<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> said a <keyword id="3136938" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="disinformation">disinformation</keyword> campaign linked to <keyword id="41896" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Iran">Iran</keyword> tried to send 25,000 emails to Gmail accounts.</li><li>Only 10% of the emails sent to Gmail accounts made it past Google's spam filter, the company said.</li><li>This came after the head of US national intelligence announced Wednesday that an Iranian campaign was behind a spate of threatening emails sent to registered Democratic voters.</li><li>The emails purported to be from far-right group the <keyword id="7348949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Proud-Boys">Proud Boys</keyword>, and threatened recipients with violence if they didn't vote for US President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.</li></ul><p>Google appears to have corroborated a statement by US intelligence that an Iranian campaign sent registered Democratic voters <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-ratcliffe-russia-iran-taking-specific-actions-meddle-in-election-2020-10?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">a spate of intimidating emails</a> claiming to be from the far-right group the Proud Boys.</p><p>Google first <a href="https://twitter.com/donie/status/1319140203077001216">told the CNN reporter Donie O'Sullivan</a> that it had detected 25,000 emails sent to Gmail users as part of a suspected Iranian disinformation campaign, and it later confirmed this in a statement to Business Insider.</p><p>At a press conference Wednesday, Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe said both Russia and Iran had sought to disrupt voting and Iran specifically had been sending "spoofed emails." Registered Democratic voters in Florida and Alaska <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-voters-alaska-florida-foreign-email-vote-trump-proud-boys-2020-10?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">started receiving emails Tuesday</a> purporting to be from far-right group the Proud Boys threatening violence unless they voted for President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.</p><p>"We and others have seen evidence that an operation linked to Iran sent inauthentic emails to people in the US over the past 24 hours," Google said.</p><p>"For Gmail users, our automated spam filters stopped 90% of the approximately 25,000 emails sent," it said in its statement — meaning roughly 2,500 emails breached Gmail's defenses.</p><p>"We referred the matter to the <keyword id="6355946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fbi">FBI</keyword> and will continue to work with law enforcement and others in the industry to identify and remove any related content," Google added.</p><p>Google's statement tallies closely with parts of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-ratcliffe-russia-iran-taking-specific-actions-meddle-in-election-2020-10?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">statement from Ratcliffe</a>, who described emails that he said were "designed to intimidate voters, incite social unrest, and damage President Trump."</p><p>He also said Iranian actors had attempted to distribute "a video that implies that individuals could cast fraudulent ballots even from overseas."</p><p>Google said it had removed videos from Google Drive and YouTube, but it did not clarify what these videos contained.</p><h2>'We will come after you'</h2><p>An email sent to a Florida voter and shared with <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2020/10/20/politics/threatening-emails-sent-to-voters-florida-alaska/index.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fcnn_latest+%28RSS%3A+CNN+-+Most+Recent%29ecent%29">CNN</a> said: "You are currently registered as a Democrat and we know this because we have gained access into the entire voting infrastructure. You will vote for Trump on Election Day or we will come after you."</p><p>The Proud Boys' chairman, Enrique Tarrio, denied the emails were from the group, and metadata reviewed by CNN and The New York Times suggested they were sent from non-US servers. Much US voter-registration info is public.</p><p>US officials gave statements seeking to reassure US citizens their vote would be safe.</p><p>"These emails are meant to intimidate and undermine American voters' confidence in our elections," a representative from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency told Business Insider. "Don't fall for sensational and unverified claims."</p>

Google said an Iran-linked disinformation campaign targeted 25,000 Gmail users, after US intelligence said Iran was trying to 'influence public opinion' ahead of Election Day

