<br /><ul><li>Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) has partnered with <keyword id="6390344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="CISCO">Cisco</keyword> to revamp its Enterprise Cloud Platform (ECP).</li><li>As more businesses hop onto multiple clouds, the new software aims to help streamline the workflow processes and fluctuations. </li><li>The aim is also to make sure that security and policy positions across different clouds in different regions is consistent.</li></ul><keyword id="6357585" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-consultancy-services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/after-becoming-the-third-largest-it-service-brand-in-the-world-tcs-surpasses-ibm-in-market-cap/articleshow/69741769.cms">TCS</a>) and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cisco-ceo-chuck-robbins-calls-for-a-federal-privacy-law-throwing-a-spear-at-internet-companies-who-sell-advertising/articleshow/67891593.cms">Cisco</a> are launching their own software to help businesses get on the cloud. <br /><br />The initiative combines TCS' Enterprise Cloud Platform (ECP), which delegates business operations across different <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-took-over-the-176-billion-market-for-cloud-computing-Now-its-using-the-same-playbook-in-logistics-/articleshow/68275874.cms">cloud services</a>, with Cisco's ACI for security.<br /><br />"With the growing adoption of multi-cloud strategies, enterprises are looking for a simplified operating model with a consistent policy, security, and visibility," said Satishchandra Doreswamy, vice-president and global head of Cloud Infrastructure Practice at TCS.<br /><br />Cisco claims that when the platform was testing for a large insurance customer, which they did not name, there was a 60% decrease in firewall traffic and high reductions in total ownership costs across different regions.<br /><br /><strong>How it works<br /></strong><br />Enterprises are becoming <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cloud-computing-wars-tax-frustrations-and-chaos-at-hq-trivia/articleshow/68978787.cms">more digital</a> in order to reign in new revenue streams and grow faster. At the same time, upgrading workflows to the cloud has its challenges — like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-personal-data-protection-bill-global-ceo-concerns/articleshow/68389336.cms">governance</a>, compliance, flexibility and the optimisation of cost.<br /><br />The point of the collaboration is to streamline everything but in a secure way, according to Cisco.<br /><br />When companies are operating across multiple clouds, each cloud has its own function to perform. If there is a change in the workload of one cloud, it could mean consecutive changes in other clouds as well.<br /><br />TCS and Cisco's new software will help clients determine how they can make those changes while keeping their ownership costs low.<br /><br />At the same time, since these servers are placed in different geographies, the regulations have to be consistent. TCS and Cisco experimented a cloud service with a large insurer — and now they are ready to launch

<br /><ul><li><strong>A government school in <keyword id="6358119" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mysuru">Mysuru</keyword> underwent a makeover to look like a ‘train coach’ in order to attract students.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>The village where the school is located does not even have proper bus connectivity and some students have never seen a train.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>This strategy has also been employed by some the government schools in the villages of <keyword id="6355033" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangalore">Bangalore</keyword> and Rajasthan.</strong></li></ul><br />A small <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/school-turns-into-train-coach-to-attract-students/article24402639.ece?homepage=true">government school</a> in Haropura village near Mysuru underwent a makeover to look like a ‘train coach’ in order to attract students. The school had just three classrooms and while most students were being rather irregular in attending classes, many others had started dropping out. With a lack of admissions, the school was facing threats of closure. <br /><br />And that was when the teachers decided to take matters into their own hands. While browsing online, they came up with a great idea and shared it with the principal. Headmaster Basavanaik and the teachers, Doreswamy, Tarannum and Netravathi, spent ₹25,000 from their own pockets to get two artists from Mysuru to paint the school.<br /><br />After the sprucing up, the school now looks like a train passing through the village. This tiny village does not even have proper bus connectivity, as the headmaster pointed out, and some of the students had never even seen a train before. Needless to say, the new look made the school the centre of attention. The students now feel like they are studying in a train and therefore, there is full attendance. <br /><br />This successful makeover has drawn attention from the Education Department and local authorities who have developed a new interest in the school. The Gram Panchayat has also offered to build a compound wall and the foundation stone was laid down on Wednesday.<br /><br />The school currently has 55 students studying in classes 1 to 7 and the authorities are hoping to attract more children to the school from the nearby villages too.