeled contents. The ingredients listed in the sauce, including garlic and oil, might create a pH or water activity that make the product unsafe to ship without refrigeration, according to Chapman. </p><p>"Putting those two things together and leaving it at room temperature in other situations has led to botulism," said Chapman, who has not tried or tested the product but has recently become aware of it going viral online.</p><p>Chapman pointed out that Pii has noted the product has not been "FDA approved," but he called that claim "odd" because the FDA doesn't approve such products. Instead, he said a product like the Pink Sauce would be subject to various federal and state regulations. <a href="http://fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/it-really-fda-approved">On its website</a>, the FDA notes it does not approve nutrition labels on food products.</p><p>"I don't have a lot of confidence in the food safety aspect of what's going on without knowing more about the product," he added.</p><p>But Pii is still confident in her Pink Sauce, saying she cares about her customers and their health.</p><p>"We are working diligently to clear all discrepancies, to make sure that everyone gets their Pink Sauce," she said. May improve immunity</h2><p>Moringa contains nutrients that have been proven to boost <a href="https://health.clevelandclinic.org/eat-these-foods-to-boost-your-immune-system/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">immunity</a>. For instance, moringa is a source of nutrients like <a href="https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/168416/nutrients" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and C</a>, which improve immunity by protecting cells from invaders and pathogens, says Ben-Asher.</p><p>While moringa's effects on immunity haven't been studied extensively in humans, a <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphar.2018.00108/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">number of animal studies</a> have indicated that moringa extract improves immune function in rats and mice. </p><h2>2. May improve heart health</h2><p><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26864583/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Animal studies</a> also suggest that moringa can improve heart health. May improve bone health</h2><p>"Moringa is a good source of calcium and phosphorus, which are nutrients that improve the strength, structure, and integrity of your bones," says Ben-Asher. A healthy <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/002062.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calcium</a> intake - about <a href="https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Calcium-HealthProfessional/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1,000 to 1,200 milligrams</a> per day - can help prevent bone loss and disease as you age.</p><h2>Moringa side effects and risks</h2><p>Moringa has been shown to be mostly safe if you consume the leaves and seeds as food, says Ben-Asher. Even supplemental doses of 5 to 10 grams of moringa extract or powder per day are generally considered <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6680322/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">safe</a>, he says.</p><p>However, many of the health benefits associated with moringa are calculated based on the consumption of <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2213453016300362" target="_blank" rel="noopener">100 grams</a> of dry moringa leaf per day, which is difficult to achieve due to the bitter and unpleasant taste, says Ben-Asher.</p><p>Additionally, he says large, concentrated doses of moringa extract (not leaves), such as 20 grams or higher, can be toxic and cause side effects in people who:</p><ul><li>Take hypertensive-lowering medications, as it can potentially lead to dangerously low blood pressure levels.</li><li>Have diabetes, particularly those who take insulin, as it can cause a significant <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-hypoglycemia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drop in blood sugar</a>.</li><li>Have <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/12640687_Role_of_Moringa_oleifera_leaf_extract_in_the_regulation_of_thyroid_hormone_status_in_adult_male_and_female_rats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hypothyroidism</a>, as it has been shown to lower levels of thyroid hormones in animals.</li></ul><h2>Insider's takeaway</h2><p>Moringa is a nutritious plant that may offer several health benefits, such as stronger immunity and improved blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. </p><p>Moringa contains several nutrients that are linked to better health, and preliminary research in animal models and cell cultures shows promise. The science on moringa and whether it can actually benefit your health

<p>A few days before the official holiday, my Brooklyn friend group hosts Friendsgiving. Unlike your typical Turkey Day, Friendsgiving is spent with friends and in potluck-fashion, on or around the fourth Thursday of November.</p>
<p>The tradition's exact origin is unknown, although pop culture may have planted its seed. Some of the most cherished episodes of the late NBC sitcom "Friends" are the ones in which the gang celebrates Thanksgiving. What fan can forget when Rachel scored the winning touchdown against the boys in football, or when Joey got his head stuck in a turkey?</p>
<p>In recent years, Friendsgiving has <a href="http://www.metro.us/newyork/lifestyle/education/2013/11/14/friendsgiving-warms-up-an-on-campus-holiday/" target="_blank">gained popularity among college students</a> and young professionals, who are often too far from home or too broke to travel for the holiday.</p>
<p>Since last year marked my first fall in New York City, it seemed like the perfect time to make the transition from family Thanksgiving in New Hampshire to Friendsgiving in Brooklyn. My two roommates and I managed to fit a party of eight in our New York apartment, a feat of its own.</p>
<p>It was awesome.</p>
<p>Don't get me wrong, I love my family. You know what else I love? Holidays sans stress. Turkey and stuffing, hold the drama. Green bean casserole without a side of drunk uncles, bratty cousins fighting over drumsticks, and prying aunts who want to know every detail of your life.</p>

<p>This is our apartment. We have a pretty tiny oven, so we outsourced the pie and mashed potato-making to two friends who live nearby.</p>

<p>One of my roommates is a decorating wunderkind - she doesn't even need Pinterest. As a table centerpiece, she cut the top off of a butternut squash and filled it with flowers in seasonal colors. I collected leaves from Prospect Park to fold into the paper napkins.</p>

<p>To get guests in the mood for sentimental conversations, one of my roommates wrote this definition on the chalkboard. "Sobremesa" is one of those Spanish words that doesn't have an English translation.</p>

<p>My other roommate is our personal Iron Chef. She opted to cook cornish hens instead of a turkey so we'd have room in the oven for extra sausage-and-apple stuffing. Each bird fed two people.</p>
<p>I asked that she "make the turkey dance" before stuffing them, like my parents do every Thanksgiving. She puppeteered a hen to the tune of "Gangnam Style."</p>

<p>She also made hot mulled apple cider with dark rum. We encouraged her to pour in the whole Captain Morgan handl, because unlike at Thanksgiving, you're encouraged to have a little buzz at Friendsgiving.</p>

<p>We garnished the drinks with cinnamon sticks and served them in Mason jars. This is Brooklyn, after all.</p>

One roommate scratched her eye after slicing an onion and experienced such searing pain, we thought we were going to have to take her to the hospital. (She's fine now.) We kept realizing we forgot to pick up needed ingredients; so by the second unplanned trip to the grocery store, I invested in a six-pack of Woodchuck to preserve our sanity.</p>
<p>But there was no screaming, no awkward interactions with relatives you see twice a year, and no tears (besides the onion incident). Just old jokes rehashed and new memories made between people who love each other.</p>
<p>If you're going to spend Thanksgiving with your relatives, have a Friendsgiving, too. Celebrate both your families, no matter how weird one is.</p>
