<ul class="summary-list"><li>Located on Andøya island in <keyword id="6356961" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="norway">Norway</keyword>, <keyword id="4948117" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-whale">The Whale</keyword> museum allows visitors to learn more about marine life and go whale watching.</li><li><keyword id="8335287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dorte-Mandrup">Dorte Mandrup</keyword>'s design for The Whale was chosen following strong competition from some of Europe's biggest architects.</li><li>Development had been recently halted when an ancient Viking mound was discovered at the site, reports <a href="https://mymodernmet.com/the-whale-museum-arctic-circle/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">My Modern Met</a>.</li><li>The Whale is now expected to open in 2022, and will include exhibition spaces, offices, a café, and a gift store</li></ul><p>Danish architectural studio Dorte Mandrup has released new images for a whale-watching viewpoint and education center that is shaped like an actual whale. </p><p>Named The Whale, the center will be located in Andenes on the island of Andøya, around 300km north of the Arctic Circle. Andøya is the perfect place for whale watching because of the area's deep-sea canyon, which makes it possible for large-toothed whales to feed close to shore. The canyon also helps whales to navigate during their yearly migration patterns.</p><div type="image" title="DorteMandrup_TheWhale_Stranded_v2_www.mir.no" height="1500" width="2000" msid="79111996" hostid="261"></div><p>Dorte Mandrup's vision for the building is to create a place that seamlessly blends into its landscape.</p><p>Speaking with Insider, Founder and Creative Director Dorte Mandrup described the building as an almost poetic ode to its surroundings, where "the landscape above and under the water is one continuous skin, making the surface of the water the only division between above and below." She added that this provided inspiration for the building to look like it had gently been lifted from the ground to form a natural-looking mound.</p><p>Earlier this year, it was discovered that the site was home to an ancient Viking settlement mound that was much larger than they originally thought. It was then declared as protected under the Cultural Heritage Act as one of the largest settlements found in Norway.</p><p>Last month, the decision was overturned because of its touristic and cultural role in the area.</p><div type="image" title="DorteMandrup_TheWhale_AboutToChangev3_www.mir.no" height="1041" width="2000" msid="79112000" hostid="261"></div><p>The Norwegian studio's design was the winner of a <a href="https://www.thewhale.no/architectural-competition" target="_blank" rel="noopener">competition</a> that saw entries from some of Europe's biggest architects including the Bjarke Ingels Group and Snøhetta. The <a href="https://www.thewhale.no/03-838838-plansje" target="_blank" rel="noopener">design</a> was chosen for its minimal and noninvasive structure which Børre Berglund, CEO of The Wale AS, described as a "very exciting and unusual building."</p><p>The building itself rises out of the ground, and is designed to look as if it has been "lifted by a giant" to reveal a cavity underneath which will house the center.</p><div type="image" title="DorteMandrup_TheWhale_WhatAView_V2_www.mir.no" height="2066" width="2000" msid="79112003" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside, The Whale will house exhibition spaces, offices, a café, and a gift store all framed by large floor to ceiling windows that further connect the building with its natural landscape. The roof of the center will be paved with natural stone and lined with railings that allow visitors to climb to the top and be treated with another unique view of the surroundings, and whale-watching opportunities.</p><div type="image" title="DorteMandrup_TheWhale_Swell_www.mir.no" height="1727" width="2000" msid="79112007" hostid="261"></div><p>From the ocean, the building would also resemble that of a whale's fin.</p><p>For Mandrup, The Whale is hoped to be an unforgettable experience that will "inspire and open a way for a meeting between human and whale, culture, and nature. It is important for us to underline that the city council's approval is merely one of the preliminary steps of a long journey," Bestseller Project Manager Anders Krogh <a href="https://about.bestseller.com/news/plans-approved-still-a-long-way-to-go">said in a statement</a>.</p><p>Though the fashion company has long outgrown its roots in Brande - the owner, Anders Holch Povlsen, is Denmark's richest man with a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/anders-holch-povlsen/#534026992691">reported net worth</a> of $7.2 billion - it's hoping that the new building development will put the Jutland town on the map.</p><p>"It will be a landmark," Krogh added in the statement "... but it will also function as an architectural attraction benefiting hotel guests, students and other users of the building."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bestseller</span></p><p class="caption">Sheep and people will apparently co-exist in Bestseller Village.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Despite the fact that it's hardly in keeping with the rural surroundings, Bestseller doesn't seem to have come up against much opposition from local residents.</p><p>"It's hard to find anybody here who is opposed to the tower. Everybody thinks it's a fantastic idea, and me too," Morten Dickmann, a reporter for the local newspaper, told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/apr/01/like-the-eye-of-sauron-western-europes-tallest-building-planned-for-tiny-danish-town-brande-bestseller">The Guardian</a>.</p><p>"The Danish news media tried hard to find someone opposed, but they couldn't find anyone."</p><p>Denmark is among the flattest countries in the world - it has an <a href="https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-the-lowest-average-elevations.html">average elevation of just 112 feet</a> (Nepal, in comparison, has an <a href="https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-the-highest-average-elevations.html">average elevation of over 10,000 feet</a>) - meaning the enormous skyscraper will be visible from 60km away.</p><p>Perhaps that's why the only scrutiny of the proposed build has come from Copenhagen.</p><p><a href="http://rokokoposten.dk/2019/01/11/breaking-sauron-flytter-til-brande/">Rokokoposten</a>, Denmark's equivalent to The Onion, likened the skyscraper to the Eye of Sauron from the "Lord of the Rings" series in a spoof article entitled: "Breaking: Sauron moves to Brande."</p><p>"I have offered to finance a major interactive art installation in the form of a blazing eye at the very top of the building, which I believe will serve as an artistic lighthouse for the whole of Central Jutland," the publication quotes the fictional character Sauron as saying.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bestseller</span></p><p class="caption">Bestseller has more than 1,500 employees in Brande.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Guardian did speak to one other opponent, who said that local media refused to publish her comments.</p><p>"People in Brande are so afraid to criticise Bestseller. It's like a religion or something," Trine Kammer, an architect who lives in Aarhus, told the newspaper.</p><p>"Such a big building will make the world claustrophobically small. Why do I have to be reminded of Bestseller when I'm walking by myself in a quiet wood?"</p><p>Bestseller was keen to stipulate that this project is still a long way off becoming brick and mortar, though.</p><p>"The city council's approval is obviously essential, but we still have a lot of homework to do and much to consider before a project like this can be brought to life.