<br /><br />However this isn’t the first school to turn into a ‘train coach’ to attract students. A government school in <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/videos/city/jaipur/when-a-government-school-in-alwar-was-turned-into-train-to-attract-students/videoshow/63690271.cms">Rajasthan </a>did the same. It even painted DISE codes on every ‘coach’ of the ‘train’. The principal’s office was turned into an engine and the playground into a platform. This investment has resulted in the need to obtain additional funding to continue with further investment... and continue as a going concern."</p><p>Here are the important numbers from Blippar's earnings for the year to the end of March last year:</p><ul><li><strong>A pre-tax loss of £34.5 million</strong></li><li><strong>Revenue of £5.7 million</strong></li><li><strong>Operating loss of £35 million</strong></li><li><strong>£10 million left in the bank</strong></li></ul><p>Due to a change in the way Blippar reports its finances, it's difficult to compare the company's 2017 performance with how it did in 2015/2016. </p><p>In the 16-month period to 31 March 2016, Blippar posted revenue of £8.5 million and a loss of £24 million, according to its adjusted results. While a direct comparison is difficult, the most recent numbers suggest that Blippar has lost more money in a shorter timeframe.</p><p>Blippar also said it had raised $26.3 million (£19.9 million) after March 2017 through loans from existing undisclosed investors, and a further $500,000 (around £378,000) from selling its shares in another startup, WaveOptics.</p><p>It didn't say whether the new cash was sufficient to keep the company going for the next year. The company would not comment on Thursday when asked about raising new funding.</p><p>It was five months late in postings its financials for the year to 31 March 2017, and has not explained the delay.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Blippar</span></p><p class="caption">The Blippar app.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Blippar was founded in 2011 by CEO Ambarish "Rish" Mitra, CTO Omar Tayeb, and directors Steven Spencer and Jessica Butcher.</p><p>The company is best known for its augmented reality app, which can recognise everyday objects and overlay them with more information. It predominantly makes money through selling augmented reality advertising to brands and advertising agencies, and through licensing its technology to third parties.</p><p>Sources told Business Insider last year that, despite its charismatic and visionary chief executive, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-valued-1-billion-burn-rate-cash-2017-4">Blippar has always struggled to nail down a strategy</a> and had inflated its user numbers.</p><p>It has pivoted from augmented reality to computer vision and, the sources said last year, was on the brink of running out of cash. They said Blippar had shuttered offices in Japan, Turkey, and Amsterdam, something the firm acknowledged in its 2017 earnings.</p><p>Blippar blamed its losses on its investments in computer vision and said it employed more than 116 technologists, compared to 54 sales and marketing staff.</p><p>That number is now likely to be lower, after <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-shuts-mountain-view-office-after-losing-key-execs-2018-5">Blippar shut another office in Mountain View in May</a> this year. The Mountain View hub was Blippar's biggest office and houses its computer vision engineers, although the company has not confirmed any job losses.</p><p>The filings also reveal that Blippar has lost another board member. Javier Santiso represented one of Blippar's biggest investors, the Malaysian government's sovereign wealth fund. He resigned in March. A board member also quit.</strong></li><li><strong>Business Insider reported last year that the firm was struggling financially, had inflated its numbers, and was yet to establish a viable business model - all of which the startup denied.</strong></li><li><strong>In a published statement, Blippar said the closure had not been an "easy decision."</strong></li></ul><p><br />Augmented reality startup Blippar is abandoning Silicon Valley after shutting its third international office in the space of two years as it struggles to nail down its business model.</p><p>The company <a href="https://blippar.com/en/resources/blog/2018/05/08/blippar-consolidates-technology-operations-focus-expansion-its-ar-platform-london-hq-while-growing-us-commercial-operations-nyc/">announced it would shutter its Mountain View, California office</a> and shift technical development to its London and Bangalore offices. It isn't clear what will happen to the 60-plus engineers the firm says it employs in California, its biggest office, and the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p><p>In a published statement, the company said: "Blippar has built some extraordinary computer vision technology from Mountain View, California, and that IP will continue to power the future growth of our augmented reality platform.</p><p>"Every company that increases in scale has to make difficult decisions about the best way to realise growth opportunities - this has not been an easy decision to make and will mark a new chapter for Blippar."</p><p>The closure comes only nine months after <a href="https://blippar.com/en/resources/blog/2017/07/02/strengthen-west-coast-hub/">Blippar claimed it was "strengthening" its presence</a> on the US West Coast <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/blippar-slashes-costs-as-it-hunts-for-backers-zn5g3hvmn">by shuttering its San Francisco office</a> and moving its engineers over to Mountain View. The closure of both offices means that Blippar no longer has a presence in Silicon Valley, a competitive hub for US developer talent.</p><p>Blippar also shuttered its Turkey and Japan offices in 2016 and 2017. The company still has a commercial operation in New York and is headquartered in London.