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> users continue to share the false claim that former Vice President Joe <keyword id="60973" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Biden">Biden</keyword> misspoke at a rally, naming the wrong state that he was in.</li><li>A doctored video that was viewed more than one million times on Twitter before it was removed made Biden appear to say "hello, Minnesota," at a rally in Florida. Biden was, in fact, in Minnesota.</li><li>The disinformation continues to spread, despite <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword> removing the clip and Twitter adding a "manipulated media" label to tweets containing the video. </li></ul><p>An edited video that made presidential candidate Joe Biden appear to greet the wrong state at a campaign rally went viral on Twitter over the weekend and continues to spread among conservatives, one day before the election. </p><p>Twitter users sharing the video <a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-florida-minnesota-campaigns-58124115393828f85cd496514bba4726?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_medium=APFactCheckactCheck">falsely accused the Democratic presidential candidate</a> of forgetting which state he was visiting. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?477539-1/joe-biden-campaigns-st-paul-minnesota">real version of the video</a>, captured by C-Span, showed Biden greeting attendees at a campaign rally in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Friday, with two signs reading "Text MN to 30330." In the doctored version, signs reading "Tampa, Florida," and "Text FL to 30330," were juxtaposed with Biden saying "Hello, Minnesota." </p><p>YouTube has removed the video for violating its guidelines, but the video continued to circulate on Twitter as of Monday morning. Twitter appended a "manipulated media" flag to tweets containing the video, but several versions of the doctored video were still available on the platform. </p><p>One version of the video brought in 1.1 million views over the weekend, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/01/tech/false-biden-video-twitter/index.html">Donie O'Sullivan of CNN reported</a>. After Twitter added the "manipulated media" label on Sunday evening, that user removed the video, according to CNN. </p><p>Despite Twitter's "manipulated media" label, the misinformation continues to spread among right-wing Twitter users.</p><p>A Twitter spokesperson told Insider in a statement that the video violates Twitter's <a href="https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/manipulated-media">synthetic and manipulated media policy,</a> and that the "manipulated media" label links to a Twitter Moment debunking the false clip.</p><p>On Sunday, the actor James Woods, who is a supporter of President Donald Trump, shared a now-deleted tweet that contained the video. Woods wrote, "Because Minnesota and Florida are so hard to tell apart in November," referencing the weather difference between the two states to highlight the severity of mixing up the two, which Biden did not do. </p><p>Another tweet posted Sunday afternoon, that remained available Monday morning, said, "Joe Biden says 'Hello Minnesota' to a crowd at a rally in Tampa Florida, with a Tampa sign right in back of him."  </p><p>It was not immediately clear where the doctored video originated from. Tweets referencing the false verbal gaffe also continued to spread without the accompanying doctored video, demonstrating the reach of disinformation online.  </p><p>Beyond Twitter, the fake video also circulated on Parler, the right-wing social network. On Sunday, a user shared the video, writing, "You can't make this s--- up," despite the fact that someone did, in fact, make it up. That repost of the video had 74,000 views as of Monday morning. </p><p>Building off of <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/07/02/metro/trumps-sleepy-joe-nickname-biden-isnt-working-even-trump-knows-it/">Trump's nickname for Biden, "Sleepy Joe,"</a> the Trump campaign has also spread several pieces of misinformation <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/29/politics/trump-biden-misleading-video-george-fact-check/index.html">related to Biden's mental fitness for office</a>.</p><p>Just last week, the Trump campaign shared a video of Biden that falsely made the candidate appear to refer to Trump as "George." A doctored Joe Biden video that makes it look like he greeted the wrong state is still spreading

<p>Melissa McCarthy took her famous White House press secretary impression to the streets of New York on Friday morning, cruising through Midtown Manhattan on a motorized podium.</p><p>Hopefully it's a preview of what's to come on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, where <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/melissa-mccarthy-snl-sean-spicer-easter-bunny-hitler-2017-4">McCarthy has repeatedly played</a> President Donald Trump's main spokesman, Sean Spicer. She is hosting this weekend's episode.</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/CillizzaCNN/status/863006660415107073">Twitter users</a> posted various videos of McCarthy motoring past CNN's offices on 58th Street, unperturbed by traffic:</p><p>Spicer garnered some criticism this week after The Washington Post reported he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sean-spicer-literally-hid-in-bushes-to-avoid-media-questions-on-comeys-firing-2017-5">huddled with his staff "in the bushes"</a> on Wednesday to avoid talking to reporters after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/james-comey-fired-fbi-trump-2017-5">Trump fired FBI Director James Comey</a>. Melissa McCarthy takes Sean Spicer 'SNL' impression to the streets of New York, cruising through Midtown on her motorized podium

