Five out of the top-10 unlisted companies in India slipped in valuation in 2023

According to a report by Redseer Strategy Consultants, the fantasy sports market has grown due to increased awareness of fantasy sports among people and increased marketing efforts by new companies. The gross gaming revenue of fantasy sports companies is expected to increase by 30 to 35%, taking it to ₹2,900-3,100 crore during 2023. The report predicts that the average revenue per user (ARPU) will increase from ₹410 during IPL 2022 to ₹440 per user during IPL 2023. In 2022, fantasy sports companies earned a gross gaming revenue of ₹2,260 crore, up from ₹1,460 crore in 2021, registering a growth of 55%. In 2022, IPL recorded a viewership of 400 million TV viewers. In 2022, 50% of the transacting users were from tier-2 cities and 31% from tier-3 and beyond cities. Currently, the headcount of the sports technology company is 800 and it is planning to make it to 1000 by the end of December next year (2022). The sports technology company told Business Insider that they will be recruiting 160 people for their core team and rest 40 people for other domains like human resources (HR), legal, marketing and many more. “We aim to hire over 200 more people in the coming months, with around 80% of them working in our core teams. The remaining 20% will be part of our other support functions like HR, finance, legal, marketing. We are not looking for any international hires at the moment,” said Kevin Freitas, chief human resources officer of Dream Sports during an interaction with Business Insider. The Mumbai-based company doubled its headcount during the pandemic last year from 339 to 800 and aims to upscale its infrastructure and tech advancements. Freitas further added, “Our team has more than doubled since January of 2020 during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic when our headcount was just 339. As a leading sports tech company, we aim to upscale our tech advancements and infrastructure, as the company and our user base of 130 million expands. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai reportedly said that the government will deal with gaming operators who run “games of chance” camouflaged as “games of skill”. Even those skill games that involve the risk of the player losing money would invite action under the law, he said. However, there is not enough clarity on which games are considered under “game of skill” and “game of chance”. As the Indian Premier League (IPL) season has kicked in, online gaming firms like Dream11, My11Circle, MPL Pro, Bet365, Gamezy and many others can come under the radar of Karnataka’s ban on online ‘game of chance’. Operating such games, sheltering such operations, and abetting and participating in such online games both cognisable and non-bailable is an offence, according to the bill.