</p><p>Several key senior executives have left the startup in the past five months. US commercial chief Ariff Quli departed in January, global head of experience strategy Omaid Hiwaizi left in March, and former Nestlé executive Doreswamy Nandkishore stepped down as a non-executive board member in April. None responded to a request for comment.</p><p>Blippar is one of the best-funded startups in the UK with around £79 million ($109 million) in venture funding. The company is best known for the Blippar app, which opens into the camera and recognises and identifies objects around the user.</p><h2>More than a blip for Blippar</h2><p>The recent changes follow two years of upheaval for the company which was once valued at £1 billion.</p><p>Last April, around half a dozen former Blippar employees told Business Insider <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-valued-1-billion-burn-rate-cash-2017-4">that the firm was struggling financially and that it had yet to nail down a business model</a> despite its huge funding pile. The company denied the former employees' allegations at the time, and said it was not in financial trouble.</p><p>In the 16 months to March 2016, Blippar made £8.5 million in revenue, on a loss of £26 million. It had 221 staff, according to the earnings, the bulk of whom were in sales and engineering. The company was due to publish its 2017 earnings in December, but is four months late in filing. The company has not explained the delay.</p><p>Blippar made money as a kind of augmented reality ad agency, with consumers able to scan physical items, such as a Coca-Cola can, to see augmented reality content or ads on their phones. But that relied on consumers downloading the Blippar app and takeup was low, according to former employees.</p><p>The company has previously claimed it has around 65 million users but, sources said, the app had closer to 500,000 active users in 2016. </p><p>There was additional controversy when The Financial Times <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/d9b68cba-0a35-11e7-97d1-5e720a26771b">discovered that Blippar's CEO, Ambarish Mitra, had inflated his CV with misleading statements</a> about his education and business history.</p><p>And in December, Business Insider discovered that FaceJam, an app developed by Blippar to superimpose people's faces onto pictures of celebrities, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-facejam-superimposes-killers-terrorists-ted-bundy-hitler-bin-laden-2017-12">was populated with images of dictators, murderers, and terrorists</a>.</p><p>Now Blippar is increasingly trying to push into the buzzy world of artificial intelligence - a trendy but capital-intensive industry. But the company faces considerable competition both in augmented reality and artificial intelligence, with the major US tech players investing in the area. Apple launched ARKit in 2017, which lets developers build their own augmented reality apps. Augmented reality startup Blippar is abandoning Silicon Valley after losing 2 key execs and a board member

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Snap held talks to buy Blippar just months before the augmented-reality startup shut down its Californian office in an urgent bid to cut costs.</strong></li><li><strong>Blippar's CEO Ambarish Mitra boasted of an acquisition offer in internal meetings, two sources told Business Insider, but said he ultimately turned the deal down.</strong></li><li><strong>A third source rejected this characterisation and said Snap declined to acquire Blippar even after being offered a lower sale price.</strong></li><li><strong>Blippar is often hyped as a unicorn but sources said it has been seeking a buyer or new funding since late 2017.</strong></li><li><strong>US staff have lost their jobs and been paid late as Blippar has reined in its spending.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Snap held talks to buy Blippar just months before the buzzy British augmented-reality startup <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-shuts-mountain-view-office-after-losing-key-execs-2018-5">shut down its California office</a> to cut costs, sources have told Business Insider.</br></p><p>According to three people familiar with the matter, the two companies discussed a deal earlier this year, but the conversations ultimately broke down and Blippar quit Silicon Valley.</p><p>Two sources said Blippar CEO Ambarish "Rish" Mitra boasted to employees in Mountain View, California, about an acquisition offer from Snap.</p><p>At a briefing in February this year, according to these sources, Mitra said staff who stuck around through the deal would be rewarded, as the seven-year-old company inched closer to an exit after years of losses and low revenue.</p><p>According to the sources, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel visited Blippar's computer vision team in California around the same time as the February briefing. An exit seemed imminent and internal gossip pegged a Snap deal at $200 million (£151 million).</p><p>But the takeover never materialised and several months later Mitra told employees at another internal meeting that he had rejected the offer from Snap, sources said. He was worried, they said, that the Mountain View team would have to move to Snap's Los Angeles headquarters. Some staffers didn't know how much to believe, the sources said.</p><p>A third person with knowledge of the talks said it was, in fact, Blippar which first approached Snap and dropped its asking price several times. Snap ultimately backed away. They believe a deal is now completely off the table.