But his inability to effectively synthesize information and communicate coherently is now having dire consequences on the health and economy of the country.</p><h2>Travel ban confusion</h2><p>In an address to the nation Wednesday, Trump did something he rarely does: read off the teleprompter without adding flourishes or ad-libs. </p><p>And he still couldn't get the facts right. </p><p>The big reveal of Trump's address was a ban on "all travel from Europe," with the United Kingdom exempt. But that's not actually true. The ban applies only to the 26 EU member nations in the <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/what-we-do/policies/borders-and-visas/schengen_en">Schengen Zone</a> - which don't conduct checks at their contiguous borders. That means EU countries outside the Schengen Zone, like Ireland, are also exempt, despite Trump not making that clear. </p><p>That's not an insignificant detail. And it's not just a lack of clarity, it's a fully inaccurate statement. </p><p>Those mistakes can lead to chaos. For instance, at New York's JFK airport last night, travelers waiting to board a plane to Dublin weren't sure they'd be able to come back. CNN reporter Donie O'Sullivan <a href="https://twitter.com/donie/status/1237921739977502722">tweeted a video</a> of an airline employee trying his level-best to reassure the spooked passengers that: "If the leader of the free world is telling you … your travel is being affected I would think that we have to give you your money back."</p><p>Those Dublin-bound travelers were surely relieved when the White House later corrected Trump's misstatement, but the implicit message is clear: the leader of the free world is causing chaos through his miscommunications. </p><h2>An inexcusable bevy of misstatements</h2><p>The Schengen mishap didn't represent the only crucial bit of information Trump flubbed in what will certainly go down as a historic address to the nation. </p><p>He said Americans "who have undergone appropriate screenings" would be exempt from the travel ban. That statement left out the pertinent caveat that the screenings would happen in the US, not abroad. And permanent resident non-citizens and their immediate family members would also be exempt. </p><p>He also said the ban would apply to goods and cargo, which would represent a massive economic disruption since the European Union is the US' largest trading partner. But this sudden proclamation was immediately walked back. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/white-house-scrambles-to-clarify-details-on-coronavirus-response-2020-3">Insider's Grace Panetta noted</a>, Trump himself later tweeted, "trade will in no way be affected by the 30-day restriction on travel from Europe. The restriction stops people, not goods."</p><p>Trump also claimed to have "met with the leaders of health insurance industry [sic]" and said they had agreed "to waive all copayments for coronavirus treatments." <a href="https://twitter.com/owermohle/status/1237922717699014658?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1237922717699014658&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Fwhite-house-scrambles-to-clarify-details-on-coronavirus-response-2020-3">Also not true</a>. They agreed to waive copayments for testing, not for treatments. </p><p>Trump in his address also claimed he was "in frequent contact with our allies," which was swiftly refuted by stunned European Union leaders, who denounced the ban which they said had <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/europe-blindsided-by-trumps-travel-restrictions-with-many-seeing-political-motive/2020/03/12/42a279d0-6412-11ea-8a8e-5c5336b32760_story.html">completely blindsided them</a>. </p><p>In classic Trump fashion, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/12/mike-pence-trump-europe-travel-ban-details-126904">on Thursday he dismissed</a> US allies' consternation not with diplomatic rejoinders, but with trade war rhetoric - one of the only forms of communication he appears to understand: "I mean, when they raise taxes on us, they don't consult us, and I think that's probably one in the same." </p><p>He added, "It takes a long time to make the individual calls."</p><p>These are absurd excuses, especially coming from a world leader who reportedly makes time <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-sean-hannity-talk-before-bed-2018-5">to chat with </a>various right-wing media personalities before he tucks himself in at night. </p><h2>A leader needs to effectively communicate in a global crisis</h2><p>A president doesn't need to be an accomplished orator to effectively lead during a crisis. But they need to demonstrate that they understand the gravity of the situation.</p><p>When Trump stunned the nation - and the world - with his ban, he did it with incorrect information. </p><p>He caused chaos at airports and terrified Americans who didn't have the luxury of waiting for the media to fact-check "the leader of the free world" before they had to take action. </p><p>When he claimed to have consulted with European allies, he was flat-out lying, and then he made a petty excuse to try and cover his tracks. </p><p>According to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/12/us/politics/trumps-coronavirus-unity.html">The New York Times</a>, the speech was cobbled together at the last minute at the urging of the president's daughter Ivanka, her husband Jared Kushner, and recently returned White House adviser Hope Hicks. Kushner reportedly oversaw speechwriter Stephen Miller's drafts, but "only two hours before the camera was to go on, it was still not entirely clear what Mr. Trump was going to say," the Times reports.  </p><p>This all reads like the same old Trump: inarticulate, arrogant, reckless. And that's why for everyone but the hardest-core of partisans, the US' response to the coronavirus pandemic feels like chaos, not competence. </p><p class="tagline">This is an opinion column. Trump's inability to clearly communicate is making the government's coronavirus pandemic response seem like chaos

"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Mike Segar </span></p><p class="caption">Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>In September 2016, Russians released an online game mocking political scandals associated with then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.</strong></li><li><strong>The game's creators tried to make it go viral, but they weren't very successful.</strong></li><li><strong>The game featured three levels, which were inspired by controversies surrounding Clinton's private email use as secretary of state, her political funding from foreign governments, and her regard for the US constitution.</strong></li></ul><hr><p>A month before the 2016 US election, a computer game featuring Hillary Clinton deleting emails, taking money from Middle Eastern countries, and throwing the US Constitution surfaced on several internet platforms, according to a <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/08/technology/hilltendo-russians-anti-clinton-video-game/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN investigation</a>.</p><p>Several Russians with murky ties to the Internet Research Agency (IRA), the Kremlin-backed "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russian-troll-farm-spent-millions-on-election-interference-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">troll factory</a>" that special counsel Robert Mueller indicted last month, were reportedly behind the creation of the game called "Hilltendo."</p><p>The game is the most recent example of how <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russians-organized-pro-anti-trump-rallies-to-sow-discord-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russians tried to sway public opinion</a> in the US during the 2016 election.</p><p>CNN said it scoured internet records and analyzed code to determine the origins of the game and the identities of those responsible for spreading it.</p><p>Although the creators tried to make it go viral online by sharing the game through a handful of user accounts on Twitter, Imgur, and Reddit, they ultimately weren't very successful. CNN said the creators claimed the game, which is no longer available online, was played fewer than 19,000 times.</p><p>A line-by-line analysis of the game's code by CNN and several cybersecurity experts revealed that it was embedded with Facebook and Google tracking software, suggesting that the game's creators could have been trying to track who was playing their game in an attempt to direct targeted advertisements their way.</p><p>On September 9, 2016, the websites Hilltendo.com and PlayWithHillary.com were both registered online, per the CNN report. Although the registration information for the former was hidden by a proxy, CNN was able to determine that someone named Aleksandr Skripnikov registered the latter from St. Petersburg, Russia.</p><p>The Internet Research Agency also operated out of St. Petersburg during that time.</p><p>Hilltendo featured three levels, according to CNN, which exhibited specific themes related to real controversies that plagued Clinton's campaign:</p><ul><li>Level 1: A Clinton character glides across the screen as she tries to eliminate as many emails as possible without getting caught by the FBI</li><li>Level 2: The Clinton character tries to collect as much money as possible as it falls down from flags of Arab countries, including Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Oman</li><li>Level 3: An Obama character drops a copy of the US Constitution from the top of the White House as the Clinton character waits below to try to hit it as far as possible</li></ul><p>Last month, Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russian election meddling, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russians-mueller-charged-with-interfering-2016-election-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">charged</a> 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities, including the Internet Research Agency, with "violating US criminal laws in order to interfere with US elections and political processes."</p><p>Mueller's team is also looking into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia in their interference efforts, as well as whether Trump has obstructed justice during the course of the probe.</p><div><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>NEW: Russians released anti-Clinton video game weeks before the 2016 presidential election.