</p><p>Snap has bought European startups before. Business Insider revealed that the company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/snap-british-gaming-startup-playcanvas-2018-3">had acquired British game engine startup PlayCanvas in 2017</a>. It also <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/snapchat-paid-213-million-for-zenly-and-135-million-for-placed-2017-8">bought French map startup Zenly</a> and the<a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-21/snap-hires-swiss-team-behind-software-protection-startup"> Swiss team behind software protection firm Strong.Codes</a>.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Blippar <a href="https://blippar.com/en/resources/blog/2018/05/08/blippar-consolidates-technology-operations-focus-expansion-its-ar-platform-london-hq-while-growing-us-commercial-operations-nyc/">publicly announced it was shutting down its Mountain View office on May 8</a>. Staff were told May 18 would be their last day - giving them two weeks to find a job. Blippar never confirmed redundancies, but sources said most of the approximately 35 people in the Mountain View office are now out of a job.</p><p>Business Insider has seen an email from a recruiter sharing CVs for several ex-Blippar engineers looking for work in early May, after the company announced the Mountain View office closure.</p><h2>Blippar source: "People were angry"</h2><p>To make matters worse, Blippar was also late in paying its Mountain View employees their final pay cheque, sources said. An email seen by Business Insider showed a senior manager apologising for sending out the final cheques on June 4, when staffers' last day was May 18.</p><p>According to the sources, Mitra revealed that he and CTO Omar Tayeb had been funding the Mountain View operation from their own pockets.</p><p>Snap wasn't the only potential suitor they boasted about either. German software firm SAP was also interested in buying Blippar's computer vision team, the sources reported Mitra as saying. This was said to be different from a deal with Snap, which would be for the entire company, but again it did not materialise.</p><p>"People were angry," one source said of the fact that some staff were persuaded to stay on in the hope of the company being sold. "The penalty of [Blippar employees'] naive, greedy expectation is struggling to find a job under time pressure, and with less negotiating power, while actually being out of a job."</p><p>The news comes after <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-lost-34-million-in-2017-and-needs-more-cash-2018-6">Blippar reported losses of more than £34 million ($45 million) for the year to April 2017</a>. In a statement to Business Insider last week, Blippar said it wanted to move towards profitability.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">A spokesman said: "Over the past 12 months, we have taken steps to ensure Blippar is in the best possible position to continue scaling and move towards profitability. This has involved the consolidation of our technology operations and a renewed focus on building a cutting-edge AR publishing and creation platform.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Blippar will be looking to raise further investment in 2018 and has the full support of its shareholders."</p><p>A spokeswoman for one prominent Blippar investor, British property tycoon Nick Candy, said Mitra has the backing of the board. She said: "Nick Candy and Candy Ventures are fully supportive of Rish Mitra as CEO of Blippar."</p><p>Snap and SAP declined to comment. Blippar declined to comment on the Snap deal and issues related to the closure of the&#xa0;Mountain View office.</p><h2>Blippar's CEO has a jet-set lifestyle</h2><p>Blippar is a British augmented reality startup, founded in 2011, which showed promise by selling AR advertising on its app to agencies and brands.</p><p>Its chief executive is an ebullient showman who talks about "changing the world" with Blippar, and claims to be <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-ceo-ambarish-mitra-says-company-will-stay-independent-but-may-ipo-2015-8">building a company that's bigger than the internet</a>. Mitra, an Indian-born British entrepreneur, talks about using augmented reality to make the internet accessible to illiterate people in developing countries.</p><p>Investors and employees who spoke to Business Insider almost universally describe Mitra as a charmer. He has won the buy-in of investors including Nick Candy, Lansdowne Partners, and Qualcomm Ventures, who have poured in more than $100 million in funding since the company's inception.</p><p>Mitra travels the world giving talks at conferences and posting selfies on himself onstage, at glamorous locations, and with numerous celebrities. He's given TED talks alongside Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and was awarded entrepreneur of the year by Ernst &amp; Young in 2016. He is a regular at Davos and the Cannes Lions advertising festival in France, where he is this week.</p><p>Blippar has, over the years, acquired the reputation of being a unicorn worth $1 billion. It's an assertion repeated by the UK government and the press, almost without question.</p><p>The company's main product is its app, which a user can hold up to recognise everyday surrounding objects. According to the company, its object recognition software can identify specific makes and models of cars in the US, famous landmarks, celebrities, and many other objects. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/blippar-valued-1-billion-burn-rate-cash-2017-4">The question has always been</a>: Can it make any money?</p><h2>Blippar's most recent earnings don't show huge growth</h2><p>Blippar's earnings for 2016/17 suggest the company isn't a rocket ship of growth. It posted a pre-tax loss of £34.5 million ($46 million)&#xa0;and revenue of £5.7 million ($7.5 million).
